Process for inert gas arc welding of butt seams on light metal parts, especially parts made of aluminum and aluminum alloys When producing weld seams on light metal parts using an electric arc or welding torch, there is always the risk of the weld seam melting through. Instead of the desired weld connection, a hole is created. This risk is particularly great when long seams of, for example, several meters are to be made, because then it is difficult to get the edges to be connected to abut everywhere. Where the edges do not touch, the risk of perforation is particularly great.
To prevent dripping through, it has already been proposed to place a sheet metal strip under the seam and to attach it to at least one of the parts to be connected by spot welding; this metal strip was welded to the seam. It has also been proposed to insert an additional rod into the seam, which completed the seam at the bottom and is held in place by a special pad; In this case too, the additional rod that prevented dripping through was also welded.
Welding the base with the weld seam is not desirable in many cases. It has therefore already been proposed to design the base as a channel-shaped approach that extends from the underside of one part at a distance from the outer edge and consists of one piece with this. This approach forms a type of chill mold under the weld seam, which may catch the metal from melting through and in this way prevent the emergence of a hole.
For the execution of this method, for the part provided with the channel-like projection, extruded products in particular come into question, in which the attachment can also be pressed in the extrusion press. However, it has been shown that the proposed, from Fig. 1 Stosskantenaus education is unfavorable press technology. The groove formed from the approach must not be deep. As a result, however, a narrowed web is necessary in the press die, which easily breaks out. Also, no symmetrical constructions can be welded from the parts pressed with a die; on the second part, the approach would have to be milled away, or two different parts would have to be welded together, which again requires two press dies.
The present invention relates to a process for gas-shielded arc welding of butt welds on light metal parts, especially parts made of aluminum and aluminum alloys, using a pad connected to the parts to be welded, which serves as a mold for melting metal of the weld "but itself not welded to this. According to the invention, the base is formed from two approaches starting from one of the parts to be connected at a distance from the outer edge,
which collide below the joint of the parts to be connected and form a channel. With this design of the abutting edges, the required press die can be a fold and not have a narrowed web. It is also possible to weld the profiles produced with just one press die to form symmetrical constructions.
The approaches should start at a distance from the outer edge of the edges to be welded, since their roots do not weld with the weld seam if possible. - The thickness of the approaches must of course be dimensioned in such a way that the heat dissipation is sufficiently large to prevent the channel from melting through dripping material. Through a partial. Welding the channel would create an undesirable notch.
In the case of structures that are subject to high dynamic loads, it is absolutely essential that no notches are created as a result of partial welding of the approaches to the weld seam. This can be avoided properly if the approaches form a deep groove into which a metal rod with a flat, wide groove on the side facing the weld seam is inserted.
FIGS. 2 and 3 illustrate the method in two exemplary embodiments, the parts being shown in cross section perpendicular to the seam.
The parts 1 are extruded profiles. They are provided with an approach 2 which starts at a distance from the edge 3. When the edges to be welded meet, the lugs 2 of the parts 1 form a channel-shaped mold below the weld seam. This mold catches any metal dripping through the weld seam, so that no holes are created in the seam. However, it is not necessary in every case to work in such a way that the seam is, so to speak, cast in a mold. The main task of the channel-shaped approach is to protect against flowing away of melting metal and thus against perforation of the weld seam.
You can therefore work with high amperages in machine welding without running the risk of the seam being perforated in places where the edges to be welded do not touch.
The method is particularly valuable in the manufacture of longitudinal seams on elongated hollow bodies, because in such cases, separate channel-shaped documents can only be used with great difficulty.
Since no flux is used in electric arc welding under shielding gas, it is usually not necessary to remove the channel-shaped attachment after the welding has been completed, because no flux residues can remain trapped.
In the formation of the abutting edges according to FIG. 2, the lugs 2 cannot be of any length and therefore the channel cannot be of any width, for press-technical reasons, since otherwise too long a narrow web is necessary in the press die. If the channel is too narrow, however, there is the risk that the projections 2 will weld at their roots to the welding bead and thereby form an undesirable notch.
A welding of the approaches 2 is according to Figure 3 in all cases and perfectly avoided by the channel formed by the approaches is selected wide and deep and then a metal rod 4 is placed in the channel as the actual underlay, the one facing the weld seam Side has a wide, flat groove 5, which serves as an insert of the mold for dripping metal.
