The present invention relates to a milling cutter with removable inserts, for example made of high speed steel or other metal or hard alloy or even of ceramic.
In wafer cutters. known removable, the means of fixing the plates. on the cutter body are, in general, complicated and expensive, more or less difficult to adjust and, moreover, do not easily allow the replacement of the inserts or their temporary removal for change of orientation and possibly resharpening when the milling cutter is in the normal working position on the machine tool. It is generally necessary to first remove the complete cutter with its inserts.
The object of the invention is to remedy all these drawbacks by allowing, on the one hand, easy installation and removal of the inserts on the body of the cutter, without complicated adjustments during assembly, and on the other hand, the 'easy execution of the above operations without first removing the cutter from the machine tool on the shaft of which it is fixed.
This cutter is characterized in that the removable plates are held by wedges formed by oblique surface portions of bolts whose nuts are housed in a peripheral groove of the cutter body, this groove making it possible to drive these nuts in rotation. but preventing them from moving axially.
It follows that these nuts are easily accessible by the always free periphery of the milling cutter, while its fixing face is itself more or less inaccessible and that it is thus easy, by turning these nuts in one direction or in the other, to cause a longitudinal displacement of the bolts to tighten the pads or to release them.
In a particular embodiment of the cutter, the plates bear under the action of the bolts forming wedges against a frustoconical crown attached axially on one of the large faces of the cutter body, with or without interposition, at will, between this body and this crown, one or more washers forming shims.
This arrangement allows the use of sets of inserts of different dimensions and hence of successive resharpening of a set of given inserts.
The appended drawing shows, by way of example, an embodiment of the cutter which is the subject of the invention. FIG. 1 is a schematic front view, from the insert side, that is to say from the working face side, of said embodiment of the cutter.
Fig. 2 is an axial section, roughly diametrical, along line 2-2 of FIG. 1.
Fig. 3 is a partial view of the rear face thereof, cut away along line 3-3 of FIG. 2.
Fig. 4 is a partial view, on a larger scale, corresponding to the upper part of FIG. 2, the cutter body being cut along line 4-4 of fig. 5.
Fig. - 5 is a corresponding plan view, the cutter body being cut along line 5-5 of FIG. 4. According to the embodiment shown, the cutter comprises a cutter body A made of steel or other resistant material, of revolution about the X-X axis. It is drilled with an axial hole 1 and comprises, in its rear face 2, a counter-bore 3, extended by two diametrically opposed clearances 4 allowing it to be fixed on a drive spindle in rotation around the axis XX , in the direction of arrow fi (fig. 1, 3, 5).
The working face 6 perfectly upright and perpendicular to the axis XX is counterbored in the form of a housing with a flat bottom 7 rectified and on a cylindrical face 8, connected by a shoulder 9 with a frustoconical surface 10 flared towards the face 6 on which it opens.
In addition, the body A comprises, evenly distributed over its entire periphery, notches. or notches such that each of them comprises: on the one hand, a lateral face 11 inclined at a certain angle a (FIG. 5) with respect to a radial axial plane PP passing through the edge 12 of intersection of this face 11 with the front face 6, and on the other hand, an oblique bottom 13, perpendicular to the side face 11, the bottoms 13 of all the notches converging on the axis XX towards the rear face 2 (see fig. 2 and 4).
Furthermore, the body A is on the one hand pierced with cylindrical holes 14 of axis Y-Y parallel to the axis X-X; each of these holes 14 intersects the corresponding notch and opens into a notch 14d formed in the end face 6 of the body A, opposite the bearing face 11, and on the other hand, a groove peripheral 15 of rectangular section and intersecting the holes 14. In the bore 8 is engaged, either directly or with the interposition of one or more shims B (fig. 2, 4), a bearing ring C which is attached in this bore by screws 16.
This ring C, the face 17 of which is flush with or is set back relative to the face 6 of the body A, following the number which may be zero of shims B, comprises a frustoconical outer surface 18 (fig. 2, 4) which , in combination with the notches of the body A, form flat housings, and faces 13 and 18 converging towards the rear face 2 of said body.
In each of these housings are engaged a plate D of high speed steel, ceramic or other material, intended to constitute one of the active machining elements by its edge located at 19, and a support block E of high speed steel or other resistant material, housed between plate D and face 11.
Inserts D and wedges E are polygo nal and, preferably, pentagonal, the wedges being a little smaller than the inserts to be set back from their working edges 19 and from the adjacent facet 20 (fig. 5) .
Each plate D and its wedge E are supported by two lateral faces 21, 22 (fig. 4) against the face 13 of the notch in the body A and against the frustoconical outer face 18 of the crown C, in a position such that on the one hand, the cutting edge 19 of each plate is slightly inclined at an angle b (fig. 4) of the order of 20 with respect to the face 6 of the body A, so that c 'is the peripheral end of this edge which is the most projecting relative to this face, and on the other hand,
the adjacent facet 20 provides a relief angle A equal to the obliquity a of the face 11 of the notch with respect to the radial axial plane P-P; the angle a is, for example, of the order of 6o; it naturally varies according to the nature of the work to be facer.
Each plate D and its wedge E are held in place by clamping against the face 11 using a portion forming a wedge of the cylindrical rod of a bolt F, this wedge being formed by a flat surface 23 (fig. 5), oblique with respect to the axis YY which it will approach the smooth front end of the bolt towards the threaded portion 24 of the bolt this surface 23 opens into a notch 25 which provides a housing for a portion of the plate D .
Each bolt F is housed in one of the holes 14 of the body A and it receives, between two support washers 26, 27, a nut 28 housed in the peripheral groove 15 of the body A.
We immediately see that by rotating the nut G in the direction of the arrow f2 (fig. 3) which ensures its screwing on the bolt F, this nut E is supported by the washer 27 against the adjacent face of the groove 15 and, as this nut is thus immobilized longitudinally, it is the bolt F which must move in the direction of the arrow f3 (fig. 5), which ensures an increase in the wedge effect.
On the other hand, if the nut G is rotated in the unscrewing direction, this nut comes to bear by the other washer 26 against the other face of the groove 15 (adjacent to the face 2) and the bolt F is moved. axially in the opposite direction to the arrow f 3 (fig. 5), that is to say in the direction of loosening of the corresponding plate D, which after a reduced displacement of the bolt is released and can be extracted from its housing for either presenting another edge in the active position (a pentagonal plate allows ten successive positions) or for resharpening,
or pure and simple replacement.
As can be seen, the removal of the inserts and their installation are therefore ensured by the simple screwing and unscrewing of the nuts which are easily accessible from the lateral surface of the cutter body, even if its rear 2 and front 6 faces do not. are not. It will be noted that after resharpening, the inserts D having decreased in size, they will be kept in the correct position by removing one or more of the shims B.
If resharpening is not considered, the shims B can be removed, the crown C then having dimensions established accordingly.
