3, 3'-Dimethyl-4, 4'-diisocyanat-diphenylmethan,
Diphenylen-4, 4'-diisocyanat,
4, 4'-Diisocyanat-diphenyläther, Naphthylen-1, 5-diisocyanat,
Hexamethylendiisocyanat,
Diisocyanatdicyclohexylmethan, p-Xylylen-diisocyanat,
Isocyanatbenzylisocyanat,
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6-Hexahy (1ro-diphenylenz
4, 4'-diisocyanat,
4, 4'-Diisocyanat-1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6-hexahydro diphenylmethan, 1, 2, 3, 4-Tetrahydro-naphthylen-1,
5-diisocyanat,
Toluol-2, 4, 6 triisocyanat, 3-Methyl-4, 6, 4'-triisocyanatdiphenylmethsan,
2, 4, 4'-Triisocyanat-diphenyl,

Process for polymerizing organic isocyanates
It has already been proposed to use certain catalysts in the polymerization of organic diisocyanates. An even larger number of catalysts have already been proposed for the polymerization of organic monoisocyanates.
Two types of polymers have been made from monoisocyanates, namely the dimers (substituted uretdiones) of the general formula:
EMI1.1
and the trimers (isocyanuric acid derivatives) of the general formula
EMI1.2
It has now been found that certain basic catalysts are particularly suitable for the rapid polymerization of organic polyisocyanates, and that these catalysts promote the formation of the trimeric form of the polymeric compound, i.e. H. favor the isocyanurate type of the polymer.
The inventive method for the polymerization of organic isocyanates is now characterized in that an organic polyisocyanate with at least one alkali or. Alkaline earth metal oxide, hydroxide, carbonate, alcoholate, phenolate or metal salt of a weak aliphatic or alicyclic carboxylic acid as a basic catalyst.
Examples of suitable catalysts are sodium methoxide, potassium hydroxide, sodium acetate, potassium acetate, nabrium carbonate, potassium carbonate, sodium phenolate, sodium octylphenolate, sodium acetic acid ester, sodium stearate, sodium 2-ethylhexoate, lead-2-ethyl-1-texoate, zinc naphilaurate, Lead naphthenab, cobalt naphthenate, manganese linoleate. Particularly effective catalysts are sodium methoxide, sodium acetate, lead-2-ethylhexoate and lead naphthenate.
The polymerization process can be carried out in the absence or presence of a solvent for the polyisocyanate. Suitable solvent solvents are esters, e.g. B. ethyl acetate and butyl acetate, ketones, such as. B. acetone and methyl ethyl ketone, chloroform, benzene, toluene, xylene, monochlorobenzene, o-dichlorobenzene, phenolic substances, ¯ther, such as. B. diethyl and dibutyl ether, and petroleum ether and mixtures thereof. Usually one uses a solvent in which the polymerized polyisocyanate is soluble.
If the desired degree of polymerization has been reached, further polymerization can be prevented, for example, by mechanical removal of insoluble catalysts by filtration, this method being particularly convenient when the product is in solution. On the other hand, especially in the case of soluble catalysts, the catalyst can be removed by treating the product with the calculated amount or a slight excess thereof of a strong acid, e.g. B. what serfreiem hydrogen chloride, sulfuric acid or phosphoric acid, make inactive. If desired, the inactive, insoluble material thus obtained can be removed by filtration.
A solvent can also be used if both the polyisocyanate and the catalyst are soluble, in which case petroleum ether, diethyl ether and dibutyl ether, for example, can then be used, so that the polymerized polyisocyanate separates from the reaction mixture.
The amount of catalyst required depends on the effectiveness of the catalyst and the nature of the polyisocyanate. Quantities of 0.01-10.0 / o polyisocyanate are generally beneficial. In the case of catalysts of high efficiency, amounts of about 0.11 / o are suitable. The reaction temperature can also fluctuate greatly. In general, the lowest temperature in practice will be used, if possible a temperature that is close to room temperature. Preferably, however, temperatures of less than 200 ° C. will be used. If the temperatures are too high, undesirable side reactions occur. Discoloration of the product then also occurs.
When working according to the process according to the invention, any organic polyisocyanate or a mixture of polyisocyanates can be polymerized. Examples of such isocyanates are p-phenylene diisocyanate, 1-methoxyphenylene-2,4-diisocyanate,
3, 3'-dimethyl-4, 4'-diisocyanate-diphenylmethane,
Diphenylene-4,4'-diisocyanate,
4,4'-diisocyanate diphenyl ether, naphthylene-1,5-diisocyanate,
Hexamethylene diisocyanate,
Diisocyanate dicyclohexyl methane, p-xylylene diisocyanate,
Isocyanate benzyl isocyanate,
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6-hexahy (1ro-diphenylenz
4, 4'-diisocyanate,
4, 4'-diisocyanate-1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6-hexahydro diphenylmethane, 1, 2, 3, 4-tetrahydro-naphthylene-1,
5-diisocyanate,
Toluene-2, 4, 6 triisocyanate, 3-methyl-4, 6, 4'-triisocyanatdiphenylmethane,
2, 4, 4'-triisocyanate-diphenyl,
2, 4, 4'-triisocyanate diphenyl ether.
Polyisocyanates can be mixed with aromatic monoisocyanates, e.g. B. phenyl isocyanate, tolyl isocyanates, chlorophenyl isocyanates or methoxyphenyl isocyanates polymerize. Organic diisocyanates which can be polymerized particularly advantageously according to the present invention are 2,4 and 2,6 toluene diisocyanates and mixtures thereof, diisocyanates of diphenylmethane, m-phenylene diisocyanate, chlorophenylene-2,4-diisocyanate , m-xylylene diisocyanate and p-isocyanate benzyl isocyanate.
The isocyanurate polymer forms of these diisocyanates, which correspond to a further embodiment of this invention, can be prepared particularly easily with the aid of the catalysts used in the process according to the invention, and these polymers can be used in various fields of application instead of monomeric diisocyanates.
The isocyanurate polymer forms of diisocyanates which contain at least one aliphatically bound isocyanate group or one cycloaliphatically bound isocyanate group, which in turn adheres to an aromatic nucleus, are particularly valuable because they cure better than other diisocyanates, and the paint films obtained in this way have the property better to keep the color.
The presence of isocyanurate polymers in the polymeric aromatic isocyanates obtainable by the process according to the invention can be demonstrated by the presence of well-defined absorption bands of 5, 85 and 7, 75 microns in the infrared spectrum, the optical densities of these values with the Degree of polymerization increase. These bands are typical of isocyanurate structures, as can be demonstrated by triphenyl isocyanurate. Dimer forms of isocyanate polymers show absorption bands at 5, 60 and 7.18 microns.
It is known that isocyanates can be used in the form of their reaction products with, for example, phenols, acetoacetic esters, malonic esters and diphenylamine. In a similar way, the isocyanate polymers obtainable by the method according to the invention can also be used in the form of reaction products with such compounds, the bonded isocyanate groups of these reaction products also behaving like free isocyanates at elevated temperatures. These reaction products can advantageously be used instead of compounds with only free isocyanate groups if one wishes to improve the shelf life (pot life) of, for example, resin paints or if one uses solvents which are reactive with isocyanate.
The isocyanate polymers can either be used alone as essentially monomer-free, practically completely converted polymers, or in solution in polyisocyanates from which they are derived, or in a mixture with other polyisocyanates. In a similar way they can be dissolved in organic solvents, such as B. chloroform, Me thylendichlorid, esters, ketones or benzene hydrocarbons can be used, this depends on the particular solubility of the polymer in question.
Any monomer present in the isocyanate polymers obtainable according to the invention can be obtained by distilling the monomer under reduced pressure in the presence or absence of vapor of an inert liquid, e.g. B. mono- or dichlorobenzene, or by precipitating the polymer from the solution by adding a second solvent in which the monomeric compound is soluble and the polymer is essentially insoluble, e.g. B. in dialkyl and petroleum ethers, remove or practically remove.
The isocyanate polymers and their reaction products listed above have various fields of application. For example, they can be used as adhesives, as hardeners for resins, as components of those for isocyanate-modified poly ester or polyether rubber, e.g. B. to achieve special effects both in elastic and in solid cellular materials, use. The toxicity, if any, of volatile diisocyanates, of tolylene diisocyanates, can be effectively reduced by using essentially completely converted isocyanate polymers while products with isocyanate groups still active are excreted. This is particularly valuable when isocyanates are used with poor ventilation.
