Process for the preparation of quinaeridones and derivatives thereof It has been found that compounds of the formula I
EMI0001.0002
where Ri is hydrogen, an aliphatic or aromatic radical and R "is an aryl radical in which at least one o-position to the -NH- group is unsubstituted, can be reacted in the presence of sulfuric acid in such a way that the ring closes the corresponding quin [2,3-b] acridones or
Quin [2,3-b] acridone derivatives according to the reaction scheme
EMI0001.0013
are formed.
The present patent therefore relates to a process for the preparation of quin [2,3-b] acridones and derivatives thereof with fused aromatic rings, characterized in that compounds of the formula I are cyclized in the presence of sulfuric acid or chlorosulfonic acid, and that in the case of the formation of sulfo- or sulfochloride-containing quin [2,3-b] acridones or
Quin [2,3-b] acridone derivatives split off the sulfo- or sulfochloride groups again.
Of the starting materials of formula I, for. B.
2,5-diphenylamino-terephthalic acid, 2,5-diphenylamino-terephthalic acid esters and, above all, 2,5-diphenylamino-terephthalic acids substituted in the phenylamino radical, such as 2,5-di- (methylphenylamino) -terephthalic acids, 2,5-di- (methoxyphenylamino) ) -terephthalic acids, 2,5-di- (halophenylamino) -terephthalic acids and 2,5-di- (2 ', 4'-dimethylphenylamino) -terephthalic acid and also 2,5-dinaphthylamino-terephthalic acids can be used.
The starting materials of the formula I can be prepared by known production methods, for. B. by means of condensation of succinylosuccinic acid esters with primary aromatic amines, e.g. B. aniline, subsequent oxidation in the presence of iodine and, if necessary, saponification can be obtained.
There are already several processes for the cyclization of 2,5-diarylamino-terephthalic acids to the corresponding quin [2,3-b] acridones or quin [2,3-b] - acridone derivatives known, such as heating in the presence of zinc chloride , Phosphorus pentachloride, phosphorus pentoxide, aluminum chloride, etc. All of these processes give poor yields and can usually only be used in special cases. The best method so far has been the heating of 2,5-diarylamino-terephthalic acids in molten boric acid to over 300 ° C (Annalen 518, 245).
This process is technically extremely difficult to carry out, on the one hand because of the high temperature and on the other hand because of the property of the boric acid melt to foam during the reaction and finally solidify into a solid, non-stirrable mass.
In contrast, the new process has the advantage that it works at much lower temperatures, the solution does not foam and can be continuously stirred, and that the yield z. B. the quin [2,3-b] acridone is higher and the products are purer than with the boric acid melt.
The present process represents a simple and inexpensive production process for substituted or unsubstituted quin [2,3-b] acridones and for their derivatives with fused aromatic rings.
The reaction conditions can be varied widely in carrying out the invention. The inventive method can be carried out at he elevated temperature, conveniently at temperatures significantly above 100 C, for. B. between 140 to 160 C.
The concentration of sulfuric acid is also variable. In general, 75 to 1000% sulfuric acid or sulfuric acid containing SO3 is used.
If the quin [2,3-b] acridones or quin [2,3-b] acridone derivatives obtained in the cyclization contain sulfo groups, they can be converted into their sulfonic acid salts, preferably into the sodium salts be divorced in a known manner by salting out.
To split off the sulfo groups, these sulfonic acid salts can be heated with dilute acid at elevated temperature and preferably under pressure. This cleavage is preferably carried out with 50% sulfuric acid, the treatment being e.g. B. is carried out at 2000 C for 10 hours. The insoluble quinacridones or quinacridone derivatives mentioned are obtained.
In a particular embodiment of the inventive method he z. B. 2,5-diphenylamino-terephthalic acid reacted with sulfuric acid. The quin [2,3-b] acridone obtained in this way shows a violet-red hue; by dissolving in concentrated sulfuric acid and subsequent dilution with water, preferably to 85 / o, the known red modification of quin [2,3-b] acridone is obtained.
In the following examples, unless otherwise stated, the parts are parts by weight, the percentages are percentages by weight, and the temperatures are given in degrees Celsius. Example 1 3 parts of 2,5-diphenylamino-terephthalic acid who concentrated in 30 parts. Sulfuric acid heated to 150 for 1 hour. The solution is then cooled and poured into 300 parts of water. Sodium chloride is added to the burgundy red solution until all the dye is salted out. This is filtered off and washed three times with 50 parts of saturated sodium chloride solution each time.
The moist suction filter is heated to 200 for 10 hours in a sealed tube with 50 parts of 5% strength sulfuric acid. After cooling, the precipitated quin [2,3-b] acridone is filtered off.
For cleaning, 2 parts of the pigment are dissolved in 40 parts of conc. Sulfuric acid at 10 to 200. Then 26.6 parts of 50% sulfuric acid are slowly added and the product which has crystallized out is filtered off. This is first washed with 75% sulfuric acid, then with water. A light red, luminous powder is obtained.
Example 2 3 parts of 2,5-diphenylamino-terephthalic acid di-ethyl ester are heated to 160 for 2 hours in 50 parts of 9011% sulfuric acid. A product is obtained which has practically the same properties as those according to Example 1.
Example 3 Instead of conc. Sulfuric acid, the reaction according to Example 1 is carried out with chlorosulfonic acid.
Example 4 For 120 parts of 100% sulfuric acid, 40 parts of 2,5-dianilido-terephthalic acid are added to 500. The solution is heated to 1301 and stirred for 2 hours at this temperature. Then it is cooled to 200 and diluted with 680 parts of water. This solution is heated to 200-205 for 10 hours in a porcelain autoclave.

Then you carry out on ice and water and work as indicated in Example 1 on.
Example 7 50 parts conc. Sulfuric acid and 3 parts of 2,5-dianilido-terephthalic acid ethyl ester are heated to 1600 within one hour and stirred at 1600 for 2 hours. The solution is poured into water and the procedure is continued as indicated in Example 1.
Example 8 25 parts of 2,5-dianilido-terephthalic acid and 250 parts of conc. Sulfuric acid are stirred at 1300 for one hour. Then the solution is poured into 1250 parts of water, 250 parts of sodium chloride are added,
the precipitated product is filtered off and washed neutral with a 20% strength sodium chloride solution. The suction filter is heated to 200 to 2050 for 10 hours in a porcelain autoclave with 500 parts of 5% sulfuric acid and 25 parts of mercury sulfate. The quin [2,3-b] acridone obtained is worked up as indicated in Example 4.
Instead of 2,5-dianilido-terephthalic acid, 2,5-di- (2'-methyl-phenylamino) -terephthalic acid and 2,5-di- (2 ', 4'-dimethyl-phenylamino) -terephthalic acid can also be used be used.
Example 9 25 parts of 2,5-dianilido-terephthalic acid are concentrated in 250 parts in half an hour. Sulfuric acid registered from 2000. The solution is then poured out onto water and the procedure as indicated in Example 1 continues.

Then cool to 200 and dilute with 300 parts of water. This solution is heated to 200 to 2050 for 10 hours in a porcelain autoclave. The quin [2,3-b] acridone which has separated out is then filtered off, boiled with 59% sodium hydroxide solution for one hour, filtered, washed neutral and dried. 36 parts of quin [2,3-b] acridone are obtained.
