les parois du cylindre étant formées par un .revêtement en .acier, par exemple. On peut aussi transplanter une couche en acier ou autre matériau convenable sur une roue de freinage en alliage léger<B>;
La hg. 1 est une coupe axiale d'un ensemble de matrice constituant un moule poux la fabrication d'une pièce pourvue d'une couche de revêtement ;
la îig. 2 est une vue en plan, fragmentaire à grande échelle de la surface métallisée d'un élément de l'ensemble de la fig. 1 avant l'injection du métal fondu dans ledit ensemble ;
la fig. 3 est une vue en perspective, partiellement en coupe, d'une pièce coulée obtenue dans le moule de la fig. 1 ;
d'un bloc fixe 12, d'une pièce séparée formant noyau 14 et d'un man- ehon d'injection;
12 % -14 % de Cr, environ; 1 % de Mn et un minimum de 0,15 % de C, le reste étant du fer. A l'intérieur du pistolet ce fil est entraîné de manière qu'il pénètre dans une flam- me oxyacétylénique qui en provoque la fusion;
Method for manufacturing a casting having a coating layer Uiunventian relates to a method for manufacturing a casting having a coating layer on it. minus part of its surface. This process is
characterized in that Z'on applies the material; intended to form the layer of: coating on a surface of at least one element of a: mold so:
forming thereon a layer having an irregular surface exposed to the mold cavity,
in that molten metal is introduced into said cavity at a pressure such that it fits mechanically into:
the irregularities of the irregular surface layer forming a miter the casting which, by solidification, obtains from the molten metal and said layer a more solid seal than that existing between the layer and the element of the mule, and in what we,
separates the layer of said element so as to transplant it onto the. casting.
The above process can advantageously be used to fabricate internal combustion engine blocks, these blocks being bent of aluminum and having cylinder bores with a hard and resistant surface. to wear,
the walls of the cylinder being formed by a .coating of .steel, for example. A layer of steel or other suitable material can also be transplanted onto a light alloy brake wheel <B>;
</B> said layer resistant to wear by the shoe of the: brake and the light alloy which conducts the heat produced by braking well,
to dispel it. Another possible application is the production of an aluminum kitchen utensil coated with a stainless steel layer. Of course, many other useful applications
can be taken into consideration, which it would be superfluous to list here.
The drawing illustrates, by way of example, an implementation of the method according to the invention.
The hg. 1 is an axial section of a die assembly constituting a mold for the manufacture of a part provided with a coating layer;
the ilig. 2 is a plan view, fragmentary on a large scale of the metallized surface of one element of the assembly of FIG. 1 before injecting the molten metal into said assembly;
fig. 3 is a perspective view, partially in section, of a casting obtained in the mold of FIG. 1;
fig. 4 is an enlarged photograph of the cross section of a typical part obtained by the present process.
Reference will first be made to FIG. 1 which illustrates a mold for manufacturing a die-cast aluminum cylinder sleeve and intended for an internal combustion engine, which assembly is composed of a movable block 10,
a fixed block 12, a separate part forming a core 14 and an injection sleeve;
16. The core 14 is provided with a portion 18 which fits into a cavity 20 provided to receive it in the movable block 10 and thereby locates said core exactly in a position exactly concentric with the cylindrical portion.
ID = "0001.0248"> that printing 22 of the fixed block 12. The mayens provided to retain the body 18 of the core 14 in its cavity 20 have not been shown,
since any of the various mechanisms known and commonly used by those skilled in the art can be used for this purpose. An annular cavity 24 is thus formed between the core 14 and the
cylindrical impingement surface 22 of the fixed block.
To obtain the die-cast cylinder sleeve, the first operation to be carried out is to apply a coating 26 to a cylindrical portion 28 of the core 14.
Unlike the current techniques of die casting, the practice of the invention in its preferred form.
does not require said portion 28 of the core to be conical in shape. Said coating 26 can conveniently be applied to said portion 28 using an ordinary metallization gun using stainless steel wire containing about
12% -14% Cr, approximately; 1% Mn and a minimum of 0.15% C, the remainder being iron. Inside the gun this wire is driven so that it penetrates an oxyacetylene flame which causes it to melt;
the molten bond being ejected from the gun by a jet of compressed air and projected onto said portion 28.
It has been found that it is preferable that the surface of the portion 28 has been made slightly rough (for example that the smooth or even character of this surface is of the order of 20 to 30.rms)
the surface roughness designations indicated by the numbers followed by the letters put s> have the known meaning of the root mean square value, in units of 25 thousandths of a millimeter, of the curvature of irregularities present on the surface of the part),
by light sanding prior to the application of coating 26, such sanding ensuring proper adhesion of the coating material to the core portion. The thickness of the layer 26 should be between about 0.38mm and about 0.63mm.
The outer surface of the layer 26, exposed to the cavity 24, is pitted and hollowed out irregularly, as emerges from FIG. 2 which represents a portion of the exposed surface of such a layer produced by metallization,
in the way, described, and enlarged about 8 times.
The application of the coating material by the conventional method of spraying with the aid of the metallizer udder is particularly advantageous for the production of cylinder sleeves for internal combustion engines. At least some portions of the <RTI
ID = "0002.0119"> Coating layer applied consist of iron oxide which ensures the presence of hard and wear resistant parts in the exposed surface of the barrel.
A molten aluminum alloy of a chosen type, under a pressure of 280 to 700 kg / cm2 is then forced in such a way that it enters the annular cavity 24 (fig. 1) and fills it completely and that 'it also penetrates the bites,
dimpled and hollow on the exposed surface of the layer 26. In. solidifying, the molten metal contracts in and around this layer,
to which it attaches mechanically and with which it forms an extremely solid seal. A few seconds after the injection of the aluminum,
the two mold elements are separated and the whole of the casting 30 with the coating layer 26 and the core 14 are ejected en bloc.
It is best - though not essential - to allow the casting to cool while it is still on the core.
In most cases, the core is made of a material with a coefficient of thermal expansion less than that of the material (eg steel) from which the casting is made.
If the two parts are cooled together, the core prevents the aluminum casting from contracting as completely as it would if it were not supported internally. In fact,
cooling subjects the aluminum to extension forces which exceed its elastic limit and this metal is permanently fixed to a diameter determined by that of the core.
By preheating the core to a known temperature and cooling the parts together to a known temperature, high precision castings are obtained. The variation in diameter is of the order of 0.025 mm in a sheath or sleeve 10 cm in diameter.
The most convenient way to separate the core 14 from the coated casting is to subject the whole to differential expansion. You can heat up quickly (all of the aluminum casting and the coating attached strongly to this part while RTI ID = "0002.0249" WI = "3" HE = "4" LX = "1348" LY = "903"> rie core <RTI
ID = "0002.0250"> remains cold, the overall expansion allows very easy separation of the elements.
A great advantage of this way of operating is that it allows the nucleus to be formed without taper,
so that the cylinder obtained does not require .no subsequent machining operation in order to obtain .a cylinder sleeve having a constant diameter from end to end.
It has been found possible by this process to obtain a cylindrical sleeve or sleeve provided with an inner surface coating obtained by pressure molding and the smoothness of which is of the order of 30 rms. Fig. 3 shows the finished cast aluminum part 30,
this part being provided on its inner surface with the iron alloy layer,
a portion of said part being assumed to be lifted to show details of the construction. Fig. 4 is a cross section of such a part enlarged by about 14 times.
The light gray portion is the body of the part, the coating being the darker stripe, the interlocking of the material of the coating layer and the material of the socket body being clearly shown.
The cylindrical bush 30 is of course only one example of the articles which can be manufactured by the present method and it is otherwise clear that in the bush,
a diaper is transplanted from one portion. from the core to the cast sleeve. We realize that, in the cylindrical sleeve, the main role of the transplanted layer is to ensure the resistance to wear and the retention of the oil,
but that layers imparting other desired properties may, by the same process be applied either to similar castings,
or on castings having various other shapes and various modifications can be made to the particular details described above.
For example, coatings significantly thicker or thinner than those within the limits of 0.38-0.64 mm may be preferred for particular applications. Likewise, the coating can be applied on a mold element which can be either a fixed part,
or a detachable part of the mold, and the application can be carried out by various means other than metallization. Said element can be immersed in a container containing a suspension. of a coating material in a suitable vehicle capable of
cause sufficient adhesion between the particles from which said material is called upon to be formed and the mold,
so that these particles are not carried away by metal entering the mold during the <B> </B> molding operation. The carrier of the particles may be of such a nature that, after it has evaporated,
the exposed surface of the layer has become rough and has pits or pits similar to those in the surface of a sprayed layer.
A coating material of a similar type can be applied to the mold by brush or paintbrush; and one could also resort to a machining operation to create a preferred rough surface on a primarily even and smooth layer.
In practicing the present process, it is generally preferable, for reasons of economy, to apply a coat over a mold element or part which is separable from the rest of the machine.
By operating in this manner, it becomes possible to coat a series of mold elements with the plain layer, as a preliminary operation, and then to use these elements as and when required so that the cycle of the machine is not, idle. However,
if preferred for some reason, the coating can be applied to a mold (or mold member) which is mounted in a casting machine.
The cylinder sleeve or sleeve 30 obtained as described is a part having a smooth and polished surface, but the present process lends itself equally effectively to the manufacture of other parts, for which, a surface other than smooth. and regular,
for example urn surface having one of the sin is preferred. In such a case, it suffices to provide the desired pattern on the surface of the mold element so that, when the layer is applied to said element, this layer follows the contour of this element and, during transplantation,
communicates this same contour to the exposed surface of the bent part.
A metallized layer or coating, or obtained by spraying a metal in the divided state, has, by reason of the very method of application, small cavities.
For most applications, it is preferable that the thickness and density of the layer are sufficient so that the cavities do not completely penetrate the layer to prevent, during molding, mold.
molten metal creates a passage through the cavities to the surface intended to be exposed. The density of the layer can be changed in different ways, depending on:
technique adopted to apply this layer to the mold. If the layer is applied by spraying, one will be able to modify its density by modifying the distance which separates the metallization gun from the mold, as well as.
known in the art of metallization, whereas, if it is applied by immersion or by painting, its density can be modified by modifying the composition of the mixture.
The castings produced by the present process can easily be coated with continuous layers of thick:
variable sor and various properties. For example, a cylinder sleeve or sleeve for a combustion engine. internal is subjected to uneven wear, uneven thermal fatigue,
and uneven exposure to corrosive substances settling from end to end. The zone forming part of the combustion chamber is that which is exposed to the highest temperature and which is subject to the maximum wear,
besides that it is this zone which must show the maximum resistance to the action of corrosive deposits resulting from combustion. Immediately below this zone, that is to say in the part swept by the piston,
the temperatures encountered decrease RTI ID = "0003.0248" WI = "25" HE = "4" LX = "1213" LY = "1006"> gradually and, below the level of the upper inversion point of the pis ton segments , wear is much: lower.
At the lower end of the cylinder, wear is limited and its highest concentration is at the lower reversal point of the piston rings,
located at their lower dead center. The most advantageous way to form the coating layer in the casting would therefore be to ensure that said layer has its maximum resistance to heat and corrosion at the top,
that its resistance to wear is maximum at the levels of the reversal of the piston rings and that it ensures the retention of oil and a little more moderate wear resistance in the,
intermediate parts. An uninterrupted layer composed of annular bands made of different materials and having different thicknesses can be formed on core 14 for stated purposes. Stainless steels,
ceramics and similar materials can be used for the portions of the sleeve or sheath which are exposed to the most severe conditions,
whereas one can use a layer of molybdenum for the portions subjected to the maximum wear and much less expensive layers of steel for them. remaining portions of the socket.
