nel.
On l'identifie
On obtient dans chaque cas le sulfure divinylique correspondant. Par exemple, à partir du 1, 4-xylènedithiol, on obtient le 1, 4-bis- (vinylthiométhyl)-ben- zène qui est un solide fondant à 60-610 C ; à partir du 1, 3-propane-dithiol, on obtient le 1, 3-bis- (vinyl- thio)-propane, distillant à 60 C/0, 3 mm et ayant un indice de réfraction nui de 1, 5514 ; à partir du 1, 4butane-dithiol, on obtient le 1, 4-bis- (vinylthio)-bu- tane, distillant à 810 C/0, 75 mm ;
à partir du 1, 5 pentane-dithiol, on obtient le 1, 5-bis- (vinylthio)-pentane, distillant à 85, 5 C/0, 24mm.
Exemple 6

(N, N-diéthyl-amino)-éthanethiol, (N, N-dibutyl-ami- no)-éthanethiol, 4-amino-butanethiol, 4- (N-méthyl- amino)-butanethiol, 4-(N, N-diméthyl-amino)-butane- thiol, 2-morpholino-éthanethiol, 2-pyrrolidino-éthane- thiol, 2-pipéridino-éthanethiol, ou autres aminoalcanethiols hétérocycliques.

Process for the preparation of S-vinyl thioethers
The present invention relates to a process for preparing S-vinyl thioethers.
Heretofore, the formation of thioethers having an S-vinyl group has been carried out by passing a mixture of acetylene and an inert gas through a heated thiol containing a compound of an alkali metal, zinc or cadmium. Although vinyl thioethers are formed, a thiol molecule tends to add to the vinyl compound to give dithioethers (depending on the reaction:
RSCH = CHg + RSH-RSCHLCHsSR) the degree of this reaction depending on thiol, catalyst, and other conditions which cannot always be easily controlled. Handling acetylene under these conditions presents a clear risk, which is reduced in part by the use of an inert gas as a diluent.
This, however, requires the handling and recirculation of large volumes of gas. Under the conditions initially proposed, it turns out that the reaction is extremely slow.
The patentee observed that one of the difficulties encountered in this reaction system is due to the insolubility in said system of the added catalyst or of the mercaptide formed therefrom. Insoluble material may settle out or become relatively ineffective for a given amount of catalyst added, or it may require the addition of relatively large proportions of catalyst. Some improvement has been noted by suspending the catalyst in a system containing an inert solvent, but without removing the main cause of the difficulty.
Dioxane has been proposed as a solvent for use with dithiols. This compound does not, however, prevent the separation of the metallic mercaptide, but rather provides a dilute reaction medium in which the catalyst can more easily be kept in suspension by stirring while continuously discharging acetylene gas at reaction temperatures. The known processes applied to thiols or dithiols in the presence of a diluent, however, still have the risks and limitations mentioned above.
The process for preparing S-vinyl thioethers from thiols and acetylene, which is the subject of the invention, is characterized in that a thiol free of acid-reacting substituents and olefinic unsaturation is mixed and acetylenic, a liquid saturated alcohol, a catalyst containing a strongly basic alkali metal compound and an organic solvent which does not react under the conditions of the process having a solubility of at least 18 volumes of acetylene measured per volume of solvent at 00 C and under a pressure of one atmosphere,
in that a quantity of acetylene at least equivalent to the quantity of thiol contained in said mixture is absorbed in the mixture thus obtained at a temperature below 100 ° C. and under pressure, and in that the mixture containing acetylene in liquid phase at a temperature between 100 and 2000 C under a pressure sufficient to prevent desorption of acetylene.
Therefore, thiols free from acid reacting substituents and olefinic unsaturations are used. and acetylenic. Groups such as sulfonic or carboxylic, or a hydrogen atom bonded to a carbon atom and contiguous to a nitro group interfere with the reaction by destroying the catalyst.
The thiols used can be represented by the general formula: R (SH) n, in which n is an integer, in particular one or two, and
R is an alkyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl or aryl residue which is unsubstituted or substituted by substituents satisfying the requirements mentioned above.
Thiols of this kind are for example the following: methanethiol, ethanethiol, 1-butane-thiol, 2butan-thiol, 1-hexane-thiol, 2-ethyl-1-hexane-thiol, 1-octane-thiol, 2-ootane -thiol, 2-methyl-2-propanethiol, 1, 1, 3, 3-tetramethylbutanethiol, decanethiol, tb tradecanethiol, hexadecanethiol, octadecanthiol, cyclohexanethiol, 3-methyl-cyclohexanethiol, 4-butyl-cyclohexanethiol, 3-butyl-cyclohexanethiol, 3-benzenethiol, 2- -or 4-methyl-benzenethiol, 4-butyl-benzenethiol, 2 naphthalenethiol, 8-bromo-1-naphthalbnewthiol, thioresorcinol, a-toluene-thiol, a-methyl-a'-toluane-thial,

The amount of the solvent in the reaction mixture is usually between 10 and 50% of the latter, which amounts may be somewhat lower or higher in some cases.
What is important is to use enough solvent to ensure that any given reaction system will dissolve at least a stoichiometric amount of acetylene based on the thiol content of the mixture at the reduced temperature and under. pressure.
Liquid saturated alcohol generally serves as a diluent and helps maintain the homogeneity of the reaction system by serving to dissolve the catalyst.
Alcohols which are preferably used are, for example, methanol, ethanol, propanol, butanol, exhanol, octanol, dodecanol, mixtures of alkanols, including those which may have up to at
18 carbon atoms, methoxyethanol, butoxyethanol, octoxyethanol, dodecyloxyethanol, phenoxyethanol, ethoxypropanol, butoxypropanol, octoxypropanol, ethoxybutanol, ethoxyethoxy ethanol, methoxymethoxyethanol, butoxyethoxyethanol , ethoxypropoxyethanol, ethoxyethoxyethoxyethanol, butoxypropoxyethoxyethanol,
diethylene glycol or triethylene glycol.
In general, the proportion of alcohol should be sufficient to maintain the catalyst in solution and hence the homogeneity of the reaction mixture. The percentage of alcohol in the reaction mixture will vary with the choice of alcohol applied as solvent, thiol and catalyst. In general, the amount of alcohol is proportional to that of the catalyst. Usually, alcohol constitutes 20 to 35% of the reaction mixture.
Strongly basic alkali metal compounds which may be added as catalysts are, for example, alkali metal oxides, hydroxides, cyanides, sulfides, alcoholates and mercaptides.
The alcoholates generally used are lithium, sodium or potassium methylate, ethoxide or butoxide, or the alkali metal alcoholate of the alcohol used as a solvent, including alkanols or ether alcohols, as mentioned above can be applied. , or other alcohols as defined above.
It is sometimes convenient to have recourse to an alkali metal mercaptide, in particular reacted thiol, which is advantageously taken up in the alcohol used in the reaction mixture.
The amount of catalyst applied is normally 1 to 10% and preferably about 2 to 5% of the thiol, these percentages being calculated on a molecular basis. There are cases, however, where it may be appropriate to use more than 10 mole percent; for example, it is even possible to adopt proportions equivalent to thiol. For example, with 1,2-ethane-dithiols, a stoichiometric proportion of the catalyst is preferably applied, since in the presence of lower proportions of catalyst the products tend to consist predominantly of polymers of vinyl sulfides.
As low a free volume of gas as possible should be kept in the absorption vessel. If desired, the acetylene provided for absorption may contain an inert gas, which serves as a diluent. Since inert gases, such as nitrogen or methane, are not very soluble in the reaction medium, they are not absorbed and can be removed and easily put back into circulation.
When handling acetylene, take the usual precautions.
The process according to the invention can be implemented in the following manner: the acetylene is passed through a solution comprising a thiol, an alcohol, a solvent and a catalyst as defined above, while maintaining this mixture at a temperature. temperature below 10 ° C., temperatures between 10 ° C. and -200 ° C. generally being suitable. By suitably choosing the conditions, the solvent and the alcohol, and by applying the latter in the proportions indicated below and under pressures ranging up to approximately 30 atmospheres, an amount of acetylene at least sufficient to react with is introduced. almost all of the thiol.
It is often advantageous to have an excess of acetylene relative to the thiol, since under these conditions the thiol is substantially converted to vinyl sulfide, thereby avoiding a troublesome side reaction of the unconverted thiol with the vinyl sulfide. The mixture charged with acetylene is then passed entirely in the liquid phase through a heating zone, in which the mixture is heated to a reaction temperature of between 100 and 2000 C, preferably between 140 and 190 C; the residence time at these temperatures need not be more than ten minutes to ensure substantially complete conversion to vinyl thioether.
Usually times of 0.5-10 minutes are adopted, although longer residence times are not detrimental under the conditions described. In the reaction zone or heating zone, the liquid mixture is maintained at pressures sufficient to prevent desorption of the acetylene and to maintain the mixture entirely in the liquid state. Usually pressures of 70 to 350 kg / cm2 or more are applied. The reaction mixture is then treated so as to separate the vinyl thioether formed. This requires a pressure reduction with degassing and a distillation of the various constituents of the reaction mixture. The solvent, alcohol and catalyst are recycled, while the vinyl thiooth can be purified at will.
In the examples parts are given by weight unless otherwise indicated.
Example 1
4.1 parts of sodium in 237 parts of n-butanol are added under a nitrogen atmosphere. After the sodium has dissolved, 376 parts of dodecanethiol and 127 parts of methylal are added. This mixture is cooled to about 0 ° C. and treated with acetylene until 78 parts are absorbed, a pressure of 16.8 kg / cm2 on a gauge being necessary.
The liquid mixture is then passed, under sufficient pressure to prevent desorption of acetylene, through a heated reaction zone where a temperature of 188-190oC is reached. The length of stay in this area is 5.6 minutes.
The reaction mixture is removed from the reaction zone, the pressure is relieved and the mixture distilled by flash evaporation under reduced pressure. The distillate thus obtained is carefully fractionated. The methylal is recovered at 42-440 C. A fraction of butanol and butyl vinyl ether at 59-640 C / 60 mm is recovered, from which 15 parts of butyl vinyl ether are obtained. At 124-126 C / 1.7 mm we obtain the
Dodecyl-vinyl sulfide in 92% conversion based on dodecanethiol.
Example 2
(a) A solution of 3.3 parts of sodium in 74 parts of n-butanol is prepared. This solution is mixed with 235 parts of mercaptoethanol and 172 parts of dimethoxymethane. The mixture thus obtained is cooled to 4 ° C. and treated with acé
tylene under pressure until 106 parts are
absorbed, the equilibrium pressure being 14.7 kg / cm2
to the manometer. The liquid mixture is pumped back through a heated coil, reaching
a temperature of 176 -177 C. The length of stay
is 5.3 minutes. The reaction mixture is distilled
nel. The desired product is obtained in the form of a fraction distilling at 85-860 C / 20 mm.
We identify it
as being p-hydroxy-ethyl-vinyl sulfide. The
yield is 97% based on mercaptoetha
nol consumed.
(b) To 234 parts of mercaptoethanol is added
6 parts sodium hydroxide, 186 parts one
alcohol containing about 90% dodecyl alcohols
and tetradecyl and about 5% decyl alcohol
and 5% hexadecyl alcohol and 180 parts of di
methoxyethane. This mixture is then charged to a mixing vessel through which acetylene is passed until 88 parts are absorbed. The temperature is between 7 and 10 C and the pressure is 17.5 kg / cm2 at the manometer. This mixture is then passed through a heated reaction zone maintained at 150 ° C. The residence time is four minutes.
The reaction mixture thus obtained is subjected to flash distillation in vacuo until all of the dimethoxyethane and 3-hydroxy-ethyl-vi, nyl sulfide are removed.
Bottoms containing the mixture of high boiling alcohols and catalyst are then used for recycle, if desired. The distillate from the flash distillation is fractionated under reduced pressure; dimethoxyethane passes to 360- 37O C / 140 mm and 255 parts of hydroxy-ethyl-vinyl sulfide pass to 870 C / 20 mm. The yield of vinyl sulphide is approximately 80%. The advantage of this particular process resides in the use of a less volatile alcohol which acts as a vehicle for the catalyst and allows recycling without complete resolution of the reaction mixture.
Example 3
6.0 parts of sodium hydroxide are dissolved in 100 parts of anhydrous methanol. To this solution are added 270 parts of tert. butanethiol and 136 parts of methylal. Acetylene is passed through this mixture, while cooling to about 00 ° C., until 98 parts have been absorbed under a pressure of 17.5 kg / cm 2 on a pressure gauge. The mixture is then passed, at a pressure sufficient to maintain the liquid state exclusively, through a heated reaction zone where a temperature of 190 ° C. is reached. The residence time is 6 to 7 minutes. The reaction mixture is distilled and the distillate fractionated.
A fraction of 290 parts is obtained at 610 C / 117 mm, which is identified as being tert-sulphide. vinyl butyl.
A mixture containing methanol and tert-sulphide is also obtained at 340-600 C / 120 mm. vinyl butyl, from which the latter is recovered after having removed the methanol by washing.
Example 4
To 210 parts of anhydrous ethanol are added, under a nitrogen atmosphere, 4.6 parts of sodium, which is allowed to dissolve. To the solution thus obtained we add
84.7 parts dimethoxyethane and 240 parts sea
ethyl captoacetate. This mixture is cooled to
Approximately 0O C and the acetylene charge until
73 parts were absorbed at 14 kg / cm on the manometer. The liquid mixture is then passed under pressure through a heated reaction zone where a temperature of 140 ° C. is reached. The residence time is three minutes. The reaction mixture is then flash distilled under reduced pressure and the distillate fractionated.
A fraction of 175 parts is obtained at 83-85o C / 20 / mm, the composition of which corresponds to CaH, OOCH2SCH = CH 3.
This corresponds to a conversion of 60%.
Example 5
46 parts of sodium are dissolved in 452 parts of anhydrous methanol, under a nitrogen atmosphere.
94 parts of ethanedithiol and 83.6 parts of dimethoxyethane are added to this solution. About 72 parts of acetylene are charged into the mixture at 40 ° C., reaching a pressure of 21 kg / cm 2 on a manometer.
The mixture thus charged is driven, under a pressure sufficient to prevent desorption of the acetylene, through a heated reactor where a temperature of 1400 ° C. is reached. The residence time is three minutes. After passing the reaction mixture through an expansion valve, the methanol and dimethoxyethane are discharged under reduced pressure. The residue, containing the catalyst, the product and the high boiling by-products, is dissolved in water and extracted with ethyl ether. The ethereal solution is evaporated to obtain an oil which is distilled off under reduced pressure, then the distillate is fractionated.
At 920 C / 13 mm 67 parts by weight of product are obtained which analysis identifies as 3, 6-dithiaocta-1, 7-diene.
Other dithiols are reacted in the same way, using about an equivalent amount of catalyst for these dithiols, in the case of 1, 2 ethane-dithiols. The higher dithiols apparently do not require this increased amount of catalyst.
In each case the corresponding divinyl sulfide is obtained. For example, from 1, 4-xylenedithiol, 1, 4-bis- (vinylthiomethyl) -benzene is obtained which is a solid melting at 60-610 C; from 1, 3-propane-dithiol, 1, 3-bis- (vinylthio) -propane is obtained, distilling at 60 C / 0, 3 mm and having a negative refractive index of 1.5514; from 1, 4butane-dithiol, 1, 4-bis- (vinylthio) -butane is obtained, distilling at 810 C / 0.75 mm;
from 1.5 pentanedithiol, one obtains 1, 5-bis- (vinylthio) -pentane, distilling at 85.5 C / 0, 24mm.
Example 6
A solution of 3.5 parts of sodium in 192 parts of absolute methanol is prepared under an inert atmosphere. It is combined with 270.5 parts of n-butanethiol and 192 parts of methylal. The mixture thus obtained is charged to a mixing bomb through which acetylene is passed until 98 parts have been absorbed under an equilibrium pressure of 17.5 kg / cm 2 on a gauge. This mixture, in the liquid state, is forced under pressure through a heated reaction zone where a temperature of 178 ° C. is reached. The residence time is six minutes. The reaction mixture is distilled under reduced pressure and the distillate fractionated.
At 72-730 C / 54 mm, 248 parts of the desired n-butyl-vinyl sulfide are obtained.
Similar to that shown for reacting n-butanethiol, tert. butanethiol or dodecanethiol, methanethiol, ethanethiol, 2-methyl-1-propan-thiol, 1-methyl-1-propan-thiol, hexanethiol, 2-ethyl-hexanethiol, 2-ethyl-hexanethiol, can be reacted. , decanethiol, or octadecanethiol to obtain the corresponding vinyl sulfides. Instead of the various alkanethiols that we have just described, we can in the same way have recourse
to cycloalkanethliols with a similar result.
Thus, cyclohexanethiol gives cyclohexylvinyl sulfide distilling at 71 C / 9 mm; nD25 = 1.5097; = 0.9492.
Example 7
A solution of 3.5 parts of sodium in 222 parts of n-butyl alcohol is prepared under a nitrogen atmosphere. 332 parts of thiophenol and 128 parts of methylal are added to this solution. The mixture is charged to a mixing bomb in which acetylene is absorbed at 10 ° C. to a total pressure of 21 kg / cm2 on a manometer. The mixture charged with acetylene is forced through a heated reactor where a temperature of 1860 ° C. is reached. The residence time is 4 to 5 minutes. After distillation and fractionation, 321 parts of phenyl-vinyl sulphide are obtained, ie a yield of approximately 80%, based on thiophenol.
It distills at 740 C / 7mm.
It is even possible to start from p-chloro-benzenethiol, methylbenzenethiols, butylbenzenethiols, etc., to obtain the corresponding substituted phenyl-vinyl sulfides.
Example 8
A solution of 3.5 parts of sodium in 220 parts of n-butyl alcohol is prepared under a nitrogen atmosphere. 372 parts of benzylmercaptan (α-toluene-thiol) and 156 parts of methylal are added to this solution. The mixture is cooled to about 10 ° C. and acetylene is passed through it until 98 parts have been absorbed. The equilibrium pressure is 19.9 kg / cm2 at the pressure gauge. This liquid mixture is forced through a heated coil where it reaches a temperature of 1840. The residence time is four minutes. The reaotionnol mixture is treated in the usual manner by flash distillation, followed by careful fractionation.
The fraction passing at 101-104 C / 10 mm has a composition corresponding to benzyl vinyl sulfide. 454 parts are obtained, ie a conversion of 80% with respect to benzylmercaptan.
Example 9
A solution is prepared from 4.9 parts of potassium in 220 parts of butyl alcohol, then mixed with 133 parts of methylal and 312.5 parts of 2-amino-benzenethiol. This mixture is treated with acetylene and cooled below 00 ° C. until 87 parts of acetylene have been absorbed, the equilibrium pressure being 19.6 kg / cm2 at a manometer. The liquid mixture is forced under pressure, in order to prevent desorption of the acetylene, through a heated coil, reaching a temperature of 185 ° C. and with a residence time of 4.5 minutes. The mixture is processed. reaction as above by flash distillation of the mixture, followed by fractionation.
The fraction containing the desired product, namely 2-amino-phenyl-vinyl sulfide, is obtained at 110.51120 C / 5 mm. The yield is 70%.
Example 10
To 202 parts of n-butyl alcohol is added 6 parts of potassium under a nitrogen atmosphere.
After all of the potassium has entered into the reaction, 250 parts of 2-amino-ethanethiol and 114 parts of dimethoxyethane are added. This mixture is then charged to a mixing vessel in which acetylene is passed until 98 parts have been absorbed at a temperature of 10 ° C. and a pressure of 21.7 kg / cm2 on a gauge.
The mixture is then passed through a heated reaction zone, with a residence time of 4 minutes at 175 ° C. The reaction mixture thus obtained is evacuated and flash distilled under vacuum. The distillate is subjected to fractional distillation; n-butyl alcohol and a little n-butyl-vinyl ether pass between 35 and 600 C / 60 mm.
The 2-amino-ethyl-vinyl sulfide increases to 66-670 C / 200 mm; the yield is 55%.
We start in the same way from (N-methyl-amino-ethanethiol, (N, N-dimethyl-amino) -ethanethiol,
(N, N-diethyl-amino) -ethanethiol, (N, N-dibutyl-amino) -ethanethiol, 4-amino-butanethiol, 4- (N-methyl-amino) -butanethiol, 4- (N, N -dimethyl-amino) -butan-thiol, 2-morpholino-ethanethiol, 2-pyrrolidino-ethanethiol, 2-piperidino-ethanethiol, or other heterocyclic aminoalkanethiols. In each case a vinyl thioether is obtained.
Using the procedures described above, phenoxyethyl-vinyl sulfide can be prepared as other typical thioethers, distilling at 890 C / 0.65 mm and having a refractive index, nD, of
1.5633 and a density, dfi2, of 1.0791; tetrahydrofurfuryl-vinyl sulfide distilling at 840 C / 10.5 mm and having a refractive index K of 1.5097
is a density, d20, of 1.0393;
or thenyl-vinyl sulfide, distilling at 780 C / 3 mm and having a refractive index, nest, of 1.5972 and a specific gravity of 5 of 1.1868.
The process of the invention is straightforward and safe and can easily be carried out on a continuous and (or) cyclical basis with the maximum use of all substances. It avoids handling the gaseous acetylene at high temperature under pressure. It gives high conversions and yields, avoiding by-products.
Vinyl thioethers are useful as monomers to form polymers, including both homopolymers and copolymers, which have a wide range of applications, for example for coating, molding and casting. Due to the reactive bond between sulfur and the vinyl group, vinyl thioethers serve as chemical intermediates. For example, they add together with compounds having reactive hydrogen through the double bond to give compounds useful for killing plant pests, plasticizing resins, etc. Vinyl thioethers are also useful as insecticides, additives for lubricating oils, solvents, etc.
