Process for chemical nickel-plating The invention relates to a process for chemical nickel-plating of an object with a catalytically active surface in which it is immersed in a bath containing nickel and hypophosphite ions. The catalytically active surface is understood to be one whose material has the property of catalyzing the redox reaction between: the nickel and hypophosphite ions, with a deposit or precipitation of metallic nickel on the catalytic surface.
Such surfaces can z. B. made of iron or with metallic growth cores provided plastics such. B. are described in Swiss Patent No. 330497 exist.
It is known that certain physico-chemical conditions are essential for a satisfactory deposit.
First and foremost, this bath must contain certain proportions of the reacting substances, namely preferably a ratio of Ni ++ to H2P02 between 0.25 and 1.60, an absolute concentration of H2P02 between 0.15 and 1.20 mol / liter, a pH between 4.5 and 5.6 due to the presence of a buffer substance and the addition of an alkali depending on the reaction.
The latter is expediently carried out at the highest possible temperature, which is close to the boiling point of the bath.
It has also been found that for a good degree of efficiency, i.e. for a deposition rate that is sufficiently high for the industrial utilization of the process, the bath must contain an agent called an activator, which preferably consists of a saturated, aliphatic dicarboxylic acid with 3 to 6 C, such as B. succinic acid.
It is also known that the amount of nickel salt to be reduced to metallic nickel can be regulated and at the same time the service life of the bath can be extended by adding complexing agents consisting of alpha or beta aminocarboxylic acids, which can be present in the form of zwitterions.
Instead of the activating or complexing acids, salts of these acids can also be used for the same purpose.
The role of these agents is as follows: The activator has to accelerate the reaction. The complexing agent has to create a complex with the nickel ions which, depending on its dissociation constant, i.e. depending on its nature and stability, leaves a more or less large part of free nickel ions in the bath, which ions can be reduced solely by the hydrogen produced.
So it is a means that more or less delays the reaction.
The subject of the invention now forms a method which aims to exploit the properties of the two types of agents simultaneously, without, however, one would interfere with the effect of the other, in such a way that, as a result of this simultaneous presence, the course of the reaction is monitored and in Balance can be kept.
The method according to the invention is characterized in that the object to be nickel-plated is immersed in a bath which contains a sufficient amount of an activating agent to increase the nickel plating rate and such an amount of an agent which leads the nickel ions to complex formation and is different from the activating agent,
that practically all nickel ions in the bath are complexly bound. According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, a compound of the general formula: Y-R-X (1) is selected as the complexing agent, in which R is an aliphatic radical, X is a group with a dissociable hydrogen atom of acidic character, such as.
B. -COOH, and Y is a radical with a negative atom acting as a coordination center, such as in the groups -OH, = C = O, NH2, = NH, where X and Y are to each other in a- or, B- Position.
The activating agent selected at the same time will preferably be an aliphatic dicarboxylic acid with a single saturated chain with 3 to 6 carbon atoms.
Since the effect of all these agents has already been explained in earlier applications, a more detailed description of them can be omitted here. Attention is only drawn to the fact that among the various compounds defined by the above general formula (1), those described in the examples below are particularly suitable for carrying out the invention.
In the following tables some examples are described which are intended to explain the invention in more detail. Table I shows the nickel plating speed of baths which contain succinic acid as accelerators and compounds of various types as complexing agents.
Table II shows the effectiveness of the two additives complexing agent and accelerator on the basis of the nickel-plating speed.
Table III gives the composition of continuously working baths for the treatment of steel and Bakelite (registered trademark) (Bakelite is known to be nickel-plated in a similar way to steel; cf. e.g. Swiss Patent No. 330497).
Table IV illustrates the test results of baths containing sodium succinate as an accelerator and various alcohols and acids of the sugar series and various amino acids, amino alcohols and amines as complexing agents.
Table V shows the test results of baths which contain various amino acids as accelerators and 58 citric acid (0.0675 mol / liter) as complexing agents in the bath and 59 malic acid (0.135 mol / liter) in the bath.
The nickel plating baths listed in Tables IV and V always contained 0.0675 mol / liter nickel chloride and 0.225 mol / liter sodium hypophosphite.
