<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

Device for cooling hot burned material coming from a kiln in a granular or powdery state. The invention relates to a device for cooling hot, burned material coming from a kiln in a granular or powdery state, which is produced in the furnace by a fuel burnt in the latter. Air mixture is heated.
Goods of this type include clay, magnesia, kieselguhr, etc. and also include cement burnt by the so-called fluidized bed process.
The cooling of hot alumina fired in a rotary kiln has hitherto usually been carried out in rotary coolers and in coolers which include cooling chambers arranged in a planetary arrangement on the furnace at its lower end. In such coolers, cooling is effected by the passage of air in contact with the material, and the air which has absorbed heat from the material is then passed into the rotary kiln to take part in the burning process. Burnt alumina is of such fineness that it is easily entrained in the flow of cooling air and as a result, when using coolers with rotating and planetary chambers, the rotary kiln becomes so dusty that it is difficult to control the burning of the fuel. to achieve the desired economy.
Another disadvantage of such coolers is the high investment costs and heat loss due to radiation. Rotary coolers are also expensive to maintain and operate.
The invention is accordingly directed to creating a cooling device which is suitable for cooling hot material of great fineness coming from a kiln, and overcomes the above-mentioned disadvantages of known coolers. The device according to the invention is characterized by means to generate an air flow, by further means for guiding hot material emptied from the furnace into the air flow, which is conveyed and cooled in suspension therein, by a separating means, to the air flow with the material suspended therein pick up and separate the goods from the air, and through a connection,
in order to lead the air separated from the material from the separating means to the kiln for use in the combustion of fuel in the kiln. If desired, the goods can be cooled further by means of another. Introducing the same in a stream of air to be conveyed in suspension and further cooled. However, the material can also be passed out of the separator into a cooler, in which it is kept in a flowable manner during cooling.
The invention is then explained, for example, with reference to the drawing. 1 shows a schematic elevation of an embodiment of a cooling device according to the invention on a rotary kiln; 2 and 3 are schematic side elevations, with parts broken away, of systems showing other embodiments of the cooling device according to the invention; 4 shows a schematic perspective view of another furnace installation with a cooling device according to the invention.
The system shown in Fig. 1 has a rotary kiln 10 with a hood 11, into which the emptying end of the furnace located below protrudes; a burner tube 12 extends through the hood 11 into one end of the rotary kiln 10 adjoining this.
The hot, burnt, out of the oven
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Trending material, in the present case it can be burnt clay, falls into a separating device 13 at the bottom of the hood 11, which device is provided at its lower end with downwardly converging ventilation chambers 14, which have porous inner walls and are supplied with compressed air through lines 15 . An outlet 16 with a rotary slide valve 17 leads from the bottom of the separation device between the ventilation chambers 14, and an overflow pipe 18 leads from the separation device 13 above the ventilation chambers 14.
The granular or powdery burned material entering the separating device is brought into suspension by air that enters it through the porous walls of the ventilation chambers 14, while too large portions such as lumps or pieces of the furnace lining sink through the suspended material and into the outlet 16 enter, from which they are emptied by turning the rotary valve 17. The suspended material continuously leaves the separating device 13 through the overflow pipe 18.
A cyclone separator 19 is provided which has an air inlet to which a line 20 is connected. The separator 19 has an air outlet at the top and an outlet for solids at its bottom; As will be explained in more detail below, the material flowing through this latter outlet makes it impossible for atmospheric air to enter the separator 19.
For this purpose, the separator 19 has an outlet line 21 which opens into a chamber 22 which has means for ventilating the material entering it, and the chamber 22 has an outlet pipe 23 at a level above the lower end of the line 21. With this arrangement, the chamber 22 contains a quantity of material above the lower end of the tube 21, and the material prevents atmospheric air from entering the separator 19.
A pipe 24 leads from the air outlet of the separator 19 to the air inlet of a second cyclone separator 25, which has an outlet for solids at its bottom. A pipe 25a leading from the last-mentioned outlet conducts the material collected in the separator 25 into the line 20; the tube 25a has a sealing emptying device with a weighted slide 26 at its lower end. The separator 25 has an air outlet at the top which is connected by a pipe 25b to the inlet of a blower 27, the outlet of which is connected to the hood 11 by a pipe 28.
The overflow pipe 18 from the separating device 13 extends into the line 24, so that the material is emptied from the separating device 13 into the air stream which flows from the separator 19 to the separator 25.
During operation of the system according to FIG. 1, granular or powdery material is freed from excessively large fractions in the separating device 13 and enters the air flow going from the separator 19 to the separator 25 and is suspended therein.
The material is cooled while it is carried in suspension in the air stream which continues to flow through the line 24 and also in the separator 25; the material emerging from the outlet for solids of the separator 25 is guided through the pipe 25a into a stream of fresh air which flows through the pipe 20 to the separator 19. The material is carried in suspension in this air stream and enters the separator 19, where the solid substances are separated from the air and continuously and automatically emptied by the sealing emptying device at the outlet for solid substances in the separator 19.
The air flows from the separator 19 through the pipe 24 to the separator 25, as described above, and further via the air outlet of the separator 25 to the fan 27 and enters the rotary kiln 10 to serve as secondary combustion air.
In the system described, the granular or powdery hot material is thus cooled in two stages while it is carried in suspension in the air, and the air used for cooling and thereby heated is used in the furnace, so that good heat economy is achieved. If desired, some of the air conveyed by the fan 27 can be used in the fuel-primary air mixture.
In the system according to FIG. 2, the hot, burned material emptied from the furnace inside the furnace hood 29 enters the funnel 30 at the bottom of the hood 29 and is passed through a line 31 which contains a counterweight flap 32 into a stream of atmospheric air , which flows through a riser 33. The pipe 33 leads up to the air inlet of a cyclone separator 34, which has an air outlet at the top, from which a pipe 35 continues. The separator 34 also has an outlet for solids at its bottom,
from which the separated solids are fed through a pipe 36 into a conveyor 37. Such a conveyor 37 has a chute and a cover with a porous diaphragm 112. Air is supplied to the chute below the diaphragm through a conduit 38. The granular or powdery material emerging from the tube 36 falls onto the diaphragm and is ventilated by the aforementioned air so that it passes through the conveyor 37 to the lower end of the same.
The air emerging from the separator 34 is intended to be used for combustion in the furnace. In order to reduce the amount of dust contained therein, a line 35 leads to the air inlet of a second cyclone separator 39. The solids separated in the cyclone 39 are discharged from the solids outlet at the bottom of the cyclone 39 through a pipe 40 in FIG the conveyor 37, and the air exiting the separator 39 is led through a pipe 41 to the inlet of a fan 42.
The fan outlet is connected to a pipe 43 extending through the hood 29
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
Chamber surrounding burner tube 45 connected; the air drawn into this chamber by the fan 42 is used for secondary combustion in the furnace. If desired, however, some of the air can be withdrawn from the tube 43 and used to produce the fuel / primary air mixture supplied to the burner tube 45. A pipe 46 leads from the pipe 43 to the riser 33 below the connection from the pipe 31 to the riser 33; tubes 43 and 46 contain throttles 47 and 48 by which the amount of air passing through the two tubes can be regulated.
The provision of the pipe 46 enables a fairly constant air velocity to be maintained in the pipe 33 when the furnace is operated at different power levels.
The solids emptied from the separators 34 and 39 into the conveyor 37 are passed on from the conveyor 37 at its lower end through a line 49 into a cooler 50. This cooler 50 can be of the type shown on the right in FIG. 3, which has a housing 51 with a material inlet 81 on its upper part and a material outlet 52 at the top on a side wall opposite the material inlet 81. Between the inlet 81 and the outlet 52, the cooler 50 is provided with a plurality of vertical partial walls 53 in such a way that the material entering the inlet 81 has to move along a winding path before it reaches the outlet 52.
At the bottom, the housing 51 has a ventilation chamber 54 with a porous upper wall 55 and a tight lower wall 56. Air is introduced into the chamber 54 through a supply tube 57, whereupon the air exits the chamber 54 through the permeable upper wall 55 and thereafter the material penetrated in the housing 51 in order to ventilate it and to keep it in suspension. On its way from the inlet 81 to the outlet 52, the suspended material is cooled by means of a cooling medium passing through a series of tubes 58, which tubes 58 form snakes running between the partition walls 53 within the housing 51.
During operation of the system according to FIG. 2, the hot material emerging from the furnace enters the air flow moving through the riser pipe 33 and experiences a first cooling while it is conveyed to the separator 34 in suspension. The solids removed from the air in the separator 34 enter the conveyor 37, as does additional material removed from the air stream within the separator 39. The material moving through the conveyor 37 enters the cooler 50, where the second cooling takes place, and after exiting the cooler 50 through the outlet 52, the temperature has been brought to the desired end value.
In the system according to FIG. 3, the fired material emptied from the furnace inside the furnace hood 59 enters the funnel 60, from which it is guided through a pipe 61 into a separating device 62. The device 62 has a container 63, the bottom of which is formed by downwardly converging ventilation chambers 64, and an outlet 65 with slide 66 leading from the lower ends of the chamber 64. Air is supplied to the ventilation chambers 64 through a supply line 67; the container 63 has an overflow pipe 68 which leads out of the container 63 at a point above the lower end of the line 61.
The granular or powdery constituents of the material entering the device 62 are conveyed further with the air through the pipe 68 out of the container 63, while too large parts sink through the remaining material particles and enter the outlet 65, from which they are emptied through the slide 66 will.
The material exiting through pipe 68 is cooled while it is conveyed in suspension in the air stream; for this purpose the pipe 68 is connected to a riser pipe 69 which receives air at its lower end through a pipe 70 which is connected to the outlet of a blower 71. The material carried in suspension upwards through the riser pipe 69 enters a separation chamber 72 with a bottom outlet for solid substances, which is connected via a pipe 73 to a pneumatic channel conveyor 74, similar in construction and operation to conveyor 37.
The chamber 72 has an air outlet which connects through a pipe 75 to the inlet of a cyclone separator. 76, which has a solids outlet at its bottom connected to the conveyor 74 by a pipe 77. The separator 76 has an air outlet at the top which is connected by a pipe 78 to a chamber 79 which surrounds the burner pipe 80 entering the furnace through the hood 59. The air emerging from the separator 76 and heated by its contact with the hot material can be used within the furnace either as primary or secondary combustion air.
The goods leaving the conveyor 74 at its lower end are passed through a pipe 81 to the inlet of the housing 51 of the previously described cooler, where the goods are subjected to the second cooling.
In the system according to FIG. 4, the material emptied from the furnace 82 inside the hood 83 enters a funnel 84, from which a plurality of tubes 85 lead the material to corresponding separating devices 86 which, in the construction and operation of the described separating device 62 of FIG. 3 are the same. Each separating device 86 has a funnel-shaped base 87, which is formed by ventilation chambers, which are supplied with air through pipes 88, and an outlet 89 with a rotary valve 90.
The outlets for the granular or powdery material from the separating devices 86 are connected by corresponding pipes 91 to riser pipes 93, which throttles 94

and extend from the upper part of a manifold 95. The manifold 95 is connected to the outlet of a blower 97 by a pipe 96.
Each riser pipe 93 leads upwards to end within a corresponding separation chamber 98, which is the same as the previously described chamber 72 according to FIG. 3 and has an outlet for solids at its lower end, which is passed through a corresponding pipe 99 with a channel conveyor associated therewith 100 is connected to which air is supplied by a blower 101. Each chamber 98 has an air outlet connected by a pipe 102 to an inlet of a cyclone separator 103 having a solids outlet at its bottom which is connected to the conveyor 100 by a pipe 104.
Each separator 103 has an air outlet at the top, which is connected by a pipe 105 to a chamber 106 common to all pipes 105, which chamber surrounds a burner pipe 107 extending through the hood 83 into the furnace. The material emptied by each conveyor 100 is passed through pipes 108 having valves 109 into the corresponding compartments of a cooler 110. Each compartment of the cooler 110 can be designed in the same way as the previously described cooler 50 according to FIGS. 2 or 3 and has an outlet 111 for the cooled goods.
During operation of the system according to FIG. 4, the material emptied from the furnace undergoes a separation treatment in the various separating devices 86, with excessively large parts of the same being removed. The granular or powdery material then moves through the various tubes 91 in order to enter the corresponding riser tubes 93 with the air flow.
The goods conveyed in suspension through the riser pipes 93 are subjected to a first cooling, and the solid substances are removed from the air streams in the separation chambers 98 and in the separators 103 and conveyed by the conveyors 100 to the cooler 110, where the goods of the final cooling treatment is subjected. The air heated by contact with the material is fed to the chamber 106 and can flow from there into the furnace for use as secondary combustion air, or, if necessary, part of the air can be used to produce the fuel / primary air mixture.
In the variant of the cooling device shown in FIG. 4 as in that shown in FIG. 3, the fan pushes fresh air through the riser pipes instead of conveying air through the system in the circuit. This has the advantage that no dust particles enter the fan. Any riser pipe 93 can also be taken out of operation in the cooling device according to FIG. B. the associated pipe 91 or the separating device 86, the separating chamber 98 or the associated cyclone separator 103 require repair.
This cooling device offers the further advantage that the number of riser pipes and associated parts put into operation can be changed according to fluctuations in the furnace output. In order to prevent the flow through a riser pipe, it is only necessary to cut off the air supply to the relevant separating device 86, which supplies material to this riser pipe, and the conveying of the material can thus be interrupted without the use of mechanical means. Another advantage of the variant of the cooling device shown in FIG. 4 is that its riser pipes are of a smaller diameter than in the case of a single riser pipe, and that a better cooling effect is achieved by using smaller pipes.
