La fig. 1 est une vue schématique montrant les phases successives de ladite mise en oeuvre du procédé;
la fig. 2 est une vue en coupe prise le long de la ligne 2-2 de la fig. 1 ;
la fig. 3 est une vue en coupe prise le long de la ligne 3-3 de la fig. 1;
la fig. 4 est une vue en coupe prise le long de la ligne 4-4 de la fig. 1 ;
la fig. 5 est une vue en coupe prise le long de la ligne 5-5 de la fig. 1;
la fig. 6 est une vue en coupe similaire à la fig. 5 montrant le bord du sac plié contre la face;
(fig. 9).
Method of closing the open end of a tubular bag
The invention relates to a method of closing the open end of a tubular bag having multiple walls and an inner wall of which is thermally sealable. This method is particularly suitable for closing the bag described in Swiss Patent No. 361189.
The method, object of the invention is characterized in that pressure is applied to the faces of the bag in an area located above the material which has been introduced into the bag to evacuate the air and align the faces of the bag, in that the inner wall is thermally sealed between the level of this material and the open end to form the bag, in that the end of the bag is folded along a line below the strip of thermal sealing, and in that this folded portion is fixed to the face of the bag.
The appended drawing illustrates, by way of example, an implementation of the method which is the subject of the invention:
Fig. 1 is a schematic view showing the successive phases of said implementation of the method;
fig. 2 is a sectional view taken along line 2-2 of FIG. 1;
fig. 3 is a sectional view taken along line 3-3 of FIG. 1;
fig. 4 is a sectional view taken along line 4-4 of FIG. 1;
fig. 5 is a sectional view taken along line 5-5 of FIG. 1;
fig. 6 is a sectional view similar to FIG. 5 showing the edge of the bag folded against the face;
figs. 7 to 12 illustrate steps in the formation of the closure by said implementation of the method.
With particular reference to the drawing, it is shown in FIG. 1 a multi-walled paper bag 20 having a thermally sealable inner wall. The illustrated bag shows the top end stepped so that the outer wall or walls 20a of the longer side of the bag extend beyond the inner wall 20b which, in turn, extends beyond. the wall or outer walls 20c of the shorter face. The advantages of this construction are fully disclosed in the patent cited above.
Once the bag has been filled (Fig. 7), pressure is applied to the faces in an area above the level of the fill. This can be done by pressure plates 21, as shown in fig. 1 and 2, plates which are able to be moved together or separately. The application of pressure to the faces of the filled bag serves to express a certain quantity of air out of this bag and to bring the faces into a superimposed position for the subsequent thermal sealing phase. Fig. 8 illustrates the bag after completion of this first phase.
The bag is then passed between a pair of guide rails 22 to a heat sealing station shown in Figs. 1 and 3. A jaw 23b is movable and cooperates with a jaw 23a for the application of heat and pressure to the upper edge of the bag. The jaw 23b contains a heating element 24 which provides a line of heat to the bag through the bar 25a attached to the jaw. Jaw 23a has a groove 25b which mates with bar 25a during the heat sealing operation. Below the thermal seal jaws and insulated from them is another pair of jaws 26a and 26b.
Jaw 26b is movable and has an impression bar 26c which mates with groove 26d located in jaw 26a and grooves in the bag below the heat seal line.
In the particular case shown, the heat seal is made along a line 27 which extends across the top edge of the heat sealable inner wall, while the groove line 28 is made across the heat sealable inner wall, just above the top edge of the short face of the outer wall
(fig. 9). This groove line facilitates the folding of the edge as described below. It will be appreciated that the heat seal line and the groove line can be positioned to meet the particular needs of the bag to which this closure method is applied.
When the thermal sealing of the inner wall has been completed, the bag is passed over a blade which turns the extended edge along the groove line 28 so that it is substantially at right angles to the legs. sides of the bag. In this angular position, the extended edge is introduced between a roll of tape 29 and a glue roll 30a. The tape roll applies a strip of tape 31 to the extended edge of the bag. This ribbon is cut by 32 knives and is long and wide enough to protrude over the edge on all three sides. If gummed tape is used, a cup 33 contains water which is supplied to the tape from rollers 34a and 34b. If ungummed tape is used, the cup 33 is filled with glue supplied analogously to the tape.
The glue roller 30a collects glue from the roller 30b rotating in the glue in the cup 35 and applies it in a strip on the edge of the extended outer wall. Fig. 10 shows the bag at this point.
The bag is then moved so that the extended edge is placed under a folding plate 36, shown in Figs. 1 and 5, a plate which is actuated to fold said extended edge along the groove line 25 against the short face of the bag (Fig. 6). The glue on the extended edge of the outer wall will hold that extended edge in the folded position while the glued tape will strengthen the closure and cover the end of the edge, ensuring a clean and watertight closure. In some cases where there are few walls or when they are light in weight, the glued upturned edge will provide sufficient and effective closure without the use of tape and this phase can be omitted. The ends of the tape are preferably folded over the side edges of the bag and secured to the opposite side as shown in fig. 12.
If the bottom of the bag has been closed in a similar manner, it is evident that both ends of the bag will have the same clean and attractive appearance (Figs. 11 and 12).
It should also be noted that the entire extended edge, consisting of the outer wall and the thermally sealed inner wall, is folded back along the upper edge of the short face and secured there. Therefore, any pressure from the contents of the bag will be against the fold line instead of against the heat seal. This is especially important in the packaging of granular substances which tend to work their way into the thermal seal and ultimately break that seal causing leakage.
In carrying out this method, a suitable horizontal conveyor can be used to move the bag through the various stages illustrated in fig. 1. Although this method has been described in connection with a particular type of bag, it is evident that the method can also be used to provide a closure analogous to other types of multi-wall paper bags having a thermally inner wall. sealable.
