<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

Mechanism for actuating the wheel of a pyrophoric lighter The invention relates to a mechanism for actuating the wheel of a pyrophoric lighter comprising a drive member for the wheel connected to the latter by a coupling with only one direction of drive as well as an actuating lever of this mechanism subjected to the action of a spring tending to maintain it in a rest position.
Such actuation mechanisms are known and in use in many lighters. Some of these mechanisms have automatic devices intended to communicate to the dial a peripheral stroke and speed independent of the speed with which the operator actuates the actuator. See, for example, Swiss patent NI 283162. These automatic devices are delicate because their operating safety often depends to a very large extent on the correct operation of each of these components.
If one of these fails and the lighter becomes unusable.
The purpose of the mechanism which is the subject of the present invention is to allow the actuation of the lighter even if the automatic device were to no longer operate. It is characterized by the fact that this actuating lever is connected to the drive member of the wheel by a rocking mechanism and by the fact that this actuating lever drives a drive member of the rocking mechanism,
which normally brings this toggle mechanism from any one of its two extreme positions defined for stops to its unstable equilibrium position from which a spring of the toggle mechanism actuates it to its other extreme position , this drive member being however capable of driving the rocking mechanism beyond its unstable equilibrium position in the event that the spring is no longer able to do so. The drawing. appended schematically and by way of example an embodiment of the mechanism according to the invention.
Fig. 1 is a sectional view thereof.
Fig. is a sectional view in another position.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view along the line II-II of FIG. 1.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view along line III-III.
The actuating mechanism of the thumbwheel 1 is fully housed in. a frame comprising a support 2 and a cover plate 3. The wheel 1 turns freely on a barrel 4 slipped on a bearing surface of the screw. 5 retaining the cover plate 3 on the support 2.
This wheel is disposed between the two arms 6 and 7 of a drive bracket 8 pivoted freely on the barrel 4 and mechanically connected to the wheel by a one-way coupling, drive of known type comprising: elastic split washer 9 driven in the angular displacements of the caliper and of which one of the lips of the slot cooperates with a front toothing 10 of the wheel 1.
A connecting rod 11 of rectangular section is articulated on two pins. 12 and 13 riveted respectively on each of the arms 6 and 7 of the caliper 8. At the opposite end, this link has two slots 14 and 15, formed symmetrically on each of its side faces and, in which a pin slides and pivots 16 carried by a lever 17 formed by two parallel arms 18 and 19 located on either side of the rod 11.
This lever 17 carries at its rear end the actuating member 20 provided with a thrust face 21 and is pivoted freely by its front end on the barrel 4 on either side of the caliper 8.
A return spring 22,
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
partially wound on a screw 23 retaining the cover plate 3 on the support 2 and acting on a pin 24, fixed between the arms 18 and 19 below the pin 16, tends to maintain the lever 17 in its rest position illustrated in solid lines in fig. 1 and which is defined by a tenon 25 and a screw 26 retaining the cover plate 3 on the support 2.
A coil spring 27, disposed inside the link 11, bears on the pin 16 and on a pin 28 fixed to the other end of this link. Under the action of this spring, the caliper 8 occupies a rest position illustrated in solid lines in FIG. 1 and defined by a stop 29 integral with the support 2.
A lever 30 formed of two parallel arms 31 and 32, located on either side of the rod 11 and between the arms 18 and 19 of the lever 17, pivots freely on the tenon 25. The front part of these arms has two fingers. . 41, 42 and thus takes the form of two forks arranged symmetrically on either side of the rod 11, while their rear part has two symmetrical slots 33 and 34 in which a pin 35 fixed to the lever 17 pivots and slides. inside the actuator 20.
A pyrophoric stone 36 slides in a housing 37 formed in the support 2. It is applied against the wheel 1 with a pressure determined by a spring 38 partially wound on the tenon 25 and whose free end is engaged in a slot 39 of the support. ; the other end rests on the support at 40.
The device described operates as follows When the user exerts a thrust f on the face 21 of the actuating member 20, it causes the lever 17 to pivot in the direction of clockwise around the barrel 4 and against the action of the return spring 22. The pin 16 of this lever 17 cooperating with the slots 14 and 15 causes the pivoting in the same direction of the rod 11 around the pins 12 and 13. Simultaneously, the pin 35 of the lever 17 cooperating with the slots 33 and 34 cause the pivoting of the lever 30 around the tenon 25 in the direction of clockwise.
As soon as the actuator has made a stroke of a determined amplitude, the lower fingers 41 of the fork-shaped front ends of the arms 31 and 32 of the lever 30 come into contact with the ends of the pin 28. which protrudes on either side of the side faces of the rod 11.
These fingers 41 then exert a thrust f i on the front end of the rod. This rod 11 then pivots around the pin 16 and drives the caliper 8 which in turn drives the wheel 1 by means of the coupling in a single drive direction.
During the first part of the movement of the rod 11, the latter is pushed back by the caliper 8 in the direction of the arrow f3 against the action of the spring 27 and slides on the pin 16. As soon as the axis 13 exceeds the unstable equilibrium position for which it is located on a straight line connecting the axis 5 of the wheel 1 to the pin 16, the spring 27 relaxes and causes a rapid movement of the caliper 8 to the position illustrated in lines mixed in fig. 1 'and defined by a stop 43 integral with the support 2. This caliper, the rod and the spring 27 therefore work in the manner of a toggle switch.
The wheel is therefore driven in a rapid rotational movement, independently of the slower movement normally communicated to the actuator by the operator, and a spark is produced. The actuator finally abuts against the support 2 at 44.
In the case of a gas lighter, the lever 17 can carry an arm. 45 intended to simultaneously cause the opening of the valve of a reservoir containing compressed gas.
When the operator releases the pressure exerted on the actuating member 20, the lever 17 pivots counterclockwise under the action of the return spring 22. The pin 35 causes the lever 30 to pivot around the tenon 25 in the same direction. The upper fingers 42 of the fork-shaped front ends of the arms 31 and 32 of this lever exert a thrust on the ends of the pin 28 thus causing the clockwise pivoting of the bracket 8. Thanks to the coupling in only one direction of drive, the wheel is not rotated this time.
As soon as the position of alignment of the axes 5, 13 and 16 is reached, the spring 27 causes the tilting of the rod and the sudden actuation of the caliper 8 into its rest position.
The lever 17 then returns to its rest position under the action of the spring 22.
The device described has several advantages over known mechanisms for actuating a thumbwheel. As clearly shown in the drawing, the lever 17 has a length approximately equal to the total length of the mechanism and, therefore, to the length of the housing intended to contain this mechanism. For a given size, the movement of the control member 20 is as close as possible to a rectilinear movement which ensures a very simple movement that is familiar to the vast majority of lighters users.
In addition, this arrangement facilitates the production of a housing of small size and pleasant shape.
At the same time, the appended drawing shows that this mechanism has a low height h because it extends over the entire width b of the housing. In reality, this mechanism has a size which is not greater than that of a mechanism of the semi-automatic type fitted to a large number of lighters currently on the market. This mechanism pre-
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
In addition, there are very long levers that do not require high machining precision and whose symmetrical construction ensures rigidity.
It is the presence of the lever 30, in particular, which makes it possible to benefit from all these advantages. Thanks to the assistance provided by the two fork-shaped fingers, it is possible to achieve a rocking mechanism operating with a reduced control stroke in both directions.
On the other hand, if for one reason or another the spring of the rocking mechanism loses its effectiveness, the operator always has the possibility, by activating the actuator with a greater speed, of turn the dial at a speed sufficient to ensure ignition in all cases. The non-operation of the rocker, that is to say of the actuation of the stirrup by the spring 27, therefore does not hinder the operation of the mechanism, which constitutes an important advantage of the mechanism described.
