The present invention relates to a tool for installing fasteners comprising a cylindrical part and a piston sliding in this cylindrical part between limit positions adjacent to the opposite ends of the cylindrical part, the the action of fitting the fasteners being ensured by the relative movement of the cylindrical part and the piston, said cylindrical part being connected to a motor assembly providing a source of pressurized fluid for driving the piston in both directions.

Accordingly, each tool includes an anvil capable of bearing on the ring and a set of jaws capable of engaging in traction grooves provided in the stud. Either the anvil, or the set of jaws or these two elements are moved so as to determine a relative movement of the parts in the opposite direction. The structure for causing this relative movement comprises a cylinder formed in the tool or gun and a piston mounted in the cylinder to move back and forth therein.
As the piston moves in a first direction, the tool anvil and the jaw assembly are moved relative to each other to depress the fastener. The piston then moves in the opposite direction to return the anvil and the jaw assembly to their relative positions where the tool is set for further depression.
In the tools currently in use in the industry, the means for reversing the direction of the piston stroke include a valve mechanism mounted in the driving tool. Therefore, such a tool is complicated and heavy and it is subject to poor mechanical adjustments. Further, because the operators of such tools are usually not able to adjust them properly, another inconvenience results from unnecessary and poor adjustments performed by the operator.
The present invention aims to remedy these drawbacks and the tool which is the subject thereof is characterized by a control switch device which serves to control the motor assembly supplying the source of pressurized fluid to drive the udder. in both directions, and by a device which is actuated by moving the piston to one of the aforementioned limit positions, to relieve the pressure of the fluid driving the piston to these limit positions.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the tool forming the subject of the present invention.

The motor assembly shown in FIG. 1 and generally designated by 10 comprises a base 12 carrying a vertical cylinder 14. A vertical tank 16 is mounted on the upper end of the cylinder 14. A cap or cover 20, from the tiné to the tank 16, is used. Also to attach a horizontal flexible diaphragm 18 to the reservoir 16. Vertical connecting bolts 22 extend between the base 12 and the cover 20 so as to hand hold the cylinder 14, the reservoir 16 and the cover 20 vertically on the. base 12.
A circular tubular handle 24 is fixed by bolts 26 to the cover 20 which has an upwardly extending bearing part 26a in which slides a tubular rod 28 fixed at its lower end to a central part of the diaphragm 18. At its upper end, the rod 28 carries a ring 27 for view of an annular flange 29 extending downwards, the radius of which is equal to the distance between a release button 31 of a safety switch 25 and the axis geometric rod.
The button 31 is mounted on a housing 33 which also supports a reset button 35 for the switch 25 which is branched in a manner described later.
The hollow base 12 serves as a housing for a valve assembly 30 (Fig. 8) which has a solenoid 32a mounted in a housing 32, and a valve 34 actuated by the solenoid 32a when energized. A fixed part 36, connected to a compressed air intake duct 38, comprises substantially parallel air passages 40, 42, 44, 46 and 48 for a reason explained below.
In the cylinder 14 can move back and forth vertically a hollow piston 50 which has a tubular central part 52 slidable vertically on a vertical piston 54 which extends downward from the bottom wall 56 of the reservoir 16 to which it is fixed. The lower wall 51 of the piston 50 closes the lower end of the tubular part 52 so as to form a fluid chamber 53 in the latter between the lower end of the piston 54 and the lower wall 51 of the piston 50.
The valve 34 can move between a first position where it is pushed back by a spring and a second position where it is brought by the solenoid 32a when it is energized. The passage 40 in the part 36 provided with valve passages communicates the valve 34 with the air line 38 in the two positions of the valve. When the valve 34 is in the position where the spring brings it, the passage 44 communicates, through the valve 34, with the air intake passage 40, and it communicates, through a passage 58 (Fig. 4). formed in the walls of cylinder 14 and of reservoir 16, with the interior of cylinder 14 on the upper face of piston 50.
In this position of the valve 34, the passage 46 which communicates with an exhaust passage 47 formed in the wall of the cylinder, communicating with the cylinder 14 under the piston 50, and the passages 42 and 48 are closed off. position of the valve 34. As a result, the piston 50 descends inside the cylinder 14.
When the valve 34 is in its position determined by the solenoid, the wise steps 44 and 46 are closed, the passage 42 communicates with the fluid chamber 53 as well as with an exhaust passage 49 formed in the wall of the cylinder, while the passage 48 communicates through the valve 34 with the intake passage 40 to send pressurized air to the cylinder 14 under the piston 50, which causes the latter to rise in the cylinder 14.
The chamber 53 and the fluid communication passages are filled with hydraulic fluid, so that when air is sent to cylinder 14 under the bottom wall 51 of piston 50 and the latter rises in the cylinder 14, the fluid is discharged from the chamber 53 by a vertical passage 60 provided in the fixed piston 54, and by a horizontal passage 62 formed in the lower wall 56 of the reservoir to a flexible duct 64 at high pressure mounted on the reservoir 16. The duct 64 is connected to a driving tool, such as those shown in FIGS. 12 to 15, intended to be actuated by the motor assembly 10.
When the circuit of the solenoid 32a is open, causing the air to under. pressure is sent to the cylinder 14 on the upper face of the piston 50, the latter is forced down into this cylinder, so that the air contained in an annular chamber 66 which surrounds the piston 50 is forced out of it. this through a horizontal passage 68 formed in the wall of the cylinder and is sent into a flexible duct 70 which is also connected to the sinking tool. As illustrated in fig. 1,
the piston 50 comprises an upper part 72 and a lower part 74 of reduced diameter relative to the latter, a horizontal shoulder 76 being provided at the junction of these parts. The cylinder 14 has bore portions 78 and 81 whose diameters correspond to those of these portions and in which the piston portions 72 and 74 slide. As the piston 50 descends, its larger diameter upper portion 72 displaces the piston. fluid contained in the annular chamber 66 to increase the pressure of the fluid and force it out of the chamber 66 and the duct 70.
It can be seen that when the valve 34 is in the position where its solenoid brings it, the pressurized air is sent to the underside of the piston 50 and is discharged from the upper face to discharge the pressurized fluid. in the duct 64. Thanks to the ratio of the surfaces of the lower ends of the pistons 50 and 54, the fluid is sent into the duct 64 under a significant pressure. When the valve 34 is returned to the position where it is biased by its spring, the pressurized air is sent to the upper face of the piston 50 and is discharged from the underside. Thus, the piston 50 is moved downward to force the pressurized fluid into the conduit 70.
This pressure in this duct is lower than that of the duct 64.
The higher pressure fluid in the pipe 64 serves to move the piston mounted in the driving tool in a driving direction of the fastener, as described in detail hereinafter. The fluid leaving the conduit 70 returns the piston of the tool to a position set for the next drive.
It has been illustrated, respectively in FIGS. 12 and 14, two driving tools 150 and 200 which are intended for use with the motor assembly 10. Since the tools 150 and 200 are conventional, in that they include the anvil, the ring and the anvil. the usual mechanical structure for moving these parts relative to one another, only the hydraulic mechanism and the control switches will be described in detail later. The tool 150 com carries a body 152 comprising a cylindrical part 154 in which a piston 156 slides.
Two fluid passages 158 and 160, formed in the valve 152 communicate with the cylindrical part or cylinder 154 on what will be called, for the convenience of the description, the lower face 162 and the face respectively. upper 164 of piston 156. Flexible conduits 64 and 70 are connected to body 152 so as to communicate with passages 158 and 160, respectively. As a result, when piston 50 is moved upward to force pressurized fluid out of the tube. Apparently through conduit 64, this fluid is sent to cylinder 154 to exert an upwardly directed force on piston 156 and then actuate tool 150 to depress the fastener to which the tool is applied.
A tubular member 166 carried by the piston 156 moves upward at the same time as the latter. The tubular member 166 carries a radially inwardly projecting pin 170 which moves in a groove 174 formed in a rod 172 actuating a switch and sliding in the tubular member 166. When the piston 156 has moved upward the distance necessary to bring the pin 170 to the upper end of the groove 174, a further rise of the piston raises the rod 172 to open a switch 136 connected to the lower end upper stem.
As illustrated in fig. 11, the switch 136 is mounted in a general circuit 130 which comprises the conventional conductors L1 and L2, the solenoid 32c, the safety switch 25 for the tank and a switch 134 actuated by a trigger 180 mounted on the tool 150. .
During the depression of a fastening element, the operator actuates the trigger 180 to close his switch 134 and energize the solenoid 32a which then moves the valve 34 as previously described, which causes assembly 10 to operate to move tool piston 156 in a driving direction. At the end of the depressing stroke of the piston 156, the switch 136 is opened by the actuating rod 172, so that the solenoid 32a is automatically de-energized.
Valve 34 is recalled, and motor assembly 10 operates to force pressurized fluid through conduit 70 and piston 50 to return tool piston 156 to a position where it is ready for a new one. gun operation. Of course, the operator relinquishes trigger 180 when switch 136 is open, as it is evident that movement of tool 150 to embed a fastener is complete. The return of the piston 156 to a position where it bears against the lower wall 182 of the cylinder has the effect of bringing the axis 170 against the rod 172 at the lower end of the groove 174 and of moving the rod 172 towards down to close switch 136 again.
The driving tool 200 likewise comprises a body 202 comprising a cylindrical part 204 in which a piston 206 can move back and forth. Passages 208 and 210 formed in the handle 209 of the tool communicate via other passages 211 and 213, respectively, with the opposite ends of the cylindrical or cylinder part 204 and are connected to the conduits 64 and 70, respectively.
The piston 206 has an extension 240 extending forwardly and disposed concentrically in an annular seal 242 mounted in the body 202. An annular slide 244 for the tubular inner end portion 246 of a fall ejection plunger 248. of studs is formed in extension 240 by inserting a smaller hollow cylinder 250 into an elongated opening in extension 240. Plunger 248 is part of an accessory device, generally designated 252, and removably mounted to the front of the tool 200 with a view to installing fasteners and rivets of the type comprising a traction pin.
The front device 252 comprises a barrel 254 comprising a radial lug 256 housed in a groove 258 formed in the body 202.
A spring 260 mounted in the cylinder 250 bears against the plunger 248 at the front end of the tubular part 246 and pushes the plunger outwardly of the tool to a stop position in which a shoulder 262 formed on the plunger bears against a shoulder 264 formed on a tubular sliding support 266 provided for the plunger 248. The sliding support 266 is disposed in an actuating sleeve 268 having at its front or outer end a chamfered annular surface 270 which bears against a similar surface 272 of a set 274 of annular jaws capable of expanding and contracting.
A ring 278 supports the outer end of the slide support 266 and bears against the inner end of the jaw assembly 274. A spring 280 extends between the ring 278 and annular lugs 282 provided on the inner end. of the slide support 266, and it pushes the jaw assembly 274 axially outwardly of the sleeve 268 to keep the chamfered surfaces 270 and 272 in contact.
A retaining ring 284 mounted in a groove 286, formed in the interior surface of the sleeve 268, holds the jaw assembly 274, the ring 278 and its associated spring 280, and the slide holder 266 assembled inside. of the handle 268, so that all these elements can be handled in one piece when the front device 252 is disassembled from the body 202 of the tool.
The barrel 254 has at its front or outer end a removable anvil 290 which can be replaced when worn or damaged. This anvil comprises at its rear end a longitudinal rim 292 which fits around the barrel 254, and a shoulder 294 which abuts against the outer end of the barrel 254. The rim 292 is radially offset from the anvil 290 so as to forming a shoulder 296 which extends radially outwardly from the outer surface of the anvil 290 for a reason which will be explained later.
Longitudinal lugs 298, provided on the outer end of the barrel 254, fit into grooves 300 in the anvil 290 for a position of the barrel within the rim 292 of the anvil. At their outer ends, the ears 298 terminate in projections 302 extending radially outwards. To retain the anvil 290 on the barrel 254, a removable retaining ring 304 extends around it between the shoulder 296 of the anvil and the projections 302 of the barrel. To remove the anvil 290 for replacement, it suffices to remove the ring 302 and remove the anvil to separate it from the barrel.
Throughout the front device 252 and the tool body 202, the inner end of the actuating sleeve 268 is screwed onto the outer end portion 306 of the piston extension 240. The barrel 254 enters the body. tool 202 to a position where it abuts against the outer end of the seal 242, the lug 256 of the barrel being disposed in a groove 308 formed in the lower side of the barrel 254. During the rotation of the barrel, the retaining ear 256 slides into the groove 258 which terminates at its ends in line with the groove 308 and it prevents the barrel from separating from the body 202.
A spring-loaded pin 310 has a larger diameter head 312 which abuts against a pin 314 extending in the groove 308 radially outward from the lug 256, so as to dispose the head 312 at the ends of the lug. groove 258 and in the path of the ear 256 so that the latter cannot accidentally come into the groove 308, which would cause the removal of the barrel 254. To remove the front device 252, it is first necessary to push in the hand axis 310 until the head 312 is no longer in the path of the ear 256.
During the operation of the tool 200, when the pressurized fluid is sent through the conduit 64 to the passage 208, the piston 206 is moved rearwardly towards an end wall 212 of the cylinder, which carries a pin 214 extending towards a ball 216 carried on the piston 206. A spring 218 urges the ball 216 towards a closed position, at one end of an axial passage for fluid 220 formed in the piston 206. The passage 220 communicates with the passage 208 by wise inclined steps 222 formed in the piston, when the ball 216 moves away from its seat by compressing the spring 218.
As a result, when the piston 206 has been brought to a position in which the pin 214 moves the ball 216 away from its seat, the tool driving operation is complete, because the fluid from the step 208 is simply evacuated through the passages 220 and 222 in the passage 210 to return to the motor assembly 10. The operator then abandons the trigger 230 of the tool, which actuates a switch such as the switch 134 coupled in series with the solenoid 32a and has the effect of opening the switch and de-energizing the solenoid; consequently, the motor assembly 10 comes into action to deliver the pressurized fluid through the conduit 70.
In the event that a full stroke of the piston 206 is not necessary for fitting the fixing element, the operator of course abandons the trigger 230 as soon as the fixing element is fitted.
Before actuating the trigger 230, the front device 252 is assembled with a fixing element to be fitted in the usual manner, so that the rod or stud of the fixing element axially passes through the set 274 of contractable jaws. , and the ejection plunger 248 is pushed inward to compress the spring 260. The sleeve 268 and the jaw assembly 274 cooperate to first grasp and then pull the stud from the fastener when the piston 206 moves toward cylinder wall 212. The reaction to the tensile force applied to the stud of the fastener is exerted through the anvil 290 on the ring or sleeve of the fastener. fixation.
When the stud is broken, the plunger 248 ejects the drop of the stud, and the piston 206 moves the jaw assembly 274 and sleeve 268 to a position where they are ready for a new fitting operation. fixation. A spacer ring 320, placed on the outer end of the sleeve 268, prevents the jaw assembly 274 from being contracted on the plunger 248.
In tool 200, the switch 136 which is actuated by a piston and which is required in tool 150 is omitted, with tool 200 instead using the ball valve 216 mounted in piston 206.
The chamber 80 (Fig. 1) formed in the reservoir 16 between the diaphragm 18 and the bottom wall 56 is full of fluid. A chamber 82, formed between the cover 20 and the upper face of the diaphragm 18, communicates by a horizontal passage 84 formed in the cover 20 with a vertical passage 86 passing through the walls of the cylinder 14 and of the tank see 16 and communicating at its lower end with. the air intake line 38. Accordingly, the diaphragm 18 is subjected to a relatively constant air pressure whereby this diaphragm exerts a predetermined pressure on the fluid contained in the chamber 80, for the hand hold the same at a constant pressure predetermined.
The chamber 80 communicates with the horizontal passage 62 formed in the reservoir 16, by means of two vertical passages 88 and 90 and a horizontal passage 89 formed in the outer part 92 of larger diameter of the lower wall 56 of the tank. The passage 89 is aligned with a larger horizontal recess in the reservoir and in which is disposed a conventional shut-off valve assembly 94. The assembly 94 com takes a valve 98 which is normally hand held against a seat 108 formed in the passage 89.
When the pressure in passage 90 exceeds a predetermined limit, valve 98 moves inwardly to pass fluid from passage 89 to passage 88 and from there to chamber 80. Fluid continues to flow as long as pressure is maintained. reigning in passage 90 has not been reduced to a lower limit.
It can therefore be seen that if the pressure of the fluid of the passage 90, which communicates with the fluid of the chamber 53, exceeds a predetermined value, the assembly 94 with the one-way shut-off valve operates to allow fluid to pass into the chamber 80. which expands to receive this additional fluid and relieves pressure in chamber 53 and the fluid communication passages.
Conversely, in the event of a decrease in the total volume of fluid in chamber 53 and in the fluid communication passages which send the fluid under high pressure to the piston of the tool, the pressure exerted by this fluid on a second assembly 112 with stop valve (fig. 10) mounted on the tank see 16 decreases when the piston 50 is in the posi tion shown in fig. 1.
The fluid pressure of the chamber 80 which is substantially constant acts on a valve 110 of the one-way stop valve assembly 112 to move the valve 110 inward as the pressure decreases in the chamber 53, to cause a flow of fluid, through a vertical passage 111 and a horizontal passage 109 formed in the lower wall 56 of the reservoir, to a vertical passage 113 formed in the fixed piston 54. At its lower end, the passage 113 communicates with the chamber 53.
Chamber 80 and shutoff valve assembly 112 therefore function to continuously supply makeup fluid to chamber 53 to provide therein a makeup volume and minimum pressure to operate the tool. 'sag 150 or 200.
Two similar assemblies 114 and 116 with stop valves (fig. 5 and 9) are mounted in the wall part 92 of the tank and communicate respectively through passages 115 and 117 with the chamber 66 in order to respectively provide pressure relief therein. and an extra volume. Thus, the chamber 80 constitutes a source of fluid for maintaining a constant volume of actuating fluid in the motor assembly 10 and the tool 150 or 200 which is connected thereto. Chamber 80 also serves to receive additional fluid if the pressure in chamber 53 or in chamber 66 becomes excessive.
The shutoff valve assemblies 94 and 114 can be adjusted to determine the pressures at which the valve assemblies will open to cause the desired pressure relief, and the valve assemblies 112 and 116 can be adjusted similarly to determine the limits. lower pressure in chambers 53 and 66.
As the fluid exits the chamber 80, the diaphragm moves towards the bottom wall 56 of the reservoir. The rod 28 and the flange 29 of the ring are moved correspondingly towards the cover 20 until the flange 29 bears against the switch release button 31 and opens the switch 25. It is then necessary to fill with. again the chamber 80 and put the switch 25 back in position by means of the button 35 before being able to operate the motor assembly 10. The above description shows that when the motor assembly 10 is used, the tool for installing fasteners, such as one of the tools illustrated, has a simplified structure without bulky and heavy valve mechanisms.
In addition, assembly 10 provides a continuous flow of high pressure fluid required by the driving tool while minimizing the risk of leakage.
