Cooled torch for arc welding and cutting under shielding gas The basic structure of welding torches for shielding gas welding is mainly determined by the fact that a welding arc between a melting or non-melting electrode and the workpiece should be surrounded by a uniform and vortex-free flow of shielding gas.
A nozzle that surrounds the electrode concentrically and can withstand the thermal stress caused by the nearby arc is therefore necessary for the gas supply. While a nozzle made of ceramic material is sufficient for low currents, at high currents the heat must be transferred to the cooling medium through a highly conductive metal. In addition to the nozzle, the inner power and gas supply parts are also heated by radiation, convection and heat conduction from the arc. They too must be protected by the cooling system in the event of intense arcing.
When welding, it is easy for the nozzle to touch the workpiece. In this case, the welding current must not be conducted to the workpiece via the nozzle.
For the construction of such a welding torch, the requirement arises to isolate the outer nozzle and the central core piece from one another and still grasp both parts well with a simple cooling water supply. Since the nozzle in the vicinity of the arc and the weld pool is exposed to a certain amount of wear, it must also be ensured that it can be changed quickly and easily. For the so-called argon arc welding, nozzles with different diameters are also required in order to achieve economical gas consumption with different currents.
In the previously common burners, the metallic jacket of the cooling chamber is therefore extended to the front and the nozzle is attached to the same by a screw connection or a cone. The main disadvantage of this design is that each detachable connection only brings about metallic contact at individual points and only this small contact surface is used for heat conduction.
As a result of this reduction in the heat flow, additional temperature differences arise at the connection point, which cause constant mutual movement between the nozzle and the jacket and have a negative impact on the metallic contact.
The invention now relates to a cooled torch for arc welding and cutting under protective gas, which has a metal core, which is under tension during welding, with a central bore for receiving the electrode and longitudinal channels for the supply and discharge of the cooling medium and with a gas nozzle is provided, which is separated from the core piece by at least one insulating intermediate piece,
in which all of the above requirements are met and the disadvantages are overcome. The invention consists in the fact that the full-walled gas nozzle comprises part of the core piece, is wetted directly by the cooling medium on the inner surface and is only centered and exchangeably fastened with the aid of the insulating intermediate piece.
Both the attachment of the nozzle and the sealing of the cooling water space against the front burner space are thus sufficient through an extremely simple design of the insulating intermediate piece between the core and the nozzle.
In the drawing, an embodiment of the burner according to the invention is shown in a longitudinal section. Of the . innermost part of the burner is formed by a collet 1 for receiving the elec trode 2 or a power supply tube ge. Your front, conical contact surface 3 is pressed against the core piece during tensioning. The core consists of the nested pipe parts 4 and 5, which: are soldered together in their rear part at 6.
At the rear end, the collet 1 is secured against rotation by the axial groove 9 into which the pin 7 engages.
On the other hand, the collet 1 can be actuated via the thread 10 by a nut 11 inserted into the electrode cap 8. By turning the cap 8, the collet is axially displaced and thus tensioned or released.
In the inner tube 4 of the core, the channels 12 for the supply and removal of the cooling medium, z. B. water, milled. The cooling medium is supplied and discharged via the copper pipes 13a and 13b, which are embedded in the handle 15 and at the same time carry the current.
The protective gas is introduced through the copper tube 14 into the space 16 between the clamping sleeve and the core piece and can escape through the drill hole 17 or through axial slots 18 in the collet 1 into the front burner chamber 19, which is formed by the front end of the gas nozzle 20 .
Between: the core 4, 5 and the gas nozzle 20, an insulating intermediate piece is switched on, which both. the replaceable fastening of the nozzle and the sealing of the cooling water system be ensured. This intermediate piece consists first of all of a cylindrical bushing 21, which on the one hand has radial openings 22 and on the other hand an inner and an outer annular recess 23 or
24 for the circulation of the cooling medium. In front of the sleeve 21 there is a sealing ring 25 made of elastically deformable material, which is supported at the front against a ceramic nut 26 as an axial stop. A further elastic sealing ring 27 is mounted behind the sleeve 21, against which a clamping nut 28 rests. The clamping nut 28 is screwed onto the pipe section 5 of the core and can be moved axially on the same.
The arrangement of the intermediate piece is, as the figure shows, such that by screwing the clamping nut 28 forward, the sleeve 21 and the two sealing rings against the ceramic nut 26 are pressed. In this case, the sealing rings are axially squeezed and thereby pressed radially against the inner wall of the nozzle 20. In this way, the water space is sealed off and the nozzle 20 is held in place at the same time. To replace the gas nozzle, it is therefore sufficient to loosen the clamping nut 28, whereupon the nozzle can be stripped off.
At its front and rear edge, the sleeve 21 rests against the gas nozzle 20, whereby it is centered. In the middle of its recesses 22, 23, 24, the sleeve 21 simultaneously provides the circulation of the cooling medium and, above all, its access to the gas nozzle 20, the inner wall of which is cooled directly, and to the outer wall of the core piece 5 executed stronger than the annular space 23 so that the main mass of the cooling medium of the gas nozzle 20 is supplied.
The construction described is not only extremely simple and limited to the essentials, it also allows a significantly higher current-carrying capacity compared to the previously usual types of burner with the same external dimensions. This is due to the fact that a very high water velocity prevails through suitable training of the intermediate piece on the inner surface of the nozzle and the strong heat dissipation also takes effect immediately.
In inert gas welding with a melting electrode, the welding spatter cannot burn due to the intensive cooling of the nozzle and is therefore always easy to remove. The nozzle itself is extremely simple, cheap and easy to replace in its embodiment. It can therefore always be kept in good condition with little effort. The cleanliness of the nozzle has a direct effect on the economy of the welding process via the gas consumption.
