and machine for the implementation of this method
The present invention relates to a process for manufacturing a zipper element from a thermoplastic synthetic resin yarn, for example polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene, etc.
The method according to the invention is characterized in that a thermoplastic resin wire is continuously advanced which is wound around a mandrel while heating it so as to continuously form a helix having a determined pitch. , the forward movement of a section of said propeller is then stopped, a punching action is applied to said propeller section while it is kept stopped, then the section which has been subjected to the punching action.
The subject of the invention is also a machine for implementing this method, characterized in that it comprises a fixed mandrel, a helical head having a rotating die arranged so as to continuously form a helix from a thermoplastic resin wire wound around said mandrel, a heater for heating said die, a second heater and a cooling device disposed consecutively along said mandrel behind said rotating die, punching dies arranged in the vicinity of said cooling device transversely with respect to said mandrel, a feed device located opposite said mandrel so as to engage with the helix wound on the mandrel,
and a mechanism arranged to synchronously drive said helix head, said punching dies and said feed device.
The appended drawings show, by way of example, an embodiment of the machine according to the invention.

Fig. 7 is a sectional view showing a gear mechanism serving to synchronously drive the helix head shown particularly in FIG. 2, the punching head shown particularly in FIG. 4 and a feed device shown in FIG. 1.
Fig. 8 is a diagram showing the arrangement of the gears shown in FIG. 7.
Referring to the drawing, we see a mandrel 1 on which must be wound a wire 6 of thermoplastic resin. The mandrel 1 is held between a support 2 mounted vertically on a fixed part A of the machine frame and a block 32 connecting a pair of vertical support members 30 attached to said frame part A. A pillar 12 is fixed to the frame. frame part A
on the side opposite said support 2 and coaxially with
said mandrel 1. A rotating disc 11 is mounted rota
tively on said pillar 12 by means of bearings 13
arranged between said pillar and said disc. The disc
1 1 is driven by a toothed wheel 14 from a
drive device such as, for example, an electric motor (not shown).
A supply reel 5 and rotatably mounted on a vertical shaft 7 fixed to the disc 1 1 near its edge. The vertical shaft 7 is fixed to its
upper end to one end of an arm 10 by a nut screwed onto said end. A compression spring 9 surrounds the upper end of the shaft 7 between the upper cheek of the coil 5 and the arm 10.
A helix-shaped die 3 is fixed to the other end of said arm 10, and has a central hole 40 through which the mandrel 1 passes, so that, when the disc 11 is driven by the toothed wheel 14, the die 3 can rotate according to the movement of revolution of the shaft 7. The die 3 having the hole 40 is formed of two halves touching each other in a plane passing through the axis of said hole, said halves having recesses which define hole 40 and being interconnected by a bolt 60.
The rotary disk 11 and the rotary means comprising the shaft 7 and the die 3 constitute a helical head. Said head is also provided with a device for tensioning the thread. An arm 8 is fixed by one end to the lower end of the shaft 7 and supports a vertical pillar 33 fixed to the other end of the arm 8. A slider 34 is mounted on said pillar 33 and tends to return to a position. neutral under the action of springs 28 and 35 surrounding said pillar on either side of slider 34. The upper spring 28 is held in position by a collar 36 fixed to the upper end of the pillar 33. The slider 34 is provided with a hook 37 which is intended to engage with the resin thread 6 on the side opposite to the spool 5. Said collar 36 is provided with a guide roller 38 on the same side of the pillar as said hook.
The resin thread 6 is led to the die 3 by means of the hook 37 and the roller 38 from the spool 5 and is wound around the mandrel 1 during the rotation of the helical head.
The compression spring 9 acting between the arm 10 and the cheek of the spool 5 tends to keep the tension of the thread 6 uniform as the thread is pulled continuously from the spool 5. In addition, the slider 34 and the springs 28 and 35 serve to absorb any vibration of the yarn due to the rapid rotation, to keep the yarn tension uniform.
As described above, the form-helix or rotary die 3 is fixed to the outer end of the arm 10 and is provided with the hole 40 through which the mandrel 1 passes centrally, as clearly shown in FIG. 3. A helical groove 4 is formed in the inner peripheral wall of said die hole 40. This groove 4 is formed continuously from a point near the lower end and
extends to the upper end of hole 40.
The lower end or initial part of the groove 4 communicates with the outside of the lower surface of the die 3 by an inclined bore 41.
Before the start of the helix forming operation, the two halves of the die 3 are separated from each other by removing the fixing bolt 60, the end of the wire 6 is introduced by hand into the bore 41, the part of the wire 6 which protrudes out of the bore 41 is wound on the mandrel 1, until it reaches a feed device 42 described later, then the two halves of the die 3 are again joined by bolt 60.
In the state described above, when the disc 11 rotates and the helix-shaped head performs a movement of revolution, the wire 6 is continuously formed into a helix in the helical passage formed between said groove 4 and the peripheral surface of the mandrel 1, and advances in the direction of the outlet opening of the die 3. When this rotation continues, the helix exits through the outlet opening of the die 3, sliding along the peripheral surface of the mandrel 1. Thus is formed a continuous helix S of thermoplastic resin.
During the process described above, to facilitate the formation of the helix, the thermoplastic resin wire 6 is heated while it is inside the die 3. This heating can be carried out by blowing gas. hot air on the die 3. In the present machine, to make the heating efficient, the upper end surface of the die 3 has an annular groove 42 surrounding the die hole 40. A nozzle 15 is disposed opposite the groove 42, so that hot air can be blown over the rotary groove 42 and the die 3 is sufficiently heated. The nozzle 15 is fixed to a part integral with the support members 30 and is connected to a suitable source, not shown, of hot air.
The propeller formed by the rotating die passes through a heater 16 mounted on the support members 30, is heated therein, so that internal stresses are removed, and then it is fixed into a properly shaped propeller by cold air. blown by a cooling device 17 mounted on one of the support members 30. The device 17 is provided with a nozzle and is connected to a suitable source of a cooling agent by a pipe 17a. Cold air is thus blown onto the propeller S through the aforementioned nozzle.
Once said tensions have been removed and the propeller has been cooled and fixed in its correct shape, the propeller is driven into a punching head provided with dies 18 and 19. In this head, the propeller is formed S engagement or coupling parts intended to allow the operation of the closure, on one side of the propeller. A feed device 24 is mounted on the support members 30 so as to introduce a part of the helix into said punching head. The feed device 24 causes a periodic movement in synchronism with the opening of the dies 18 and 19 so as to bring a defined axial length of the helix between the dies 18 and 19 and to stop this length in this position during the next punching operation.
This feed device and its drive mechanism will be described later.
As shown in fig. 4, the punch head comprises the dies 18 and 19 slidably mounted on a base plate 43, so that it can approach each other from opposite sides of the mandrel 1 and then separate from one of them. the other to return to their original position. Said base plate 43 can advantageously be fixed to a fixed part of the machine or can be fixed to the support members 30 by suitable means. A rod 22 animated by a reciprocating movement is arranged above the base plate 43 and is mounted in a bearing 44 fixed to said plate. The rod 22 is articulated at its end with one end of a lever 31 which can in turn pivot on the base plate 43 by means of a journal 45.
A stopper 46 is adjustably attached to the other end of the lever 31, and another stopper 47 is attached to the inner wall of the elbow portion 48 of the rod 22 in alignment with the aforementioned first stopper 46.
Between these stops 46 and 47, the two punching dies 18 and 19 are slidably mounted on the base plate 43. These dies 18 and 19 have studs 49 and 50 with which the ends of the springs 51 and 52 respectively engage. in opposite directions to separate the studs from each other, the other ends of these springs being fixed to the base plate 43. Therefore, the punching dies 18 and 19 normally leave between their opposite ends a space allowing free passage. the propeller formed by the closure element. Fig. 4 shows the rod 22 pushed to the right and the two dies 18 and 19 closed to press the propeller onto the mandrel 1 from both sides.
The operation described above of the dies 18 and 19 is controlled by a cam 21 carried by the upper end of a vertical shaft 20 rotatably mounted on the frame of the machine by suitable means not shown (FIG. 1). Referring to fig. 4, it can be seen that the cam 21 has on a part of its periphery a lobe 52 engaged with a roller 23 rotatably mounted on the outer end of the rod 22.
With the arrangement which has just been described, when the cam 21 rotates, the rod 22 performs a reciprocating movement. In other words, when the roller 23 is in contact with the circular part of the cam, it is held in its left position by the springs 51 and 52. When the lobe 52 of the cam 21 acts on the roller 23, the rod 22 is moved to the right, the stopper 47 pushes the punching die 18 to the right, the lever 31 moves clockwise and the stopper 46 is therefore moved to the left to push the punching die 19 to the left . As a result, the two dies 18 and 19 are pressed against the mandrel 1 and press specific parts of the turns of the helix around the mandrel. This pressure of the dies 18 and 19 has the effect of forming engagement portions on one side of the propeller.
As the cam 21 continues to rotate until the lobe 52 passes the roller 23, the die 18 is pulled back to the left by the spring 52 and the die 19 is pulled back to the right by the spring 51. As a result of these backward movements, the rod 22 moves to the left when the roller 23 arrives on the circular part of the cam 21.
During the periodic feeding movement produced by the device 24, the dies 18 and 19 successively form the engagement parts on the propeller. A heater is disposed in the die 18 so that the helix S can be heated upon contact with the die 18, so as to be softened to a sufficient degree to allow said forming. An electric heater or a steam or hot air device can be used for this heating.
During the aforementioned operation of the punching dies 18 and 19, the power produced by the device 24 is suspended. However, when the roller 23 again touches the circular periphery of the cam 21, the device 24 resumes operation.
Under the action of the device 24, another part of the helix S is introduced into the punching head.
Thus, the punching produced by said head and the feeding are repeated alternately with a fixed period.
Once the engagement portions are formed by the punching dies as described above, the propeller S passes a cooling device 27 mounted on one of the support members 30, the propeller thus being cooled and therefore fixed. in the given form. This cooling device is provided at its outer end with a pipe 56 supplying cold air and a nozzle for blowing cold air in the direction of the propeller.
In the machine shown in fig. 1, the feed device 24 is disposed between the support members 30 and comprises a rotary shaft 57 disposed perpendicular to the mandrel 1 and rotating in bearings mounted on the support members 30. A chain sprocket 25 is attached to the outer end of shaft 57 and is driven by a chain driven by a suitable drive device, not shown, via a reduction mechanism also not shown. This drive device can be constituted by the electric motor serving to drive the disc 11. The feed device 24 is constituted by a straight toothed wheel provided at its outer periphery with a toothing having the same pitch as that of the propeller S.
The toothing of this wheel 24 is intended to mesh with the turns of the propeller S so as to cause the propeller to advance upwards during the rotation of this wheel 24. This toothed wheel 24 must only turn when the punching dies 18 and 19 are open and must be stopped when the dies are closed.
The propeller S is finally pushed out of the machine by a guide pipe 26 supported by the members 30.
The drive mechanism serving to synchronize the operation of the dies of the punching head with that of the feed device will now be explained with reference to FIGS. 7 and 8.
A toothed wheel 61 is engaged with the disc 11 rotating the helical head. The rotation of the wheel 61 is transmitted to a toothed wheel 64 by pinions 62 and 63, and the shaft 20 of the wheel 64 rotates at a speed determined with respect to the speed of rotation of the helical head. As the shaft 20 rotates, the punch dies 18 and 19 operate and a number of turns of the helix are subjected to the action of the punch dies during a stroke of the dies.
The toothed wheel 64 further drives a pinion 65. A stop wheel 66 rotating with the pinion 65 is fixed coaxially with the pinion 65 and engages with a Maltese cross 70. The stop wheel 66 is provided with a guide disc 68 in contact with the outer peripheral surface of the Maltese cross 70. A notch 69 is formed in the disc 68.
The wheel 66 is provided near its edge with a pin 67. When said wheel 66 rotates, the pin 67 successively enters each of the four notches 73 of the Maltese cross 70 and gives an intermittent movement to the latter. On the shaft of the Maltese cross 70 is fixed a worm 78 which meshes with a worm wheel 72 mounted on a shaft 79 carrying a chain sprocket 71.
Thus, the rotation of the disc 1 1 causes the pinion 71 to rotate intermittently via the aforementioned gear train. As pinion 71 and shaft 20 are both included in the aforementioned gear train, they always act in synchronism with each other.
Chain sprockets 71 and 25 (fig. 1) are connected with each other by an endless chain and are driven intermittently so that the movement of toothed wheel 24 coincides with that of chain sprocket 71.
