Process for the manufacture of molded articles
The present invention relates to a method of making molded articles from sheets of thermoplastic resins composed primarily of solid, highly crystalline polypropylene.
It is known that articles made from other thermoplastic resins can be obtained by molding under vacuum; H. by heating flat resin sheets in a mold to their softening point and applying a vacuum between the sheet and the mold, thereby pressing the softened sheet against the surface of the mold.
It has now been found that in the case of the new propylene polymers, the vacuum deformation of the plates cannot simply be carried out by the method described above, since corrugations are formed in the mold when the polymer plates are heated to the softening point of the resin, which is due to the resulting uneven spacing of the Resin surface from the heat source leads to non-homogeneous heating of the material.
During the subsequent deformation operation, this causes an uneven expansion of the plate, which allows perforations at the points with the highest temperature.
It has now surprisingly been found that if a polypropylene plate is subjected to a treatment at a temperature of approximately 130 to 1400 ° C. for a short time before it is fixed in the frame, the occurrence of such corrugations is avoided and the plate without the aforementioned inconveniences can be deformed.
The present invention therefore relates to a process for the production of molded articles from sheets of thermoplastic resins, which consist predominantly of solid, highly crystalline polypropylene, which consists in that the resin sheet is first preheated to a temperature below its softening point for 2-3 minutes, after which the sheet is in brought the mold, heated to the softening point of the resin, and then a vacuum is applied between the plate and the mold, whereby the softened plate is pressed against the mold surface.
The above-mentioned preheating is best carried out at a temperature of about 130 to 1400 ° C.
The articles obtained from other thermoplastic resins by molding under vacuum have one or more of the following properties: high mechanical strength, unbreakability, resistance to heat, transparency, the possibility of being colored with light or transparent colors, chemical invulnerability, good dielectric properties, Odorless and non-toxic.
The solid propyte polymers, however, have all these properties at the same time, and the articles obtained by vacuum forming sheets of such polymers also have a remarkable gloss. This extraordinary combination of properties makes new uses of the resins possible, which could not be carried out before, and at the same time leads to a considerable saving of material in the thickness of the panels, since the greater mechanical strength makes it possible to equal or better compare with other thermoplastic resins Get results even when the thickness is reduced.
Solid propylene polymers can have a molecular weight of up to 800,000 or even higher; however, for the process of the present invention it is preferred (although this is not a fixed limit) to use polymers having a molecular weight of 50,000 to 250,000 and a degree of crystallinity of 60 to 80 0h. The articles produced by the process according to the invention have the following average properties.
Tensile yield strength 400 kg / cm2
Elongation at yield point 100-600 in
Brinell hardness (with a ball of
12.7 mm diameter, 1 minute long, load 31.75 kg) 1500-2000
Softening point (Vicat,
Load 5 kg) 100-110 "C
The polymers can contain dyes, pigments and fillers which do not change the softening point. However, it is possible that some fillers have an influence in this regard, and in such cases it is of course advisable to check their behavior first.
The following example is intended to explain the present invention without, however, being restricted thereto.
example
In a molding machine provided with the shape of the inner wall of a refrigerator door, a plate made of polypropylene having a molecular weight of 100,000 and a thickness of 2 mm is inserted.
The plate is preheated to a temperature of 130-140 "C for 2-3 minutes without being fixed (in the loose state).
The plate is then heated to its softening point with the aid of an infrared light source.
A vacuum pump is then put into operation to generate a vacuum between the plate and the mold, the plate being immediately pressed against the mold and assuming its shape.
