Process for deep drawing sheets
The present invention relates to a process for deep-drawing sheets of thermoplastic resins, which optionally contain one or more dyes, pigments or fillers which do not affect the softening point of the resin, by deformation by means of vacuum.
It is known to deform sheets of thermoplastic resins by means of vacuum, i. H. by heating the flat resin plates in a mold to their softening point and creating a vacuum between the plate and the mold, thereby pressing the softened plate against the surface of the mold.
It has now been found that in the case of propylene polymers, the vacuum deformation of the films cannot simply be carried out by the method described above, since corrugations are formed in the mold by heating the polymer sheets to the softening point of the resin, resulting in inhomogeneous heating of the material (due to the resulting non-uniform distance between the resin surface and the heat source). During the subsequent deformation operation, this causes an uneven expansion of the sheet, which allows perforations at the points with the highest temperature.
The present invention therefore relates to a method for deep-drawing sheets of thermoplastic resins, which optionally contain one or more dyes, pigments or fillers that do not affect the softening point of the resin, by deformation by means of vacuum, which consists in the sheet, which is predominantly consists of solid, highly crystalline polypropylene, first preheated for about 2 - 3 minutes to a temperature below its softening point and then clamped in the frame of the vacuum forming machine above the mold, whereupon it is brought to the softening point of the resin and then the vacuum between the plate and the mold is created so that the softened plate is pressed onto the mold and takes its shape.
The above-mentioned preheating is preferably carried out at a temperature of about 130-1400 ° C.
The articles obtained from known thermoplastic resins by vacuum molding have one or more of the following properties: high mechanical strength, unbreakability, resistance to heat, transparency, the possibility of being colored with light or transparent colors, chemical invulnerability, good dielectric properties, odorlessness and non-toxicity.
The solid propylene polymers have all these properties at the same time, and the articles obtained by vacuum forming sheets of such polymers also have a remarkable gloss. This extraordinary combination of properties makes new uses of this resin possible, which could not be carried out before, and at the same time a considerable saving of material in the thickness of the panels, since the greater mechanical strength of the propylene polymers makes it possible, in comparison with other thermoplastic resins, to be identical or better Get results even when the wall thickness is reduced.

Solid propylene polymers can have a molecular weight up to 800,000 or higher, but for the process of the present invention it is preferred (although this is not a fixed limit) polymers with a molecular weight of 50,000 to 250,000 and a crystallinity content of 60 to 80% to use.
The articles produced by the process according to the invention have the following average properties:

<tb> tensile strength <SEP> 400 <SEP> kg / cm2
<tb> Elongation at break <SEP> 100-600 <SEP>% <SEP>

The polymers can contain dyes, pigments and fillers, which increase the softening point

in such cases it is of course advisable to first check their behavior.
The following example is intended to explain the present invention without, however, being restricted thereto.
Example: In a molding machine, which is provided with the shape of the inner wall of a refrigerator door, a polypropylene plate with a molecular weight of 100,000 and a thickness of
2 mm inserted.
The plate is preheated to a temperature of 130 to 1400 C for 2 - 3 minutes without being fixed (in the loose state).
The plate is then heated to its softening point with the aid of an infrared light source.
A vacuum is then created between the plate and the mold, so that the plate is pressed against the mold and takes on its shape.
