B. in Druckfarben.
Durch Trocken- oder Wasserdampfdes.tillation konnte ein Produkt hergestellt werden, welches 30,5 % Zr ent- hielt und einer Mischung von 609/o Dimer und 40% Monomer entsprach;
Fig.3 und 4 zeigen wieder für ASTM-Leinöl das Verhalten der Trocknergemische in Gegenwart eines Hilfstrockners. Die Ausgangsgemische enthiel- ten 0,05 9/o Co bzw. 0,10/a Mn und 0,5 %- Pb;

Use of zirconyl salts of organic acids in siccatives Many attempts have already been made to replace the manganese and cobalt compounds used as primary siccatives with corresponding compounds of other metals. The reasons for this are economic and technical. Both manganese and cobalt are difficult to obtain in the necessary quantities, and the compounds of the two metals are colored, which makes it impossible for many applications to use as much siccative as in the interests of rapid drying would be desirable. In the case of light-tinted oven paints, there is the further disadvantage that uneven tones are achieved when heated.
When enamelling automobile bodies with light-colored paints as standard, it is z. B. can hardly be avoided that the fenders take on a slightly deeper tint than the other parts.
Tests have shown that it is possible to replace the compounds of rare earth metals or the cobalt and manganese compounds in siccatives, if not completely, at least largely by zirconyl salts of organic acids, in such a way that the weight ratio of Zr to rare earth metals or Co is at most 3: 2 or from Zr to Mn at most 4: 1. The use of zirconyl salts of organic acids is possible in all types of drying oils and varnishes, e.g. B. in air-drying paints, oven paints and also z. B. in printing inks.
This use not only results in a considerable saving of manganese and cobalt, but also brings considerable positive advantages, of which at this point only the increased Sward hardness and better adhesion of the coatings, the reduced staining, uniform coloration of light paints and the greater wet strength should be mentioned.
Zirconyl salt can completely replace the lead salt, which is often used as a secondary siccative or auxiliary drying agent, whereby the same acceleration of drying is achieved with a simultaneous significant improvement in the hardness properties and wet strength of the coatings.
The amount of zirconium necessary for this purpose is about% o to ½ of the amount of lead normally used and depends to a certain extent on the drying agent used and the mechanical and physical requirements placed on the coating . Another advantage of the zirconium dryer is that the coating is not discolored by sulfur-containing vapors and has no toxic properties.
In summary it can be said that zirconyl salt is not a good desiccant on its own, but that it increases the drying effect of cobalt and manganese salts extraordinarily without reducing the drying times of desiccants, which are only cobalt and / or manganese salts as siccatives or containing mixtures of these with lead salts.
Particularly suitable zirconyl compounds of organic acids are the zirconyl salts of aliphatic carboxylic acids which have 8 carbon atoms. These salts are made by double conversion of water-soluble zirconium salts, for. B.
Zirconium oxychloride (zirconyl chloride) or zirconium sodium sulfate, obtained with the alkali salt of the acid in question or by melting a water-insoluble zirconium carbonate with the acid itself.
The zirconyl salt of 2-ethylhexanecarboxylic acid, which has proven to be particularly suitable, can be prepared as follows: 154 g (0.4 mol) of sodium zirconyl sulfate of the formula O = Zr (SO4Na) 2 - H20 are dissolved in 500 cm3 of cold water . A neutral solution of 116 g (0.8 mol) of 2-ethyl hexanearboxylic acid and 32 g of caustic soda in 200 cm3 of water is added to the clear solution.
The resulting precipitate is filtered off, washed ge with cold water and dissolved in petroleum ether. The solution is freed from the last traces of water by drying with anhydrous sodium sulfate and filtered, and the petroleum ether is then distilled off under reduced pressure.
The reaction product obtained contains 22.6 9/0 Zr. If it is digested with cold methyl alcohol and dried, the Zr content increases to 26.45% and the methanol extract contains 2-ethylhexanecarboxylic acid. From the zirconium analysis and the 2-ethyl-hexanecarboxylic acid content of the purified. In connection with this, the conclusion can be drawn that the product obtained is a mixture of the compounds of formulas 1 and 2.
EMI0002.0020
Since the mixture of these compounds is completely soluble in petroleum ether, it cannot contain zirconium oxide or zirconium oxide hydrate.
Although it was not possible to separate the two components from one another, it was possible to increase the content of compound (2), that is to say the Zr content, significantly without reducing the solubility of the compound in aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons .
A product could be produced by dry or steam distillation which contained 30.5% Zr and corresponded to a mixture of 60% dimer and 40% monomer;
this product was completely soluble in hydrocarbons. If the zirconium content was increased above 35.5 9 / o, the complete solubility in organic solvents was lost and the products became unusable as desiccants.
The presence of free acid, on the other hand, is harmless and only has the disadvantage of reducing the zirconium content of the compounds.
The zirconyl caprylate is prepared in the same way as is described for the salt of 2-ethylhexanecarboxylic acid.
The first thing to do is to describe the use of the new zirconium-containing siccatives for air-drying paints, varnishes, enamels, linoleum printing inks, etc., which contain the fatty acid radical of a drying or semi-drying oil as a component.
The film-forming base of such lacquers generally contains 0.01-10 / 0, preferably 0.025-0.1% drier, calculated as the ratio of the metal weight of the siccative to the weight of the polymerizable dry oil content of the lacquer base.
The composition of such film formers is known. They can contain the usual fillers, extenders and pigments. In general, drying or semi-drying oils such as linseed oil, dehydrated castor oil and the like, fatty acid esters of drying or semi-drying oils with polybasic alcohols, resins, especially alkyd and phenolic resins, which are modified with drying or semi-drying oils, modified resin esters are used for their production as well as natural resins.
In the figures of the drawings, the results obtained with salts of 2-ethyl = hexanecarboxylic acid are shown. Tests with conventional naphthenate and linoleate dryers give curves of the same character. The percentages in the figures relate to the metal content.
The behavior of cobalt-zirconium and manganese-zirconium dryers is shown in FIGS. 1 and 2. The curves represent drying isotherms, the drying times being plotted as a function of the metal concentration in the ASTM linseed oil used. The drying times were determined according to the ASTM regulation for testing the oils D 555-47 (1949).
The solid curves represent the drying isotherms of the Co-Zr salt and Mn-Zr salt mixtures, the total metal content being kept constant, but the ratio of the two metals being varied.
The dashed curves represent the drying isotherms of Mn and Co salts alone, the metal content being reduced in the same proportion as in the mixtures with Zr. It can be seen that a manganese substitute up to a ratio of about 609 / o Zr and 409 / a Mn in linseed oil leaves the drying times practically unchanged,
and that with a ratio of 809 / o Zr to 209 / o Mn the increase in drying time is just slightly above the experimental error limit.
With cobalt substitutes, the drying times remain constant up to a ratio of about 509 / o Co to 509 / o Zr, increase somewhat at a ratio of 60% Zr to 409 / o Co, but increase rapidly above this ratio.
3 and 4 again show the behavior of the dryer mixtures in the presence of an auxiliary dryer for ASTM linseed oil. The starting mixtures contained 0.05% Co or 0.10% Mn and 0.5% Pb;
the lead content was kept constant and the primary dryer content slowly decreased in the same proportion as the zircon addition was increased, the total metal content remaining the same in all cases. The shape of the curves is essentially the same as in FIGS. 1 and 2, and the slight differences can be attributed to the somewhat different metal composition.
The curves in FIGS. 5 and 6 show, in a white enamel paint with gradual replacement of cobalt and manganese by zirconium, the times that are necessary to dry the film to such an extent that it is general in the United States standard test methods used no longer retain dust or lose its stickiness. In the following tables, these drying times are referred to as the STD dust drying time and the KTD adhesive drying time.
<I> Example 1 </I> A white enamel paint made from an oil-modified alkyd resin (45% oil and 35% phthalic anhydride) which contained 3011 / o titanium oxide was used for the series of tests below.
The oil films were applied to glass plates in a thickness of 3 ct using a Bird apparatus, which were placed in a drying cabinet in which a temperature of 25 C and a relative humidity of 65-14 were maintained under slow air circulation.

<tb> after <SEP> 144 <SEP> hours <SEP> 14 <SEP> 20 <SEP> 20 <SEP> 20 <SEP> 18 <SEP> 20 <SEP> 22 <SEP> 22 Another completely surprising advantage of the The addition of zirconium dryers is their beneficial influence on the aging of drying oils and varnishes. Such oils and lacquers containing the usual desiccants suffer, especially in the presence of certain pigments, a considerable loss of drying capacity during storage, apparently due to the gradual absorption of the desiccant by the pigment. Attempts to prevent or reduce this desiccant absorption have so far had little success.
The absorption largely depends on the nature of the pigments, of which soot, iron oxide, titanium dioxide, iron blue and the like are characterized by their particularly high absorption capacity. The absorption is sometimes so great that the paints or varnishes in question completely lose their drying capacity over time.
It has been shown that the use of dryer combinations that contain zirconyl salts not only prevents the loss of drying capacity during aging, but that in some cases the drying times can even be shortened somewhat. This is of great practical importance because it gives the paint specialist for the first time the opportunity to increase the service life of paints and varnishes that have been prepared with the pigments in question by adding zirconium to the dryer system.
<I> Example 4 </I> In the enamel of Example 1, the adhesive drying time was determined immediately after preparation and after storage for 15 months. The results are shown in the following table.

<tb> 4 <SEP> 0.5 <SEP> 0.02 <SEP> 0.01 <SEP> 0.02 <SEP> 420 <SEP> 390 The zirconium compounds exert their beneficial influence not only in air-drying, but also in heat-drying paints.
Such paints have a film-forming base which generally belongs to one of the following classes: 1. Alkyd resins of small, medium and large oil lengths based on phthalates, maleates, rosin acid esters and the like, which are mixed with polybasic alcohols such as glycerine, Pentaerythritol, glycols made and unsaturated oils such as linseed oil, saja oil,
dehydrated castor oil., or synthetic, drying oils are modified. 2. Phenol and oil-modified alkyd resins, 3. Urea formaldehyde, melamine formaldehyde and similar aminoplasts with oil-modified alkyd resins, 4. Epoxy resins and their esters with unsaturated fatty acids, 5. Styrenated alkyd resins, 6. Mixtures of the foregoing, together with stand oils.
Some of these coatings, especially those made on the basis of phenol-modified alkyd resins, have a tendency to discolour strongly during oven drying under the influence of conventional metal dryers.
This discoloration is particularly troublesome when enamelling large objects in the oven, e.g. B. of light-tinted automobile bodies. So far it has been practically impossible to paint an entire car body in a single operation in a uniform shade, because the parts closer to the heat source, e.g. B. the fenders, a deeper coloration assumed than the more distant parts when light-tinted coatings should be applied. The incorporation of a zirconium dryer in the lacquer has the surprising effect that completely uniformly tinted coatings are achieved.
Another unforeseen advantage of a zirconium content in oven paints is the increased hardness of the coatings obtained with it. While zirconyl salt alone has no effect on the hardness of oven paints, its effects are remarkable when used together with cobalt, manganese salts or rare earth compounds. The effect of the zirconium additive is not only limited to improving the hardness properties of the coatings, but also reduces their brittleness and increases their abrasion resistance and weather resistance.
Similar advantages are achieved when using organic zirconyl salts in printing inks which are dried by brief heating. Such printing inks generally consist of mixtures of stand oils with resins (e.g. maleic or phenolic resins) and pigments and require relatively high additions of drying agents, mostly cobalt, in order to be able to dry quickly.
Here, too, some of the cobalt salt can be replaced by a zirconyl salt, as a result of which the prints obtained show better abrasion resistance and more uniform coloring than prints made with printing inks containing only cobalt salts.
<I> Example 5 </I> A white enamel made from oil-modified alkyd resin was produced from 757 parts of D.uraplex C-49 (registered trademark) (Resinous Products & Chemical Co), 409 parts of titanium dioxide and 302 parts of VMP naphtha.
