On utilise l'appareil suivant la fig. 2.
Method for working by melting a part by means of an electric arc and apparatus for its implementation The present additional patent relates to a method for working by melting a part by means of an electric arc and an apparatus for its implementation. opens. The method according to the main patent is characterized in that an arc is passed, formed between a non-consumable electrode arranged axially in a nozzle and a member constituting a second electrode, with a gas stream through a passage of said nozzle arranged so as to produce a narrowing of said arc, so that the voltage per unit length of the arc thus narrowed is greater than that of an un-narrowed arc carrying the same quantity of current,
produced outside a nozzle, the passage section of which is equal to the section of said passage, and protected by a stream of gas of the same composition and flowing through this nozzle at the same speed, and in that 'the jet formed by the arc and the gas is directed against the part as it leaves said passage.
The apparatus for carrying out this method defined in the main patent is characterized in that it comprises an arc torch containing a non-consumable rod-shaped electrode arranged axially in a nozzle having a wise pitch arranged in such a way. in conducting a current of gas and in producing a narrowing of an arc formed through this passage between this non-consumable electrode and a member constituting a second electrode,
the smallest cross-sectional area of said passage being less than the cross-sectional area of a similar, but not narrowed arc, measured at the same distance from the end of the non-consumable electrode. This method and apparatus has been improved according to the present patent by advancing a consumable electrode wire in a portion of the arc located within the nozzle. This process makes it possible to obtain a jet of pulverized molten metal.
The process according to the present patent is characterized by the fact that a consumable electrode wire, electrically connected to said second electrode, is introduced and advanced laterally through the wall of the nozzle in a part of the arc situated at the end. inside the nozzle, the passage of which has a narrowed part, the arc being directed towards the workpiece so as to deposit the sprayed molten metal jet thus formed on said workpiece.
The apparatus according to the invention for carrying out this method, in which the end of said non-consumable electrode is situated in the vicinity of the inlet of said constricted part of the passage of the nozzle, said apparatus comprising a current source connected on the one hand to the non-consumable electrode and on the other hand either to the nozzle and to a consumable wire electrode, or both to the nozzle, to the consumable wire electrode and to the workpiece , and means for advancing the consumable wire electrode in the arc,
is characterized by the fact that the nozzle comprises a side passage through which the consumable wire electrode enters said part of the arc situated in the nozzle.
The accompanying drawing illustrates, by way of example, implementations of the process according to the invention.
Fig. 1 is a partial view, in vertical section, of an embodiment of the apparatus according to the invention, and FIGS. 2, 3 and 4 are similar views of variants of this embodiment.
In fig. 1, the apparatus A comprises a rod 10 serving as a negative electrode disposed coaxially with a nozzle 11 serving as a positive electrode. These electrodes are connected to an electric current source 12 by lines 13 and 14, respectively. A stream of gas flows from top to bottom through the annular space between rod 10 and bore 15 of nozzle 11. This gas can be any suitable arc shielding gas, such as than argon, helium, nitrogen or hydrogen.
It is advantageous to have a little hydrogen in the gas mixture when this hydrogen is acceptable from a metallurgical point of view, to increase the rate of melting of the wire, under the effect of the increase in heat due to the formation of atomic hydrogen in the arc, and its subsequent recombination on or near the pulverized material.
A consumable wire 16 is advanced, by means of rollers 17, through a lateral passage P formed in the wall of the nozzle 11, into a narrow passage of this nozzle. The wire 16 is shown entering the nozzle at an acute angle to the horizontal. The level in the vertical direction, at which the wire enters the nozzle, is chosen at a point giving maximum satisfaction for given dimensions and configuration of the nozzle.
The wire is thus placed as close as possible to the point of maximum constriction or constriction of: the arc and of maximum concentration of the kinetic energy. The wire 16 is in electrical contact with the nozzle 11 and can thus serve as an electrode when it enters the narrow passage. The arc 19, which initially passes between the electrodes 10 and 11, then tends to go in part on the wire 16.
The molten metal from the wire 16 is then projected in the form of a high speed jet 20, with the gas stream. The nozzle 11 is cooled below its melting point by passing a cooling fluid, such as water, from an inlet port 21, through a passage 22, to an outlet port 23 A suitable receiving screen or support R is disposed below the apparatus A in the area into which the jet 20 containing the atomized metal is discharged.
The speed of advance of the wire 16 is adjusted in combination with the electrical energy to keep the molten point of the wire substantially on the axis of the passage formed in the nozzle. This results in placing the jet of metal substantially in alignment with the longitudinal axis of this passage. Too slow a forward speed results in a jet of large particles at a certain angle with respect to the axis, this jet being offset to the right with respect to this axis.
If the forward speed is increased beyond the optimum conditions, the same spraying is obtained as with a too low forward speed except that the jet is offset to the other side of the axis. . These two conditions are obviously undesirable. Ideal consumable wire feed rates are 635 cm per minute for steel, 355 cm per minute for an alloy of 80% nickel and 20% copper, and 762 cm per minute for steel. aluminum, such speeds having been used successfully with a wire having a diameter of 1.6 mm, and with a total power, in direct current, of 10 KW, with a rod 10 of negative polarity.
The apparatus used, under the above conditions, had a nozzle section at the point of the constriction, with a diameter of 3.2 mm and an angle of the diverging part equal to 30.
In the embodiment of FIG. 1, the nozzle and the consumable wire are at the same electric potential. This assembly makes it possible to obtain effective self-regulation, in conjunction with the advancement of the wire, which tends to maintain the molten point of the wire substantially on the axis of the passage of the nozzle. As the wire enters the longitudinal passage of the nozzle, it begins to carry increasing amounts of current. If it extends beyond the axis of the passage, the increased current, the greater the heating due to resistance along the protruding portion of the wire, the greater the exposure to the gas stream d High kinetic energy, increases the melting rate, and the wire melts faster until its tip has returned to the axial position.
If the advancement speed of the wire is slowed down, and if its projection in the nozzle decreases, it absorbs less current and the nozzle absorbs more. The overall effect is to reduce the rate of fusion.
The part of the longitudinal passage of the nozzle which extends beyond the wire serves to focus and adjust the position of the jet of molten droplets. The outlet diverter serves to reduce unwanted obstructions which are caused by the deposition of molten metal particles in the nozzle. This divergent also spreads the surface of the electrode and decreases the current density helping to reduce erosion at high current levels. A divergent in the nozzle still allows it to be achieved under certain conditions. supersonic gas exit velocities which further accelerate the molten material in the jet producing a stronger impact on the workpieces and denser coatings or welds.
For the above reasons, it is therefore preferred that the outlet of the nozzle has an enlarged cross section as compared to the cross section of the nozzle at the point of penetration of the consumable wire 16.
Additional gas shielding is obtained to minimize contamination of the jet by atmospheric air, by introducing a protective gas at the outlet of the nozzle, by means of a hollow feed device 28 having the shape of the nozzle. terminal end of the nozzle.
According to fig. 2, the consumable wire electrode 16 is electrically insulated from the nozzle 11 serving as an electrode by means of a tubular insulating element 24 mounted in the side passage P. The main electrical connections with the power source 12 of the The arc takes place through line 13 with rod 10 and line 25 with consumable wire 16. Nozzle 11 is connected to the energy source by a resistor 26 which tends to maintain the nozzle at a potential. lower than that of the consumable electrode.
The apparatus of FIG. 2 can operate with feed speeds of the consumable wire higher than those of the apparatus of FIG. 1, because higher power levels can be maintained on the wire without damaging the nozzle. This is very important when wire rates reach 45.4 kg per hour, or more. A pilot arc is maintained between rod 10 and the nozzle to effect start-up of the process, and also to maintain an arc in the event that wire 16 stops or runs out for some reason. The electrical contact between the conductor 25 and the wire 16 can be placed on the outside of the nozzle in order to increase the heating of the wire by resistance.
In the variant shown in FIG. 3, the extension of the nozzle 27 downstream of the wire fulfills the same function as the extensions of the nozzles of FIGS. 1 and 2, that is, it helps to focus and direct the flow of molten particles and gases to a desired point or surface, and to minimize air contamination of the molten particles.
In the device according to fig. 4, the current coming from the source is divided between the nozzle 11, the electrode 16 formed by the consumable wire, and the workpiece 29, thanks to an appropriate choice of the values of the resistors 26 and 30.
The examples given below illustrate applications in which a metal surface deposition is carried out on metal base plates. Example 1 Arc work with consumable wire electrode in copper-nickel alloy (20 0 / o copper, < / I> 8001o of nickel). The apparatus according to fig. 1, with the exception that a nozzle with a straight bore, that is to say with a non-diverging outlet, is used. A gas mixture of 5.66 m3 of argon per hour and 0.382 m3 / h of hydrogen is made around a thoriated tungsten rod, with a diameter of 3.2 mm, and this is released. gas stream through a nozzle having a non-divergent passage with a diameter of 3.2 mm.
An arc is made to shoot, in direct current, at 75 volts and 150 amperes between these electrodes, the rod having a negative polarity. A wire made of an alloy of nickel and copper (80 0 / o nickel, 20 10 / o copper), with a diameter of 1.6 mm, is advanced through a fine pitch made in the side of the nozzle at a speed of 101 cm / min. Hydrogen is introduced as additional shielding gas, at a flow rate of 1.42 m 3 / h, into the outlet of the nozzle.
The hot gaseous jet and the atomized jet of molten metal coming from the wire electrode then strike a cold-rolled steel bar, cylindrical, having a diameter of 1.27 cm, being rotated and located 2.54 cm from the nozzle outlet. There was thus obtained a dense, adherent coating alloy having less than 10% of porosity and less than 10% of oxide as impurities.
Example II Arc work with a steel wire electrode.
The apparatus according to FIG. 2. A gas mixture is made at flow rates of 5.66 m3 / h of argon and 0.396 m3 / h of hydrogen, around a thoriated tungsten rod, having a diameter of 3.2 mm, and this gas mixture was released through a passage in the nozzle having a diameter of 3.2 mm at the throttle, and a divergent outlet with an angle equal to 30. An arc is made to shoot, in direct current at 80 volts and 110 amperes, between the rod of negative polarity on the one hand and the consumable wire electrode and the nozzle on the other hand. The consumable wire electrode draws 100 amps while a current of 10 amps is supplied to the nozzle.
The consumable wire electrode is a carbon steel welding wire having a diameter of 1.6 mm, moved at a rate of 444.5 cm / min. As additional protective gas, hydrogen is introduced at a flow rate of 1.42 m 3 / h into the outlet of the nozzle. The hot gaseous jet and the pulverized jet of molten metal coming from the consumable wire electrode, then strike a bar of carbon steel R, having a diameter of 1.27 cm, animated by a rotation and placed at 2 , 54 cm from the nozzle.
The resulting steel-to-steel coating is dense, adherent, and exhibits less than 5% porosity and less than 10% oxide as impurities.
The cross sections of the passages formed in the nozzles described above are circular but other shapes, for example rectangular, square, or oval, can be used.
