La fig. 1 en est une représentation schématique ; la fig. 2 est un détail d'une commande assurée par une touche du clavier de la machine ; la fig. 3 est un détail d'une commande d'une barre porte-caractères ; la fig. 4 est un détail de la commande de montée d'un élément déplaçable de la machine, chariot ou corbeille, en vue d'obtenir les majuscules ou les minuscules ; la fig. 5 est un détail de la commande de montée du ruban suivant la couleur désirée ;
En ce qui concerne le clavier principal, touches centrales et touches latérales, on peut maintenant résumer comme suit ses principales caractéristiques et ses principaux effets En toute position et comme usuel, les touches normales et les touches d'espacement (ainsi que la barre d'espacement) provoquent une avance d'un pas du chariot, les touches d'accent n'en provoquent pas ; toute touche centrale provoque l'impression dactylographique en noir pour les positions bas de casse et grandes capitales, l'impression dactylogra phique en vert pour la position petites capitales ;
La partie de gauche de la fig. 7 montre le clavier de service de ladite forme d'exécution de la machine. Pour la commodité, on peut distinguer sur ce clavier de service trois groupes de touches : un groupe repéré par l'annotation cc au-dessus des chiffres de a à 9, qui permet à l'opérateur de désigner le numéro d'une ligne dactylographique qui sera à corriger ultérieurement ;
une clef 1, comportant trois touches correspon dant à trois gravures différentes ; une clef h1 com portant les trois touches normal , supérieur et inférieur ; une clef IA., comportant les trois touches romain , italique et gras ; une clef 1,;3 comportant les trois touches bas de casse , petites capitales et grandes capitales ; un groupe de signaux d'annonces, par exemple d'annonce de dimensions : DH (hauteur de page), DC (corps), DJ (justification), DI (interlignage) ;
En se repartant au tableau de distributeur de liaisons électriques de la fig. 8, dont la capacité a été limi tée pour des raisons de commodité, mais qui montre tous les cas effectifs qui se présentent en ce distri buteur, on voit que chacune des touches indiquées, C (touche cen trale), L (touche latérale), S (touche du clavier de service autre que les touches 5, 6 et 7), E (barre d'espacement) et les touches 5, 6 et 7 du clavier de service, a une liaison 20 distincte vers le codeur 8 ;
chacune des touches indiquées a aussi une liaison 17 vers la corbeille 1, mais à travers des réunions évidentes maintenant d'après ce qui précède; chacune des touches L a de plus une liaison 19 vers le mécanisme de commande de changement de couleur du ruban, mais en réunion entre toutes ces touches L, vers la borne 75 de ce mécanisme ;
chacune des touches du clavier de service, y com pris les touches 5, 6 et 7, a une liaison 19 vers la borne 73 du mécanisme de changement de couleur du ruban et la touche 5 a de plus une liaison 19 vers la borne 74 de ce mécanisme, alors que les touches 6 et 7 en ont une, par réunion, vers la borne 76 d; ce même mécanisme ;

The present invention relates to a machine for perforating a continuous recording tape which can be used for controlling a tape-controlled composing machine. recording.
It is characterized in that it comprises a first set of keys, called central keys, a second set of keys, called lateral keys, a third set of so-called service keys, several elements bearing symbols suitable for being controlled by the operator. one of said central keys and said side keys for producing a mark on a control sheet, the orientation of said mark depending on the central and side keys actuated, said key action being recorded on said tape by means of a perforator controlled by an encoder device.
The appended drawing represents, schematically and by way of example, an embodiment of the machine forming the subject of the invention.
Fig. 1 is a schematic representation; fig. 2 is a detail of a command provided by a key on the keyboard of the machine; fig. 3 is a detail of an order for a character bar; fig. 4 is a detail of the control for raising a movable element of the machine, cart or basket, with a view to obtaining upper or lower case letters; fig. 5 is a detail of the command for raising the ribbon according to the desired color;
fig. 6. schematically illustrates the encoder included in the machine; fig. 7 is a representation of the keyboard of the machine; fig. 8 is a diagram of the distribution of the electrical connections from the keys of the keyboard; fig. 9 shows the typed line numbering counter that the machine has.
The machine shown schematically in FIG. 1 comprises a keyboard for maneuvering a character basket 1, this keyboard being divided into three parts, namely: a keyboard of central keys 2, a keyboard of side keys 3 and a keyboard of service keys 4. In this Last, in particular, three particular sections have been indicated, respectively made up of the small capitals key 5, the large capitals key 6 and the lowercase key 7.
Also indicated at 314 is a control key for returning the carriage and advancing the roller, which will act directly on a mechanism for controlling these effects, indicated at 414.
The assembly constituted by said keyboard and the character basket is intended to produce a typed copy of a recording which is simultaneously produced on a perforated tape 10 by a perforator 9 controlled by an encoder 8. This encoder 8 is produced. electrically associated with the keypad through an electrical connection distributor 214.
The encoded recording and the typed copy will therefore include at. both the actual printed text and the service information relating to that text. They will also include, in the example described, the line numbers of the typing copy. A line counter-numberer 11 is actuated by the advances of the roller 201 and provides printing of the line numbers in a manner which will be described later.
It is also connected by electrical connections 211 to the electrical connection distributor 214 and, consequently, acts on the encoder 8 from this distributor.
It can be noted here that this electrical connection distributor has four outputs. The first, 17, goes to the bin for character bars 1; the second, 18, to a mechanism 12 for the vertical movement of the basket (or the trolley), while the third, 19, goes to a mechanism 14 for changing the colored tape track; of course, the fourth output, 20, is directed to the encoder 8. The characters of these outputs will be specified later.
The tape 13 used by the machine has several tracks of different colors. The movement of this polychrome tape, to bring it vis-à-vis the type to be struck, is controlled by said mechanism 14 for changing the track. This mechanism is, through the intermediary of the distributor 214, under the control of both the keys of the main keyboard 2, the side keys 3 and the keys of the keyboard of: service -4, in which the keys 5, 6 and 7 will have special effects on said mechanism 14.
The raising of the basket 1 to obtain the typing capitals is under the control of the mechanism 12 actuated from the keyboard by the intermediary of the electrical connection distributor 214. The machine shown in FIG. 1 therefore makes it possible to produce, on the one hand, a typed copy, the lines of which are numbered consecutively; on the other hand, a perforated tape carrying in code the information of this copy.
Both of these documents include not only the text to be printed, but also all service indications which can be supplied from the service keypad 4. On the typed copy obtained; indications and service information are between laced in the text and distinguished from this text by a colored characterization.
These. results can be obtained by means of the arrangements which will now be described. With some exceptions to be specified later, each keypad key 15 is associated with an electrical contact 16 which closes when the key is pressed (FIG. 2). The key 15 is pressed against the action of a res out 215 conductor, and grounded.
A part of the contact 16 is fixed to the bar of the button 15, for example by soldering or soldering, therefore in electrical contact with the mass by the spring 215. The other part of the contact 16 is elastically supported by -a spring 216 and electrically connected to this spring, which is fixed on and electrically connected to a conductive part 218 isolated from the ground by an insulating spacer '217.
Each time key 15 is pressed, therefore, an electrical circuit is closed, through a unidirectional element 219, @ through the four outgoing wires 17 to 20. These outgoing lines are numbered corresponding to the outputs of the link distributor. electrics 214 of fig. 1, to directly recall the destinations.
One way in which control of the character bars can be achieved is shown in fig. 3. When pressing a key (fig. 2) closes a circuit passing through the wire 17, a current flows in an electromagnet 21, hence the attraction of the plunger 22 thereof during the closing of this circuit cooked. The plunger 22 is linked to a crescent lever 23 which it rotates temporarily against the action of a return spring 224.
It is the temporary tilting of this lever 23 which causes the actuation of a character-carrying bar 37 as follows: a unit 24 is constituted by a bar hollowed out along its length. This bar can pivot upwards from a substantially horizontal position, around an axis 25 at one of its ends. It normally rests by a support piece 26 on the upper part of the crossing lever 23. At its other end, the bar 24 has a slightly recessed portion 27. In its center, it carries an axis 28 which crosses it.
A cam 29 is mounted idly on this axis, around which it can make a complete revolution. In its rest position, the cam 29 has a recessed part facing a rubberized roller 32 driven by a permanent and uniform movement of rotation around its axis 33. At rest, therefore, the cam 29 is not in motion. contact with the roller 32 and it is, on the other hand, prevented from rotating by a lug 30 abutting against the tooth 31 of a comb which has as many teeth as there are mechanisms similar to the one described above, i.e. as many teeth as there are character bars to operate in the basket.
When the crescent lever 23 swings under the control of the electromagnet, it no longer supports the support piece 26 and the assembly 24 falls to the point where the cam 29 comes into contact with the roller 31. The roller drives the cam, released from its engagement with the comb 31, and this action is favored by the presence of a serrated contour of the cam in its useful part at least, as shown. The contour of the cam has been established such that the crew 24 is gradually lifted. This notably allows the crescent lever 23 to resume its rest position.
The ascent of the crew 24 then causes a tilting of a lever 34 around its fixed axis 35 and, by the traction of a bar 36, activates the character bar 37 which pivots around its axis 38, d 'where the typing of the desired character by this bar (in the position indicated in dotted lines in fig. 3). The subsequent drop of said bar brings it back to its rest position. The return to general rest of this mechanism is self-evident.
One way in which the raising of the basket or the trolley can be carried out to obtain upper or lower case letters is shown diagrammatically in FIG. 4 which shows the electric control circuits. The rise of the carriage is actuated by an electromagnet 39, one of the terminals of which is connected to the battery 40 and the other 48 is connected to an assembly of contactors 44 and 47 arranged as follows It comprises three terminals of attack 41, 42 and 43. Terminal 41 is connected to all the wires 18 of the keys of the service keypad 4 other than the keys 5, 6 and 7 of this keypad.
Terminal 42 is connected to wire 18 of key 7 (lower case). Terminal 43 is connected to wire 18 of key 5 (small capitals) and wire 18 of key 6 (large capitals) of this service keypad.
Terminals 41 and 43 drive contactor 44 which comprises an electromagnet 45. Terminal 43 directly drives this electromagnet, the output of which is to terminal 48 of electromagnet 39. The circuit of the terminal 41 passes through a contact 49 which is normally closed in its rest position, and from this contact 49 to said terminal 48. The contact blade 49 is mechanically secured to that of another contact 50. The blade of this contact 50 is grounded.
The other pole of the contact 50 is electrically connected to the paddle of a contact 51 which belongs to the contactor 47. This contactor 47 comprises an electromagnet 46 having 42 for one of its terminals and 48 for the other. . The other pole of contact 51 is electrically connected to terminal 43.
The operation of this device is as follows: at rest, thanks to the return springs 249 and 251, the contacts 49 and 51 are kept closed. Contact 50 is on the contrary open.
If an impulse comes from any key on the service keypad other than keys 5, 6 and 7, the attack is made via terminal 41. Contact 49 being closed, the electromagnet 39 is energized and the carriage (or basket) is lifted. The service signal corresponding to the pressed key is typed in upper case, which is the desired result.
As soon as the pulse ceases, the electromagnet 39 ceases to be supplied and the controlled element, cart or basket, returns to the minuscule position, which is also the desired effect then.
If an actuation pulse comes from key 7 (lowercase), it arrives via terminal 42 and directly supplies the electromagnet 39 so that the sign chosen to mean lowercase is typed in upper case. Simultaneously, contact 51 is open, which eliminates any parasitic effect in the control. As soon as the pulse has ceased, the electromagnet 39 is no longer supplied and the aforesaid element returns to the lowercase position, as due.
If an impulse comes from either of the 5 small capitals and 6 large capitals keys, it arrives through terminal 43. The electromagnet 39 is still energized so that the sign chosen to mean small capitals or large capitals capitals is typed in upper case. However, in this operation an additional function is performed. The electromagnet 45 is energized and the contact 49 is open, while the contact 50 is closed.
As the contact 51 remains closed, the electromagnet 45 is connected to ground by one of its terminals through the contacts 50 and 51 in series, while the other terminal, 48, leads to the source 40 to through the electromagnet 39. The electromagnets 39 and 45 therefore remain permanently supplied. Consequently, the ordered element, basket or basket, will also remain permanently in the upper case position, which is the effect sought here.
If, in the meantime, any key on the service keypad other than the lower case key 7 is pressed, the corresponding pulse arrives either through terminal 43, which has no new effect, or through terminal 41, which is ineffective since the contact 49 is open but has no drawback since the expected effect would have been to put the controlled element in the upper case, which has already been achieved.
On the other hand, if, in the meantime, the lowercase key 7 is pressed, an impulse arrives via terminal 42. It first has the effect of opening contact 51 by energizing the electromagnet 46. L 'electromagnet 45 sees its circuit interrupted, contact 50 opens, contact 49 closes and one is returned to the rest state initially described.
In addition, the pulse received at 42 passes through the electromagnet 39 and the lower case sign has therefore been correctly capitalized as it should. It is only then that the cart, or the basket, returns to the lowercase position, which is indeed the effect required in the latter case, and remains there.
One embodiment of the device. to ensure a change of track of the polychrome ribbon 13 of FIG. 1 during typing is shown schematically in FIG. 5. A part 52 carries, at its upper part, a comb 53 in which the polychrome ribbon will be engaged in the mounted machine.
The ribbon, not shown, will be assumed to have four tracks, respectively black, green, blue and red, stepped from top to bottom on the ribbon.
The part 52 has, at its base, three oblique ramps 54, 55 and 56 of equal widths and regularly increasing obliquities in the order of their enumeration. The part 52 rests on a movable base 57 actuated by a rod 58, this by means of three wedges 59, 60 and 61.
The rod 58 is moved by the ordinary device for raising the ribbon in a typewriter, and which has the effect of releasing the typing position outside the times when a character bar is actually actuated.
The corners 59, 60 and 61 have a horizontal base surface sliding on the upper surface of the base 57. Each of them is biased by a spring 62 in the position where their upper ramp is released as far as possible from the corresponding ramp of the room. 52. In this condition, the three ramps 54, 55 and 56 are in contact with the upper ramps of the corners 59, 60 and 61, the part 52 is at the maximum approximation of the part 57.
It is then the black track of the polychrome ribbon that comes into play if a character is struck on the keyboard.
The wedges 54, 55 and 56 are provided with respective rods 63, 64 and 65. Each rod can be independently actuated to pull the wedge which it controls against the action of the spring 62 connected to this wedge. As soon as such an action ceases, the wedge returns to its position shown, of rest, because the spring 62 then takes over control.
The coming to the left (in FIG. 5) of the corner 54 will obviously cause a certain rise of the tape holder 53, hence a change of track, from black to green for example. The coming to the left of the corner 60 will cause a greater rise, for example double, and consequently the passage to blue of the ribbon for typing characters. Actuation of wedge 61 will then cause a higher rise, three track widths, and therefore the strike will turn red on the typed copy.
It should be noted that the mechanism being described does not exclude a rise simultaneously controlled by two of the wedges, or even by all three. It is quite obvious, however, that it is the corner with the greatest slope which in such a case will impose the color of the strike.
Each of the rods 63, 64 and 65 is articulated on a corresponding rod of an electromagnet plunger. This articulation is intended to allow the play attributable to the rise of the part 57. These electro-magnets are indicated at 66, 67 and 68 corresponding to the rods 63, 64 and 65. They each have a terminal connected to a battery common 240.
The other terminals 69, 70 and 71 of the three electromagnets are individually connected, as will be specified, to an electromechanical device 72, itself driven by four inputs 73, 74, 75 and 76.
In this device, the terminal 73 only serves as a return to the terminal 71 of the electromagnet 68. It is connected in multiple to all the links 19 which come from the service keypad, including the specialized keys 5, 6 and 7 of this keyboard. The rest of the device 72 is essentially constituted by two contactors 77 and 84.
The contactor 77 comprises an electromagnet 78 and two twin vanes 79 and 80, biased by a spring 279. The vane 79 closes two contacts 82 and 83 in its rest position. The pallet 80 leaves a contact 81 open in its rest position. The fixed pole of contact 81 is grounded.
One of the terminals of the electromagnet 78 is connected, on the one hand, to the drive terminal 74, on the other hand to the paddle 80 of the work contact 81. The other terminal of the electro - magnet 79 is directed towards the contactor 84 which it attacks by a contact 85.
The fixed pole of contact 82 is connected to terminal 70 of electromagnet 67. The fixed pole of contact 83 is connected to terminal 75 of device 72.
The contactor 84 comprises an electromagnet 86 and the already mentioned contact 85, the pallet of which is indicated at 87 and returned by a spring 287 so that this contact is closed when the electromagnet is at rest. One of the poles of the electromagnet 86 is earthed, the other is connected to the input terminal 76 of the device.
Terminal 74 of device 72 is connected to wire 19 from key 5, small caps, on the service keypad. Terminal 75 is connected to wires 19 coming from all side keys of the main keyboard. Terminal 76 is connected to wires 19 of the two keys 6, large capitals, and 7, lower case, of the service keyboard.
The operation of the complete device of FIG. 5 can then be exposed as follows. In the general rest position, the contacts 82, 83 and 85 are closed, the contact 81 is open. The electromagnets 78 and 86 are not excited. The electromagnets 66, 67 and 68 are also de-energized. The corners 59, 60 and 61 are extended, that is to say in the positions shown. The part 52 is in the low position, the ribbon is black in the example chosen.
The operator presses any of the keys on the main keyboard 2 (fig. 1). None of these keys, it can be specified now, is associated with a starting wire 19. The typing is done in black, which is the desired effect. The operator presses any of the keys on the service keypad. By the link 73-71, the electromagnet 68 is excited. The wedge 61 is attracted and the ribbon rises to its highest position. The service sign will be struck in red, which is correct in the example being described.
As soon as the pressed key has been released, the electromagnet 68 will no longer be powered, the wedge 61 will return to its rest position, so the tape will turn black if neither of the other two wedges had been previously actuated. As said, there is no incompatibility between placing several wedges in the working position in the described mechanism, and therefore the rise to red could very well have been effected from a position of the corresponding tape holder as well. well in green than in blue and, of course, only in black.
Keys 5, 6 and 7 of the service keypad, in addition to the above effect, cause the following specific effects.
If the small caps key is pressed, terminal 74 is grounded and closes the series excitation circuit from electromagnets 78 and 66 to battery 240 through contact 85 closed. The ribbon goes up to green. As the electromagnet 78 is energized, the contact 81 closes and the contacts 82 and 83 open. The closing of the contact 81 establishes the main circuit of the electromagnet 78 and, consequently, that of the electromagnet 66.
Corner 59 will remain pressed. Therefore, after the small capitals sign has been struck in red by the transient action of the corner 61, any subsequent strike will be made with the ribbon in green, which is indeed the desired effect.
If then one of the 6 large capitals and 7 lower case keys is pressed, on the one hand the corner 61 will be temporarily activated, and the corresponding sign will therefore appear in red on the copy but, on the other hand, by input 76, the electromagnet 86 will be excited and therefore open the contact 85. The aforementioned retaining circuit of the electromagnets 78 and 66 is therefore interrupted and the green ribbon position canceled. The ribbon reverts to black, which is the desired effect.
If the contact 81 was already open, the excitation of the electromagnet 86 would have had no special result, the sign would have been struck in red and then the ribbon would have returned to black, as expected.
Pressing one of the side keys 3 of the keypad (fig. 1) puts terminal 75 of device 72 to earth, and, contrary to the actions described above, terminal 73 remains isolated, therefore the electromagnet 68 remains de-energized and the ribbon does not go up to red. Two cases can arise. Or else the electromagnet 78 has been previously energized, the contact 83 connected to the driver terminal 75 is open. The insertion of a side key remains without action on the mechanism of FIG. 5.
This is what must be in such a case because it can only be a question of a false operation on the keyboard; in the example being described, a side key cannot be validly pressed when in the small capitals position. Such a maneuver would only be possible by having recourse to a fifth track color of the tape, which goes beyond the scope of the example considered although clearly falling within the scope of the invention.
It can therefore be seen that the assembly gives a security vis-à-vis a false operation of the keyboard of the machine in the direction indicated above. Or the depressing of a side key is legitimate and the contact 83 is found closed when the terminal 75 is grounded. The excitation circuit of the electromagnet 67 is then completed to cause the ribbon track change mechanism to rise to blue, which is the expected effect. This rise is only temporary and, as soon as the side key is released, terminal 75 is isolated from ground, the electromagnet 67 de-energizes and the wedge 60 correctly returns to its rest position.
A variant of this mechanism may have a single wedge, with a uniform or conformed slope without a projection, with amplitude displacement conditioned according to the desired rise and controlled by pulling the keyboard, in the above-specified manner.
The encoder 8 (FIG. 1) can be produced in a manner which is shown, in part of this encoder, in the diagram of FIG. 6. Such an encoder embodiment is moreover common in arithmetic computers. The links 20 coming from the distributor 214 of FIG. 1 arrive on the left of the diagram to form an array of rows of a grid whose array of columns is formed of conductors 88 each going to one of the perforation control electromagnets of the perforator 9.
We consider a digital perforation code at seven times, therefore seven electromagnets, from (1) to (7) and, consequently, seven columns 88 in the illustrated matrix. Only a small number of line conductors have been shown and a definition of the key from which the conductor 20 comes. The first line relates to the action of the space bar on the keyboard, any strike of this bar must of course cause a perforation on the recording tape.
The next two lines refer to signs on side keys 3, the next three lines to keys on the main keypad 2, and the last four lines shown refer to signs on keys on the service keypad 4 The extension of the encoder is self-evident. Each digital code is defined by the distribution of the interconnections between a particular row and all of the columns, and these interconnections are effected, in a known manner, by means of elements with unidirectional conductivity, crystal diodes for example.
Before giving an example of a seven-time code, it is worth referring to fig. 7 which illustrates, in a directly readable manner, an example of presentation of the keyboard.
In this example, the part referenced Main Keyboard is subdivided into two parts, one referenced Central Keys comprising the typing in BLACK or GREEN, the other referenced Lateral Keys comprising the typing in BLUE. The links between the keys of the Central Keys part and, on the one hand, of the keys forming part of the set referred to as the Service Keypad comprising the keystroke in RED,
on the other hand of the Side Keys set indicate character remote matches for typed copying. Thus, for example, pressing the small capitals key on the service keypad will cause the letter P to be printed in red on the typewriter, while the Italian key will print, in red, the letter K, and so on.
The central part of the main keyboard has a layout similar to that of the usual keyboard of a typewriter. In the example shown, it nevertheless has some variations. The number 1 is typically distinguished from the lowercase letter 1 which is usually used to represent it in typing. For example then, the typographical sign representing the number 1 is carried in the capital position of the key which has the sign at in lowercase position, in substitution for the sign & which is not usual in typography.
The _ sign, underlined in typing, is not usual in typography where a particular variety of characters is used for a similar purpose, most often italics. We have therefore deferred in lowercase position of the key having 8 in position ma juscule, the character), close the parenthesis.
The typing sign 0 is deleted, which is possible when it is matched with the letter O in the upper position (by pressing the Upper key on the service keyboard). A key becomes available at the end of the upper row of the normal typewriter keyboard and is used, as a dead key, that is to say not moving the carriage forward, to accommodate the grave accent and acute accent. It is indeed desirable to provide these accents for letters other than the letters é, è, à and ù.
The side part of the main keyboard can have a variable number of keys. By way of illustration, a certain number of them have been shown in FIG. 7, such as An end-of-line union key which will be translated on the typed copy by the normal union sign of the key to which it is paired, but by a different punched code or, more simply, by the absence code since the calculator that will use the recording will not have to take typing clippings into account. Typing the normal hyphen will instead produce a perforated code on the ribbon.
A subtraction key, whose graphic typography is distinct from the hyphen; this key will produce a code on the ribbon while producing the normal hyphen on the typed copy.
Keys for open and closed quotes, typographically distinct and resulting in distinct codes. Their remote pairing with the quotation mark key of the typewriter will not differentiate them on the typewriter, apart from their blue color, of course.
The sign cedilla should preferably also be able to be assigned to letters other than ç. A side keyboard key has been provided for him, twin with the circumflex accent. The typing of the cedilla will cause the printing of a special code on the perforated record, the printing in blue of a circumflex accent on the typed copy.
A side key is assigned to the typographically distinct multiplication sign of lowercase x, while being paired with said typewriter x key for graphic typist copying.
Another side key is assigned to the digit zero, which is typically distinct from the letter O, to produce a distinct code on the tape, while only marking a capital O in blue on the typewriter.
Another side key may have the two driving points and three driving points signs, in the upper position and in the lower position respectively. It is paired for typing purposes with the dot and semicolon key, for example, while generating separate electrical codes.
The above list is not exhaustive, but indicates what can be expected from the presence of the side keys on the main keyboard. Particular attention should now be paid to the two pairs of em and em side keys. These keys, which correspond to fixed blanks, are, in one of these pairs, paired for typing with keys on the main keyboard, for example the L and M keys in upper case positions.
This makes it possible to check on said copy that an em or a half em has been typed and not the normal justifying space (machine space bar). The other pair of these keys causes the same punched codes as the previous ones, but they are linked for typing copy to the space bar, hence the absence of any visible sign on said copy if the operator considers it. more convenient.
With regard to the main keyboard, central keys and side keys, we can now summarize as follows its main characteristics and its main effects.In any position and as usual, the normal keys and the space keys (as well as the bar of spacing) cause the carriage to advance one step, accent keys do not; any central key causes the typing printing in black for the lower case and large capitals positions, the typing printing in green for the small capitals position;
the sign typed is direct, that is to say that of the character bar corresponding to the key pressed, having regard to the position in which we are; as usual, pressing the space bar does not cause any printing.
Any lateral touch causes the typographic printing in blue; as usual, the keys combined with the space bar do not cause any impression; they only cause the carriage to advance one step; each impression due to a side key appears in the form of the character of the twin key of the central keyboard that corresponds to it; it can be noted that, in the example described, the small capitals position is not exploited by the side keys, but this is in no way imperative in itself.
Any key, central or lateral, causes the recording on the tape of a code which is specific to it; this is also true for the white keys and the space bar: - the code of the space bar is a justifying space code, that of the white keys is a non-justifying space code.
The left part of fig. 7 shows the service keyboard of said embodiment of the machine. For convenience, we can distinguish on this service keypad three groups of keys: a group identified by the annotation cc above the digits from a to 9, which allows the operator to designate the number of a typing line which will have to be corrected later;
a key 1, comprising three keys corresponding to three different engravings; a key h1 comprising the three keys normal, superior and inferior; a key IA., comprising the three keys roman, italic and bold; a key 1,; 3 comprising the three keys lower case, small capitals and large capitals; a group of advertisement signals, for example advertisement of dimensions: DH (page height), DC (body), DJ (justification), DI (line spacing);
snapshot zone announcements: IB (entry), IBB (exit); end announcements: IF (end of paragraph), IFF (end of chapter), IFFF (end of book).
Each key on the service keypad is remotely linked to a central key on the main keypad. The character typed on the typed copy will therefore be the character of the twin key, but printed in red on said copy. Hitting each key will move the cart forward one step. It will also produce the recording of a separate code on the coded tape 10 (fig. 1).
With the exception of the group of keys of the key I, .3, the special effects of which have been detailed previously in the description, pressing any key on the service keyboard automatically causes the typing in large capitals for the sign. service thus struck, without maintaining this position.
There is in fact a fourth group of service signals, it is that constituted by the figures forming the numbers of the typing lines. These signals are produced and perforated automatically in a manner which will be specified later, in relation to FIG. 9.
From an examination of the keyboard and the functions previously described, it emerges that each key of the keyboard is not, in fact, equipped with the four connections indicated for a commonplace key in FIG. 2.
Referring back to the electrical connections distributor panel in fig. 8, the capacity of which has been limited for convenience, but which shows all the actual cases that arise in this distributor, we see that each of the keys indicated, C (central key), L (side key) , S (service keyboard key other than keys 5, 6 and 7), E (space bar) and keys 5, 6 and 7 of the service keyboard, has a separate link to encoder 8;
each of the keys indicated also has a link 17 to basket 1, but through meetings evident now from the above; each of the keys L also has a link 19 to the control mechanism for changing the color of the ribbon, but in conjunction between all these keys L, to the terminal 75 of this mechanism;
each of the keys on the service keypad, including keys 5, 6 and 7, has a link 19 to terminal 73 of the ribbon color change mechanism and key 5 additionally has a link 19 to terminal 74 of this mechanism, while keys 6 and 7 have one, by union, to terminal 76 d; this same mechanism;
In addition, the S keys have a connection to terminal 41 of the control mechanism for raising the trolley (or the basket), while terminal 42 of this same mechanism receives a connection from key 7 and terminal 43 a meeting link from keys 5 and fi.
The unidirectional conductivity elements ensuring, on the one hand, the aforementioned meetings, on the other hand the prohibition of control returns between circuits, are shown in the diagram of FIG. 8.
The advertised example of seven-time code applicable to said machine embodiment can now be defined as follows; it is a binary code comprising only the values of digits zero and one (see tables below).
It will be noted that such a code, in fact made up for each word of two parts, a prefix and a number, leaves full latitude for extending the keyboard program for possible more complex variants of the service and side keyboards.
The line counter-numberer 11 (fig. 1) can be made according to the diagram in fig. 9. In this diagram, a mechanical numberer 90 of the conventional type has been indicated, such as, for example, the numberers used for counting objects, numbering formulas in printing, and so on.
The counter shown comprises five knobs corresponding respectively to the units, tens, hundreds, thousand and tens of thousands. These five knobs 91 to 95 follow one another from right to left in the figure, starting with that of the units. The internal mechanism of the dialer does not have to be described here, because it is a completely conventional device. It will be recalled that, for one unit, the wheel 91 completes a tenth of a turn.
After a complete revolution from its original position, it determines the advancement of the thumbwheel by tens of a tenth of a turn, and so on. The numberer 90 is carried by an axis 96 supported by a support 97 located on the side of the tens of thousand wheel.
On the opposite side, an axis 98 is located along the length of the axis 96 but is independent of the latter. The axis 98 is used to control the counting movement, thanks to a key 99 which extends along the axis 98 and slides as well as the axis itself in a ratchet 100. The latter is carried by a support 101 and can only have a rotational movement.
Unlike the wheels of common numberers, the wheels of numberer 90 do not have engraved facets. They have an insulating outer surface, or set back relative to the envelope cylinder except over a sector 102 equal to one tenth of the circumference.
This sector is intended to constitute an electrical contact element and is made of conductive metal. It is isolated from the mass, for example by being embedded in an insulating material, except for its surface. It is quite clear that the figure indicated by any wheel can be charac terized by the angular position of its sector.
The assembly of the support 97, of the axis 96, of the number 90 and of the axis 98 constitutes a unit which can perform a horizontal translational movement by sliding along a slide 103. An additional guide guide not shown (so as not to overload the drawing) opposes the rotation of this crew around the axis 103.
The axis 103 can rotate and its rotational movement is controlled by a lug 104 located in the interior of the part 97 and which slides in a groove 105 of the axis 103. This groove has a helical shape at the start of its outline. , on the left of the drawing, then it becomes rectilinear on its right part. At the right end of the axis 103 is a crank pin which acts on a rod 106. This rod 106 itself controls a pawl 107 which meshes with the ratchet 100.
On the sliding support piece 97 is mounted a rod 108 provided with two fingers 109 (left) and 110 (right). The distance between these fingers is equal to the stroke of the part 97 in its greatest displacement. These two fingers operate a switch 111 which normally remains in the position in which it was put. the last operation of a lever 112.
In other words, when the part 97 has been up to its end of travel to the left, the finger 110 has acted and the switch 111 remains open until the maximum end of travel to the right of this part 97. At this moment, the finger 109 acts on the lever 112 and the switch 111 closes. It remains closed until the part 97 returns to its extreme left position, and so on.
On the top of part 97 is a contact boss 113, grounded. During the translational movement of the part 97, the boss 113 passes under a line of five contacts, 114 to 118. The spacing between these aligned contacts is the same as between the dials of the numberer 90.
The four pads 114 to 117 are electrically connected to each other and to one of the terminals of the switch 111. The pad 118, furthest to the right, is isolated from the other four. It is connected, on the one hand, to the second terminal of switch 111, on the other hand to a terminal 119.
A circular ring 120, integral with the frame, is centered on the axis 98, but without contact with this axis. It has a centered circular opening whose diameter corresponds to that of the bosses 102 of the five dials of the numberer 90. On the internal field of the ring 120 are ten contacts 121 regularly spaced and isolated from the ground.

Slightly shifted to the right of crown 120 is a second crown 123 of the same dimensions and shape, fully conductive on its inner field, isolated from ground and connected to terminal 119.
At the end of the axis 98 is a lug 124 isolated from the mass.
Centered on axis 98 and further to the right is a crown 125 followed by another crown 126. Both are conductive, but crown 125 is isolated from ground while crown 126 is set. the mass. A spring with interposed insulation (not shown) normally separates the crowns 125 and 126, but an electrical contact can be established between the two parts under the effect of a thrust exerted from left to right.
Room 125 is electrically connected to terminal 119.
The rings 125 and 126 have a centered circular hole and in addition a notch 127 which just delivers the passage to the lug 124 in one of its positions of rotation around the axis 98, and for this position alone. This position is that which corresponds to the reading of the number 1 on the unit dial 91.
The lengths are such that, in any position of the wheel of the units other than that which has just been mentioned, when this wheel is engaged both in the crown 120 and the crown 123, the lug 124 pushes the crown 125 and establishes contact between 125 and 126. Further to the right is a fixed stop 128.
When the lug 124 comes into contact with this fixed stop, the stud <B> 113 </B> is exactly under the stud 118 and the wheel 95 of the numberer 90 is engaged both in the two rings 120 and 123.
The whole of part 97 and its crew is normally biased to the left by a spring, not shown, and in this position on the far left, numberer 90 is completely clear of crowns 120 and 123. Boss 113 is then to the left of the contact 114. The finger <B> 110 </B> is then in contact with the lever 112 which caused the opening of the switch 111.
The distance that the part 97 must cross to the right for the wheel 91 to be engaged in both the two rings 120 and 123 is equal to a character width of the typewriter. The width of the dials of the numberer 90 is equal to this width, more precisely to the length of which the carriage advances from one letter to the next.
Finally, and still at the same instant considered here, the typewriter carriage is just in contact with the crew 97 by means of an appropriate stopper.
The operation of the line numbering device can now be explained as follows. Starting from the position described last, the striking of the line will be able to start, the carriage then moving to the left. As long as the line is being typed, no action takes place in the line counter-numberer system.
When the operator has commanded the return of the carriage, it returns to the right. In its course it meets the crew 97 on which it comes up against and pulls it along in its course by sliding along the axis 103. The finger 110 leaves the lever <B> 11 </B> 2, but the contact 111 remains open.
From the start, the lug 104 acts on the helical ramp of the groove 105 and turns the axis 103 slightly, which causes a backward movement of the pawl 107 which is then cocked, but does not yet act. Its position will thus be maintained until the crew 97 returns to its rest position.
In the general movement to the right, the wheel 91 engages in the rings 120 and 123. The pad <B> 113 </B> and the pad 114 are then in contact.
Two cases can then arise. If the dial of the units 91 marks a number other than the number 1, the lug 124 cannot engage in the notch 127. It abuts on the crown 125, which stops the movement of translation and at the same time establishes contact between the rings 125 and 126. The contact between 113 and 114 is ineffective since the switch 111 is open. On the other hand, the crown 123 is earthed through the intermediary of the terminal 119 and the crowns 125 and 126.
The conductive boss 102 of the wheel of the units 91 therefore establishes the grounding of one of the contacts 121 of the ring 120 via the ring 123. One of the wires 122 is therefore grounded. Of course, it is necessary to assign at the outset one of the digits, zero included, to each of these threads, the order of succession on the crown 120 being natural gold and the direction of succession on the crown being that the rotation of the dials of the dialer.
The grounded wire therefore indicates the number which must be read on the wheel engaged in the crowns 120 and 123.
This is currently the units wheel. The wires 122 are connected to act in the same way as the wires terminating at the ground contacts by the keys of the keyboard. They therefore cause in particular the striking of the desired number and, by way of normal consequence, the advancement of the cart by one unit to the left. The dialer then disengages from the crowns and is returned to the starting position.
The units number has been typed in the margin and the operator can start typing a correctly aligned line of text again. However, it should be added that, in its return to the starting position, the lug 104 found the helical ramp of the groove 105. This had the effect of allowing the axis 103 to rotate so as to advance the pawl 107.
This, in turn, actuated the ratchet 100. Thanks to the key 99, this rotational movement was transmitted to the wheel of the units 91 and the numberer 90 integrated a unit.
If the dial 91 now marked the number 1 when, in the above operation, movement to the right of the crew, it was found in the crowns 120 and 123, the pin 124 will be engage in the notch 127. No stop is therefore opposed to the continuation of the movement to the right, the contact 125/126 is not established. The movement to the right continues until the lug 124 meets the stop 128.
Along the way, none of the wheels 91, 92, 93 and 94 have been read, although they have passed successively under the crowns 120/123 since, then, the crown 12.3 is not grounded, nor by 126 , nor by <B> 111. </B>
At the end of the stroke, the boss 113 is located under the contact 118, which puts the crown 123 to ground. At the same time, the tens of thousand wheel 95 is engaged in the 120/123 crowns. This wheel is therefore effectively read, that is to say that one of the wires 122 is grounded. This deter mine as said previously the actuation of a character bar of the typewriter and the advance of one step of its carriage to the left.
The wheel 95 emerges from the crowns 120/123 and is replaced there by the wheel 94 of the mille. Previously, the finger 109 did its duty at the end of the stroke and closed the switch 111. The pads 114 to <B> 117 </B> will therefore be in an electrical connection with the terminal 119 and the crown 123 up to that the movement -on the left of the crew 97 has been completed. It can therefore be seen that the same process as described will be repeated for each of the knobs 94, 93, 92 and 91, in order.
They will be read and a number will be struck for each of them on the sheet of paper and the carriage will advance one step until it is returned to the starting position. The integration of a unit into the dialer remains unchanged.
The encoder control wire feeders are shown in the diagram. The line codes will therefore be recorded in accordance with their typing on the perforated tape.
