Process for the preparation of heterocyclic dye intermediates The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of novel heterocyclic dye intermediates of the formula
EMI0001.0007
in which one Y two hydrogen atoms, the other Y one member of the group
EMI0001.0009
and X, which is in one of the two a-positions, denotes NO or NH2.
The method is characterized in that an 8-nitro-2,3-dichloro-1,4-naphthoquinone with an oxynaphthalene, e.g. B. a- or ss-mono- or dioxynaphthalene, such as 1-naphthol, 2-naphthol, 1,5-dioxynaphthalene or 2,6-dioxynaphthalene, at elevated temperatures in the presence of an alkaline acid-binding agent.
In this reaction, depending on the reaction participants used and the conditions used, products are obtained in which the nitro group is in the cis position or in the trans position with respect to the heterocyclic O atom, or else mixtures thereof. It should be emphasized that the naphthol occurring as a reaction participant must be unsubstituted in an o-position to each OH group.
Compounds in which X is NH are obtained by subjecting the nitro product resulting from the abovementioned reaction to alkaline reduction in a known manner, for example by treatment with alkaline sodium hydrosulfide or sodium hydrosulfite. The resulting amino compound is obtained in its leuco form, which can be converted into the keto form in the usual way by oxidation, for example by treatment with air, etc.
In addition to the substituents mentioned, the starting materials of the process can contain further substituents such that the dye intermediates obtained have substituents which are inert with respect to the desired use of the dye intermediates.
Pyridine is preferably used as the alkaline acid binding agent for use in the process according to the invention, but similar organic tertiary amine bases can also be used, such as tripropylamine, dimethylcyclohexylamine, N-methylmorpholine, low-alkylated pyridines, etc. The alkaline acid binding agent preferably also acts as Diluent for the reaction, which is carried out at elevated temperatures, preferably at the boiling point.
The compounds prepared according to the invention, especially those in which X is NH2, can serve as intermediates in the preparation of new vat dyes, for example by reaction with an acylating agent such as benzoyl chloride, terephthaloyl chloride, etc., as disclosed and claimed in the US patent No.
2,870,168, with halogen-substituted linkable polycyclic ketones such as dibenzopyrene quinone, anthanthrone, pyranthrone, violanthrone, etc., as disclosed and claimed in US Pat.
2,862,931, or with halogen derivatives of anthraquinones which are unsubstituted in an ortho-position to each halogen substituent, under the following carbazole ring closure as disclosed and claimed in U.S. Patent No. 2,813,875.
In the following examples, unless otherwise specified, parts are parts by weight. Unless otherwise stated, parts by weight and parts by volume are in the ratio of g to cm3. Example 1 A batch of 90 parts by volume of pyridine, 5.8 parts by weight of 1-oxynaphthalene and 10.9 parts by weight of 8-nitro-2,3-dichloro-1,4-naphthoquinone (produced according to the USA patent no. 1681599)
The mixture was stirred under reflux for 6 hours. The reaction product was filtered off at room temperature, washed with pyridine and acetone and dried. A mixture of isomers of the structure was obtained
