The invention relates to a free piston self-generator with internal combustion comprising an auxiliary gas turbine driving at least one auxiliary device and a device regulating the inlet section of the generator. the auxiliary turbine according to the operating pressure of the auto-generator.
In known installations of this type, the auxiliary turbine is driven by the driving gases which are delivered by the driving cylinder of the autogenerator and which consist of a mixture of compressed air and incompletely expanded combustion gas. . The auxiliary turbine, in these known installations, is connected, either in series or in parallel, with the main receiving machine for said engine gases, this main receiving machine generally being constituted by a gas turbine.
If the auxiliary turbine is fitted in series with the main turbine, all driving gases must pass through the auxiliary turbine.
If the auxiliary turbine is connected in parallel with the main turbine, it is supplied with less gaseous masses but always at variable pressure according to the speed of the main turbine. However, in many cases, the power of the auxiliary device, or of all the auxiliary devices driven by the auxiliary turbine, remains constant or only slightly variable when the power demanded from the main turbine and, consequently, the pressure of the gas engines vary. It is therefore necessary to size the auxiliary turbine for the minimum gas pressure and to reduce the section of this turbine when the gas pressure is high.
This arrangement is particularly disadvantageous in installations intended for the propulsion of boats and in which it is possible to lower the pressure of the engine gases to very low values when stationary or when operating at low load.
Thus, in these marine installations, the section of the auxiliary turbine, connected parallel to the main turbine, must vary in the ratio of 1 to 100 if the gas pressure above atmospheric pressure drops by 3.2 to 0.1 kg / cm2. The situation is a little less unfavorable, but not satisfactory nonetheless, in generating installations in which the full speed of the main turbine driven by the engine gases supplied by the autogenerator must be maintained, in idle operation.
In these latter installations in which the gas pressure varies, for example, between 3.2 and 0.7 kg / cm, the ratio which must exist between the maximum and minimum values of the sections of the auxiliary turbine is 5.5 / 1.
The object of the invention is to make it possible to eliminate such drawbacks and, to this end, the free-piston self-generator according to the invention is characterized in that the auxiliary turbine is driven by air taken from the air reservoir which is interposed between the driving part and the compressor of the auto-generator and which contains the supply air to said driving part.
This air even has a relatively high pressure when the installation is idle, so that the ratio between the maximum and minimum pressures of this air is less than the ratio between the maximum and minimum pressures of the gases discharged outside. of the engine cylinder of the auto-generator. Consequently, by supplying the auxiliary turbine with air taken from said reservoir, it is possible to be satisfied with a variation in the inlet section of the auxiliary turbine which is much smaller than. in the case where the auxiliary turbine is supplied with engine gas parallel to the main turbine.
Thus, in a marine installation, the ratio between the maximum and minimum sections of an auxiliary turbine supplied with air taken from the supply air to the engine cylinder can be, for example, equal to 7 , 5 (against 100 in the case of the engine gas supply), the pressure in the tank containing the supply air to the engine cylinder being able to be, for example, at full load, equal to 4 kg / cm2 and , in idle operation, equal to 0.8 kg / cm 2, these values corresponding to respective pressures of 3.2 and 0.1 kg / cm 2 at the outlet of the engine cylinder.
For a generator installation, the maximum and minimum values of the pressures prevailing in the tank containing the supply air to the engine cylinder can be equal, respectively, to 4 and 1.5 kg / cmz, which allows to reduce the ratio of the maximum and minimum sections of the auxiliary turbine to the value of 3.6 (against 5.5 in the case of the auxiliary turbine supplied with engine gas and connected in parallel to the main turbine).
The invention therefore makes it possible to greatly reduce the dimensions of the auxiliary turbine and to obtain a simpler adjustment, since the ratio of the sections of the auxiliary turbine between idle operation and full load operation of the self-generator. may be much smaller than in the case of an auxiliary turbine supplied with engine gas and mounted parallel to the main turbine.
The single figure of the drawing shows, by way of example, one embodiment of the auto-generator according to the invention.
The auto-generator shown in the drawing comprises two coaxial cylinders, the first 1 of which constitutes an engine cylinder, while the second 2 constitutes, in its part 2a which is turned towards the cylinder 1, a compressor cylinder and, in its part. opposite 2b, a return energy accumulator.
In these two cylinders works a free piston whose part 3 of this piston constitutes the driving element which cooperates with the engine cylinder 1, while the part 4 of said piston works in the cylinder 2 and constitutes a compressor element, its annular face turned. towards the element 3 ensuring the suction and the compression of the air in the part 2a of the cylinder 2, while its opposite face cooperates with the air mattress which is trapped in the part 2b of the cylinder dre 2.
The engine cylinder 1 comprises an injector 5 and intake 6 and exhaust 7 openings, these openings being controlled by the driving element 3 of the free piston.
The compartment 2a of the cylinder 2 is provided with air suction valves 8 and discharge valves 9 through which the compressed air is transferred to an air reservoir 10 which surrounds the engine cylinder I and which constitutes a outer casing for it.
The air is therefore sucked through the valve 8 as the piston 3-4 completes its outward stroke under the influence of the combustion of the fuel in the cylinder 1 and it is compressed and discharged into the tank 10 when the piston 3-4 completes its reverse stroke under the influence of the energy which was stored in the energy accumulator 2b during the previous stroke.
The exhaust openings 7 of the engine cylinder 1 are connected by a duct 11 to a main gas turbine 12, which is driven by the mixture of compressed air and incompletely expanded combustion gas which escapes through the openings. 7 during the period during which these openings are discovered by the driving element 3.
In a variant, the auto-generator could comprise two opposing free pistons with motor elements 3 working in opposite directions in the same motor cylinder and with compressor elements working in two cylinders arranged on either side of motor cylinder 1, both opposing free pistons being interconnected by a synchronization mechanism.
The self-generator described comprises auxiliary devices, not shown, for example a pump which supports the circulation of cooling water in the self-generator and / or a fan ensuring the cooling of this water, driven by a tur auxiliary bin. This turbine is driven by pressurized air taken from the tank 10.
The auxiliary turbine comprises a wheel 13 provided with blades at its periphery and fixed to a shaft 14. The mission of this turbine comprises several nozzles 15a, 15b, etc., comprising, at their end adjacent to the wheel 13, Guide vanes 16, each of these nozzles being controlled at its inlet end by a valve designated respectively by 17a, 17b, etc. Each valve, when open, communicates the corresponding nozzle with a common inlet space 18 in the form of a torus. The latter space is connected by a conduit 19 to the reservoir 10.
By successively opening or closing a greater or lesser number of valves 17a, 17b, etc., therefore, an enlargement or reduction of the useful inlet section of the auxiliary turbine is caused.
The number of valves 17a, 17b, etc., which are open at a determined time, is adjusted by means of a centrifugal speed regulator 20 which is driven, via helical wheels 21 22, from of the shaft 14 of the auxiliary turbine and which, by means of a hydraulic or pneumatic servomotor device, moves a rack 23 which actuates a pinion 24 which is wedged on a shaft 25 on which is mounted a cam 26 which acts on the valve stems 17a, 17b, etc.
The servomotor device comprises a distributor 27 controlling a working cylinder 28 in which slides a piston 29 which is connected to said rack 23, the rods of the distributor 27 and of the piston 29 being connected to a lever 30 on one of the ends of which said regulator 20 acts. When the pressure of the air which drives the auxiliary turbine rises or falls, the turbine tends to rotate faster or slower. A slight change in the turbine speed has the effect of causing the regulator 20 to close or open a corresponding number of valves 17a, 17b, etc., and to decrease or increase, so corresponding, the useful inlet section of the auxiliary turbine, which thus maintains the speed of the latter at a practically constant value.
The air, after having passed through the blades of the impeller 13, escapes through an exhaust duct 31 fixed to the casing 32 of the turbine.
The shaft 14 drives, via the toothed wheels 33a, 33b, the auxiliary devices of the autogenerator.
In certain cases, it may be advantageous to heat the air taken from the casing 10 of the autogenerator before this air arrives at the inlet of the auxiliary turbine. This heating can be obtained, for example, by an exchanger 34 which heats the air which is in an auxiliary tank 35 which is interposed in the duct 19. This heating can also be obtained by the combustion of a certain quantity of fuel. in duct 19.
In other cases, it may, on the contrary, be advantageous to cool the air taken from the reservoir 10 before this air arrives at the inlet of the auxiliary turbine. This cooling can take place in an auxiliary tank, similar to that designated by 35, but provided with cooling means. As a result of such cooling, at the outlet of the auxiliary turbine (exhaust duct 31), air having a temperature below ambient temperature is obtained. This air can be used, for example, to cool the driver's cab of a locomotive.
For the reduced loads of the auto-generator described, the power required for driving the auxiliary device (s) can also be slightly reduced. This is why the speed of the auxiliary turbine is adjusted so that it is reduced when the auto-generator operates at reduced load. To this end, the tension of the spring 36 of the regulator 20 is made variable as a function of the pressure in the inlet space 18 of the auxiliary turbine, a pressure which varies with that prevailing in the reservoir 10 and therefore with the load of the auto-generator.
One of the ends of the spring 36 is fixed to a threaded rod 37 provided with a pinion 38 with which a rack 39 cooperates, the latter rack being connected to a piston 40 which can move inside a cylinder 41 one of the ends of which is connected, by a duct 42, to the inlet space 18 of the auxiliary turbine, so that the pressure prevailing in this space acts on one of the sides of the piston 40, while that the other side of this piston is under the action of a spring 43 which is located inside the cylinder 41.
In order to limit the action of the adjustment of the device 37 to 43 to a certain range of pressures which corresponds to the reduced loads of the autogenerator, a stop is provided inside the cylinder 41 which stops the piston 40. when the pressure in space 18 reaches a value corresponding to the maximum pressure of said pressure range.
