Method for repairing damage to track elements It is known that in the course of operation use in wheel-bearing track elements of all types, such as rails, frogs, points tongues and. a., in various ways wear and tear and defects in the driving head, especially in the driving surface. For example, when the locomotive wheels slip when starting or when the wheels lock when braking, local depressions are created in the driving surface. In the case of frogs, particularly heavy wear occurs at the tips.
Furthermore, other damage such as flaking, cracks and the like can occur. a., the causes of which may be due to manufacturing defects in the rail material, come to light in the course of operational use.
To maintain an operationally safe track and to protect the vehicles, such damage points are removed by welding, where up to now, for example, electric arc welding with uncovered or concealed arc or similar processes or gas fusion welding have been used.
In both processes, the faulty areas are eliminated in such a way that a weld pool is created locally in the base material by the electric arc or the welding torch and this is filled with liquid filler material by melting off the welding electrode or welding wire. Both processes have the disadvantage that the exact execution of the welding work depends to a large extent on the skill, craftsmanship, mood and general condition of the welders performing the work, and that the welding work is carried out over a relatively long period of time he demands.
It has now been found that the aluminothermic process commonly used for rail butt welding can also be used in a modified manner for eliminating such locally limited damage to wheel-bearing track elements of all kinds, such as rails, frogs, switch blades and the like. a., can be used, whereby various disadvantages inherent in the other welding methods used so far are avoided.
The present invention thus relates to a method for mending damage to track elements, characterized in that alumino-thermally generated steel is poured onto the pre-welded, molded and preheated damage of the track element.
A device suitable for carrying out the method is characterized according to the invention by a molding box, for example made of sheet steel, cast steel or the like. Materials, with movably angeord designated, against the foot of the track element from supporting struts and with underneath the head of the track element retractably arranged Bodenblechen and above the head of the track element removable and relocatable limiter plates.
In the accompanying drawing, in an exemplary embodiment of the method according to the invention, the individual operations in the repair of a damaged area on a Vignole rail and an embodiment of the device according to the invention used are illustrated.

Fig. 3 shows the same rail with a molding box attached to it be in plan view.

FIG. 5 shows, in a representation analogous to FIG. 3, how a casting is produced in the molding box with the aid of a model.
FIG. 6 is a cross section along the line VI-VI in FIG. 5.
Fig.7 shows the same as Fig.5 with the model removed.
FIG. 8 is a cross section along the line VIII-VIII in FIG.
FIG. 9 shows a plan view of the rail after welding, but before the damaged area has been reworked.
FIG. 10 is a cross section along the line X-X in FIG. 9.
By means of a cutting device or by grinding out the defect a according to FIGS. 1 and 2 is worked out so deep and so wide that the healthy, no longer corroded material is reached. 3 and 4, a downwardly open molding box c is placed on the site prepared in this way, the firm fit of which on the rail head b is aimed by adjustable struts d . The molding box c is then closed with retractable bottom plates e and, for the purpose of forming a casting mold, is filled with adhesive sand Cr up to just below the upper edge of the rail head b.
After the lower part has been tamped in, the cavity which will later receive the aluminothermic steel is generated according to FIGS. 5 and 6 by tamping a model f. In the case of smaller imperfections, the shape is reduced by inserting limiting plates g into strips h provided for this purpose. Instead of adhesive sand, chamotte or another refractory material could also be used to form the casting mold.
Then the damaged area is preheated using a burner or, in the case of larger areas, more than one burner. After the required temperature has been reached and the casting mold has been dried, an alumino-thermally produced on-site steel, which is adapted to the rail material in terms of hardness and wear resistance, is poured onto the preheated base material.
The alumino-thermally produced steel flows according to FIGS. 7 and 8 via a pouring pot i through two or more pouring channels k onto the preheated base material and bonds with it to form a homogeneous whole.
After the casting has been completed, the casting mold, in which the already solidified and firmly encrusted slag is located, is slightly raised in order to separate the then still liquid aluminothermic steel from the slag crust and to achieve its even surface solidification. This process is of particular importance because of the usually very small height of the layer of aluminothermic steel to be welded on with regard to the subsequent smooth machining of the weld.
The sand mold including solidified aluminothermic slag is then removed. By appropriately metering the amount of steel, it is sufficient that the mirror of the weld metal does not protrude high above the surface of the driving surface, so that the least possible processing is required. FIGS. 9 and 10 show the completely welded, not yet machined damage area. The protruding alumino-thermal steel L is grinded off, sanded off, cut off or removed in any other way. Then fine machining is carried out with the grinding machine.
Numerous tests, investigations and practical building site tests have shown that the removal of wear and tear and imperfections in the running head of wheel-bearing track elements of all kinds, such as rails, frog tips, switch blades and the like, using aluminothermic steel infusion results in perfect, crack-free and wear-resistant build-up welds.
From a technological and metallurgical point of view, the build-up welds using the aluminothermic process are on a par with the build-up welds produced with the electric arc process or with gas fusion welding, but they can be carried out faster and - if the project involves greater experience - more economically.
The aluminothermic welding method described differs fundamentally from the other methods used so far in that to eliminate the defective areas, welding is not carried out drop by drop over a long period of time, but rather that the welding of the entire surface is carried out in a brief casting process, whereby also Damaged areas can be restored that could not be remedied with the previous methods, for example damaged areas that extend through the entire track surface to the rail web, for example.
