The present invention relates to a fluid sealing device between a rotary shaft and a housing surrounding this shaft, for example in a pump, so as to prevent any loss. of fluid out of this housing. This device is particularly useful for pumps or other similar machines intended to treat sand or other solid material and for which there are serious problems relating to abrasion and intense wear of the exposed metal parts and gaskets. .
It is known in practice to inject or release the fluid, water for example, in a stuffing box or in a sealing chamber of a pump and to allow the fluid to pass freely in the chamber of the pump, so that the fluid continually washes the packing to lubricate it, prevents loss of fluid through the packing, cools the latter, and prevents an adverse flow of sand or silt carrying fluid into the stuffing box or sealing chamber. Such a process is not satisfactory and the exposed parts of the stuffing box or of the sealing chamber have to be repaired or replaced very often.
Likewise, when the pump is put to rest after a period of use, nothing prevents the sand or silt from settling in the stuffing box or the sealing chamber and filling it. It then becomes very difficult to put the installation back into operation, and the required starting torque is very high and, moreover, subjects the parts of the machine to a great effort.
The free flow of the fluid through the stuffing box or the sealing chamber also requires a very high consumption of fluid and, consequently, an impossible to control dilution of the material passing through the installation. Furthermore, wear and the formation of cavities have always been a serious problem, particularly in the area where the shaft or the wear sleeve which protects it meets the rotating part. Significant damage to the shaft or the wear sleeve results and the latter can be completely cut and become unusable.
The object of the invention is to provide such a sealing device which makes it possible to overcome these drawbacks and these difficulties and to solve to a large extent the problem of the wear of the various parts of a pump.
The fluid sealing device forming the subject of the present invention, between a rotary shaft and a housing surrounding this shaft, said housing constituting with said shaft an annular pressure chamber supplied with a pressurized fluid and having an outlet of discharge of the fluid, is characterized in that it comprises rings encircling said shaft and arranged in the annular pressure chamber in sealing relationship with the housing to constrict the flow of the pressurized fluid through the pressure chamber annular along the shaft towards the discharge outlet,
said outlet having constricted passages through which the pressurized fluid is discharged under high pressure at a determined rate.
The drawing represents, by way of example, a form and an alternative embodiment of the device according to the invention. Fig. 1 is a vertical section of this embodiment.

Fig. 4 is a section of a variant of said sleeve.
Fig. 5 is a section along 5-5 of FIG. 1. FIG. 6 is a partial section, on a larger scale, of a detail shown in FIG. 2.
Fig. 7 is a section similar to that of fig. 2 made in another shot.
Fig. 8 is a section, on a larger scale, of a detail shown in FIG. 1.
Fig. 9 is a section similar to that of FIG. 8, showing the various organs in another position.
In the embodiment shown, the sealing device is applied to the shaft of a pump, the rotor of which is carried by a shaft I and wrapped in a rubber sheath 2, the pump comprising a cover 3 also protected. by a rubber sheath 4. The shaft 1 is surrounded by a wear sleeve 5 which has a flange 6 integrally with the sleeve and resting against the sheath 2 of the rotor, constituting with it a tight seal under the action of a collar 7 screwed onto a threaded part of the shaft 1. The frictional engagement between the flange 6 and the sheath 2 of the rotor ensures the rotation of the sleeve 5 with the rotor without sliding and without loss of fluid or silt internally between the flange 6 and the rotor and towards the shaft 1.
The pump cover 3 has an axial recess 8 forming a shoulder 9 at its internal end, that is to say at the end closest to the rotor of the pump. The annular space between the recess 8 and the wear sleeve 5 of the shaft 1 constitutes an annular pressure chamber intended to be supplied with pressurized fluid, as will be seen below. The protective rubber sheath 4 of the cover 3 extends radially inwards to cover the surface formed by the shoulder 9.
The sealing device further comprises a flexible rubber ring 10, cone-shaped, which is connected at one end to a threaded ring 11 and at the other end to a ring 12 of Z-shaped section. The space between the rings 11 and 12 allows considerable expansion and contraction of the rubber ring 10 for its lateral adjustment on the shaft 1 or for the adjustment of the device itself. A stop ring 13 having a flange is press-fitted in the ring 12 and abuts against a radial face of the flange 6 of the wear sleeve 5, forming a tight seal with this surface. The stop ring 13 is made of a material chosen according to the fluid intended to pass through the device and the pump.
When it comes to dealing with sand and water, this ring can be made of synthetic resin. The stop ring 13 has an L-shaped section and is mounted on the ring 12 so as to allow the ring 10 and the ring 12 to overlap the flange 6 of the sleeve 5 and extend to a short distance. distance from the radial face 37 of the flange, leaving an annular space 36 extending radially between the end of the rubber ring 10 and the rubber sheath 2 of the rotor, this clearance constituting a discharge outlet for the fluid as we will see later.
The device further comprises a series of rings 14, 18 and 27 arranged axially along the shaft 1, adjacent to each other. The ring 14, called the inner ring because it is the closest to the space 36 constituting the discharge outlet of the fluid, comprises a threaded axial flange 15, intended to engage the threaded ring 11. The threads of the ring 11 and flange 15 are left-handed threads if the pump rotates in the direction of clockwise movement as shown in fig. 2, thus preventing the assembly from unscrewing during rotation.
Two recesses 40 are drilled in the outer face of the inner ring 14 to receive an open-end wrench allowing the inner ring 14 to be screwed onto the ring 11. The ring 14 comprises a radial flange 16 directed outwards on its outer face, this flange 16 supporting a compressible seal 17 sealingly engaging with a radial face of the shoulder 9 at the inner end of the axial recess 8, so as to prevent at this level the passage of the fluid from the recess 8 to the chamber of the rotor of the pump outside the sealing device.
The ring 18, called the intermediate ring, abuts against the inner ring 14 and has the same outer diameter as the latter to form an annular recess 45 constituting an annular fluid inlet chamber 19 in the annular pressure chamber. , in communication with a wise fluid inlet pitch 20 provided in the pump cover. The intermediate ring 18 comprises an axial flange 21 with a diameter greater than that of the ring and slightly less than the diameter of the axial recess 8, so as to form an annular space around the intermediate ring 18. for the fluid communicating with the fluid inlet chamber 19.
The flange 21 cooperates with the wear sleeve 5 to form an annular fluid chamber 24 and comprises an inwardly directed radial flange 22 against which is clamped a flexible sealing ring 25 by its outer periphery, by means of a clamping ring 26, so as to leave free the inner part of the sealing ring 25. A series of inclined openings 23 are formed in the intermediate ring 18 and spaced around the circumference of the latter to form a free unconstrained communication between the fluid inlet chamber 19 and the fluid chamber 24.
The internal diameters of the thrust ring 13, the inner ring 14 and the intermediate ring 18 are slightly larger than the outer diameter of the wear sleeve 5, in order to form a tight annular passage 50 throughout. of the sleeve 5 intended to restrict the flow of the pressurized fluid from the chamber 24 to the discharge outlet formed by the annular space 36.
A ring 27, called an outer ring because it is furthest from the discharge outlet of the fluid, has a shoulder 28 for supporting a compressible sealing ring 29, arranged so as to be compressed between the outer ring 27 and the flange 21 of the intermediate ring 18 and forced to sealingly engage with the surface of the axial recess 8.
A thin axial flange 30, one piece with the ring 27, bears against the free part of the flexible sealing ring 25 to bend the latter and ensure its sealed engagement with the wear sleeve 5, this part of the sealing ring being placed in a position approximately perpendicular to the openings 23 for the fluid (Figs. 1 and 9). The bending of the seal ring 25 ensures engagement of the sleeve 5 only along a line of contact and not through the full thickness of the seal ring, thereby largely eliminating the friction between the seal ring. sealing ring and rotating sleeve, while ensuring maximum sealing pressure.
The set of rings is kept under pressure in the annular pressure chamber having the axial recess 8 by a nut 31 fixed to the pump cover by means not shown, for example by studs and nuts.
The flange 6 of the wear sleeve 5 (fig. 2, 6 and 7) has a periphery 34 with axial taper, at a distance from the overlapping part of the ring 12 with a Z section and forming with the latter, and in cooperation with the stop ring 13, a conical annular nozzle 33 extending axially and encircling the wear sleeve 5.
The radial face of the flange 6 of the sleeve 5, which is tightly engaged with the stop ring 13, has radial grooves 32 and spaced circumferentially, which form with the cooperating surface of the stop ring 13 radial nozzles each communicating at one end with the constricted annular passage 50 along the wear sleeve and at the other end with the annular nozzle 33. The pressurized fluid flows from the annular pressure chamber limited by the pressure. The recess 8 and passing through the inlet chamber 19, the openings 23, the fluid chamber 24 and the constricted annular passage 50, is discharged through the radial nozzles into the annular nozzle 33.
This nozzle 33 communicates with the discharge outlet of the pressurized fluid formed by the annular space 36, between the rubber ring 10 and the rubber sheath 2 of the rotor. This annular space 36 forms a simple discharge outlet for the pressurized fluid from the annular pressure chamber into the pump chamber, and when the shaft 1 with its wear sleeve 5 and the discharge nozzles rotate. at high speed, the pressurized fluid projected into the annular space 36 becomes a simple radiant jet which washes the surface of the rotor 2 and prevents reverse flow of the pumped fluid in the bearing.
In the variant shown in FIG. 4, the radial face of the flange 6 of the sleeve 5 has curved grooves 38 and not radial grooves such as 32, to give additional impetus to the discharge of the pressurized fluid from the outlet into the chamber body. the pump. In a variant, the radial grooves 32 or curved 38 could be formed in the face of the stop ring 13 and not in the flange 6 of the sleeve 5.
To assemble the device, before the pump rotor and shaft 1 are mounted in the tank, we bring together the rubber ring 10 and its component parts with the inner ring 14 and the sealing ring 17 in the pump cover, in the position shown in fig. 1, the inner ring 14 being screwed hard on the ring 11 by means of an open-end wrench placed in the recesses 40 made in the inner ring 14. The intermediate ring 18 and the outer ring 27 are then assembled together in the tarpaulin, without the sealing ring 29.
This preliminary assembly has the effect of pushing the flange 30 and the sealing ring 25 further forward than the normal position, thus compressing the ring 25 and increasing its internal diameter sufficiently to allow the sleeve to be inserted. wear 5 from the rotor end of the tarpaulin without resistance of this sealing ring 25. When the intermediate ring 18 is pushed into place against the inner ring 14 and when the wear sleeve 5 is inserted, the outer ring 27 is removed from the tarpaulin and the sealing ring 29 is fitted to the shoulder 28. The outer ring 2.7 is then inserted again into the tarpaulin and the whole set of rings is compressed by means of the nut 31.
The pump rotor with its shaft 1 is now adjusted and tightened by means of the threaded collar 7 so as to form a tight seal between the rubber sheath 2 of the rotor and the radial stop face of the flange 6 of the sleeve 5.
The axial adjustment of the rotor relative to the cover, with a view to compensating for wear, for example, can be ensured, without disturbing the sealing device or requiring its adjustment, by a new compression of the rubber ring 10 between the The inner ring 14 and the flange 6 of the wear sleeve, such additional compression being allowed by the axial clearance between the axial flange 15 of the inner ring 1.4 and the stop ring 13.
In operation of the device, the pressurized fluid is used as a lubricant for the rotary shaft and is pumped through the inlet passage 20 into the annular pressure chamber in the axial recess 8. From the chamber. inlet 19 into said annular pressure chamber, the pressurized fluid passes through the openings 23 in the chamber 24 and along the constricted passage 50 to the radial discharge nozzles and the annular nozzle 33. The fluid ring under The relatively long pressure contained in the passage 50 and acting on the sleeve 5 reduces the wear of the sleeve itself to a minimum value.
The exit of the pressurized fluid into the pump body through the annular space 36 is controlled by the number and size of the cross sections of the radial nozzles formed by the grooves 32, and as these grooves open onto the surface of the stop ring 13, this surface is carefully lubricated at all times.
By controlling the amount of pressurized fluid supplied to the stuffing box and the controlled outlet of the pressurized fluid from the device to the pump, the material having passed through the pump can be maintained at a fixed density overall. time and, when the passing material is to be used in any process, the dilution produced by passing the pressurized fluid from the stuffing box is kept within a defined limit.
In known devices where the pressurized fluid passes through the stuffing box without the outlet being controlled, the pumped material can, as we have seen, return to the stuffing box once the pump rotor has stopped spinning. This results in excessive wear on the stuffing box and its parts and high power is required to start the pump.
In the device described, the pumped material cannot, to a certain extent, thanks to its consistency, be returned to the stuffing box, because for this it would first have to enter the annular space 36 which, in practice, is as narrow as possible and from there pass through radial grooves 32 before entering the stuffing box. The exclusion of the dense material from the stuffing box prevents any solidification in this box and thus allows easier starting of the pump after stopping it.
By the use of a flexible ring such as the rubber ring 10 protecting the entire stuffing box and disposed between the rotor 2 and the side walls 4 of the pump cover, no metal part of the The shaft or its sleeve 5 is not exposed to the swirling material passing through the pump and, in particular, the wear sleeve 5 is carefully protected against wear and the effect of cavitation, which greatly increases its durability. lifetime.
A considerable reduction is also obtained in the quantity of pressurized fluid passing through the stuffing box, the quantity of fluid required being less than one-sixth of the quantity needed when the fluid passes more or less freely through the stuffing box. It should be noted that, if the shaft 1 of the pump does not have a wear sleeve 5, the flange 6 is carried directly by the shaft 1, being formed either by a collar in one piece with the shaft , either by a collar fixed to the shaft by a key or in any other way.
It is obvious that the device described here in its use with a pump shaft can be used to seal the motor shaft of any other rotary mechanism.
