<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

GASKET FOR CENTRIFUGAL PUMPS.
The present invention relates to a high pressure centrifugal pump, usable in particular for conveying hot liquids and on the shaft of which a protective bearing is provided.
It is known that the operational safety of centrifugal pumps depends to a large extent on the condition of the gaskets of the seals. This is especially true of high-pressure, fast-running pumps, particularly intended for the delivery of hot liquids.
Extensive research has led to the following findings @
The duration of a seal is determined by the speed of rotation of the shaft by the pressure prevailing upstream of the seal, therefore by the pressure with which the seal is applied to the shaft, by the friction between the seal and the shaft and the resulting temperature of the seal, finally by Inaction of the temperature of the liquid to be delivered on the sliding surfaces of the seal.
The friction between the seal and the shaft must be reduced as much as possible by the quantity of lubricant which is incorporated into the seal. However, due to the high pressure and the heating, the relatively small reserve of lubricant suse pretty quickly. When the packing is subjected to lower pressures, the lubrication by the lubricant is replaced by one by the pumped liquid, which must permanently escape in small quantities through the packing, But a high internal pressure strongly compresses the seal and applies it strongly to the shaft, which hinders the arrival of the lubricating liquid.
The sliding surface of the packing, which dries quickly under these conditions, then damages the smooth surface of the shaft or its protective bushing, so that the friction increases and occurs over time.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
in addition a rotational drive of the seal by the shaft, drive which results in irregular wear. When the segments of the packing are rotated, their constituent material is itself compressed. The length of the segments is reduced and they no longer completely surround the shaft.
As a result of the irregular wear, the individual segments are rotatably offset with respect to each other, so that the constituent material of the inner segments is axially forced by the liquid under pressure into the gaps between the rings. following segments.
The irregularities of the filling increase further; this becomes less and less elastic, produces an increasing wear of the surfaces of the rotor and of the seal, gives rise to pressures irregularly distributed over the periphery of the rotor, to flexures of the latter, to contacts inside the pump body and, consequently, damage to the pump.
In summary, the causes of the difficulties encountered by the packing are as follows:
1) Insufficient cooling of shaft or seal packing.
2) Insufficient wear resistance of the shaft or the protective bearing.,
3) Rotational movements of the segments of the joint.
4) Formation of gaps between the segments of the lining under the action of compression and simultaneous shortening of the segments.
5) Insufficient lubrication of the packing.
6) Additional lubrication of the lubricant, which in turn requires protective devices to prevent the penetration of lubricant into the discharged liquid.
Research has shown that it is possible to overcome the difficulties indicated above by virtue of the new construction described below, and which satisfies the conditions necessary for obtaining a pump which operates satisfactorily. -
According to the invention, helical grooves are provided in the protective pad in which the cooling water circulates around the shaft and around the pad.
According to features of the invention, the coolant arrives axially and it is pumped into the helical grooves by a centrifugal pump, or else the helical cooling grooves are cut taking into account the direction of rotation for l obtaining the effect of two helical pumps connected in series, passing the cooling water from the outside to the inside around the shaft, this cooling liquid then circulating axially from the inside to the shaft. outside in the pad.
According to other features of the invention, the bearing bears, facing the lining, a thin coating of wear-resistant material. The inner end of the seal bezel is shaped into an outer cone and has bosses, while the gasket has at the opposite end another boss segment on which a powerful compression spring acts.
The lining consists of a continuous or one-piece helical segment, the direction of winding of which is chosen according to the direction of rotation, and which is axially compressed beforehand. The cavity containing the packing advantageously receives a lubricant, and it contains split annular segments having bosses and forming flushing channels connected to suitable pipes.
The device necessary to overcome these drawbacks is shown in the attached schematic drawing.

The conditions necessary to obtain a satisfactory operating pump are satisfied as follows.
1) Sufficient cooling - - To obtain as intense a cooling effect as possible, the shaft 1 is cooled. The heat given off by the friction of the segments .2 is transmitted directly by the protective bush 3 of the l cooling water shaft 4 which evacuates it. If necessary, the necessary cooling water must be delivered by a separate centrifugal pump, through channels 5 and 6 in the bearing.
The rotation of the shaft and the centrifugal force make radial entry and circulation difficult.
In the present case, an exial inlet at 7 is provided and an irreproachable circulation of the cooling water is obtained by the fact that the circulation grooves 5 and 6 are cut helically, taking into account the direction of rotation. This gives the effect of two helical pumps suitably connected in series.
2) Increase in wear resistance @ This condition is met by the intense cooling already mentioned above and by the use of a material which is particularly resistant to wear to constitute the sliding surface of the lining. The protective bearing 3 of the shaft therefore receives, facing the lining, a thin coating 8 of wear-resistant material.
3) Locking of the seal in rotation - The seal ring 9 is cut into an outer cone at the end 10 facing the seal, so that the outer segment is slightly spaced from the shaft.
Since this arrangement reduces the clamping pressure of the outer segment against the shaft, the outer layer of the seal is no longer clamped so strongly in the gap between the bezel 9 and the shaft, which prevents premature crushing. of the lining layer in this annular gap.
To prevent rotational movements of the segments as much as possible, the side faces have bosses or jaws II, 12 engaged with other fixed bosses or jaws preventing rotation.
As the volume of the packing becomes smaller during operation, as described above, the contraction is compensated by a powerful spring 13, so that the packing is constantly pushed over the bosses. 11 and 12
4) Elimination of the formation of gaps and of the irregular deformation of the segments A 1 - the opposite of the rules hitherto provided for high pressure pumps, the packing is not made in parallel and separate segments 2 ,
but constituted by a single helical segment. Both ends are suitably whistled, and the packing is pre-compressed for even application of the side faces.,
5) Addition of lubricant The compartment 14 between the cups 15 and 16 of the helical spring is filled with lubricant so that it is interposed between the packing and the pumped liquid The additional filling takes place through the channels 17,18 using a special injection pump
6)
Device preventing the penetration of lubricant into the pumped liquid To obtain uniform liquid outflow over the entire periphery of the protective bearing of the shaft, it is necessary to provide narrow annular channels 19 and 20, so that the pressure differences are sufficient over the entire perimeter It is possible to obtain these channels by sufficient axial compression of the rings 16 and 21, which
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
have suitable spacing bosses. Through these capillary channels 19,20, the discharged liquid or the lubricant is discharged through conduits 22,23 provided for this purpose.
When the taps are opened for the further filling of the compartment 14 through the tubing 17, the annular chamber 20 and the tubing 23 are "flushed" until the discharged liquid appears.
The compartment 14 is then filled with the aid of the injection pump, until the lubricant exits through the annular channel 19. The annular channel 20 is at the same time discharged through the tubing. 23, so that it is possible to control the passage of lubricant in the pump body.
