on applique alors, à l'un des enroulements, une im pulsion de courant dont le temps de montée est très court (par exemple inférieur à 0,1 microseconde), qui fait passer le champ magnétisant à la valeur (-H "t) ;

La colonne 9 du tableau ci-après montre que le pourcentage des molécules, contenant des métaux à l'état trivalent, est très voisin de 50, même pour des compositions de départ ne contenant que 25 % de Fe,0;;

L'addition d'un certain pourcentage d'oxyde de zinc à un mélange de sesquioxyde de fer et d'oxyde de manganèse qui, comme il a été dit, n'a pas d'in fluence sur la rectangularité du cycle d'hystérésis, permet d'augmenter l'induction B", obtenue pour un champ H", donné ;

The present invention relates to ferromagnetic materials of the ferrite type, exhibiting substantially rectangular hysteresis cycles. and can be used in so-called memory magnetic recording devices, magnetic controllers, magnetic amplifiers, etc.
In these applications, these materials are used in the form of cores generally of toroidal shape, or at least of closed shape without an air gap.
We already know of: materials with a hysteresis cycle of rectangular shape, in particular alloys of iron and nickel or of iron and silicon, the magnetic properties of which are most often made anisotropic either by cold rolling, or by heat treatment under, magnetic field. These materials generally exhibit high saturation inductions and low coercive fields.
The great drawback of these metallic materials, despite their generally high saturation induction, is the low value of their resistivity, leading to losses, which are significant by fault currents. These high losses result in an increase in the response time and a distortion of the hysteresis cycle, which then loses its rectangularity character as soon as the frequency increases.
If we want to use the cores at frequencies of several megacycles per second, we must obtain them in very small thickness, of the order of a few microns, and their price quickly becomes prohibitive.
Before discussing the present invention, a few definitions of the quantities relating to hysteresis cycles and other magnetic quantities are first of all given. which will be used in the following.
A substantially rectangular hysteresis cycle, plotted for a magnetic field practically reaching saturation, is defined by the following coefficients Bs: magnetic induction at saturation, in gauss; B,.: Remanent magnetic induction corresponding to the saturation cycle, in gauss; H,: coercive field corresponding to the cycle at saturation, in oersted; ratio of remanent induction to in

plotted for very high fields.
The response time is defined by considering two windings, of negligible time constants, placed on a core made of the magnetic material considered; this nucleus is subjected to the magnetizing field H ", between H,", and 2 H ,. ",, then to the field.
EMI0002.0018
a current pulse is then applied to one of the windings, the rise time of which is very short (for example less than 0.1 microseconds), which causes the magnetizing field to pass to the value (-H "t) ;
the response time i is the time in microseconds necessary for the voltage produced in the other winding to start from zero, pass through a maximum and return to 10% of the value of this maximum. The invention provides magnetic materials of the ferrite type exhibiting,
on the one hand, substantially rectangular hysteresis cycles with a rectangularity coefficient (3 ", at least equal to 0.85 and, on the other hand, high resistivities (usually Q 103 ohm-cm).
Given their high resistivity, these materials exhibit negligible eddy current losses, which enables their use at high frequencies, with very low response times (T G 5 microseconds). Usually, said materials exhibit inductions at saturation B, of the order of 1500 to 4500 gauss, at 201, C approximately, coercive fields H i. between 0.2 and 4 #rsteds. The Curie point is greater than 1200 C.
The subject of the invention is a ferromagnetic material exhibiting a substantially rectangular hysteresis cycle. This material is characterized in that it contains at least iron sesquioxide and manganese oxide, in that its crystals have substantially constant dimensions in the same sample, between 10 and 100 microns, in that it has a negative magnetostriction coefficient, and in that it contains at least molecular percentages. approximately equal to the metal oxide (s) in the divalent state and the metal oxide (s) in the trivalent state.
The invention also relates to a method of manufacturing this material, characterized in that a homogeneous mixture of fine powders of metal oxides, comprising at least iron sesquioxide and a manganese oxide, is compressed, in which the sum of the molecular percentages of the oxides of trivalent metals is between 23 and 52 and that of the oxides of trivalent metals other than iron is at most equal to a quarter of the molecular percentage of iron sesquioxide and that the compressed mixture is subjected to a,
heat treatment at a temperature between 1200 and 1350 C, followed by slow cooling in an inert atmosphere, said heat treatment being adjusted so that the crystals of the final product have roughly constant dimensions in the same sample, between 10 and 100 microns.
In the most general case, the initial mixture of oxides can be symbolically represented below by: (x Fey03, y A103, z Cr. @ 03, u MnO, v MgO, s Zno, <I> t </ I> Cd0), where x, y <I> ... s and t </I> are the molecular percentages such that x + y + ... + s + t = 100. The molecular percentages of the oxides of this initial mixture advantageously satisfy the following conditions

<tb> OGy + zG0.25x
<tb> <I> 33Gu + vG77 </I>
<tb> OGvG20
<tb> OGs + tGl5 The rectangularity of the hysteresis cycle results, in the material according to the invention, from the negative magnetostriction coefficient. During the sintering and cooling of ferrite cores with a markedly negative magnetostriction coefficient, a large linear shrinkage occurs, of at least 8 0/0, and up to 30 0/0, and consequently , mechanical constraints which are essential for the properties of the final product.
It is well known that the magnetostriction of a mixed ferrite depends on the magnetostriction of each of the ferrites composing it.
Of all the ferrites, only iron ferrite or magnetic iron oxide Fe O - Fe20; 3 (ie Fe30,) has a positive magnetostriction coefficient, the other ferrites having a negative magnetostriction coefficient.
The material according to the invention, with a substantially rectangular hysteresis cycle, contains little or no divalent iron. In addition, there is substantially molecular equality between the oxide (s) containing metals in the trivalent state and the oxide (s) containing metals in the divalent state. It must be concluded that, in the material, part of the manganese is in the form Mn2O3.
. The chemical analysis confirmed, in fact, that the ferrites, whose hysteresis cycle has a substantially rectangular shape, are always oxidizing, as shown by the results of analyzes given in the table below, column 4. For under different starting conditions, the excess oxygen, hereinafter defined and indicated in column 4, would be different, since the lack of FeO would be such that it would no longer be formed. or less of Mn203.
Excess oxygen is defined as the amount of oxygen, expressed as a percentage of the total weight, that must be released for all of the manganese in a sample to change to the bivalent state. This excess of oxygen is determined by attacking the sample with hydrochloric acid in the presence of a determined quantity of ferrous sulfate in an inert atmosphere. Part of the ferrous sulfate is transformed into ferric sulfate, the concentration of which is determined.
From the quantity of excess oxygen, it is possible to calculate the molecular percentages of the various constituents, assuming that this excess oxygen causes a portion of MnO to pass to the state of Mn 2 O 3.
Column 9 of the table below shows that the percentage of molecules containing metals in the trivalent state is very close to 50, even for starting compositions containing only 25% of Fe, 0 ;;

It has been found that, while in a soft ferrite the grains are small, of dimensions less than 20 microns, the ferrites with a rectangular hysteresis cycle, according to the invention, have a homogeneous structure, and are formed. coarse grains with dimensions between 10 and 100 mi crons. These grains are separated from each other by joints of the order of a micron thickness.

The increase in iron content, due to the wear of the mill, being, for an average mill, about 0.8 molecules Fe.; 03 percent molecules of ground material, the compositions of Fe-03 after grinding must be increased by this quantity; Corrections would have to be made if a slower or faster wear mill was used.

The obligatory metal oxides in the mixture of oxides intended to form a ferromagnetic material according to the invention are iron sesquioxide and manganese oxide.
The addition of zinc oxide or magnesium oxide, within certain limits, has practically no influence on the rectangularity of the hysteresis cycle, but it makes it possible to act on other properties of the material. ferromagnetic, such as saturation induction, coercive field; the same is true of the substitution, for a part of the iron sesquioxide, of another trivalent metal oxide which makes it possible to increase the value of the coercive field.
If the initial mixture of oxides comprises zinc oxide, the molecular percentage thereof must be at most equal to 15, if the molecular percentage of the magnesium oxide is at most equal to 8, but if the molecular percentage of magnesium oxide is between 8 and 20, the molecular percentage of zinc oxide should be between 5 and 15.
In the event that the initial mixture of oxides does not contain zinc oxide and no oxides of trivalent metals other than iron sesquioxide, the molecular percentages of iron sesquioxides, manganese oxide and oxide magnesium must be between the following limits

<tb> vG1. It is understood that, in all the initial compositions given, the zinc oxide can be replaced, in whole or in part, by cadmium oxide without this substitution substantially modifying the properties indicated for the product. got.
It should be further understood that the molecular percentage of manganese oxide is conventionally related to the number of manganese atoms; consequently; in the following discussion, manganese oxide will conventionally be represented by MnO, although in practice different oxides can be employed, such as MnO 2, Mn, 30.3, etc.
The addition of a certain percentage of zinc oxide to a mixture of iron sesquioxide and manganese oxide which, as has been said, has no influence on the rectangularity of the hysteresis cycle , makes it possible to increase the induction B ", obtained for a given field H";
on the other hand, the addition of a molecular percentage of magnesium oxide, included between certain limits, which also has no influence on the coefficient of rectangularity <B> P., </B> dimi naked induction B ", but increases the coercive field H ,.", as shown in fig. 2 which represents the characteristics B ",, H.", and (3 ",, for H", = 2 oersteds,

<tb> (<SEP> curves in <SEP> discontinuous <SEP> line) It was observed that, under certain conditions,
a high squareness coefficient can be maintained by substituting up to 20% MgO for MnO.
In any case, the examples given in the remainder of the description showing that the presence of MgO is not necessary to obtain a high rectangularity coefficient.
It has been noticed, moreover, that it is possible, while maintaining the rectangularity of the cycle, to obtain a material having a high coercive field by substituting, for a part of the molecules Fe203, an equal number of molecules of other tri-valent metal oxides: Al ,, 03, Cr203. The effect is analogous to that of substituting a number of MgO molecules for an equal number of MnO molecules.
It has in fact been observed that, for an increasing molecular percentage of A103 substituted for the same percentage of FeO ,, the coefficient of rectangularity (3 ", remains practically constant, the induction B", corresponding to a given field Hm decreases and the coercive field H, ", increases.
The molecular percentage of A'203, which can be substituted for Fe,> 03, must therefore be limited, if the induction 13 ,,, must not have too low a value, especially if the ferromagnetic material already contains a certain amount of MgO molecules.
In fig. 3 are shown the hysteresis cycles recorded for an H "field, of 2 oersteds on four prepared materials, from mixtures of the following initial compositions

The influence of substituting a certain percent of chromium oxide Cr2O3 for the same percent of Fe2O3 is analogous to that of the substitution of Al2O3 for Fe203. <I> Manufacturing process </I> <I> Composition and nature </I> <I> of the oxides used </I> For the mixtures, iron sesquioxide Fe,> 03, manganese salt oxide Mn304 or another manganese oxide and, optionally, zinc oxide ZnO, aluminum oxide A120,1,
chromium oxide Cr2O3, obtainable from chromic anhydride Cr03, magnesium oxide MgO.
These oxides must be pure and the mixture must not. contain more than 0.5% impurities.
Silica (SiO2), barium oxide (BaO), lead oxide (Pb0), strontium oxide (Sr0), etc., are particularly harmful, as these impurities round the corners of the cycle.
The content of each of these oxides should be less than 0.05% in. weight.
The magnesium oxide optionally used is obtained from more or less hydrated magnesia, which is calcined at 500 ° C. in order to transform it into MgO.
<I> Grinding </I> The mixture of oxides is ground in an iron, ball, steel grinder, usually for 12 to 48 hours., With about double their weight of distilled water.
Grinding, stamping and heat treatment are not modified by the possible presence of oxide A1203 or Cr2O3.
When the oxides are subjected to grinding, the increase in the iron content, due to the wear of the grinder, being, for an average grinder, about 0.8 Fe20 molecules; per hundred molecules of ground material, the molecular percentages of F% 03 indicated for the compositions before grinding should be increased by this quantity to obtain the molecular percentages afterwards. grinding.
<I> Forging </I> The influence of the forging pressure is important. Cellerci must be large enough for the induction to saturate. of the finished product is high enough and, on the other hand, low enough for the shrinkage during sintering to be significant.
A pressure of about 5 tons per cc, which corresponds to linear withdrawals of about 15%, has given good results; we can go from 0.5 to 15.0 tonnes per cm2.
Fig. 4 forms the properties B ", (for H", = 2 mrsteds), (i ", and the shrinkage r as a function of the stamping pressure for the composition 46.8% Fez03, 32.8% MnO, 13.5 % MgO,
6.9 '() / o ZnO.
Fig. 5 represents, for this composition, the hysteresis cycles corresponding to different stamping pressures. Heat treatments The product, obtained as it has just been indicated, is subjected to a heat treatment lasting from two to six hours at a temperature between 1200 C and 1350 C, in pure nitrogen with 0 to 2 added. % oxygen by volume,
followed by slow cooling, carried out in about fifteen hours, in pure nitrogen.
To obtain the optimum properties, the temperature of the anneals must be adjusted experimentally for each composition.
In general, the more magnesium oxide MgO the ferrite contains, the more high temperature it will need to be annealed.
For a zero content of magnesium oxide MgO, very good results are obtained around 1250 ° C; for 10% MgO, one must anneal at around 1275 ° C and, for 16%, a temperature of 1300 C gives satisfactory results.
The curves in fig. 6 give the variations of the characteristics B ",, H ,.",, (3 ",, R", and K ", (for H", = 0.9 oersted), when the temperature varies from l220 to 1350 C, for a mixture of the following composition: 46.8% Fe., O3; 32.8 '/ o MnO; 13.5 0/0 MgO; 6.9 fl / o ZnO.
It can be seen that, for this ferrite, the optimum temperature is between 1275 and 1300 C. It will therefore be advantageous to anneal around 1290 ° C., the optimum temperature at which the dispersion in the properties is the lowest.
The ground powder can undergo, before stamping, a presintering between 9000 C and <B> 1 <I> 1 </I> </B> 00 C, then be ground again before stamping and final heat treatment.
The temperature of this pre-sintering must be adjusted so that the final shrinkage of the material is at least greater than 8.%, this shrinkage conditioning the stresses, and therefore the properties of squareness.
It has been observed that, for a mixture which, treated normally, exhibits good properties of rectangularity, presintering at too high a temperature (@_ 1200 C, for example), leading to shrinkages of the order of 40 / 0, gives materials that do not have a rectangular hysteresis cycle.

For applications in so-called memory magnetic recording devices, the ratio R "must vary as little as possible with temperature in order to have proper operation. The iron rites, objects of the present invention, have been particularly studied for this purpose. The rectangularity ratio R "varies very little with temperature.
