Dryer The present invention relates to a dryer for removing moisture from a medium, in particular from a refrigerant.
The presence of water in the refrigerant of a running compression refrigeration system is generally a source of failure of such systems. This failure can result from the freezing of the water in the expansion valve, a narrowed pipe or an opening controlled by a float valve, whereby the refrigerant flow is blocked and causes the formation of sludge and iron and / or copper salts as a direct reaction with water or as a result of the catalytic effect of the water becomes. The water in the refrigerant-operated refrigerant systems is generally removed by passing the liquid or gaseous refrigerant through a device which contains a desiccant.
These devices, which are in common use, have a container containing the desiccant which is held within the container by screens and / or other porous material disposed therein at each end of the container with fittings at the ends of such container to install the device in the liquid or suction line of a refrigeration system.
According to the invention, the dryer is characterized by a cylindrical container, a fitting which is detachably provided in the upper part of the container and is provided with inlet and outlet openings, an intermediate piece which is held in the fitting, a sieve at a distance from the upper and lower end of the container, a desiccant which is located between the two sieves, the sieves being provided with coaxial bores, a vertical tube which extends through these bores, the lower end of the tube opening into the bottom space of the container and the upper end of the pipe extends into the intermediate piece and is tightly connected to it, the intermediate piece being provided with an opening,
which connects a line for the medium to the interior of the vertical pipe via an inlet in the fitting, and the fitting is provided with an outlet which is connected to another line for the medium, the whole thing in such a way that the medium passes through the inlet in the fitting , the opening in the adapter and down through the vertical pipe, then up through the desiccant and through the outlet in the fitting.
The dryer according to the invention is very effective and relatively simple and can be easily installed in a pipe or removed from such a pipe.
Exemplary embodiments of the subject matter of the invention are illustrated in the accompanying drawing. 1 shows a vertical section through a dryer according to the invention for removing moisture from a refrigerant, FIG. 2 shows a vertical partial section of a dryer similar to that in FIG. 1, but with a fitting with sight glass, FIG. 3 shows a vertical section through a fitting as it is used with a dryer, but provided with an end cap, FIG. 4 shows a vertical section through a fitting with sight glass and with an end cap, also with sight glass,
5 shows a part of a vertical section through a dryer with a bypass fitting, FIG. 6 shows a section similar to FIG. 5, the bypass being in the flow position, and
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
7 shows a vertical section through a sieve device.
According to FIG. 1, the dryer has a container 18 in the manner of a cylindrical beaker which has an appropriately attached upper closure 20. A connecting nut 21 is provided at the upper opening of the container 18 and provided on the inside with a thread for receiving a connecting fitting 3. A seal 22 is sealingly between the fitting 3 and the nut 21. Above and below in the container 18 a sieve 11 and 15 is provided, which sieves 11 and 15 are provided with mutually coaxial bores and made of wire mesh, perforated sheet metal, glass cloth or the like exist.
Radially extending spiders 10 and 16 are fixedly attached to the top and bottom of the container 18 in order to hold a vertically extending feed pipe 12 with a bore 13 in place. The lower open end 12 a of the tube 12 communicates with a space 17 at the bottom of the container 18. The upper end of the pipe 12 extends into the lower bore 9 of the fitting 3 and sits tightly in an additional connecting piece 6 which is held in the fitting 3.
The desiccant 14, e.g. B. powdered silica gel, activated clay, calcium sulfate or the like, is filled between the upper sieve 11 and the lower sieve 15. The spring 23 is inserted into the space 19 above the upper sieve 11, is normally pressed against the sieve 11 and tries to press it against the desiccant 14.
The screens 11 and 15 screen out foreign matter and / or fine particles of the desiccant during the refrigerant flow without excessive pressure drop. The fitting 3 has an inlet 2 and, in alignment with this, an outlet 7, which can be connected to the refrigerant lines 1 and 8, respectively.
During operation, the refrigerant enters the fitting 3 from the line 1 through the inlet 2 and passes through the opening 4 in the connector 6 into the central part 5 of the fitting 3, where it passes through the connector 6 down into the central tube 12 in the dryer and is passed to the lower space 17 of the container 18, where the flow direction reverses, and up through the lower sieve 15, then through the desiccant 14, through the upper sieve 11, through the annular channel 9 inside the fitting 3 but outside the Connecting piece 6 and then through the outlet 7, which is connected to the refrigerant line 8.
The container 18 together with the built-in parts can be removed by unscrewing it using a wrench or other suitable tool and the refrigerant lines 1 and 8 can be short-circuited by placing a cap 35 on the fitting 3, as shown in FIG.
The dryer described can, as shown in FIG. 2, be provided with a sight glass 30 in the fitting 3, so that it is possible to visually check the flow of refrigerant into the dryer. A closure cap 45 provided with a sight glass 41 can also be provided, as shown in FIG. The fitting 3 can also be equipped with a sight glass 40 for observing the flow of refrigerant.
The dryer described can also be provided with a closure and bypass valve in the fitting according to FIGS. 5 and 6, so that when the valve is closed the container can be removed and replaced or exchanged for a fitting cap without interrupting the circulation of the refrigerant.
The dryer shown in FIGS. 5 and 6 has a fitting 82 which, aligned in a straight line, has an inlet opening 91 and an outlet opening 91a. The housing 88 is internally threaded to receive and retain a support member 87 which has an axial bore for receiving a rotatable valve stem 86. The end of the shaft 86 is also threaded and is rotatably seated in the valve disk 99 which has an axial bore which is threaded and wraps tightly around the end of the shaft. The fitting 82 has a valve seat 90 on which the valve disk 99 rests in its lowest position, as can be seen in FIG.
A guide element 83 is also provided which engages in a groove 94 'of the valve disk 99 in order to prevent the valve disk 99 from rotating during the vertical movement. The fitting 82 is sealed against the container 18 of the dryer by a seal 22. To close off the upper end of the valve, as shown in FIG. 5, an internally threaded removable cap 95 is provided.
As shown in FIGS. 5 and 6, the valve is constructed in such a way that the pipe 12 located in the middle of the dryer with a corresponding bore 13 at its upper end connects to an intermediate piece 94 which is permanently attached to the valve disk 99 which is located in the housing 88 can slide up and down.
When the valve disk 99 is seated on its upper seat 100, as FIG. 5 shows, the refrigerant enters the fitting 82 through the inlet opening 91 and passes through the opening 92 in the intermediate piece 94 into the central part 93 of the fitting 82, where it through the intermediate piece 94 down into the bore 13 of the central tube 12 in the dryer and from there to the bottom part of the container 18 where the flow reverses and up through the desiccant 14, the upper screen 11, through the annular space 95 in the fitting 82 and then flows through the outlet opening 91a.
When the valve disk 99 is on the lower seat 90, as shown in FIG. 6, the refrigerant passes through the inlet opening 91 into the fitting 82, flows over the valve disk 99, which prevents the connection with the pipe 12, and then through the Outlet port 91a of fitting 82.
Valve head 99, valve stem 86 and intermediate
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
Pieces 94 are moved from the open position to the closed position by turning the valve stem 86 counterclockwise, for which purpose the cap 95 must be removed.
Sometimes it may be necessary to briefly insert a filter or screen in the refrigerant flow to remove foreign matter from the refrigerant. The dryer shown in Fig. 1 can be made ready for this purpose in that the upper and lower sieves 11 and 15 and the desiccant 14 are removed from the container 18 and through a correspondingly long conical sieve 55 of the type shown in Fig. 7 be replaced. In the arrangement according to FIG. 7, the sieve 55 is firmly seated between the upper edge of the container 18 and an extension of the lower end of the feed tube 12, which is secured by a compression spring 50 which is located between the bottom of the container 18 and the lower end of the tube 12 is held in position. The screen 55 could also have another shape, e.g. B.
Cylindrical shape.
In order to make evacuation of the air from the dryer superfluous, if it is provided with a shut-off valve and bypass valve, the dryer can be supplied filled with refrigerant that is under low pressure and sealed from the outside.
The dryer can be inserted into the suction line of a refrigerant system between the evaporator and the compressor. In this case, the refrigerant may contain entrained oil. The dryer is therefore installed in the opposite position so that the oil flows to the compressor due to its own gravity.
The dryer described has a number of advantages over previous embodiments. The container can be exchanged by loosening just one screw connection. If a fitting with a closing and bypass valve is used, the container can also be replaced while the refrigeration system remains in operation. So there is no need to empty the refrigerant line. It is also possible to check the container for insertion into the refrigerant circuit without removing it.
When using a fitting with a sight glass, it is possible to place the flow indicator directly next to the dryer and thus obtain two advantages of the fitting: flow indicator and connection of the container. It may also be necessary to use a larger or smaller container instead of the existing one. By arranging the fitting and container as separate parts, it becomes possible to keep the total number of fittings and containers necessary for the required connections lower. By using an end cap on a fitting, the container can be removed from the fitting and the fitting can remain mounted on the refrigerant line in the event that a container with a cleaning screen has to be inserted.
By using a fitting cap, it is also possible to remove the container and leave the fitting in the line with the sight glass for indicating the refrigerant flow. By using the dryer in the refrigerant suction line, it can serve to protect the compressor directly from moisture and dirt. If a fitting is used to connect the dryer between the evaporator and the compressor, the dryer can be inserted, removed or replaced without the need to empty the pipe section.
The dryer described is not only used to remove moisture from a refrigerant. It can be used in any plant to remove moisture from any medium.
