Device for ironing fabrics The invention relates to a device for ironing fabrics.
Currently, ordinary cotton or asbestos blankets for ironing devices, such as ironing boards, are gradually being replaced by blankets coated with heat-resistant plastics and generally reflecting heat. In the early days of the use of such plastic coated blankets, it was found that the impermeable coating of the plastics material prevented the escape of steam formed during ironing of wet garments, thereby causing draft or shrinkage. resistance to the ironing operation, while the ironed clothes tended to remain a little damp, due to the partial condensation of a certain quantity of steam.
The solutions proposed, such as mechanical perforation of the coated fabric or porous coatings leaving the interstices of the fabric free, have not been entirely satisfactory.
The present invention provides a new improvement in this field, in that it eliminates all the disadvantages of the perforated coated fabric re-passers and gives rise to additional advantages, such as the possibility of re-passing more cotton fabric. lightweight and removal of crevices at the folds of the coating, especially after long periods of time, for example during storage.
The device according to the invention comprises a working surface serving as a support for the fabric during its ironing. It is characterized in that said surface is formed by a tight fabric provided with a re-garment comprising a solid and hard organic resin, the weight of this coating being between 10.2 and 47.6 g / m of fabric and its major part occupying the interstices between the threads of the fabric, without filling them \ completely, so that said coating has ventilation openings corresponding to the interstices of the fabric.
Although tightly woven cotton is the fabric to which preference will generally be given for ironing board covers, it goes without saying that other fabrics, such as rayon, partially acetylated cotton, can be used. , nylon, polyacrylonitrile, polyester and the like.
The weight of the resin coating per m2 of fabric is advantageously 10.2 to 40.8 g, preferably 10.2 to 30.6 and more especially 10.2 to 25.3 g.
It should be noted that ordinary coated fabric, on the other hand, is coated with more than three times or even more than five times said amount of solids, or even more, since the aim in this case is to remove the porosity and obtain a sufficient thickness of the coating to exclude any possibility of water penetration or leakage.
The organic resin of the coating is advantageously combined with a plasticizer and a mineral filler, preferably a reflective pigment. It is preferable that the resin is a material with high heat resistance and which, in the form of a film, is able to resist and not soften at temperatures of 300 C or even 3400 C, which allows In general, temperatures should be applied which are at least 551 ° C above those which would normally scorch the fabric used as the working surface of the ironing device. Organic resins in heat resistant film form are well known today and are in common use.
Preference is given to a number of products, which are substantially all based on thermosetting resins. The most common material includes a polyvinyl butyral resin base which can be crosslinked with phenol-formaldehyde, urea-formaldehyde, melamine-formaldehyde, glyoxal, or other types of thermoset resins.
Among the plasticizers which are compatible with polyvinyl butyral, mention may be made of: triethylene gly col di-2-ethyl butyrate, polymerized ricinoleic acid butyl ester, methyl ethyl ricinoleate, metoxy glycol acetylricinoleate, butyl cellosolve phthalate,
triglycol n-octoate, di-2-ethylhexoate, o-toluene sulfonamide, p-toluene sulfonamide, ethyl sulfonamide, methyl phthalyl methyl glycolate, butyl phthalyl butyl glycolate,
ethyl phthalyl ethyl glycolate, castor oil etc.
The mineral filler can for example be constituted by clay, diatomaceous earth, silica gel, calcium carbonate, magnesium silicate, metallic powders, such as aluminum, bronze, magnesium or cooking, etc.
It is advantageous that the fabric provided with its covering is covered with a thin coating of a silicone polymer, for example a polymethyl sili cone having a viscosity of about 200-300 centistokes at 38- C. The preferred coating weight limits in this case, 13.6 to 47.6 g per m³ of fabric treated, also include the silicone coating.
In general, the porosity of the work surface is about 5-15%, that is, about 5-15% of the total area of the fabric forms the pores, which is much less than in the uncoated fabric.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, part of the work surface of an embodiment of the device according to the invention. The fi-. 1 shows a plan view of a piece of the fabric constituting said surface, with its covering partially torn off.
The fi-. 2 shows a cross-sectional view, on a larger scale, of the part provided with the covering of the fabric shown in FIG. 1.
The fia. 3 shows a greatly enlarged plan view of a fragment of the tissue shown in fig. 2. In these figures, 1 denotes the fabric, which is a cotton ticking. The threads 1 'of the fabric are woven so that the upper surface of the fabric 1 has high points 3, 3', 3 "and low points 11, the latter being obtained by lowering a thread 12 through a thread 13 which crosses it. (Fig. 2) Between the threads of the fabric there are rectangular interstices 4 which give the fabric most of its porosity.
The high points 5 of the surface of the coated fabric 2 mainly comprise impregnated threads, on which only a very small excess of resin is deposited, the major part of this being in the low points 11 and in the interstices. 4 which are not filled completely, but only partially with solid organic resin, so as to leave small openings 7 serving for ventilation.
A greatly enlarged view of the coated fabric 2, as seen under the magnifying glass (fig. 3), shows bare high stitches 5, in which the individual threads are impregnated with resin, but are practically free of any excess. resin. On the other hand, clumps of resin are found in the low points 6 and in the interstices between the wires, leaving however the small openings 7. The dimensions of these openings appear to be exaggerated due to the fact that strong lighting comes from them. underside of the fabric.
The presence of these small openings is essential since they ensure satisfactory ventilation of the fabric. The coating contains 8.16% aluminum powder as a pigment. The flakes of the aluminum powder are not shown in fig. 3, due to the fact that each particle acts as a reflector of light, which would have produced a confused effect.
It will be seen in FIG. 3 that the small or vertures in the accumulations of plastic material in the interstices between the son are distributed in a pattern forming fairly regular squares. Partial filling of the interstices with plastic material produces a very smooth coated surface which will not form imprints on the fabrics which will be ironed, even if they are very light. It should be noted, however, that if the amount of solids per square meter is substantially less than 10.2 g, the fabric will not be adequately protected, especially at high points, so that the tendency to scorch will be in the region of. that of the uncoated fabric.
In order to determine the effectiveness of the device described, the following tests were carried out. An ironing board was lined with a cotton ticking provided with a coating comprising a heat resistant polyvinyl butyral resin and 8.16% by weight of aluminum powder as a pigment, as well as a light coating. silicone as described above.
The behavior of this embodiment of the device was compared with that of a board lined with a customary asbestos blanket containing about 20% cotton yarn as reinforcement.
A cotton sheet was immersed in water, drip dried, and ironed dry on each type of board using an electric iron set to the temperature suitable for cotton (260 ° C). Examination of the boards after ironing the sheet revealed that the board constituting the said embodiment of the device according to the invention was dry, while the board lined with asbestos was slightly damp. The total time required for meals for three items (men's sport shirt, lady's blouse, underwear) was as follows: Ironing device according to the invention 20 minutes; asbestos cover board 30 minutes.
It was found that fingerprints (marks) are made by the asbestos cover on the clothes during ironing. This did not occur during ironing using the device according to the invention. The percentage of heat reflected by each type of blanket was calculated using a radiometer and is 64,
6% for said embodiment of the device according to the invention and 61.5% for the asbestos board.
The russeting of the blankets was determined by placing a thermostatic controlled electric iron on the work surface of the boards under the conditions specified below, with the following results

It is not desirable to go below 42-14.
