Bellows device The present invention relates to a bellows device which can be used in particular for the suspension of a vehicle.
Pneumatic suspension devices are known for vehicles, in particular for heavy goods vehicles, which comprise a flexible bellows, for example of rubber or of a similar material, one end of which is fixed to an integral part. one wheel of the vehicle and the other end to the frame of the vehicle. The bellows contains pressurized air and thus constitutes an air spring intended to to absorb the shocks of the road. Shock absorbing devices are associated with the to bellows devices. The air pressure in the bellows is measurable and can be changed, for example depending on the load of the vehicle.
The device forming the subject of the present invention is characterized in that it comprises two axially spaced supports and an annular U part, made of an elastic material, the open side of which is directed radially towards the end. 'interior and the branches form a fluid-tight contact with said supports, the U piece comprising an internal reinforcement made of a coil of rope arranged to form at least one double layer, the rope of one layer crossing the cord of the other layer to form a trellis and the cord forming in each layer a series of loops progressing continuously around the U piece always in the Same direction,
each loop comprising two substantially diametrically opposed arcuate portions each extending to across or to near an edge of the U piece and alternating with parts covering the top and side walls of the part, said arcuate parts being long enough so that, upon inflation of the device, the edges of the U part tend to contract according to the diameter and to tighten the supports tightly due to the tension imposed on the rope.
The device according to the invention is particularly intended for the suspension of a vehicle, and in such a device one of the supports is arranged to be fixed to a normally unsprung part of the vehicle, while the other support is arranged to be fixed to the chassis or to a solid part of the vehicle.
In a particular embodiment, the bellows device comprises two axially aligned U pieces, one edge of each of them clamping a corresponding support and the other edge clamping an intermediate annular support. The outer supports and the intermediate annular support can have grooves at their periphery to receive the edges of the part-in U. The device to bellow may also include three or more U pieces, arranged to form a unit.
The drawing represents, by by way of example, an embodiment of the device, object of the invention. Fig. 1 is an axial section. Fig. 2 is a schematic plan view corresponding to FIG. 1.
In the embodiment shown, the bellows device, intended to constitute a suspension system for a vehicle, comprises two supports aligned and axially spaced, the 'one of these supports, 1, called the lower support, being attached to the axle casing of a wheel and the other support, 2 called the upper support , being fixed to the vehicle frame. These two supports are circular and present a cylindrical part 3 comprising, at its outer periphery, an annular groove 4 of substantially rectangular cross section.
Two flexible bellows 5 each comprise an annular body in the form of a pneumatic tire, made of a material similar to rubber, having an internal reinforcement made of a winding of a cord 6 </ B> and whose conformation is described later.
The edges 7 of the bellows 5 have a diameter slightly smaller than that of the base of the groove 4 in each support 1 </ B> and 2, and an edge 7a of one of the bellows 5 is fitted in the annular groove 4 of the support 2, and an edge 7b of the other bellows < B> 5 is housed in the annular groove 4 of the lower support 1. When said edges 7a and 7b are adjusted, they form with said grooves 4 fluid tight contacts. The other edge 7c of each bellows 5 is adjusted in the same way in a groove 4a formed in each end of an intermediate annular support 8, the latter having a circumferential rib 9 at its outer periphery between the grooves 4a.
The edges 7 of the bellows 5 are very flexible and stretch easily, which makes it possible to adjust them in said grooves 4 and 4a. The upper support 2 has a wise pitch 10 cooperating with a connector 11 communicating with a source of pneumatic pressure, not shown, allowing the device to be inflated. During inflation, the edges 7 of the bellows 5 contract according to their diameter so as to strongly tighten the supports 1 < / B> and 2 and the intermediate support 8. During operation, the to bellows device is compressed under the load, the edges 7 </ B > bellows 5 clamp the rigid supports 1, 2 and 8 of the device even more tightly, and this tightening is increased when the bellows are flexed due to road shocks.
As a result of the configuration given to the cord 6 in the reinforcement of the bellows 5, the latter are very flexible and can be extremely resistant if the 'we use a good quality rope. Steel cord reinforcement can be used for devices working under heavy loads.
The rope 6 is gradually wound around a mandrel having a winding surface in the form of a sphere, so as to to form a reinforcement 12 having edges 13 of equal diameter and made up of at least one double layer of rope 6, the rope 6a of one of the layers crossing the rope 6b of the other layer to form a trellis. Each layer comprises a series of loops 14 (fig. 2) equally spaced around the mandrel, which extend obliquely around the latter in a path constituting a geodesic and which are in tangential contact with the opposite edges 13 reinforcement in substantially diametrically opposed positions.
The reinforcement is then removed from the mandrel, then heated and molded with a vulcanizable composition containing natural rubber or other elastic substance, in order to vulcanize the composition and form the bellows 5. During the molding, the edges 13 of the reinforcement are moved axially inward, the crown part 15 is stretched and the string 6 is deformed so that the parts of the rope stretch in an arc around or near the edges ' s 13 with sufficient intensity to force these edges < B> to contract according to the diameter when the device is inflated.
It is not obligatory that the bellows have the shape of pneumatic tires, but they may have another convex shape, depending on the shape of the mandrel on which the reinforcement is wound and the mold in which it is treated.
