Process for the preparation of pyridinearboxylic acids The preparation of pyridinearboxylic acids is usually carried out by oxidation of 1'yridinhoniolo-en with nitric acid, nitric acid-sulfuric acid mixture, potassium peranganate, potassium or latrium dichromate in an aqueous phase.
The reaction products then have to be isolated from the aqueous, possibly strongly sulfuric or nitric acid-containing reaction mass, which in view of the considerable @ Vasser @ ös @ ich-] time of the pyridinecarboxylic acids and their tanphoteric nature requires expensive operations.
I: it was now. found. that under suitable conditions with a suitable oxidation catalyst pyridine homologues are catalytically oxidized with air in the gas phase to give the corresponding pyridine carboxylic acids. and can be isolated from the reaction mixture in a simple manner.
Admittedly, suggestions have already been made in this rubbing, especially in the American patent no. '3437938. In example 1 of this patent specification, a process is described in which fl-Pieolixi is oxidized to nicotinic acid over a catalyst consisting of silica gel and vanadium pentoxide at about 100 at a space velocity of about 1000.
This process has not led to a technical preparation of nicotinic acid. The reason for this is evident when one compares the process with that of the German patent specification 1r. 733298 compares .. Here, pyridine homologues in a mixture with air are passed over a catalyst which is completely analogous to the one described above at 380, with only the higher pyridixes being broken down to the lower ones.
A similar catalyst consisting of molybdenum acid precipitated on silica gel provides. from u- and f-pieolin about 40% pyridine and only about 30 / a nicotinic acid.
It therefore appears that both the catalyst and the working conditions in the processes mentioned are unsuitable for the preparation of pyridinearboxylic acids. The present method differs fundamentally from those described in both directions.
It has been found that the reduction of pyridinearboxylic acids to pyridines can be suppressed to a very large extent if the vanadixic acid precipitated on silica gel is strongly acidic activators such. B. Sehwefelsäu.re, phosphoric acid and especially potassium bisulfate incorporated, mid at temperatures below 350, Zwecl, - moderately below 300, preferably at about 260 to 270, works.
The present invention relates to. Consequently. a method for the preparation of pyridinearboxylic acids by passing a mixture of air with alkyl pyridines or with quinoline or with its derivatives alkylated in the pyridine nucleus over vanadium pentoxide ozvdationskatalvsa.toren applied to silica gel, which is characterized by the fact that catalysts are used, the acid Contain activators, and works at temperatures below 350.
It was also found that the nature of the silica gel has a considerable influence on the course of the reaction, and that wide-pore silica gels are far better carriers than narrow-pore gels. Furthermore, it proves to be favorable if one adds water vapor to the oxidizing air, the weight of which is several times that of the pyridine homologues, preferably about. 10 times that.
The space velocity, i.e. H. the volume of the gas flow set under normal conditions (760 mm Hg, 0 C) per hour and per catalyst volume is of course to be adapted to the other conditions, whereby it is expediently chosen so that not the entire Pvridinhomologe is converted, but a part, appropriate about 5-30% remains unchanged, which at room velocities of about 100-100,
preferably of about 200 and the above-mentioned low temperatures is the case.
Both reaction conditions and catalysts differ deninaeh wesent Lich from the previously described method and lead to the fact that, for. B. nicotinic acid from f-picoline or so-called aldehyde collidin can be produced in yields of 80-90% of theory.
The products obtained are very pure and can be used for further processing without further ado.
In the following examples, unless otherwise noted, the parts are parts by weight, the percentages are percentages by weight and the temperatures are, as in the preceding description, in degrees Celsius.
Example 1 In a mixture of 50 parts by volume of water, 25 parts by weight of potassium sulfate, 4.7 parts by weight of crystallized oxalic acid and 7.45 parts by volume of concentrated sulfuric acid, 4.1 parts by weight of ammonium metavanadate are added at about 50 with stirring, and the mixture is heated lan, sain to about 75, until a clear blue solution is formed.
The solution is poured onto 50 parts by weight of wide-pored silica gel, produced according to Fiat Final Report No. 1313, page 39.1-398, with a grain size of 1 to 3 mm and about? Left at about 50 hours. The grains are then dried at 80 and roasted in the air flow at about 260. After small amounts of pulverulent constituents that have arisen have been sieved through a sieve of 1 mm glass width, the catalyst is ready for operation.
80 parts by volume of this are poured into a contact tube which is immersed in a molten salt heated to 6: 5. An air stream of 19,200 parts by volume per hour is now passed through it, which previously passes through a mixture of aldehydeollidine and water heated to 48 °.
The gases emerging from the furnace are first cooled to about 50 in a cooler and then freed from unchanged collidine in a washing bottle with dilute hydrochloric acid. The resulting nicotinic acid separates out in the cooler in excellent purity. Under the specified conditions, 0.180 parts by weight of collidine and about 2 parts by weight of water evaporate every hour.
0.114 parts by weight of nicotinic acid are formed every hour. while 0.0-18 parts by weight of unchanged collidine are recovered in the washing bottle; the yield corresponds to 85% of theory.
Example.? If 20 400 parts by volume of air are passed per hour through the contact tube described in Example 1, which is filled with 80 parts by volume of the same catalyst and heated to 290, which is at '? Saturated with picolin and then passed through water heated to 65. was, then 0.192 parts by weight of li-pieolin and about parts by weight of water evaporate hourly.
In the cooler, 0.0550 parts by weight of nicotinic acid crystallize every hour, while 0.1165 parts by weight of i'-picoline is recovered from the exhaust gases by the @V aselic acid every hour. This corresponds to a yield of 5011 / o of theory.
If, in this example, the air is passed through a mixture of quinoline and water heated to 65 instead of ss-picoline and water, nicotine is also produced. Example 3 Is it passed through the example \? be written contact tube, which is at 265 "it is, every hour 499-00 parts by volume of air, which at 28 with.
y-picoline was saturated and then passed through water heated to 65, then 0.58e (lewielite parts y-picoline and about 5.8 parts by weight of water evaporate every hour .0585 parts by weight of y-picoline is recovered, which corresponds to a yield of 800/0.
