Method and device for applying metal coatings to metal substrates The invention relates to a process and a device for applying metal coatings to metal substrates in a vacuum.
Metal coatings are often applied to metal substrates with the aim of combining the properties of both metals. E.g. a metal characterized by corrosion resistance can be applied as a coating on a metal which is sought for its strength in order to obtain a strong, corrosion-resistant product, e.g. is the case when aluminum, zinc or tin is applied to a steel base. The coating process can also be used when a surface is required with valuable properties in terms of appearance, the metal that exhibits these properties but is expensive and the other properties of the metal in question do not require its use for the entire object .
This is e.g. B. the case for the precious metals gold, platinum and the like, the appearance of which is particularly appreciated ge and in which it is possible to reduce the costs associated with the production of objects with the desired appearance, by reducing a cheaper geres Carrier metal, e.g. Nickel silver, is used to which the precious metal is applied. Several methods can be used to apply the coating to the base. The way in which the cover is connected to the base and the type of bond between the cover and the base depends on the method chosen.
In addition to the quality of the bond, the quality of the coating itself is a variable factor that depends on the application method chosen. Another factor that varies with the procedure is the duration of treatment. Finally, the machinability of the coated end product also depends on the method chosen.
The choice of the process depends on the question of which of these properties should be most prominent in the coated product, whereby the price of the end product will also play a role, because the costs associated with applying the coating differ depending on the process .
The best known methods of applying a metal coating to a metal base and connecting it to it, which the skilled worker in this field has today, are the electrical coating process, the rice dipping process, the metal spraying process, welding and soldering However, disadvantages of this process must be accepted, for example it often happens that the quality of the connection is not perfect.
This is the case if a method is chosen in which mechanical forces or Van der Waals forces are the only ones that cause the coating to adhere to the substrate. The various physical properties of the coating metal and the base metal, e.g. B. Differences in the coefficient of thermal expansion, the flexibility, the hardness, etc., can easily lead to separation of the coating layer from the support when changing the physical conditions.
In other methods, the bond is determined by the extent to which the coating metal penetrates into the metal base or, if soldering, by the diffusion of an auxiliary metal both into the coating and into the base. In such cases the bond can be very good, but the machinability can be reduced by the thick layer of brittle alloy that forms between the metals, as it is impossible to control the formation of such brittle layers sufficiently. In addition, the process can be very slow.
With none of the processes mentioned, a product can be achieved in which the connection between the coating and the base is of the diffusion type, which is necessary for firm adhesion, the coating is dense and non-porous and easy processability by regulating the diffusion layer or layers between the coating and the base is possible, while the coating is still very quick.
The invention is a process that has all of the advantages discussed above. It is characterized in that the base metal is subjected to a treatment to remove adsorbed gases and oxidation products, the base metal being heated in a vacuum, and in that the heated metal is exposed to the vapor of the coating metal in a vacuum, the base metal at least initially the treatment with the steam has a temperature of at least 400 C, so that a diffusion of the coating metal takes place in the base metal.
With every coating process, the bond between the coating and the base becomes worse if adsorbed gas and vapor layers, which are always present, and the thin oxide skin, which also occurs frequently, are left on the surfaces to be coated. These layers are removed by the above-mentioned heating of the base metal in a vacuum, preferably in a reducing atmosphere.
However, this heating of the base metal in a vacuum before coating not only removes the adsorbed layers, but is also advantageous in other respects for the method according to the invention.
After the surface has been prepared for the application of the coating, the coating itself is applied. The method according to the invention has the effect that a diffusion bond is created between the coating and the base in the same time course in which the coating is applied or in part of it. The term diffusion bond is understood to be the bond that arises when the coating metal diffuses into the metal substrate so that - ideally - the two metals continuously merge at the boundary line.
The diffusion bond ensures a permanent and strong bond between the cover and the base. In order to achieve a diffusion bond at the same time during the overlay, it is necessary that the substrate has a high temperature during the application of the overlay. The high temperature for the base metal is essential because the speed at which the two metals diffuse into one another is dependent on the temperature and increases exponentially with temperature.
The appropriate temperature range for applying a specific coating to a specific base metal in such a way that a substantial diffusion bond is achieved in a short time depends on the metals used, since each metal has a characteristic diffusion rate at a given temperature. In a process carried out on an industrial scale, the speed with which the coating metal is applied should be high. You can z. B. wear an aluminum coating of 10 microns in five seconds.
In the first two seconds of the application process, the aluminum should diffuse into the base metal to such an extent that a strong bond is achieved. This rapid diffusion does not take place at temperatures below 550 C, at least for steel and copper. If the temperature is lower and the diffusion is slower, the aluminum will penetrate less and the connection will not be strong enough.
The base metal is first heated to a high temperature in a vacuum space with preferably a reducing atmosphere with a pressure of preferably not more than 0.1 mm, after which the coating metal is deposited on the base metal in a vacuum of preferably not more than 0.02 mm. The coating metal is in vapor form, while the base metal, at least at the beginning of the application process, still has a temperature high enough to cause the metals to diffuse into one another. As a result of this diffusion, alloying of these metals occurs, and a permanent strong bond between the metals is achieved.
It should be noted that the term alloy is used here to indicate the metal composition formed during diffusion, regardless of whether it is mixtures or chemical compounds of the two metals.
The formation of a diffusion bond in a short time is facilitated by the deposition of the metal coating from the vapor. This means that the coating metal is supplied in atomic or molecular form on the surface of the base metal and not in the form of a mass of relatively large dimensions, as is the case, for. B. would be the case when pressing the coating layer of a metal powder, even if the metal powder were very fine.
It can also be noted that as soon as a layer of the coating metal is deposited on the base metal, not only a diffusion of particles of the coating metal into the base metal, but at the same time also a diffusion of particles of the base metal into the coating takes place becomes.
The diffusion between the coating metal and the base metal should take place at least in the vicinity of the contact surface so that a firm connection is achieved. With regard to the appearance and protection against corrosion, however, it can be desirable that the content of base metal in the coating of the alloy at the contact surface gradually decreases in the direction of the surface, so that the pure coating metal is available on the surface. A coating of this type can also be produced by the method according to the invention.
This gradual change in the metal composition within the coating layer is achieved when the application of the coating takes place in a vacuum in such a way that the temperature of the base metal becomes lower during the deposition of the coating metal.
Under these conditions the rate of diffusion of the two metals will also decrease, since this is an exponential function of temperature. At the end of the application process, the temperature of the base metal should then be so low that there is practically no diffusion of the base metal into the outer layer of the coating.
On the other hand, it may be desirable that the entire coating layer consists of the alloy. In this case, the entire application process is carried out at such a temperature of the base metal that the atoms of the base metal diffuse through the entire coating layer. A similar result can also be achieved by repositioning the coated base metal after the coating metal has been applied it heats up for so long
until the base metal has diffused through the entire layer.
If one works in such a way that the surface of the coating consists of the pure coating metal as described first, when using certain metals it can be found that after the coating has been applied, the surface thereof does not have the desired gloss. The gloss can be improved by heating the coated metal again for a short time after cooling.
For the present process, in addition to the elements that clearly represent metals and their alloys, elements such as e.g. Boron and silicon into consideration. As coating materials come into consideration those substances that evaporate in a vacuum and can be deposited onto another material that can be kept at a sufficiently high temperature, where both materials have the property of being able to diffuse into one another.
It is clear that a process of the type described above is very suitable for modern continuous manufacturing methods. According to one embodiment, the method according to the invention can be carried out continuously by supplying the base metal in the form of a moving metal strip and heating the respective part of the strip to be treated and bringing it into contact with the metal vapor.
The continuous process can be carried out in a device consisting of a chamber, means to introduce the base metal into the chamber with the exclusion of outside air, means to generate a vacuum in the chamber, one or more sources arranged in this chamber for the vaporous coating metal, means for guiding the metal strip over this source or sources and also means arranged in the chamber to heat the moving metal strip before it is guided over the source or sources.
In a preferred embodiment of this device, the same is divided by a partition wall into two chambers, one of which is used for the preparatory treatment of the metal surface before the application of the metal and the second for the actual coating. The base metal goes directly from the first into the second chamber, so that the heating in the first chamber also serves to bring the base metal to the temperature that is desired to achieve the desired alloy when applying the coating metal in the second chamber .
After the metal strip has entered the second chamber at a high temperature, it cools down when the coating metal is deposited while it moves through this chamber to the winding device. The base metal to be treated is introduced into the Vorrich device in the form of a roll that can be wound from and wound up again after coating, after which the Ap parat is closed. The application of the coating metal in a vacuum is very quick, so that the tape can run through the device at high speed. From an economic point of view, the high speed at which the metal strip can run through the treatment device is of great advantage.
Another advantage of this diffusion-based process is that the formation of the diffusion layer can be precisely controlled. In the case of continuous production, this can be achieved by using the device described. This regulation is essential for a successful execution of the fiction, according to method, since in certain combinations of base metal and coating metal the intermediate layer formed is more brittle than the base metal or the coating metal itself. In such cases, the layer in question, if it is too thick, affect the formability of the coated metal. If z.
B. If a steel band is coated with aluminum and a significant part of the coating consists of an aluminum-steel alloy, the coating layer will break if the steel band is bent too much. In the present method, the depth of the layer consisting of this connection can be properly regulated. The degree of diffusion depends essentially on three factors, namely 1. the initial temperature of the base metal, 2. the duration of the treatment with the metal vapor while the base metal cools, 3. the speed at which the overlaying metal is deposited on the base metal .
In the present method, each of these factors can be precisely controlled. If it is assumed that the base metal moves linearly at a constant speed in the device described, the first factor, namely the starting temperature of the base metal, can be selected as desired by regulating the heat supply into the first chamber. The second factor, namely the treatment time of the base metal with the vapor of the coating metal when the temperature drops, can be regulated in that the second and further sources for the metal vapor are arranged at a smaller or greater distance from the first source.
If the evaporation sources are stationary, regulation is possible by putting the first or first source out of operation and only allowing evaporation to take place where the metal strip has already passed through part of the second chamber. The speed of application of the metal can be regulated by the temperature of the evaporation sources or by the speed at which the metal to be evaporated is fed to these sources.
In this way, the depth of the alloy layer and the thickness of the pure metal coating are completely in hand, and the method according to the invention is thereby the known methods, e.g. superior to coating steel with aluminum using the hot upsetting process.
The method and the device according to the invention are described below with reference to the drawing for an exemplary embodiment, namely for cladding a steel strip with an aluminum coating of 0.0062 mm.
All treatments can be carried out in a loading container 10 which is divided into two compartments 12 and 13 by a partition 11. A roll of steel strip 14 is rotatably disposed in chamber 12; the tape 15 is guided over the rollers 16 through the partition wall 11 into the chamber 13, where the tape runs over the rollers 17 and is attached to means 18 so that it can be rewound after the aluminum coating has been applied. While the metal is being applied, the steel belt runs at a speed of 30 m per minute.
The preparatory surface treatment of the steel strip takes place in the chamber 12. The tube 21 leads from this chamber to a vacuum pump, not shown in the drawing, which reduces the pressure in the chamber to 0.01 mm. A reducing gas, e.g. Hydrogen, introduced into the chamber 12 through a needle valve, the gas flow being controlled so that a pressure of about 0.05 mm is maintained in the chamber. After the strip has been guided over the rollers 16, it runs through the windings 23 of an induction heating device which heats the steel strip 15 to about 800.degree.
While the belt is still at this high temperature, it enters the chamber 13 through the partition wall. In order to facilitate the passage and to prevent mixing of the gas atmospheres in the two chambers, freely rotating rollers 24 and 25 are arranged in the partition wall 11 at such a distance that the metal strip fills the space between the rollers.
The band 15 entering the chamber 13 is still at a high temperature. Rows of evaporation sources 26 for the aluminum are arranged in this chamber. In the device shown, the distance between the first and last source is 6 m, and there are 20 rows of such sources arranged at a distance of 30 cm from each other. In each row of evaporation sources there are two such sources within a width of the steel belt of 30 cm. Each source vaporizes aluminum at a rate of 2 em3 per minute. The belt 15 runs over these evaporation sources at a distance of about 20 cm and cools down.
When the tape passes the evaporation sources near the partition wall 11, an alloy of aluminum and iron will form, but as the tape 15 moves away from the partition wall, the temperature will be lower and thereby the rate of diffusion of the aluminum and iron will be lower, so " that at the evaporation sources that are furthest away from the partition wall 11, no more alloying will take place and the aluminum is deposited in the outer layers of the coating in a pure form. The temperature of the strip is after it is the last Evaporation source has passed 300-350 C.
The precipitation of the aluminum in the chamber 13 takes place in the Va kuum, which is generated by a second vacuum pump, also not shown in the drawing. The chamber 13 is connected through the pipe 27 to this vacuum pump, which keeps the pressure in the chamber at a value not exceeding 0.02 mm.
After the steel band has passed the evaporation sources, it is clad with an aluminum coating that still has a matt appearance. It was found that the matt surface can be converted into a reflective surface by heating the layer to <B> 670 '</B> C, the melting point of aluminum, for a short time. In the drawing, he heating means 28 are indicated for this purpose, through which the belt 15 runs after the application of the aluminum miniumüberzuges. The funds 28 be available from resistance heaters 31 from Wolf ram, supported by reflective metal surfaces 32.
After the metal has been applied and the re-heating process, the steel strip is rewound. It is necessary to artificially cool the tape before winding it up. The metal becomes brittle if the winding takes place at a temperature above 150 ° C. To cool the coated strip, it is allowed to run over a number of guide rollers 33 which are cooled with water. These are, at least on one side, loaded by spring pressure or a Ge weight. After this last treatment, the tape 15 runs over rollers 17 to the winder 18.
A similar procedure can be used for applying other metals. You can z. B. cover copper tape with aluminum in this way. With this combination, the coating layer can be converted into aluminum bronze by heating it to around 700 C after the metal has been applied.
You can precipitate copper on steel in a similar way, with certain changes from the implementation just described from. The steel strip should be inserted into the chamber for applying the copper at a higher temperature. For this purpose, you can use the same induction coil as for coating with aluminum if you reduce the speed at which the steel strip runs to 15 m per minute. In this case, the steel strip will enter the second chamber at a temperature of around 900 ° C. In order to produce a coating of 0.0063 cm, the amount of evaporated copper should then be reduced to 1 em3 per minute per source.
The surface of the coating produced must be heated to about 1050 C in order to be shiny.
According to the invention, other metals than those specified can also be used, but then other temperatures, evaporation rates and the
