Process for the preparation of new dyes The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of new dyes of the tetraazaporphin series of the formula
EMI0001.0004
in which Me is a metal with an atomic number from 24 to 29, including both numbers, and R1, R2, R3, R4, R5, Rs, R7 and R $ hydrogen, a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl,
Designate aryl or ara.lkyl radical or a -CH2X radical, with individual or all pairs of substituents R1 and R2, R3 and R4, R5 and R., and R7 and Re being linked to one another to form a substituted or unsubstituted ring can, provided that at least one -CH2X radical,
where X represents an isothiouronium group, is bonded to a carbon atom which is a member of an aromatic ring or of the tetraazaporphine ring.
It has generally been shown that at least two -CH, X groups are required to give the dye satisfactory solubility in water. Dyes of the class defined above with at least two -CH2X groups represent the preferred group of dyes according to the invention.
According to the invention, the new dyes are produced by a process which is characterized in that a tetraazaporphin of the formula:
EMI0001.0040
in which Me, R1, R2, R3, R4, R5, R6, R7 and R8 have the above meaning, with the proviso that at least one —CH, Y radical, where Y represents a halogen atom, is bonded to a carbon atom ,
which is a member of an aromatic ring or of the tetraazaporphinring, treated with substituted or unsubstituted thiourea.
The treatment of the halomethyl derivative of tetraazaporphins with substituted or unsubstituted thiourea is carried out by heating the reactants with one another in the presence of water, adding a water-miscible liquid, e.g. B. acetone, in which the dye = is soluble, the dye is filtered off and drying is carried out.
The chloromethyl or bromomethyl compounds used, for example, as starting materials for carrying out the process according to the invention can be prepared by heating the corresponding tetraazaporphin compound with a chloromethylation or bromomethylation agent, that is to say with a compound which is used in practice or according to information in the literature, is suitable for
to introduce chloromethyl or broin methyl groups into aromatic nuclei, such as. B. monochlorodimethyl ether, sym - dichlorodimethyl - ether, monobromodimethyl ether or sym-dibromodimethyl ether, or a substance or substances. which form one of these compounds in the reaction mixture, such as.
B. Formaldehyde or polymers thereof, for example paraformaldehyde, together with aluminum chloride or a hydrohalic acid.
The stable metal tetraa.zaporphine used for chloromethylation or bromomethylation are those that contain copper, nickel, cobalt, iron, manganese or chromium as coordinated metal. The chloromethylation or bromomethylation can genmethylierungsmittel in the presence of one of the reaction media mentioned in British Patent No. 689153 for the reaction of phthalocyanines with Halo, z. B.
in the presence of cone. Sulfuric acid, chlorosulphonic acid, methylsulphuric acid or dimethyl sulphate. Usually, however, you will preferably work in the presence of aluminum chloride to carry out the chloromethylation or bromomethylation.
If the reaction is carried out in the presence of aluminum chloride, it is usually advantageous to add a tertiary amine, which itself is not subject to chloromethylation or bromomethylation, i.e. an amine that has no aromatic nuclei contains the benzene or naphthalene series with unsubstituted hydrogen atoms or other groups that are reactive towards the chloromethylation or bromomethy agent, such as. B.
Hydroxyl groups. So z. B. triethylamine or pyridine can be used, while dimethylaniline or triethanolamine cannot be used. Optionally, a niehtwässriges, inert Ver diluent such. B. nitrobenzene, are added.
The corresponding tetraazaporphin derivatives can in turn be prepared from the corresponding dinitriles, dicarboxylic acids or the functional derivatives of the latter according to the processes described in British Patent Nos. 686395, 688768, 689387, 689388 and 689389.
Examples of halogen methyl derivatives of tetraazaporphins which are suitable as starting materials for the present process are: mono-, di-, tri- or tetra-chloromethyl derivatives of copper-tefra- a.zaporphin, nickel-hexamethy-1-monobenz-tetraa .zaporphin, nickel - tetramethyl - dibenz- tetraazaporphin,
Nickel-octaphenyl-tetraaza-porphine, cobalt - tribenz - monocyclohexeno-t.etraaza.porphin, nickel-tricyclohexeno-mono-benzetraa.za, porphin, Nieliel-dimethyl-tribenz-tetraazaporphin and nickel-dibenz-dicyclo-hexeno-tetraazaporphin. If necessary, compounds containing more than 4 halomethyl groups can also be used as starting materials.
Examples of suitable substituted or urisubstituted thioureas that can be used for (the process according to the invention who can be thiourea, N-methylthiourea, N-phenylthiourea, N, N'-dimethylthiourea, N, N-dimethylthiourea, N, N, N'-trimethylthiourea and tetramethylthiourea.
The new tetraazaporphin derivatives are, provided they contain at least two isothiouronic groups, soluble in water with the formation of bright reddish-blue to green solutions, from which cotton or other textile materials in bright reddish-blue to green shades of very good fastness to washing treatments and can be colored. These shades are generally much redder than those with. the corresponding phthalocyanine derivatives are obtained.
The new compounds are particularly suitable for textile printing processes. Those of the new compounds which contain cobalt as a coordinated metal can be vat and applied to cotton or other cellulose fibers as vat dyes. If these compounds are mixed with water-insoluble cobalt If mixed with tetra.aza.porp'Zinen or cobalt phthalocyanines, vat mixtures are obtained which are applied in a similar manner as vat dyes.
