EMI1.3
où R est un radical alcoyle ;

<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

where R is an alkyl radical;

where R1 is a lower alkyl radical or with a salt of such an imino-ether. The products obtained are synthetic antibiotics, some of which are known and others new.
The two numerical examples which follow relate to two embodiments of the method according to the invention.
Example I: Preparation of L - (-) - trans-2-phenyl-4-carbethoxy-5- (p-nitro-phenyl) -oxazoline. 100 g of p-nitrobenzoic aldehyde and 120 cm 3 of ethyl glycocollate were mixed. The mixture was stirred for about a minute and about 500 cms of ether was added thereto. The solution was then brought to the boil in a water bath and then left to stand for 24 hours at a temperature of 50 C. The DL-threo-ss precipitate was filtered off and washed with ether. - (p-nitro-phenyl) -serinate ethyl thus formed. After recrystallization from ethyl acetate or dioxane, a pure product was obtained, melting at 130 - 131 ° C.
On the other hand, the ethereal mother liquors were evaporated in vacuo and there was thus obtained an additional amount of ethyl DL-threo- (3- (p-nitro-phenyl) -serinate.

The reaction that occurs during this operation can be schematized as follows:
EMI2.1
10.15 g of the racemic prepared above were taken which were suspended in 75 cm3 of water at about 55 ° C., to which were added 7 cm3 of commercial lactic acid at about 70% in the form of 'enantiomorphic L - (+), exhibiting a specific optical rotation of [a] # = -2.3 (2) (c = 2.6.1n NaOH).
The mixture was stirred until the reagents were completely dissolved, then, if necessary after priming with a crystal of L-lactate of D-threo-ss- (p-nitro-phenyl)-ethyl serinate, the mixture was taken up periodically. stirring at room temperature (about 200 C) for at least three hours. The crystals formed were collected and filtered off; after 2 recrystallizations in water, pure ethyl D-threo-ss- (p-nitro-phenyl) -serinate L-lactate was obtained, melting at 134-135 C; MD # - 4.5 (2) (c = 4, methanol), with a yield of 1.7 g.
The mother liquors resulting from the above operations were combined and treated with a concentrated ammonia solution to approximately pH 10. A precipitate of ethyl DL-threo-ss- (p-nitro-phenyl) -serinate is formed which is enriched in the enantiomorph L - (+) due to the previous operation. 1.5 g of ethyl DL-threo-ss- (p-nitro-phenyl) -serinate were added to this precipitate and the mixture was suspended in 70 cm3 of water brought to about 55 C, and the mixture was treated with 7 cm3 of commercial lactic acid at approximately 70%, enriched in enantiomorph D - (-) and exhibiting a specific optical rotation MD # = + 2.8 (2) (c = 2.2, ln NaOH).
The mixture is stirred until complete dissolution, then if necessary after priming with a crystal of D-lactate of L-threo-ss- (p-nitro-phenyl) -serinate, stirring is periodically resumed. at room temperature for at least 3 hours. The crystals formed were collected and filtered off. Finally, 3 g of L-threo-ss- (p-nitro-phenyl) -serinate D-lactate having a melting point of 133-134 C were obtained; [a] #D = + 4.0 (20) (c = 4, methanol). The mother liquors of crystallization were taken up again and they were treated with a concentrated ammonia solution up to approximately pH 10.
A wet precipitate of ethyl DL-threo-ss- (p-nitro-phenyl) -serinate was formed, which was enriched by the previous operation to enantiomorph D - (-). 2.3 g of ethyl DL-threo-ss- (p-nitro-phenyl) -serinate were added to this precipitate and the mixture was suspended in 70 cm3 of water brought to about 55, and the mixture was treated with 7 cm3 of commercial lactic acid similar to the previous one but enriched in enantiomorph L - (+) and having a specific optical rotation [a] # 0 = -2.3 D (2o) (c = 2 , 6.1n NaOH).
The mixture was stirred until complete dissolution, then if necessary after preliminary initiation with a crystal of D-threo- (3- (p-ni-tro-phenyl) -serinate L-lactate, the mixture was taken up again. periodically stirring at room temperature over at least three hours. The crystals formed were collected, filtered off. This operation finally provided 2.6 g of D-threo-p- L-lactate (p ethyl-nitro-phenyl) -serinate having a melting point of 132 - 134,) C; [a] n = -4 () (2o) (c = 4, methanol).
By repeating the above operations several times in a row and each time separating the threo-p- (p-nitro-phenyl) -serinate from ethyl opti-

cally active mother liquor to which is added a proportion of DL-threo-ss- (p-nitro-phenyl) - ethyl serinate to complete its weight to 10.15 g, can be isolated alternately at each operation about 2, 8 g of D-threo-ss- (p-nitro-phenyl) -serinate ethyl L-lactate and L-threo-ss- (p-nitro-phenyl) -serinate ethyl melting both at about 133-134 C.
On condition that care is taken to use alternately lactic acid enriched in enantiomorph D - (-) then L - (+), these resolution operations can be continued indefinitely.
The two optically active lactates thus obtained can be purified by recrystallization from water, the melting point then being 135 -136 C; [a] # 0 = -5 (2) (c = 4, methanol). In order to prepare the optically active oxazoline derivative, 2.3 g of L-threo-ss- (p-nitro phenyl) -serinate D-lactate obtained as described above were taken therein. added 1.3 g of ethyl iminobenzoate hydrochloride, 2.5 cm3 of ethyl iminobenzoate and about 3 cm3 of ethyl acetate. The mixture was stirred, warmed slightly, for example to around 50 ° C., for ten to fifteen minutes in a water bath, after which anhydrous ether was poured into it.
After filtration of the precipitate, the filtrate was evaporated on a water bath and the residue taken up in alcohol. The crystals of L - (-) - trans-2 phenyl-4-carbetoxy-5- (p-nitrophenyl) - oxazoline obtained exhibited a melting point of 113 ° C. after recrystallization from methanol.
This last reaction can be represented schematically by the following equation
EMI3.19
Example 11: Preparation of DL-trans-2-phenyl-4-car-bethoxy-5- (p-nitro-phenyl) -oxazole. The reaction between p-nitro-benzaldehyde and excess alkyl glycocollate can be carried out in several stages, as follows. 5 g of p-nitro-benzoic aldehyde were suspended in 100 cm3 of dry ether. 3 cc of ethyl glycocollate was added to the ethereal suspension.
After standing for 48 hours at room temperature, the ether is evaporated off and the ethyl N- (p-nitro-benzylidene) -glycocolate crystallized. After crystallization from dry alcohol, this compound had a melting point of 840 C.

The reaction can be schematized as follows
EMI4.1
1.2 grams of this compound and 0.8 grams of p-nitro-benzoic aldehyde were dissolved in 15 cm3 of dry alcohol. After standing overnight, half of the alcohol was evaporated and the ethyl erythro-N- (p-nitrobenzylidene) -ss- (p-nitro-phenyl) -serinate crystallized out. This compound recrystallized from alcohol exhibited a P.F. of 144 C.
The reaction can be schematized as follows
EMI4.4
This same compound can also be obtained according to the known method which consists in causing 2 gram molecules of p-nitrobenzoic aldehyde to act on one to two gram molecules of ethyl glycocollate in an alcoholic medium. 1 g of the above intermediate was taken and treated with 2.5 cm3 of ethyl glycocolate. The mixture turned green; after standing, it was added with ether. The ethyl DL-threo-ss- (p-nitro-phenyl) -serinate which precipitated was filtered off and washed with ether; it melts at 125) -126) C.
The reaction can be schematized as follows
EMI4.13
In order to convert ethyl DL-threo- (ss- (p-nitrophenyl) -serinate into its hydrochloride, it is subjected to the action of gaseous HCl in an alcoholic suspension of this compound.
To form the oxazoline, 2 g of DL-threo-ss- (p-nitro-phenyl) - ethyl serinate hydrochloride was taken per 2.5 cm3 of ethyl iminobenzoate and 2 cm3 of acetate d 'ethyl. The mixture was stirred for 10 to 15 minutes in a water bath followed by the addition of anhydrous ether. After filtration of the precipitate, the filtrate was evaporated in a water bath and taken up in alcohol. The obtained DL-trans-2-phenyl-4-carbethoxy-5- (p-nitro-phenyl) -oxazoline crystals melted at 85- 87o C.
