3-Dialkyl- xanthine mit Acetalen von entsprechenden Halogenaldehyden und anschliessende Hydro lyse bzw. mit entsprechenden Halogenketonen leicht herstellen. Die Reduktion der 1,3-1)i alkyl-7-oxoalkyl-xanthine lässt sich mit be friedigender bis guter Ausbeute mittels Lithiu ,malurniniumhydrid, beispielsweise in Äther, ausführen.
In den nachfolgenden Beispielen bedeu ten die Teile, soweit nichts anderes vermerkt ist, Cewiehtsteile; diese verhalten sich zu V olumteilen wie g zu em3. Die Temperatur angaben beziehen sieh auf Centigrade.

Das abgenutsehte und mit Wasser ge- wasehene rohe Aeetal wird in verdünnter Salzsäure suspendiert. und unter Rühren auf dem Wasserbad eine Stunde erwärmt, das ge bildete 1,3-Diäthyl - 7 - (f3- oxo-ätlry l)-xanthin wird in Äther aufgenommen,
die Ätherlösung mit frisch geglühtem 1Iaonesirriristrlfat gut ge trocknet. und mit ?',5@'Teilen Lithi-Lam:alrrminiuni- hy drid, wie im Beispiel 1 angegeben, redu ziert, wobei man 1,3-Diäthyl=7-(ss-oxy-äthyl)- xa.nthin mit Snrp. <B>131</B> bis 133 erhält.
