Adhesive application device It has long been known that thermoplastic adhesives form good binders. They harden quickly what is special. Advantage means when the adhesive is applied gradually and the parts to be bonded are then connected immediately, and the adhesive bond obtained is very strong. Furthermore, the selection of the constituents from which thermoplastic adhesives can be composed is so great that a corresponding adhesive composition can easily be produced for a given purpose.
Nevertheless, the widespread use of these adhesives has posed certain difficulties in that the usually solid thermoplastic adhesive cannot be melted as quickly as necessary for its use without its quality being lost. Usually thermoplastic adhesive is melted in a heated container. However, since the melting of the adhesive mass requires quite a period of time, the start of daily work is considerably delayed. Furthermore, the daily heating of the adhesive leads to a loss of its adhesive strength.
It has now been proposed to deliver thermoplastic adhesives in strand or rod form, since they can then be easily kept in stock and the amount to be used can be melted quickly. However, it has been found here that the amount of heat which these adhesive rods could supply to melt the required amount in each case without the use of excessively high temperatures was limited.
The present invention relates to an application device suitable for the use of thermoplastic adhesive in strand or rod form with a feed gear for advancing the solid adhesive strand, in which the aforementioned disadvantage is eliminated.
The device has a heated housing with a recess in which a disk is rotatably mounted so that the side surfaces of the disk bear against the housing and transfer heat from the housing to the disk, and with a channel which extends from an insertion opening of the Housing extends along part of the disk periphery,
the rotational movement of the disk contributes to the introduction of solid adhesive into the channel and to the continued melting of this adhesive as it moves forward in the channel.

The invention is applied, for example, to a folding machine that has a support arm 14 (FIG. 1). A work table 18 is attached to the arm 14. An upper part 20 of the machine extends see over the support arm 14. The machine has the following tools known in folding machines: At the outer end of the arm 14 there is a block 24 which guides the workpiece and bends the workpiece edge part upwards to be folded over, with one on Upper part 20 mounted guide finger 28, the width of the edge part to be folded over be true. The tools also include a fold 30 which folds over the bent workpiece edge part against a pusher 32. Here, the fold 30 moves upwards, and a clamp (not shown) holds the workpiece firmly on the table 18.
A hammer 36 and an anvil 38 cooperate in a known manner in order to hammer down the folded edge part and then gradually push the workpiece in front of the block 24. A drive shaft 42 provides the anvil 38 and the hammer 36 with preliminary thrust movements via a toggle lever (not shown), the bolt connecting the arms of the toggle lever being adjustable in order to vary the length of the advance movements. The tools also contain a knife 40, which is operated under the control of the worker and cuts into the workpiece at highly curved points.
In order to change the size of the distance between the pusher 32 and the folder 30, the pusher 32 is attached to the lower end of a carrier 240 (Fig. 1) which is pivotably mounted on a plate 242. The plate 242 is connected to the machine head 20 adjustable. A channel 241 is formed in the carrier 240, which connects an outflow opening in the housing 312 with a channel 300 in the pusher 32, so that the pusher 32 also forms a nozzle. The housing 312 serves as part of an adhesive feed device.
In an approach 260 (Fig. 4) at the front end of the plate 242, a pivot pin 261 which sits in one end of a link 262 is supported. A tenon screw 265 connects the handlebar 262 to an extension 267 of the carrier 240. At the rear end of the plate 242 two shoulders 264, 266 are formed which form a tilting bearing for the carrier 240. This bearing be available from a U-shaped bracket 270 (Fug. 3), which can be pivoted about the axis of a shaft 272 mounted in the lugs 264, 266. Arms 274 on the bracket 270 carry a pivot pin 276 which is inserted through a set at 278 of the carrier 240.
A handle 2S0, which is attached to a rod 292, is pulled down to hoelise the trigger or the nozzle 32 and the carrier 240 about the axes 261, 272. The rod section 282 also carries an arm 284. A roller 286 is located at the outer end of the arm 2g4, under the link 262.
The nozzle 32 is raised by the handle \ _ 'S0 against the pressure of an adjustable spring 29, 9 which rests on a rod 290. The lower end of the rod 290 is. tapped to handlebar 262, and the rod top extends through plate 294 which is pivotally connected to an upright arm 298 of plate 242 at 296 rides.
The nozzle 32 has. a hollow extension 304 in which a heating element or a heating cartridge is mounted. The heating element always keeps the temperature of the nozzle at a predetermined level. Furthermore, a heating element 306 (Fig. 1) is arranged accordingly in channel 241 of Trä gers 240. The aforementioned housing 312 is attached to the carrier 240 and has an insertion opening 316 (FIG. 5) into which the thermoplastic adhesive in the form of a rod or a strand A is inserted through a pre-lifting device. The front thrust device is carried by a heat-insulated component 318 (FIG. 8) which is attached to the housing 312.
Heating elements 320 in the housing 312 are under the control of an adjustable thermostat 322 and keep the housing at a temperature of approximately 150 G.
A chamber in the lower end of the housing 312 contains a gear pump 323 (FIGS. 1 and 5). As can be seen from FIG. 1, the gear pump conveys adhesive through an outflow opening 330 which opens into the channel 241. The gear pump is driven by a gear 334 that sits on shaft 272. Between the arms of the bracket 270, a hyperboloid gear 336 (FIG. 3) which meshes with a gear 338 on a shaft 340 is fer ner on the shaft 272. The shaft 340 is actuated by the main drive shaft 42 of the machine via a toggle lever which corresponds to the toggle lever in the hammer drive.
The strand-like adhesive is melted in the following manner, without applying excessive heat, within a limited space, so that when the machine is used, there is always enough liquid adhesive in the lower end of the housing 312: In a recess of the housing 312 is a power-driven disk 342 (FIG. 8) on a shaft 343. Furthermore, a gear 351 is fastened on the shaft 343. The gear wheel 351 is actuated by the gear wheel drive of the pump 323 in such a way that the speed of rotation of the disk 342 is greater than the speed of movement of the adhesive.
The housing parts on both sides of the recess rest on the disk 342, as can be seen from FIGS. 6, 7 and 8, so that heat is transferred from the housing to the disk by conduction.
A channel 344 (FIG. 7) with a rectangular cross-section runs through the housing 312 around part of the disk periphery, that is, for example by 180 (FIG. 5) due to the thickness of the adhesive strand used. As shown in FIG. 5, a straight channel 346 connects the insertion opening 316 with the channel 344. The channel 346 is round when viewed in cross section (FIG. 6) and runs tangentially to the disc 342 (FIG. 5). The channel 344 is progressively reduced in size towards its lower end, as can be seen from FIG. 5, so that the distance between the periphery of the disk and the housing at the lower end of the channel is only approximately 0.22 mm.
Thus, the strip A must be completely melted before it reaches a chamber 313 in the lower end of the housing from which it is passed on by the pump. The right end of the disc 342 absorbs heat from the housing (FIG. 5) and transfers this to the adhesive in the channel 344 on the other side of the disc.
Since the disk is repeatedly heated up when it moves past the housing part, in particular the right-hand disk part, the melting process is also significantly accelerated without requiring high temperatures. When the channel 344 is filled with adhesive, a jam occurs which prevents the introduction of further adhesive into the insertion opening 316 by the rod advance mechanism.
The friction between the disc periphery and the partially melted adhesive helps pull the solid strand of adhesive off an IT tape. 348 (Fig. 8) into the housing, the disc then further mixing the components of the adhesive after it has melted. By increasing the speed of rotation of the disc, the temperature of the disc can also be increased,
and the speed of rotation can be high enough to accommodate all of the Melting to provide the necessary heat. A tube 347, which is in alignment with the channel 346, protrudes from the insertion opening of the housing 312 and receives heat from the housing. As already mentioned, the temperature in the housing is usually 150. However, since tube 347 is air cooled and is sufficiently thick, the temperature in the tube when the device is idle is usually about 98; When using the device, the tempera ture falls to about 85, since the cold adhesive material strand absorbs part of the heat of the pipe.
The tube must always be warm enough to be able to pull the adhesive strand or the adhesive rod easily under the train of the Seheibe 342 through the tube; however, it must not be so warm that drops of adhesive are already forming at the inlet end of the pipe. In order to facilitate the introduction of the adhesive rods or strands into the tube 347, the outer end of the tube is somewhat expanded, as can be seen from FIG. 5.
A friction drive, which is mounted on a carrier 550 and can slide in the event of a jam, is used to push a strand of adhesive into the housing 312. The carrier 550 is connected to the component 318 (FIG. 8) and has a bearing 552 in which a sleeve 554 is rotatable. On the sleeve 554 sits a corrugated pre-lifting roller 555. A bent arm 558, which carries a bearing for a chain wheel 560, is connected to a T-shaped extension 556 of the sleeve 554. The sprocket 560 is rotated via a chain 562 through the gear train of the pump 323. One arm of an angle lever 568 (Fig. 5) mortised to the carrier 550 carries a lower, also corrugated Vorsehubrolle 570.
The free arm of the angle lever 568 forms a handle 572, which enables the lower feed roller 570 to be pivoted out when a nice adhesive strand A is introduced. The roller 570 is pivoted out against the train of a spring 574. A toothed wheel 586 on the sleeve 554 meshes with a toothed wheel 588 on the feed feed roller 570, so that both rollers are rotated at the same speed in opposite directions. A block 580, in which a tube 582 is mounted, is also seated on the T-shaped extension 556.
The tube 582 serves as a guide for the strand A, see after the housing 312, the outlet end of the tube 582 being supported at some distance from the tube 347. Recesses in tube 582 allow the pusher rollers to engage the adhesive strand.
The friction drive of the feed rollers consists of two prongs 590 on the hub of the chain wheel 560. These prongs 590 lie in a notch in a ring 592, which is held by the head part 594 of a rod 596 in engagement with the side surface of the gear 586. The rod 596 extends through the bluff 554, and an adjustable spring 598 holds the rod head portion 594 against the ring 592.
The length of the feed movements of the workpiece is changed in a known manner by the worker to adapt to the workpiece. Here, by connecting parts between the Vorsehubgetriebe for the workpiece and for the adhesive strand, the feed rate of the adhesive strand of material can be changed accordingly. However, it is also possible to change the advance of the adhesive strand independently of the workpiece advance.
According to another embodiment of the invention, one of the above-described adhesive application device similar Vorrich device is used to apply adhesive to book layers, which are then ver by a Vorriehtung not presented with a Vonsatz connected. As is well known, such intentions in a book lie between the book cover and the book layers.
The application device here has a two-part table 416 (FIG. 9) over which the layers 436 are moved by pushing forward 422, the back ends of the layers moving past a guide plate -124. An endless chain -125 carries a plurality of pre-lifting pawls 422.
Above table 416 is one. The disk 434 corresponding to the disk 342 described above is also mounted in a recess of a metal housing 452 and is rotated by a shaft 456, the feed speed of the pawls corresponding to the rotational speed of the disk. Heating elements 466, of which only one element is shown, are arranged in the housing on both sides of the pane. The lower end of the disk 434 protrudes from the housing 452.
A tube 476 opens into a channel 474, which initially runs tangentially to the disk 434, through which a strand or rod 480 made of thermoplastic adhesive is advanced. To the right of a vertical line intersecting the axis of the disk 434, the channel 474 narrows as it continues and runs around the disk periphery downwards. At the lower end 482 of the channel where the disk emerges from the housing, the distance between the disk and the housing is only about 0.5 mm. The distance 484 between the disk 434 and the housing 452 on the left, that is to say on the upward moving disk side, is also only approximately 0.5 mm.
The disk 434 performs an additional function in that, unlike the disk 349, it also applies adhesive. In addition, transverse incisions, not shown, are formed on the periphery of the disk 434, which help to crush small foreign parts in the adhesive before it is conveyed out of the channel 474 through the disk.
In order to determine the amount of adhesive to be applied to each workpiece, that is to say the thickness of the adhesive strip, the device has a scraper 490 which is attached to a shaft 499. The scraper has a flat 494, and the lower edge 496 lying between the flat 494 and the rounding of the scraper 490 can be adjusted in relation to the disk periphery by rotating the shaft 492. The 496 is usually positioned 0.13 mm from the periphery of the disk. A handle (not shown) is used to rotate the shaft 492 to adjust the scraper 490.
If necessary, the adhesive forms threads between the workpiece and the upwardly moving disk part which are removed by a finger 516. The finger 516, which is mounted directly above the tigeh 416, extends transversely to the disk periphery on the side of the disk that is moving upwards and is also heated, the temperature of the finger 516 being higher than that of the disk 434.
Furthermore, in order to prevent excess glue from dripping from the side surfaces of the disc 434 onto the workpiece, the lower end of the housing 452 is partially cut out next to the recess for the disc, and any glue that may collect there is removed by the rotary movement of the disc pulled back into the housing. This is facilitated by the fact that the housing is slightly rounded at 530 and thus the distance between the housing and the disk at the entry point of the disk periphery into the housing is somewhat increased. The adhesive strand 480 is fed to the housing 452 or the housing 452 by means of feed rollers 532, 534.
Channel 474 advanced. The feed speed of the adhesive strand corresponds to that of the workpieces. Furthermore, the rollers 532, 53-I are actuated by a friction drive in the same way as the vorbesehriebenen Rol len 555, 570.
