bei höheren Konzentrationen stört das Schäumen des An satzes beim Entspannen, Die Konzentrationen des ionogenen Netzmnttels betragen bei Ein satz eines Polyvinylalkohols mit einer Versei- fungszahl 100 zweckmässig etwa 0,01 bis 0,1%;
Process for the suspension polymerization of vinyl chloride It is known to use vinyl chloride alone or in a mixture with other monomers by the so-called suspension polymerization process with catalysts which are insoluble in water but soluble in the monomer, such as benzoyl peroxide or lauryl peroxide, and with polyvinyl alcohol as. Polymerize emulsifier in the presence of water.
The polyvinyl chloride produced by this process or the corresponding copolymers have unsatisfactory properties; the plasticizability of the products is, especially if. the polymerization. has been carried out up to high conversions, is difficult and its heat stability is insufficient.
It has been found that by using a small amount of ionic wetting agents, such as salts of alkarylsulfonic acids, salts of sulfonated esters of aliphatic carboxylic acids, salts of sulfonated fatty acid esters, salts of primary sulfates of secondary alcohols or of salts of low molecular weight fatty acids (carbon number up to 10)
Together with a partially acetylated polyvinyl alcohol as a dispersing agent, a significantly better processability and heat stability of the polyvinyl chloride or vinyl chloride copolymers obtainable in water with a water-insoluble, monomer-soluble catalyst can be achieved by the suspension polymerization process.
You can then products with a very small and uniform particle size of. about 0.1 to U.2, mm0 obtained.
Examples of the above-mentioned groups of ionic wetting agents are: Sodium as a salt of an alkaryl sulfonic acid, ure diisobutylnaphthalenesulfonic acid.
As the salt of a sulfonated ester of an aliphatic carboxylic acid, the sodium salts of the dioctyl and diisoamyl sulfosuccinic acid esters.
As a salt of a primary sulfate of a secondary alcohol, the compound of the formula
EMI0001.0064
As the salt of a sulfonated fatty acid ester, the sodium salt of a sulfonated triol acid ester.
As salts of low molecular weight fatty acids (carbon number up to 10), the sodium salt of the first runnings from paraffin oxidation - Fettsäuregemisehes with 7 to J. C = atoms.
The roller temperature required for plasticizing the polymers obtained according to the invention is generally about 10 below the temperature required for plasticizing the polymers produced without the addition of a wetting agent.
The acetyl group content of the polyvinyl alcohol can vary within wide limits; Polyvinyl alcohols with a higher saponification number, for example with a saponification number of 300, are more suitable than acetylation products with a saponification number of about 30.
Mixtures of polyvinyl alcohols with different saponification numbers can also be used. The optimum amount of ionic wetting agent depends on the saponification number of the polyvinyl alcohol.
When using products with a low saponification number, it is advisable to use less wetting agent, and more for products with a high saponification number. Concentrations of 0.0.5 to 0.2% partially acetylated polyvinyl alcohol in the water are generally most suitable,
at higher concentrations, foaming of the batch interferes with relaxation. When a polyvinyl alcohol with a saponification number of 100 is used, the concentrations of the ionic mesh are approximately 0.01 to 0.1%;
for polyvinyl alcohol with a saponification number of 300, 0.05 to 0.2% wetting agents are generally most suitable.
Example 1 12.00 kg of water, 12 kg of 10 percent aqueous solution of a partially acetylated polyvinyl alcohol with a saponification number of 300 are placed in a stirred autoclave with a capacity of 2 m3 and is plated with chrome-nickel steel.
12i_kg 10 percent aqueous solution of diisobutyl.- napUthalinsulfonsanrem sodium and 800 g of benzoyl peroxide. After removing the air by evacuation or displacement. 600 kg of vinyl chloride are added all at once with nitrogen, and at @ 5-0 the mixture is stirred until the pressure drops from about 7 at to 3.5 at. This takes about 45 hours.
The pressure is then released and most of the water is removed from the polyvinyl chloride by centrifugation or suction. If the polymer is still washed, for example by spinning, its electrical properties will be significantly improved.
The polyvinyl chloride obtained is aiu, 'parts from 0.0'5 to 0.25 mm0 with a K value of 70, while a polymer obtained without addition of wetting agent has a particle size of 0.03 to 0.7 mm0 .
With or without the addition of plasticizers, it can be plasticized at a temperature about 1.5 times lower than a product produced under the same conditions, but without the addition of sodium diisobutylnaphthalenesulfonate. Example 2 The process of Example 1 is repeated, with lauryl peroxide being used in an amount of 400 g instead of benzoyl peroxide. The polymerization is completed in 30 hours.
The polymer is distinguished by ease of processing and good thermal stability; its particle size is 0.1 to 0.2 mm, its K value 72.
Example 3 The procedure of Example 1 is repeated, 400 g of a mixture of equal parts of 2,4-dichlorobenzoyl peroxide and dibutyl phthalate being used as the catalyst.
The polymerization lasts until the pressure drops to 4 at 28 hours. The polymer consists of uniform particles from 0.1 to 0.2 mm0, can be easily plasticized like that of Example 1 and has a K value of 71.
EXAMPLE The experiment from Example 1 is repeated, except that instead of benzoyl peroxide as the water-insoluble catalyst soluble in the monomer, 400 g of first-run fatty acid peroxide of the formula R-COOOCO R with a carbon number of 8 to 16 and instead of polyvinyl alcohol with a saponification number of 300 die the same amount of partially acetylated polyvinyl alcohol with <RTI
ID = "0002.0149"> saponification number 100 can be used. A polymer is obtained which is very easy to process. In contrast, a polyvinyl chloride obtained under the same conditions, but without the addition of sodium diisobutylnaphthalene sulfonic acid, is much more difficult to plasticize and is less favorable in terms of application technology.
Example 5 The experiment from Example 1 is repeated, but instead of diisobutylnaphthalenesulfonic acid sodium, the same amount of initial fatty acid sodium with a carbon number of 7 is used. In addition, 1.2 kg of dichloroethylene are added to the polymerization batch. The polymerization at 50 lasts 35 hours; the polyvinyl chloride obtained can easily be plasticized.
Example 6 According to the procedure of Example 1, 300 kg vinyl chloride and 200 kg vinyl acetate are used instead of 600 kg vinyl chloride. The copolymer obtained is very fine-grained.
