5-2 nisli Luft behan delt.
Process for the preparation of diesters of aromatic dicarboxylic acids It is known that alkylaromatics can be oxidized by treatment with elemental oxygen or oxygen-containing gases in the liquid phase at elevated temperature, expediently in the presence of catalysts. So z.
B. toluene relatively easily to benzoic acid, the xylenes zti toluic acids, etc. oxidize. Ent hold the Alkylaroinaten several oxidizable alkyl groups, z.
B. methyl groups, such as the xylenes, mesitylene (1,3,5-trimethylbenzene), pseudoettiiiol (1,2,4-trimethyl-betizol), durol (1,2,4,5-tetrameth. # - 1- benzene) etc., or also longer alkyl chains, such as the ilet.h - # - läthylbenzenes, the cymene (methylisopropylbenzenes) etc., and the corresponding derivatives of more pithy Aronra.ten, such as naphthalene, diphenyl,
Anthracene, etc., it is found that the oxidation of the first oxidizable alkyl group to the carboxyl group proceeds more or less easily, but that the further oxidation of the alkylated aromatic monoearboxylic acid formed to the dearboxylic acid, etc., is disproportionately much more difficult, so that it is very difficult to produce di- or poly-carboxylic acids in this way.
In contrast, the esterification of the dicarboxylic acids to the diesters takes place without difficulties. It has now been found that the oxidation of the second alkyl group with elementary oxygen or oxygen-containing gases at elevated temperature, if necessary under pressure, advantageously in the presence of catalysts such as heavy metal compounds, with significantly increased speed and improved yields goes
if the carboxyl group already formed by oxidation is esterified beforehand and the mono-alkylated aromatic monocarboxylic acid esters are then subjected to oxidation instead of the free acids.
The resulting diacid monoesters can then be converted into the diesters in a customary manner.
The process according to the invention for the preparation of diesters of aromatic di-carboxylic acids by oxidation of dia.lkylated aromatic compounds with oxygen or oxygen-containing gases in the liquid phase and esterification of the carboxyl groups formed is thus characterized
that the monoalkylated aromatic monoarboxylic acids occurring in the oxidation of the dialkylaromatic compounds are esterified, the monoesters are further oxidized to the dicarboxylic acid esters and these are finally converted into the dicarboxylic acid diesters by esterification of the second carboxyl group. In this way it is possible to considerably increase both the reaction speed and the yield compared to known processes.
The sequence of the individual reaction stages in the process according to the invention is thus the following: oxidation of the first alkyl group to the carboxyl group, esterification of this carboxyl group, oxidation of the second alkyl group to the carboxyl group, esterification of this second carboxyl group.
The conversion of the difficultly oxidizable monomethyl aromatic monocarboxylic acids into the more easily oxidizable esters is expediently carried out before their concentration in the reaction mixture has increased so that the rate of oxygen uptake has decreased noticeably.
It is fundamentally irrelevant whether the conversion of the difficultly oxidizable acids into the more easily oxidizable esters takes place after their complete or partial separation from the other components of the reaction mixture or in their presence; the most twofold way of working in individual cases is easy with a simple experiment. to investigate.
According to the process according to the invention, the esters can be produced from both monohydric and polyhydric alcohols, both from aliphatic as well as from eyeloaliphatic and aromatic alcohols, such as. B. Toluene alcohol.
In the further description and in the examples, the implementation of the oxidation of the monoalkyl monoarboxylic acid esters to the diacid monoesters is explained in greater detail; the other stages can be carried out in a known manner.
A technically particularly important example of the use of the process according to the invention is the preparation of phthalic esters with oxidation of xylenes to toluic acids, in particular the preparation of terephthalic esters via p-toluic acid. While the oxidation of toluic acids with oxygen or oxygen-containing gases is extremely sluggish even at elevated temperatures and in the presence of catalysts,
let the toluic acid esters oxidize smoothly with phthalic acid monoesters and convert them into the diesters in a known manner. One can start from pure toluic acid esters as well as from their chemical interactions.
The temperature at which the oxidation of the toluic acid esters with oxygen or oxygen-containing gases is carried out can vary within wide limits; in practice it is between about 80 and 250 C, before geous between about 110 and 200 C. By increasing the pressure, the reaction rate is increased; an increase in pressure also allows the reaction temperature to be increased without having to give up working in the liquid phase. Appropriately, the exhaust gases from the oxidation are cooled and the condensate which separates out is returned to the oxidation vessel after the water formed has been separated off.
Suitable catalysts are those known for oxy dations with gaseous oxygen, in particular the salts of metals which, like cobalt or manganese, are able to occur in several valencies. The salts of cobalt are particularly suitable. Toluic acid or with lower fatty acids, in particular the mixture of initial fatty acids with 6-12 carbon atoms obtained in the paraffin oxidation.
The preparation of the tere- and isophthalic acid monomethyl ester from the corresponding toluic acid methyl ester is particularly simple. The tere- txnd isophthalic acid monomethyl esters are only soluble to a limited extent in the hot Oxy dationsgemiseh and separate on cooling z.
B. to 30 to 50 C almost completely in well-crystallized form, so that they can be easily filtered off; After simple washing with a solvent, for example with ethanol, the honey esters are even sehmelt-pure.
They allow it to further esterify in a familiar way. The remaining liquid portions of the oxidation mixture can be further oxidized directly with the catalyst dissolved in them. The methyl alcohol used to wash the crystallized tere- or isophthalic acid monomethyl ester is expediently used without further work-up for the esterification of the toluic acid used as the starting material.
Another embodiment of the process described consists in separating the phthalic acid monomethyl ester from the gases from the oxidation by fractional condensation. The monoester can easily be separated from the cooling surfaces as a sublimate with a pure melting point. If desired, the monoester can also be eliminated from the reaction mixture in the form of the ester salts by neutralization with alkalis, or by extraction with hot water or
aqueous methanol mixtures.
Instead of going from pure toluic acid esters, the toluic acid-containing products can also be used with advantage, as z. B. can be obtained by oxidation of xylenes in a manner known per se.
In this case, the xylenes are expediently oxidized first with oxygen or air, expediently in the presence of oxidation catalysts, until larger amounts of toluic acids are formed, and the acids formed are isolated by filtration from the reaction mixture, which is expediently cooled, or by distilling off the unchanged xylene.
The isolated acid is esterified in a manner known per se, the beigemiselite dicarboxylic acid ester is optionally separated off, which is easy to achieve due to its low solubility, and the toluic acid ester either for it or in a mixture with the anoxidized xylenes from which the to - luyic acids had been separated off, and friselix voles further oxidized.
If the further oxidation of the toluylic acid ester together with. the xylenes made, so part. As the oxidation progresses, a mixture of toluic acids and dicarboxylic acid monoesters and a few dicarboxylic acids are separated off. and is esterified. The dicarboxylic acid diesters are expediently separated off from the ester mixture and the toluic acid esters are oxidized again.
It is also possible to esterify the toluic acids in the presence of the xylene, without separating them beforehand, by adding an alcohol and, if necessary, esterification catalyst to the oxidation mixture, heating to the boil until the toluic acids dissolve, and excess alcohol and di- CarbonsKurediester separates and further oxydated.
In this way it is possible to convert the xylenes into the dicarboxylic acid esters without the aid of oxidizing agents other than gaseous oxygen.
The esterification of the toluic acid-containing products can be carried out in a manner known per se, expediently using esterification catalysts such as concentrated sulfuric acid, hydrogen chloride or the like. The use of hydrogen chloride has the particular advantage that it is driven off at the same time as the excess alcohol and an ester that is immediately suitable for further oxidation is obtained.
For technical purposes, the process according to the invention is advantageously carried out continuously by continuously removing the acid mixture formed during the oxidation of the dialkylaromatics from the hydrocarbon and / or the dicarboxylic acid monoester formed during the further oxidation of the separated and esterified acid mixture continuously from the oxydie The resulting ester mixture is removed, the composition of the mixtures to be oxidized being kept approximately constant by recycling the oxidation products freed from the acids or monoesters and by adding fresh hydrocarbon or fresh ester.
The continuous separation of the acid mixture from the xylene and / or the dicarboxylic acid monoester from the ester mixture ensures that the oxidation proceeds completely evenly and that there are difficulties in carrying out the oxidation, as caused by the change in the oxidation rate due to the constantly changing composition of the to oxidizing mixtures occur should be avoided.
The continuous separation of the acid mixture from the xylene subjected to oxidation is expediently carried out in that part of the oxidation mixture is constantly removed from the oxidation vessel and cooled, and the substances that crystallize out mechanically, e.g. B. by filtering or centrifuging, are separated.
It is also possible to free the withdrawn part of the oxidation mixture from unaltered xy lol by distillation or to remove the acids from the xy lol with the help of solid or dissolved basic substances or by extraction with hot water or dilute alcohol, but it has to the separation by cooling from and mechanical separation of the precipitated as the most advantageous he showed.
The temperature to which the acids must be cooled off depends on the type of hydrocarbons and acids as well as the concentration, i.e. the degree of oxidation. It is expedient to keep the degree of oxidation at such a level that when cooling down to approximately normal temperature, an easy-to-use, in particular pumpable, mixture of crystals and liquid is obtained. In the oxidation of z.
B. p-xy lol, this is the case if the saponification number of the oxidation product is kept at about 260-340. It is of course possible to set the degree of oxidation to a value that deviates from this. to keep.
The liquid fractions separated from the acids which have separated out are fed back to the oxidation process, and expediently recycled. If the starting hydrocarbon, e.g. B. the p-xylene, does not consist of the pure p-compound, but still contains isomeric and / or non-aromatic hydrocarbons, a purification can either by a physical process, such as fractional distillation or crystallization, or before the return A chemical process can also be switched on in order to keep the content of impurities in the oxidation vessel as low as the acid content.
In the case of p-xylene, see z. B. a conversion with form aldehyde in acidic solution, with predominantly ni-xylene is excreted in the form of a resin, which process is also suitable for obtaining a highly enriched p-xylene useful for the oxidation from technical xylene.
The fresh hydrocarbon required to replace the hydrocarbon removed from the oxidation tank in the form of the acids is expediently used to wash the acids that have separated out.
The diacid monoesters which are formed during the oxidation of the alkyl aromatic esters, e.g. B. in the case of the p-ToluyIäure- ester of terephthalic acid monoester, are expediently also continuously separated from the ester mixture during the oxidation, which can be done analogously by continuously removing part of the oxidation mixture, cooling and mechanical separation of the crystallizing terephthalic acid monoester.
The separation of the terephthalic acid monoester by distillation or by means of salt formation is possible, but less advisable. The acid number of the oxidizing ester mixture is expediently kept between about 100 and 200; in the case of esterification with methyl alcohol, cooling the oxydate to 30-50 ° C. is then sufficient to separate most of the mono-diethyl terephthalate from the ester in crystalline form .
Example 1 1000 g of ethyl p-toluylate are mixed with atmospheric oxygen (1.5 liters / min.) With addition of 2 g of a mixture of the cobalt salts of fatty acids with 6-10 carbon atoms at 120 ° C. for 8 hours oxidized. The crystalline precipitated terephthalate monoethyl ester is filtered off with suction at 30, freed from adhering p-toluic acid methyl ester by washing with methyl alcohol and then dried.
The yield is 240 g of monomethyl terephthalate with an acid number of 313 (theoretically 311.5), a saponification number of 621 (theoretically 623) and a melting point of 217.
The melting point does not change during recrystallization. 800 g of liquid fractions containing the catalyst in dissolved form are obtained, which are fed to further oxidation.
Example N 800 g of catalyst-containing p-toluic acid methyl ester recovered from an oxidation are topped up with 200 fresh p-toluic acid methyl ester and added with atmospheric oxygen (1.5 liter III) for 5.5 hours 110 ° C. without further addition of catalyst. The sanitary bed is 1050g.
After cooling down, 285 g of terephthalate methyl ester with an acid number of 310, a saponification number, can be obtained. of 620 and a melting point of 27.7 C in crystalline form.
Example. 3 720 g of catalyst-containing p-toluic acid methyl ester recovered from an oxidation are topped up with 530 g of Friscii-p-toluic acid methyl ester and poured at 1.5 liters / min. Oxygen in the air is oxidized for 12 hours at 150 ° C. without adding a new catalyst. 165 g of terephthalic acid monomethyl ester are obtained in pure form as a sublimate from the exhaust gases. An additional 175 g of monomethyl terephthalate are obtained from the contents of the container by suction.
Example 1000 g of methyl m-toluate are mixed with 2 g of the cobalt salts of a fatty acid mixture with 6-10 C = atoms and mixed with 2 liters of air / min. is oxidized at 130-1.10 C, the exhaust gases are cooled and the condensate is returned after separating the water contained in it. The Oxydationsgemiseh has an acid number of 30 after 22 hours; after 44 hours it has risen to 49.4 and after 62 hours it reaches 114.5.
After 68 hours, copious amounts of isophthalic acid monomethyl ester have crystallized out on the walls of the vessel; the liquid portion has an acid number of 119.4, saponification number 458.8. Overall who received the 1045 g of oxidation product, which solidifies when cooled to a crystal mass settled with liquid.
By taking up the product in methyl alcohol or other solvents, such as acetone or hot water, 460 g of isophthalic acid monomethyl ester with a melting point of 188 ° C., acid number = 310, saponification number = 621 are obtained.
Unreacted methyl toluate is oxidized again; In this way a quantitative conversion into isophthalic acid monomethyl ester is achieved in practice.
Example s 1000 g of methyl toluic acid ester are mixed with 2 g of the cobalt salts of fatty acids with 6-10 carbon atoms and with 1 liter of LuftiMin. oxidized at 130-140 C. The process is carried out under reflux and the condensate is returned to the oxidation vessel after the water of reaction has been separated off. After 68 hours the acid number has risen from 0.5 to 112 and the saponification number from 373 to 481.
The oxidation product is cooled and the separated crystals are filtered off with suction, 655 g of liquid components and 330 g of solid components being obtained; the liquid components are again subjected to oxidation after making up to 1000 g with fresh methyl o-toluic acid.
The solid fractions turn out to be a mixture of phthalic acid monoester, o-phthalic acid and o-phthalic anhydride. The mixture is washed with methyl alcohol and then esterified with methyl alcohol; the subsequent distillation of the esterification product gives 280 g of pure o-phthalic acid dimethyl ester.
The resulting mixture of o-phthalic acid monoester, o-phthalic acid and its anhydride can of course also be broken down directly by distillation or sublimation, the phthalic acid being converted into its anhydride.
Example 6 1000 g of xylene, which contains about 87% p-xylene, are mixed with 2 g of the cobalt salts of fatty acids with 6-10 carbon atoms and at 125 C for 15 hours with 1.5 liters of air per hour. The exhaust gases are passed through a reflux cooler and the condensate formed is returned to the oxidation vessel after the water it contains has been separated off.
After this time, considerable amounts of crystals have separated out; by filtration after cooling to 25 ° C., 450 g of a mixture of about 83 ° toluic acid and 17% terephthalic acid can be separated off. The filtrate is further oxidized under the same conditions together with fresh xylene, which was previously used to wash the solid fractions.
The acid mixture separated off (350 g) is poured over 1200 g of methyl alcohol and either after adding 15 g of concentrated sulfuric acid. or heated to boiling for 24 hours after saturation with hydrogen chloride gas. The esterification mixture is filtered and 55 g of dimethyl terephthalate (melting point 140 ° C.) are obtained, which is practically pure after being treated with methyl alcohol.
The methyl alcohol is distilled off from the filtrate, any added sulfuric acid is removed by neutralization with NH3 gas or a lye water and the 300 g of methyl toluate obtained are subjected to finite air oxidation at 140-150 C in the presence of fatty acid cobalt. As soon as larger amounts of terephthalic acid emonoinetliyl ester have been deposited,
is filtered after cooling to about 30-50 ° C. and the filtrate is further oxidized together with finite fresh toluic acid ester.
In this way you get about 1 kg of consumed xylene. 160 g dimethyl tereplitlialate and 1300 g ionomethyl tereplitlialate. Example 7 2000 g of xylene, which contains about 95 "! O p-xylene, are, as described in Example 1, oxidized with air for 24 hours.
The oxidation mixture, from which toluic acid has separated out in addition to a little terephthalic acid, is mixed with 6000 g of methyl alcohol, saturated with hydrogen chloride and heated under reflux for 20 hours, then the excess methyl alcohol is distilled off, the hydrogen chloride with.
passes., and filtered off from the 65 g of dimethyl terephthalate formed. Frisclixylene is added to the filtrate and it is further oxidized as at the beginning. After about 10 hours, crystals begin to precipitate again, which now consist of toluic acid, terephthalic acid niononiet / ethyl ester and approximately> free tereplial acid.
The reaction mixture is again finely esterified with methyl alcohol, the diniethyl tereplitlialate is separated off and the residue freed from the ethyl alcohol is further oxidized.
In this way, about 1.75k dimethyl terephthalate are obtained from one kilogram of consumed xylene. Example 8 60 kg of technical xylene, which is mixed with 120 g of Co salts of the first run fatty acids with 6-10 carbon atoms, are placed in a temperature-controlled oxidation vessel with a capacity of 100 liters, with an air distributor and reflux cooler with water separator, filled in and at 130-140 C with 1,
5-2 nisli air treated. After the acid number of the oxidation product has risen to about 250 , 60 kg of oxidate ions are continuously withdrawn per hour, cooled to 20 ° C. and freed from the separated crystals by centrifuging; 8 kg of acid mixture per hour are obtained, which is washed with 8 kg of fresh hydrocarbon.
The 52 kg of filtrate from the crystals and the waseh hydrocarbon are continuously fed back into the oxidation vessel, so that an acid number between about 200 and 280 is constantly maintained in this.
The toluic acids obtained are esterified in a known manner with methyl alcohol. After separating off the excess methyl alcohol, the toluic acid methyl esters are oxidized after adding 2 g of fatty acid cobalt per kilogram at 140 ° C. with about 1.5 liters of air per minute per kilogram.
To process the methyl toluylate that is produced, an oxidation vessel with a capacity of 100 liters is required, which is constantly filled with 60 kg of ester and from which, after an acid number of 100-150 has been reached, 6 kg of monomethyl diacid per hour after cooling to about 30 ° C be separated. The filtrate is returned to the oxidation vessel together with 6 kilograms of toluic acid ester.
In this way it is possible to carry out the oxidation of the lylenes under constant conditions with a minimum of monitoring work.
