Description

Process for the manufacture of a profiled metal tube and tube obtained by this process In the case of shafts which transmit a torsional force and whose axial distances vary during work, it is common practice to establish the joint using an internally toothed coupling sheath which, therefore, can perform a certain movement sliding. The best-known practical application of this principle is, alongside others, the cardan shaft and its sleeve provided with longitudinal teeth, such as they are used for attacking motor vehicles.

The wear of these elements is relatively high and their lifespan consequently reduced because the finishing, which is carried out by cutting the material, destroys the structure and the homogeneity of the surface.

The present invention relates to a process for the manufacture of a profiled metal tube, characterized in that a longitudinal profile is formed inside a metal tube blank by cold hammering without cutting metal chips. .

The invention also comprises a tube obtained by this method.

Cold hammering does not involve any cutting of material, as occurs, for example, in drilling, drawing, turning, disgorging, etc., with the result that the metal displaced, without changing the conti nuance of fibers, is significantly improved, that is to say condensed and made more homogeneous, being at the same time dimensioned with extreme resistance.

The natural wear with use is, therefore, slowed down and the life of the parts increases.

An embodiment of the method forming the subject of the invention will now be described by way of example.

A tube 28 mm in diameter, 4 mm thick and 4 m in length, is threaded onto a mandrel, a tool used for cold deformation and having 23.8 mm in outer diameter and 150 mm in length. The profile of this tool is the negative of the one to be formed inside the tube. This tube is then moved axially on the mandrel using a special device, so as to obtain the cold deformation of its inner wall.

The forward speed is about 1 meter per minute, so that after 4 minutes the operation is finished and the internally profiled tube comes out of the hollow shaft of the machine.

The tube thus obtained has the following dimensions: 26 mm in diameter, 2 mm thick, 6 meters in length, and has 18 internal ribs of approximately 2.5 mm in height.

The strength of the finished tube is about 40% higher than that of the starting tube, and its outer surface is polished like a mirror.
