<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

The present invention relates to a process for notching a tube. Notching is an operation of preparing a tube with a view to welding it by its end on the wall of another tube.
The notching of a tube consists in producing at the end of the tube a concave shape capable of marrying the external contour of the wall of the tube on which the first tube is to be welded. Up to now, the notching of a tube to be welded to another tube has been carried out by grinding or cutting. Grinding makes it possible in principle to obtain any shape.
However, the grinding wheel must attack edges and this in thin thicknesses. This operation is abrasive. There is therefore rapid wear of the grinding wheels, to which is added the high time required and the lack of precision in length and also in form. Without forgetting the dust generated and the influences on health and dangers for personnel.
To proceed by cutting, it is necessary to maintain the tube from the inside and the outside to avoid its crushing. It is however only difficult to obtain a cut whose diameter is equal to that of the tube to be prepared; this due to the thickness of the walls of the tube. It is also necessary to take into account the sharpening of the tools which must be very sharp.
The object of the invention is to overcome the drawbacks of prior notching techniques.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The invention solves this problem by a method of notching a tube according to which the end of the tube is pushed inwards, at two diametrically opposite points, so as to deform the tube and form an edge which has two curved parts. concave alternating with two parts with convex curvature.
The forming according to the invention can be carried out using various tools. One can for example use two punches arranged obliquely to the longitudinal axis of the tube so that their longitudinal axes are located in the same plane as the longitudinal axis of the tube.
It is also possible to use two rotary cams located in the same plane as the lontitudinal axis of the tube or even two cams or rollers with axial or transverse movement.
The forming can be completed by means of a punch arranged so that its longitudinal axis coincides with the longitudinal axis of the tube, said punch having a shape that fits inside the aforementioned tube or by means of a cam or of a pebble.
The invention has the advantages of making it possible to obtain exact and precise shapes with correct deformed lengths while requiring only an extremely reduced machining time. The precision of the shapes obtained at the end of a tube provides an excellent bearing surface at the junction with a tube on which the formed tube must be welded, which has the consequence of reducing the amount of welding required while ensuring an effective and resistant bond.

The invention is explained in more detail below with the aid of the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 shows two tubes welded to each other and shows the junction concerned by a notching process.
Figures 2 to 5 schematically illustrate an exemplary mode of implementation of the method according to the invention.
Figures 6,7 and 8 show, respectively in perspective, in plan and in elevation, the edge of a tube, formed in accordance with the invention.
FIG. 9 schematically illustrates a variant embodiment of the method according to the invention.
In Figure 1 are shown two sections of tubes 10 and 20 welded to one another. To allow the two tubes to be welded, the tube 10 must first be subjected to a notching process so that its edge 11, which has to make the junction with the tube 20, conforms as perfectly as possible to the surface of the tube 20. Unlike known techniques , the invention relates to a method for notching a tube without removing material. This process is described below using Figures 2 to 9.
A tube 10 to be welded to another tube is held at its end between two fasteners 21 and 22 (Figure 2). According to the invention, the end of the tube 10 is deformed inwards by transverse thrust at two diametrically opposite points A and B (FIG. 3). Transverse thrusts

can be applied using various tools. For example, Figures 3 and 4 schematically show two punches 1 and 2 arranged so that their longitudinal axes are located in the same plane as the longitudinal axis of the tube 10. The shape and dimensions of the punches are chosen to produce curvatures correct adapted to the diameter of the tube on which the tube 10 is intended to be welded.
The forming can be finished by means of another punch 3 arranged so that its longitudinal axis coincides with the longitudinal axis of the tube 10 (FIG. 5), the shape of the punch 3 matching that of the tube 10 so as to be able to get inside of it.
After application of the transverse thrusts, the deformed end of the tube 10 has an edge 11 which forms two parts 12 with concave curvature (FIGS. 6 and 7) alternating with two parts 13 with convex curvature. The profile obtained on the edge 11 of the treated tube 10 is illustrated in elevation in FIG. 8. The forming of the end of the tube 10 is thus carried out without removal of material, which results in advantages in terms of economy and speed of implementation. In addition, thanks to the exact shape obtained and the precise profile of the edge produced, it is possible to obtain an optimal bearing surface and a weld having better resistance than with known techniques.
The forming according to the invention can also be carried out using tools such as cams or rollers, for example. FIG. 9 schematically illustrates the forming by means of two rotary cams 4 and 5. Cams or rollers with axial displacement can also be used for the transverse thrusts.

them as well as for finishing the formed edge.
