Description

Process for the preparation of a viscous liquid with a high flash point and low vapor pressure suitable as a lubricant, sealant and heat transfer medium. which is characterized in that a mixture of monomeric tri-,

Di- and monoaryloxy silanes in which the valences not saturated by the aryloxy group are occupied by substituents which split off during the condensation and in which the tri and di homologs predominate and subject to condensation in the presence of a small amount of water .

The mixture of monomers used as the starting material can be obtained by partial hydrolysis of tetra-aryloxysilane under such conditions that the three homologous oxy-aryloxysilanes are formed side by side in varying proportions, but the tri- and di-homologs predominate.

The same way of working is used in Switzerland. Patent No. 278108 for Tetr.aphenyIsili- kate and Tetrakresylsilikate the wor described.

However, the monomer mixture can also be obtained directly by reacting silicon tetrachloride once with less than 4 mol of aryloxy compound.

The condensation proceeds when using oxy-aryloxysilanes according to the scheme
EMI0001.0053
and when using aryloxyehlorsilanen according to the scheme
EMI0001.0056
Examples of Ar are isopropylphenyl, diamylphenyl, B-naphthyl, etc.

The product obtained during the condensation of the monomer mixture is, due to its viscosity and its heat resistance, an ideal high-temperature lubricant. There is no risk of carbonization,

Formation of sludge or corrosive oxidation products. The only limitation on its use is its poor resistance to hydrolysis, making it unsuitable in cases where contact with water or steam cannot be avoided.

The lubricity of the mixture can be greatly increased by adding colloidal graphite to it, and because of its aromatic nature, which makes it almost ideal wetting and dispersing agents for graphite and other types of free carbon, it can withstand larger amounts of graphite than any a well known lubricant.

The mixture also has a vapor pressure which is extremely low in terms of its viscosity and is therefore suitable as a vacuum seal in high vacuum pumps and as a lubricant in high vacuum.

It can also be used as a liquid heat transfer medium and, since its flash point is considerably higher than that of tetrasilanes, the risk of fire is reduced to a minimum.
