Plastic-based composition and manufacturing process of this COMPOWOK-,
The invention relates to a composition based on a synthetic resin which is characterized in that it consists of a homogeneous mixture comprising at least one synthetic resin and a solid halogenated hydrocarbon, each carbon atom of which carries only halogen atoms.
The invention also extends to a process for manufacturing the aforementioned composition, characterized in that a uniform mixture of at least one synthetic resin and a solid halogenated hydrocarbon of which each carbon atom carries only halogen atoms.
In the present description, the term “perhalogenated aleane” is intended to mean an alkane in which all the hydrogen atoms have been substituted by an atom of a halogen.
In the description of the embodiments of the invention which follows, hexachloroethane is used as the perhalogenated alkane.
The hexachloroethane is dissolved in a resin or in a mixture of synthetic resins which may normally be incompatible, brought to a liquid or pasty state by heating and by means of any suitable mechanical treatment intended to facilitate this operation of. dissolution such as: mixing, calendering, extrusion, drawing, etc.
This operation, for example of mixing, can be carried out under pressure, sometimes even in an inert gas atmosphere, so as to avoid the deterioration of the materials used if they are fragile, or the volatilization of hexachloroethane, a body which sublimates between 190 and 200 C. We can also melt hexachloroethane and it is then he which helps to dissolve the resin.
The hexachloroethane can also be introduced by dissolution in a common liquid solvent or mixture of liquid solvents common to the chosen resins and to itself, this or these solvent (s) then being removed by any conventional means, so that the plastic composition remains. ready to use. The liquid solvent (s) may also not be removed if the composition is produced in the form of a paint or a varnish.
It should also be noted that the presence of hexachloroethane in these paints and varnishes often increases the solubility of the base materials chosen (resin, oils, etc.) or of plasticizers.
It often makes it possible to reduce the proportion of products more expensive than it, hence savings. It also acts in a favorable way on the appearance of the layer formed by the resin and facilitates its application.
Indeed, it behaves like a very strong solid, polyvalent, colorless solvent. It generally increases (depending on the proportion used, which may be very large) the hardness of the resins into which it is introduced, and it may sometimes be necessary to modify the content and the nature of the plasticizers used for such materials.
Hexachloroethane was used in for. used as a plasticizer for celluloid, but it has generally been abandoned as such precisely because it increased the fragility of the composition and the industry had since created organic plasticizers which act more effectively.
The use of hexachloroethane as a constituent of the compositions in accordance with the invention makes it possible either to modify certain properties of a given resin or, by its effect as a solid third solvent, to make them compatible within the same homogeneous solid phase. resins which, generally, are little or little; this use makes it possible, for example, to make much less flammable (by reducing the speed of propagation of the flame) or even sometimes practically non-flammable, the constituent resin (s), hexachloroethane forming, by heat volatilization, a gas highly extinguisher.
Hexachloroethane additionally provides the compositions with its well known fungicidal and inseeticide properties.
In order to avoid hot corrosion by hexachloroethane of machines or devices coming into contact with the composition, it may be necessary to add to the latter a corrosion inhibitor (thiourea derivatives, etc.) or small amounts of the compounds. products generally used for hot stabilization of chlorinated derivatives, such as soaps or other organic lead compounds, etc .;
It may sometimes be more convenient to introduce hexachloroethane by dissolution in the raw materials used for the preparation of the resins, before polymerization.
Hexachloroethane can sometimes be replaced by other solid perhalogen compounds such as: loetochloropropane, deaehlorobenzene, hexachlorobenzene, etc.
In general, one can use to carry out the invention the perhalogenous aleanes having a straight chain and at least two carbon atoms, the perhalogenated eycloaleanes having a ring with six carbon atoms and the benzene compounds of which all the atoms hydrogen are replaced by a halogen (preferably chlorine), the double bonds being preserved (hexachlorobenzene).
Examples of embodiments of the invention:
1 "Composition based on polystyrene, non-flammable:
Polystyrene 84
Eexachlorethane 15
Pb stearate .. 1
The mixture is hot kneaded in a pressurized mixer at a temperature of about 200, or else in an extrusion machine around 180.
To obtain a good distribution of the hexachloroethane, it is possible, prior to the action of heat, to stick the hexachloroethane eristals and the lead stearate on a polystyrene in grains by adding 1 or 2 / o of a solvent volatile, with careful mixing, this solvent being removed; again, replace it with a plasticizer such as polychlorinated diphenyl.
2 Non-flammable polyamide-based composition:
Process and proportions similar to those of Example 1, but operating in a closed container with an inert atmosphere to avoid altering the material.
3 Composition for obtaining non-flammable polyvinyl chloride films:
Plasticized Polyvinyl Chloride 89
Hexachlorethane 10
Lead stearate .. 1
The mixture is made hot on heating calenders until complete dissolution. Then the resulting mass can be stretched into films on the usual machines.
4 Composition for obtaining objects made of hardened polyvinyl chloride:
As above, but with 201% Hex Chloroethane. Transparent or non-transparent panels can be produced with this composition, etc.
5 Composition based on phenoplasts:
The hexachloroethane, in a proportion which can reach 30 / o and more can be dissolved in the cresol before condensation or, on the contrary, if the composition is intended to be used in varnish, for winding or manufacture of laminates or other, the hexachloroethane can be dissolved directly in the varnish.

Eresol-formaldehyde resin. 49
6 Composition based on mixed resins:
Plasticized Polyvinyl Chloride 64
Hexachloroethane 15
Phenoplast resin 20
Lead stearate. 1 same method of preparation as in Example 3.
This gives an infusible but heat-softenable material, allowing stamping, stamping, etc. harder than polyvinyl chloride and still quite flexible.
7 Composition based on methacrylic resin:
Methyl methacrylate monomer 80
Hexachlorethane 20
The hexachloroethane is dissolved in the monomer and the polymerization is then carried out by the usual means with a catalyst.
There is thus a harder transparent material, and a slower flame propagation.
8 Composition usable as fire retardant paint:
Painting with glycerophthalic resins, with or without polyvinyl chloride, with or without drying oil, plus 20 hexachloroethane ouzo dissolved by stirring directly in the paint.
The quantity of resin can in general be reduced without inconvenience, resulting in a reduction in cost price, increase in. hardness, etc.
Some of the above compositions can be used for the injection or the impregnation-directly or after formation of an emulsion-of materials, in order to make these materials less or non-flammable, together with fungicides and in secticides.
Example: Injection into agglomerates of wood fibers in an autoclave under pressure, hot, of a plastic mass composed of:
Lightly polymerized polystyrene resin 50
Hexaehloroethane .. 50
