(fig.

The device shown in the drawing is. the fuel injection device of a four-stroke twelve-cylinder engine. In this device, the fuel is withdrawn from a main tank 11 by a pump. engre nage 12 and discharged into a float chamber 13. From this float chamber, the fuel is pumped by a second gear pump 14, constituting the feeder pump which submits. the fuel at a pre-determined minimum pressure and delivers it to the metering pump 15.
The number 18 designates the body of the power supply apparatus in the lower part of which rotates a shaft 19, one end of which projects out of this body and. on which is. fixed a drive member 20, driven by the engine crankshaft so that the shaft 19 rotates at the speed of this crankshaft.
Inside the body 18, a conical pinion 21 is fixed to the shaft 19 and meshes with a bevel gear 22 which is integral with the lower end of a shaft 23 which extends upwardly through a wall. 24 and is fixed at its upper end to a cam disc 25 which rests on the upper surface of a flanged sleeve 26 in which the shaft 23 rotates. The peripheral surface of the disc 25 has twelve cams 27 at equal spacing . The report. The speed between pinion 21 and wheel 22 is 2: 1, so that the cam disc 25 makes one full revolution for two revolutions of the shaft 19.
A drive pin 28 extends upwards from the disc 25 and fits in a slot of corresponding shape provided in a connecting member 29, the upper end of which has a slot 30 which places a pin in. The drive 31 integral with a rotating disc 32, disposed inside the body 18. The upper face of the disc 32 is flat and bears against a lower flat face of a dispensing head 33 fixed to the body 18.
The coacting faces of the disc 32 and of the head 33 are kept in contact by means of a helical spring 34 coaxial with the shaft 23, the lower end. of the spring pressing against the cam disc 25 and the upper end against the lower surface of the distributor disc 32.
The distributor disc 32 comprises a radial duct 35 of which. the inner end com munique with an inlet channel 36 which is coaxial with the disc 32 and is. in constant coincidence with the discharge port 37 which terminates in a passage 38 formed in the head 33. The outer end of the duct 35 communicates with a. lumen 3 7 opening in the upper surface of the disc 32 and whose radial distance to the axis of the disc is such that it coincides successively during the rotation of the disc 32 with outlet orifices 40, each of which communicates with a discharge duct 41.
These conduits 41 communicate with injection conduits 17 connected to the injectors (not shown) mounted on the cylinders of the engine.
The conduit. discharge 38 communicates with a passage 42 provided in the. wall 24 of body 18 and which terminates in an orifice 43 formed in a sleeve 44 which is mounted in a bore of body 18.
A constant stroke piston constituted by a sleeve 45 can move back and forth in the sleeve 44 and. its lower part comprises an annular rim 46 against which bears the lower end of a coil spring 47 which surrounds the piston, the upper end of the spring bearing against an annular rim provided on the. socket 44. The spring. 47 constantly pushes the piston 45 towards its. lowest position. The dimension of the piston is such that its upper end 48 to. its highest position is at the lower edge of orifice 43.
The position of the udder shown in fig. 1 is the lowest position.
An adjustment slide 49 can move back and forth in an axial bore 50 provided in the piston 45 and also in a sleeve 51 mounted in the body 18. The upper end of the slide 49 extends above the sleeve 51 and ends by a head 52. A helical spring 53 surrounds the part of the slide which extends above the sleeve 51, the lower end of the spring. pressing against the socket and the upper end against the underside of the head 52.
The spring 53 always tends to push the adjustment slide upwards to the upper limit position shown in FIG. 1.
Near the orifice 43, the slide 49 has a groove 54, and one or more discharge orifices 55, arranged radially, open in the bottom of this groove and communicate with an axial duct 56, the lower end of which terminates at the lower end of the drawer and the upper end at a radially disposed orifice 57 which, in all positions of the drawer, is above the upper surface of the sleeve 51.
The piston 45 is controlled by six cams, 59 with equal spacing presented by a cam sleeve 58 which is fixed to the shaft 19. These cams periodically come into contact with a roller 60 shown on an intermediate part of a lever 61 The lever 61 is mounted inside the body 18, and. its free end engages the lower surface of the piston head 46, the spring 47 constantly keeping this head in contact with the indicated end of the lever 61.
The lower end of the bore 50 of the piston ends. to an orifice 62 located in the head 46, and this orifice serves a double purpose, firstly to provide an escape duct for all or part of the fuel in the pump chamber during the discharge stroke of the piston and, secondly, to lubricate the underside of the piston head, in order to prevent excessive friction against the end of the lever 61.
The fuel is withdrawn from the main tank 11 by a pipe 63, fitted with a retaining valve 63a (fig. 16) and brought into the pump chamber 64 of the gear pump 12 which comprises a pair of toothed wheels 65 and 66, the first being fixed to the shaft 19 and the second to a shaft 19a which can rotate in the housing of the pumps 12 and 4.
The discharge from the pump 12 passes through a conduit 67 and thence into a conduit 68 leading to the float chamber 13, said conduit 68 being regulated by a needle valve 69 carried by a float 70 which pivots in the chamber. chamber 13, the parts being so arranged that when chamber 13 is full, the needle valve prevents further discharge into the chamber.
Fuel from chamber 13 is withdrawn through a conduit. 71 and. arrives in the pump chamber 72 of the feed pump 14 which comprises a pair of toothed wheels 73 and 74, the first being. attached to shaft 19 and the second to. tree 19a. Pump 1-1 delivers fuel through a 75u filter. (fig. 16) in a pipe 75 which communicates with an air chamber 75b (see fig. 1, 3 and 16).
The pipe 75 communicates with a channel 76 (see Figs. 1 and 8) provided in the body 18, and the discharge end of this channel terminates in the passage 42 through a group of parallel conduits 77 which pass through the wall of the pipe. 'a socket 78 mounted in body 18, and by a similar group of conduits 79 located in alignment. with the conduits 77 and which pass through the wall of the sleeve 78.
Communication between the groups of conduits 77 and 79 is controlled by a slide 80 which can move back and forth in the socket 78 and which is connected to a guide 81 by a connection. 82 of reduced diameter., So that, when the drawer occupies the position shown in FIGS. 7 and 8, pressure fuel can flow directly. through passage 42 to the dosing pump chamber, while, when moved to the left (see Fig. 8), the discharge ends of conduits 77 are fully concealed.
The piston guide 81 is integral with a rod 83 projecting outwardly and provided with a head 84; on this head 84 supports a helical spring 85 which surrounds the rod 83 and whose opposite end bears against the adjacent end of the sleeve 78. The spring 85 always tends to push the spool in a direction which hides the orifices 7 7 and 79. The movement of the slide in the opposite direction is effected by means of a lever 86, one end of which presses constantly against the head 84, while its other end carries a roller 87 which bears against the periphery of the cam disc. 25 and periodically. against the cams 27.
The lever 86 pivots on a shaft 88, the ends of which can conveniently rotate in the body 18.
During. two revolutions of the shaft 19, corresponding to two revolutions of the engine crankshaft, and, consequently, at a flow rate of a charge of fuel to each of the injection ducts, the spool 80 receives twelve movements of va -and-comes by means of cams 27, the adjustment of the members being such that, when the drawer 80 occupies the. position shown in fig. 7 and 8, in which communication is established against conduits 7 7 and 79, the discharge lumen 39 of the distributor disc 32 is masked by a part of the stationary distribution head 33 between a pair of successive orifices 40, and the piston 45 performs its suction stroke.
Conversely, during the delivery strokes of the piston 45, the spool 80 will mask. the channel groups 77 and 79, and the. lumen 39 will coincide with one of the outlet ports 40 in the stationary head 33.
When a sufficient quantity of fuel has been collected in the. float chamber 13 to cause the needle 69 to close the conduit 68, the fuel is discharged through the. gear pump through a relief valve 90, into a conduit 89 which terminated at the inlet side of the pump 12. A similar bypass arrangement, denoted by the numeral 91, is provided in the booster pump 14.
A predetermined pressure is. hand held in the conduit 42 by means -de the feed pump when the spool 80 is. open. During periods when the slide 80 masks the conduits 77 and 79, the piston 45 delivers a measured load of fuel through the orifice 43, the passages 42 and 38, the orifice 37 and the conduit. 35 to one of the injection ducts 17.
Since the piston 45 has a constant stroke, a change in the magnitudes of the fuel loads can only be achieved by modifying the position of the regulating spool 49 and three such relative positions of this spool and this piston are shown schematically in fig. 5.
In the intermediate drawing of fig. 5, it will be noted that the adjustment slide 49 has been moved to. a position where its groove 54 is not masked by the piston 45. Consequently, during this stroke, the fuel in the pump chamber will be diverted through the orifices 55 in the duct 56 and will thus flow through the bore of the pump. piston 50 and the orifice 57 towards the bottom of the body 18, as long as each injector has a spring-loaded check valve and the.
pressure required to open this valve is substantially greater than that required to provide flow through orifices 55. Consequently, with spool 49 in the position indicated, no fuel charge will be delivered to the injection ducts. On the drawing of -auelie of the fi! -Y 5, the adjustment slide 49 occupies its lowest position, that is to say a position where the groove 54 is entirely hidden by the piston 45 at the start of its delivery stroke, prevent singing. thus a bypass of any part of the fuel from the pump chamber to the conduit 56 during the upward stroke of the piston 45.
As long as the adjustment slide is in this position, the udder delivers equal and measured loads of maximum volume to the various injection ducts.
In the drawing on the right of fig. 5, the adjustment spool occupies a position where the groove 54 is located in an intermediate position between the limit positions represented by the left and intermediate drawings of the same figure. Therefore, while the piston 45 is moving. up, some of the fuel in the pump chamber will be. deflected by the orifices 55 until the groove 54 is entirely masked by the upper end 48 of the moving piston.
Subsequently, the fuel which remains in the pump chamber will be discharged into one of the various injection conduits. The quantity of fuel unloaded can of course be varied by placing the adjustment slide 49 between the limit positions shown in the left and intermediate drawings of FIG. 5 and, in all cases, when (read the groove 54 occupies any intermediate position between the possible limit positions of this groove,
the quantity of fuel discharged by the injection ducts will be a function of the distance traveled by the piston after the groove 51 has been completely blocked.
Pressurized fuel for the hydraulic transmission of the regulator is delivered by the feed pump 14, after passing through the filter 75a., Into a conduit 170 leading to a pressure regulating valve 171, which is necessary in that the pressure of the fuel delivered by the pump 1-1 varies, of course, quite widely as a result of the variation in the engine speed.
Further, small variations in fuel pressure occur as a result of the intermittent admission of fuel through spool 80.
The valve 171 comprises a casing 172 forming part of the body 18. The ends of this casing 172 are closed by plugs 173, while a bush 17-1 is fixed inside the casing. The envelope 1.72 and. the socket 174 are provided with register holes 175 in communication with the conduit 170. Within the socket 17-1 is a slide 176 normally retained at one end of the socket by a spring 177, a projection 180 of the drawer 176 being intended to abut against the adjacent stopper 173 in order to limit the movement of the drawer in this direction.
The drawer 1.76 has, between its ends, a groove 181 normally in alignment with the orifice 175, so that eombust.ible can flow through the interior of the. socket 174 to one end of a [J 182 shaped duct provided in casing 172 with corresponding openings through socket 174.
The other end of conduit 182 re-enters socket 174 beyond the end of spool 176 so that fuel can flow therefrom to the hydraulic transmission through conduit 93.
During the operation of the pressure control valve 171, the pressure of the fuel supplied by the conduit 170 acts on the end of the spool provided with the projection 180 against the action of the spring 177, and. the force of the spring is such that in the. my position it balances the effect. of this pressure, when it is that desired for the operation of the regulator. In the event that the pressure of the fuel delivered by the pump 14 exceeds the desired pressure, the spool 176 would be forced towards the.
left, as seen in fig. 5a, compressing the spring 177, and reducing. the effective opening of the conduit 175, thereby reducing the flow of fuel and the pressure prevailing in the conduit. 93. We get. thus a substantially constant pressure for the fuel supplied to the hydraulic transmission.
The conduit 93 crosses the. wall of the body 18 as well as a sleeve 94 mounted in this wall, the end of this duct being constantly in communication with a groove 95 provided in a hollow shaft 96 which rotates in the sleeve 94. The lower end of the shaft 96 carries a bevel gear 97 which meshes with a bevel gear 98 integral with shaft 19.
The groove 95 communicates through several radial ports 99 with the axial bore 100 of the shaft 96. The upper end of the shaft 96 has a flange, and pivoting thereon are several masses 101 each provided with a flange. an arm 102 which extends radially inward towards the axis of the # shaft. The inner ends of the arms 102 still bear against the bottom of a thrust bearing 103 which surrounds the upper end of a drawer 104 which can. come and go in the wise random 100.
The upper ring of the thrust bearing 103 bears against the lower side of a head 105 of the drawer 104. A cup 106 rests on the. head 105 and. partially covers. the thrust bearing 103. E 11e has an annular flange 107 which serves. support at the lower end of a helical compression spring 108 including. the upper end presses on a hat 109.
We can. varying the wedge-pressure of the spring 7.08 by means of a lever 110 intended to be moved manually fixed to a shaft 111 which rotates in the body 18. An arm fixed to the shaft 111 bears against the cap 109.
The drawer 1.04 has two spaced Cylindrical parts 112 and 11.3 which fit tightly in the bore 100 and. are. interconnected by a portion 1.14 of reduced diameter, so as to form an annular section space 1.10a., which, in all positions of the drawer, is filled with fuel under pressure. The shaft 96 is provided with a groove 115 disposed above the groove 95 and which communicates with the bore 100 by means of several radial holes 116.
A similar groove 117 and similar ports 1.18 are located in shaft 96 below groove 95, the spacing. axial of the orifices 116 and 118 being. equal to the spacing of parts l.12 and113.
A portion 119 of reduced diameter connects portion 112 to a guide portion 121 provided with circumferentially spaced grooves 120. A reduced diameter portion 124 connects the. part 113 to. a guide part 123 provided with grooves 122.
The groove 117 communicates constantly by means of a conduit. 125 with the lower end of a cylinder 126 formed in the body 18. Similarly, the groove 115 constantly communicates with the upper end. of the same cylinder by means of a duct 127. In the cylinder 126 is mounted a piston 1.28 carrying at its lower end a projection 129 intended to come into contact with the lower end of the cylinder and the upper end of the piston carries a stop sleeve. 130 which surrounds the udder rod 131. The piston rod protrudes upward through a plug 132.
Rod 131 is. in contact with an arm of a lever 133 fixed to a pivoting shaft. 7.34. The other arm of the lever 133 bears against the upper end of the adjustment slide 49.
Polish describe how it works. of the regulatory mechanism described above, reference will first be made to. 1a, fig. 1 of the drawing. In this figure, it will be noted that in FIG. 1. the lever 110 a. been tilted clockwise in order to remove all pressure from regulator spring 108 and thus allow masses 101 to move to their outermost positions. This movement raises the drawer 104, so that the parts 112 and 113 are located above the orifices 116 and. 118, respectively.
Therefore, pressurized fuel will act against the upper end of piston 128 and thereby move the piston to its lowest position, which is the zero feed position. During this movement of the piston, the fuel is. in the lower end of cylinder 126 will be discharged through conduit 125, groove 117 and. the orifices 118 and, from there, through the grooves 122 to the duct 735 provided in the bevel wheel 97, from which the fuel falls into the bottom of the body of the apparatus.
If it is now desired to provide a maximum load of fuel at any given engine speed, the lever 110 is. tilted counterclockwise to compress the spring 108 and the degree of this compression will depend on the speed at which it is desired to adjust the motor. This compression of the spring causes a downward movement of the spool 104 substantially to the position shown in FIG. 6 or to a position where the parts 112 and 1.13 are located under the orifices 116 and 118. respectively.
Fuel under pressure is. then admitted into the lower end of cylinder 126 thus pushing piston 128 to its upper limit position fixed by sleeve 130 and returning the necessary quantity of fuel from the upper end of cylinder 126 to. tra towards the conduit. 127, orifices 116 and grooves 120. Upward movement of piston 128 rocks lever 133 and moves adjustment spool 49 to the position shown in Fig. 6.
Subsequently, for a particular compression of the spring 108, the governor controls the speed of the engine. With an increase in engine speed, which may be caused. by a decrease in the. load, the drawer 104 moves upwards towards and # 7 included a position where the parts 112 and 1.13 completely mask. ports 116 and 11.8, respectively, without changing the position of spool 49.
A further decrease in motor speed would result in spool 49 starting to move upward from the. position shown on the. fig. 6. Therefore., As the engine can. Varying speed to the set adjustment, spool 104 will end float in bore 100. Changes in the selected motor speed can easily be produced by varying the compression on spring 108 using lever 110. .
Therefore, the. arrangement shown in figs. 1 and. 6 allows. The desired setting (the engine speed while maintaining governor control with each adjustment of lever 110. The slightest change in speed will result in an ition of pressure either over the top or.
î appJic # on the underside of the next 128 piston. that there is. increase or decrease in engine speed, and the piston will therefore tend to float in any position required by the engine load and at a constant engine speed since the spool 104 always returns substantially. at the same position.
The engine is started simply by tilting the lever 11.0 to a position such as that shown in fig. 6 in order to ensure a position (the maximum load of the spool 49, while stopping the motor is effected by simply moving the lever 110 to the position shown in fig. 1.
The governor described above is particularly useful for variable speed motors of various applications. The flow deposit in the bottom of the body 18 can be returned to the float chamber 13 through the conduits 162 and 163.
In the variant shown in FIG. 11, a control lever intended to be actuated at the. hand is mounted externally. on one end of a shaft 136 which rotates in the body 18 and, inside the body, this shaft is provided with an eccentric 137 on which rotates an intermediate part of the lever 138 corresponding to the lever 133 of FIG. 6.
One arm of this lever bears against the upper end of the adjustment spool 49, while the other arm bears against the upper end of the piston rod 131. Also fixed to the shaft 136 and spaced axially from it. eccentric 137 is a cam 139. The high points of the eccentric and the cam are. spaced about 180 degrees apart. An arm of a lever 140 engages the periphery of the cam 139 and this lever pivots on a shaft 141 mounted in the body 18, while the other arm of this lever bears against the spring cap 109.
When the parts occupy the position shown in FIG. 11., it is clear that since the lever 140 is in contact with the high point of the cam 139, the spring 108 will be compressed to the maximum degree, so that the spool 10-1 and. the masses 101 will occupy the positions shown in general in FIG. 6 and, therefore, the lever 138 will swing to open the. regulating valve, 49 to the maximum degree. The governor is then adjusted to control the maximum engine speed.
However, if the lever 1.35 turns counterclockwise by an angle of about 90 degrees, the lever 140 will engage. point. bottom of the. cam 139, thereby reducing the load on the spring 108 at the corresponding point. the free speed of the engine. This decrease in the com pressure of the spring 108 is accompanied, for the reasons already indicated with reference to FIGS. 1 and 6, by a movement. piston 128 towards its lowest position and, consequently, a corresponding movement of the piston rod 131. The upper end of this rod acts as a pivot on which the lever 138 sorrel thanks to the action of the eccentric 137.
Therefore, it will be evident that this lever oscillation 138 produces a corresponding change in the position of the adjustment spool 49 from that occupied when the parts were in the position of FIG. 11. The amount of fuel delivered by the metering pump will therefore vary with the positions occupied by the adjustment lever 135 between the limit positions in which the lever 140 engages the high and low points of the cam 139. .
With this arrangement, therefore, it is possible to control the motor between the maximum and no-load speeds thereof, but, when any of these speeds is reached, as well as in intermediate setting positions, the regulator between operation cry and its command predominates. This arrangement is suitable, for example, for truck or locomotive engines requiring both manual control, as well as control by regulator, between maximum and minimum speeds.
The variant of FIG. 13 is intended for. an engine for example driving a generator to. constant speed.
This variant has a starting and stopping lever 1.42 fixed outside the frame 18 to a shaft 143 which rotates in the wall of the body 18 and which carries, inside the latter, an eccentric 144. T'n lever 145, corresponding to lever 133 of the. fig. 6, turns on the eccentric, one arm of this lever bearing. against the upper end of the drawer (the adjustment 49 and the other arm called lever against the end of the piston key rod 131.
A regulator lever 1.46 is. also. mounted outside the body 18 on a shaft 147 which rotates in this body which carries, inside the latter, an arm 148 engaging the spring cap 109.
The parts located in the positions shown in the. Figure, the regulator lever 1.46 is tilted to a position in which substantially no pressure is exerted against the spring of the regulator 108, thus allowing the piston 128 of the regulator to occupy its lowest position, as it has. been explained for the regulating device of fig. 1 and 6.
The switch on and off. 142 occupies the position shown in FIG. 11, or a position in which the lever 145 has rotated counterclockwise enough to allow the spring 53 to withdraw the adjustment spool to a position corresponding to. the position of the valve shown in fig. 1., so that the engine is stopped.
This variant being intended for constant speed adjustment comprises an arrangement making it possible to lock the regulator lever 1.46 in any desired position. For this purpose, a screw 149 passes through the end of the regulator lever and an arcuate slot 150 provided in a quarter circle 151. integral with the body 18. A friction washer 152 can be clamped against the surface of the are of the circle. by means of a nut 153.
Lever 142 is used to start and stop the engine. For the. first operation, it suffices. simply tilt the lever 112 clockwise to ensure the desired opening of the adjustment slide 49. The lever 1..16 being in the position corresponding to the desired degree of compression of the spring 108, the motor will rotate at the required constant speed below the. regulator control.
When it is desired to stop the engine, the lever 142 is moved counterclockwise, as shown in FIG. 13, thereby bringing the adjustment slide 49 to. move to its position no fuel or stop., the piston rod 131 serving (the stop on which the lever 145 swings.
In the key variant, fig. 15, a lever of. switching on and off 1:54 est. mounted outside the body 18 on one end of a shaft 155, and. an eccentric 156 is fixed on this shaft inside the body. A.
lever 157, corresponding to lever 1.33 in fig. 6, rotates on eccentric 156, one end of this lever encasing the upper end of the adjustment spool 49, while the other arm of the lever comes into contact with the end of the piston rod 131. The arm of the lever 157 to the right of the shaft l_55, keeping in mind fig. 15, is provided with a stop 158 against which rests an arm of a lever 159 mounted on a shaft 160, the ends of which can be rotated in the body 18. The other arm of the lever 1.59 door against the spring cap 109.
In the case of this variant, the engine can be started by tilting the lever 15-1 clockwise to the position shown in fig. 15 and thus, by means of the eccentric 156, produce a corresponding oscillation of the lever 157 and a movement of the adjustment spool 49 in the desired direction. The engine is stopped by tilting the lever 154 in the opposite direction and, during this movement, the left arm of the lever 7.57 rocks on the upper end of the. udder stalk tone 131.
With the parts in the positions shown in the figure, the spring 108 is compressed so as to move the spool 104 to place the piston 128 in it. highest position shown in fig. 6, when the engine is started by the starter. When the engine starts. running and there is no load on the engine, masses 1.01, as speed increases, slowly tilted outward, moving the spool to the up position and piston 128 to the stop. bottom.
If the load on the motor now increases, its speed decreases, and the masses 101 swing inward enough to move the spool substantially to the position shown in FIG. 6, however. followed by an upward movement of piston 128.
The above action results in a swinging of the lever 157 in the direction of clockwise and an additional closing of the adjustment slide 49, aeeom- pal-born by, and thanks to the tilting of the lever 1.59 clockwise decreases the compression of the spring 108, so that the set speed decreases as the load increases, and vice versa.
It is important, in this variant, that the force exerted by the spring 53 is greater than the force transmitted to the end of the lever 159 by the spring 108 of the regulator, and that pressure sufficient hydraulic pressure is exerted against the piston 128 to overcome the difference between the forces of these springs 53 and 108.
The variant of the. fig. 15 is particularly advantageous in the case of driving motors, alternators operating in parallel since it is possible to provide by this means a fair division of the load between the different units.
In another variant, similar to that shown in, FIG. 15, the arrangement could be such that an increase in the set speed of the motor is obtained together with an increase in the load. In this variant, the end of the lever 159 would rest on a stop 161 presented by the arm of the lever 157 which is to the left of the shaft 155.
It is obvious that then, as the load on the engine increases, the compression on the governor spring 108 will increase. also, as a result of the tilting of the lever 159 in a counterclockwise direction.
