Lightweight tile and its manufacturing process. The present invention relates to a lightweight tile which is characterized in that it consists of a support formed at least of mineral fibers coated in a hydrocarbon binder, this support having a thickness: between 1 and 10 mm, and by a thin aluminum sheet adhering to the outer face of the support, the thickness of said sheet being at most equal to 0.15 mm.
A subject of the invention is also a process for manufacturing tiles such as that defined above. This process is characterized in that a continuous strip of mineral fibers is passed through a bath. hot consisting of -the hydrocarbon binder, in several im mersions, in that a liquid hydrocarbon binder is sprayed under pressure through said strip, in which the latter is then driven in the hot state between rolling rolls , by interposing a thin sheet of aluminum between one of the cylinders and said strip,
so as to make the thin sheet adhere to this strip which will serve as a support for it, and in that it is cut from the support strip covered with the metal sheet of tiles of the desired dimensions.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an installation for implementing an exemplary execution of the method which is the subject of the invention and a tile obtained in this example.
Fig. 1 is a schematic vertical section of this installation,. In the direction of the length. Figs. 2 and 3 are a plan view and a section taken along line III-III of FIG. 2, of an embodiment of the tile object of the invention.
In the installation shown in fig. 1, a strip of mineral fiber felt 1 is cut from a roll 2 and then immersed in three successive phases in a bath of hot liquid bitumen 3 contained in a tank 4. The strip is driven by motor cylinders 5, alternating with spacer drums 6 partially immersed in the bath 3. Perforated nozzles 7 are arranged inside each of the three loops formed by the strip 1.
These nozzles 7 are intended to spray liquid bit-moon under pressure through the strip 1 during its passage through the tank, 4: When leaving tank 4, the strip impregnated and saturated with bitumen, designated by 9, passes into contact with a roller 8 which: applies a superficial layer of hot bitumen to one face of this strip which is then driven while it is still hot between two rolling rolls 10 and 11 rotating at the same circumferential speed than the engine cylinders 5.
The installation further comprises a coil 12 on which is wound an aluminum strip 13, the thickness of which can range from 0.02 to 0.15 mm, which, as it unwinds from the coil 12, passes between the rolling cylinder 11 and the strip of mineral fibers impregnated with bitumen 9. The pressure exerted by the rolling cylinders 10 and 11 causes the aluminum strip 13 to adhere to the underside of the strip of impregnated felt 9 .
A complex material 1.4 is thus obtained which winds on a receiving cylinder 15.
The complex strip 13 can be put in reserve before going through the last operation: cutting, which has not been shown. This cutting can be carried out in a machine equipped with steel knives arranged so as to give the tiles the profile 16 shown in FIG. 2. Due to their lightness, the tiles can be cut in series of three or more pieces, either in the direction of rolling or perpendicular to the roll.
In fig. 3, the reference 20 designates the section of a felt of asbestos fibers coated with bitumen and constituting the support of the tile. An aluminum sheet 21 adheres to this support 20 by virtue of the laminating operation described above. The thickness of the support 20 can vary between 1 and 10 mm; that of sheet 21 is at most equal to 0.15 mm.
The mineral fibers constituting the waterproof support can be made of asbestos, glass or stone, in particular basalt blown into threads after having been brought to a melting temperature close to 1200 C. These mineral fibers are rot-proof, hydrophobic, incom bustible and poor conductors of heat and sound.
To improve thermal insulation, an additional insulating layer of cork or aluminum magnesium silicate can be applied under the support 20.
The mineral fiber support can be a simple web of entangled fibers, a felt or a fabric constituting a weft or a reinforcement. The role of the aluminum foil is to protect the backing. aging by reflecting the sun's rays and protecting mineral fibers and bitumen from weathering and air oxidation. Alternatively, the aluminum foil can be embossed or brushed. Embossing and brushing promote adhesion of the metal to the substrate.
On the other hand, the aluminiLun will preferably be heated before its application to reinforce the oxide layer which increases the adhesion of the fabric. Aluminum can be chemically oxidized and tinted if aesthetic effects are desired.
Currently, one of the best known sealing binders in which mineral fibers are coated is. petroleum pitch oxidized in the pure state or mixed with rubber or plastic resins.
The term bitumen used in the description encompasses all hydrocarbon binders based on petroleum pitch or on coal tar.
