Process for the production of a new dye. It has been found that new brown dyes can be prepared by reacting the chloromethyl or bromomethyl derivatives of acedianthrones, which carry at least one aryl amino group, with a thiourea, these dyes having a better affinity for cotton than the acedianthrone dyes that have become known hitherto Kind,
which are prepared from thiourea and halomethyl derivatives of acedian thrones which do not contain isolated aryl groups; In addition, these new dyes have better lightfastness than the known brown dyes of this type, which are produced from thioureas and halomethyl derivatives of other compounds related to anthraquinone with condensed rings that carry aryl nuclei.
The starting materials used to prepare the new dyes can be made forth by nitration of acedian thron in sulfuric acid or nitrobenzene, condensation of the nitro compound with an arylamine, such as. B. p-toluidine, and halogen methylation of the arylamino aeedianthrons thus obtained by treating it with sym-dichloro-climethyl ether or sym-dibromodimethyl ether in the presence of sulfuric acid or in the presence of aluminum chloride and pyridine.
The arylaminoacedianthrone intermediate product can also be prepared by reducing the nitro compound to the amino compound and condensing the latter with a haloaryl compound.
As starting materials, for example, the mono-, di-, tri- or tetra- (halomethyl) derivatives of anilino, p-toluidino, p-chloroanilino, o- or p-anisidino, m-4-xylidino -, p-acetylaminoanilino,
p-phenyl or phenoxyanilino and a-naphthylamino acedianthrone can be used. If desired, compounds having 2 or more arylamino groups (obtained from dinitro- or polynitro-acedianthrones) can also be used.
The following can be used as thioureas: thiourea itself, N-methylthiourea, N-phenylthiourea., N, N'-dimethylthiourea, N, N-dimethylthiourea, N, N, N'-trimethylthiourea, N, N, N ',
N'-tetramethylthiourea and ethylenethiourea. The reaction between the chloromethyl compound and the thiourea can be achieved by simply heating the combined reaction components, if desired, in the presence of a diluent such as. B. water. If the reaction is carried out in the presence of water, the new dye can be isolated by precipitation with acetone and filtering off.
The subject of the present patent is a process for the production of a new dye which is characterized in that bis-chloromethyl-p-toluidino-acedianthrone is treated with tetramethylthiourea. The reaction on which this process is based proceeds according to the following reaction equation

The new dye is a brown powder that is soluble in water to form a yellow-brown solution.
Example: 30 parts of bis-chloromethyl-p-toluidino-acedianthrone are mixed with 120 parts of tetramethylthiourea and 1.20 parts of water, and the mixture is stirred for half an hour at 85-90 ° C. In this way he kept brown solution is cooled down to 60 C and mixed with 500 parts of acetone. The mixture is cooled to 25 ° C. The precipitated product is filtered off, washed with acetone and dried below 60.degree.
The product consists of a brown powder which dissolves in water to form a yellow-brown solution and which produces yellow-brown dyeings and prints with good fastness properties on cellulose fibers.
The starting material can be obtained as follows: 4.5 parts of p-toluidinoacedian- thron (which can be obtained by condensation of p-bromotoluene with aminoacedianthrone or by condensation of p-toluidine with nitro-acedianthrone) are obtained at 15 Dissolved up to 20 C in 55 parts of 96% sulfuric acid, whereupon 7 parts of 1,1'-dichloro dimethyl ether are added to the solution and the mixture is stirred at 15-20 C for 18 hours.
The mixture is poured onto ice, the product is filtered off, washed acid-free with water and dried in order to obtain a brown powder which consists largely of the bis-chloromethyl compound and which is in conc. Sulfuric acid dissolves to form a dark purple solution.
