Process and installation for the transformation of household waste and organic waste into fertilizing materials. The invention relates to the transformation of household refuse and organic waste into a fertilizing material by resorting to fermentation, and it relates to a process which facilitates and shortens the operation as well as to an installation for carrying out this process, which makes possible a mechanical implementation of said process under the best conditions of economic performance and hygiene.
Currently, household refuse is usually subjected to sorting and then accumulated in chambers where its transformation takes place, after which the resulting mass is crushed and removed from the chamber to be sent to the places of use.
According to the invention, the mass to be transformed, without any preliminary sorting, is reduced into small pieces and brought, in this state, into intimate contact with an oxidizing gas in a closed space in which the loading is carried out from above and the discharge from below and in which said mass undergoes fermentation.
In this way, the operation proceeds quickly and it can be carried out by the most suitable mechanical means of loading and unloading, carrying out the treatment of the material without any direct handling, so that the labor of # The work required is reduced to a minimum and it is not exposed to any danger from a hygienic point of view.
The installation for carrying out the method according to the invention comprises at least one chamber with, in its bottom, at least one opening capable of being closed, as well as means keys for the distribution of a gas therein, a loading station equipped with at least one crusher, conveying means in the upper region of the chamber for its loading - and conveying means arranged below the chamber for unloading its contents,
as well as a mobile apparatus mounted above the chamber to stir the mass resulting from the fermentation, thereby making it possible to drop it through the lower opening of the chamber.
The accompanying drawing shows, by way of example, one embodiment of an installation of this type. Fig. 1 is a schematic longitudinal section of the entire installation; fia, 2 to 4 show, respectively in side elevation, in plan and in end view, a group of chambers with the means of transport and the loading station; fig. 5 is a view on an enlarged scale of the portion of the loading station which comprises the crusher apparatus; fig. 6 is an enlarged cross section of a chamber;

fig. 13 shows separately, in side elevation, the apparatus which serves to stir the transformed mass; fig. 14 shows separately the bottom of a room with a closing device.
In the example of FIG. 1, the installation comprises a collection and loading station, indicated as a whole by I, and a certain number of fermentation chambers, the group of which, indicated by II, is endowed with transport means in the upper region and in the lower region, and a dump station indicated by III.
Station I comprises a collection pit 1 into which the material intended for processing: is poured from vehicles 2 and a crusher apparatus 3 to which the material is sent by taking it from the pit by usual excavating means 4. The crusher 3 may be of any type suitable for reducing, in a substantially uniform manner, the material into small pieces which are kept separate from one another, without forming a muddy mass, said crusher being provided, as is . already known, of magnetic means to separate the pieces of iron which could not be crushed.
The group of rooms. II, connected to the output of station I by means of a conveyor tape 5, comprises chambers 6 provided with openings capable of being closed both at the top and at the bottom, of conveyors indicated as a whole by 7 at the top and by 8 at the bottom and an overhead crane. 9 which can be taken anywhere in the group. The discharge station III consists of a conveyor 10 which receives the material from the group of chambers and conveys it to a depot or to vehicles.
Each installation usually comprises a group of chambers so as to be able to have chambers in the course of fermentation, others in the process of loading and others in the process of unloading, thus distributing the necessary work for the service of the whole installation. lation.
In the example shown, the installation comprises three -rows of chambers 6, one next to the other, with a triple loading station, so that in this case it is necessary to have recourse to longitudinal conveyors and transverse described below to be able to load all the chambers. However, the installation could have a smaller width, with a simplification of the mechanical means for loading.
In any case, as can be seen in fig. 2 to s and 6, 7, each chamber, such as 6, is limited below by a bottom 12 formed by inclined hopper walls which leave between them at least one opening 13 closed by a wall 14 capable of being removed.
In the upper region, each chamber is closed by doors 15 which can be operated from above.
Inside each chamber 6 are arranged, in a horizontal position, perforated tubes 16, distributed in the chamber in horizontal rows, offset from one another. Each tube 16 is preferably suspended, by means of brackets 17, from a beam 18 (FIG. 9), the ends of which are engaged in the side walls of the chamber, said beams possibly being those which serve to reinforce the building.
Each tube 16 is closed at one end, while at its opposite end it is connected to a branch 19 of a supply pipe 20 which terminates outside at a source of oxidizing gas (most often air. spherical atmo, possibly enriched with ozone). In the example shown, the pipes 20 are connected to motor-compressor groups 21 provided with heaters and ozonizers and to perform the supply in turn in the different chambers, there are operating valves. 22.
Each chamber also has at least one mouth 23 connected, through conduits 24 provided with man # uvr e 25, with a vacuum cleaner 26 for the discharge to the outside of the gases which are released during the fermentation.
In order to transport the material to be treated into the chamber where the treatment is to take place, the group of chambers is provided, at the top and on one side, with a longitudinal belt conveyor 27, to which the main feeder 5 ends.
On the group of chambers is mounted mobile, on rails 28, a transverse bridge 9 which carries a conveyor 29 intended to receive the material from the longitudinal conveyor 27 and to unload it laterally at the desired location.
For the passage of the material from the longitudinal conveyor 27 to the transverse conveyor 29 and from the latter to the chamber below, the tape deflector device is used which is shown in figs. 10, 11 and 12.
As can be seen in these figures, the endless channel 27 or 29 of the conveyor is deflected at one place to form a projection below which takes place the upper end of an inclined channel 30, 31 arranged transversely to the longitudinal direction of the corresponding tape.
Each of these deflection groups is formed essentially by a pair of rollers 32, '33 on which the tape is guided, this pair of rollers being mounted on a carriage 34 for the longitudinal conveyor and 35 for the transverse conveyor.
At the point of the path where the carriage 34 or 35 is placed, the material transported by the strip 27 or 29 is poured, as a result of the deflection created by the rollers 32, 33, on the lower portion where the transverse channel inclined 30 or 31 is arranged, this channel bringing the material out of the tape and to the side thereof.
The carriage 34 of the conveyor 27 is associated with the overhead crane 9 and the channel 30 terminates on the conveyor belt 29, so that in each position of the bridge 9, the material carried by the ribbon 27 is unloaded on the conveyor belt 29.
As this conveyor is also provided with a diverter carriage 35 with inclined transverse channel 31, the material transported by the tape 29 will be discharged laterally outside said tape and it will fall inside the chamber which is located below. .
By moving the bridge 9 and the carriage 35 along said bridge, it is thus possible to pour the material into the various chambers of the group and at the desired location of each chamber.
Below each row of chambers of a group, and precisely below their lower openings 13 capable of being closed, there is a conveyor tape 36 which ends at the end of the group op laid at the station loading.
The conveyor tapes 36 unload, at one end, onto a transverse conveyor 37 which, at both ends, ends in a depot 38 and a station 39 for loading the means of transport. In this way, by reversing the direction of movement of the tape 37, it is possible to load the material on one or the other side of the group of chambers and thus serve two different stations.
In addition to the conveyor 29, the rolling bridge 9 which is located above the group of chambers, also comprises a 40 mobile cart on said bridge and on which takes place an apparatus intended to stir the mass resulting from the fermentation, so that it can fall, through the bottom openings 13 of the chambers 6, on the lower conveyor 36.
Such an unloading device is advantageously constituted by a vertical drill, as shown in FIG. 13, in which a body 41 mounted vertically movable in guides 42 can be raised and lowered by means of a winch 43 to cause its penetration into the mass; the body 41 comprises inside it a drill bit 44, the rod of which is rotated by one motor 45 with the aid of an appropriate transmission. The drill 44 is lifted and allowed to fall to cause its penetration into the mass, after which it will be rotated.
The drill 44 carries, pivoted at its lower end, deflecting fins 46 which, leaving the body 41, widen the area of action of the drill and stir up a remarkable volume of material which, due to this disintegration, can easily descend. down under the action of its own weight.
Although a vertical drill of the type mentioned is sufficient for the stated purpose, any other stirring apparatus capable of sufficiently stirring the mass to fall through the opening or openings in the bottom of the chamber can be used.
These openings are provided with doors which allow them to be closed before loading the chambers and which must be opened at the end of the treatment for the discharge.
In order to be able to open the doors without having to access the space occupied by the material, each door 14 can be formed, as shown schematically in FIG. 14, by two panels mounted movable in the horizontal direction, for example on rollers 47, and. connected to levers 48 which are caused to move equally and in the opposite direction to move apart or approach the two panels 14.
The apparatus 3 for reducing the material to be treated into small pieces is advantageously constituted by a multi-body mill which is very schematically represented in fig. 5 where 49 indicates the frame carrying the platforms on which roll grinding wheels 50 rotatably mounted at the end of the so-lidaires arms of the axial shaft 51 which can be rotated, for example by means of a transmission with angle wheels 52, by a control 53.
In an installation of the type described, the method according to the invention is carried out in the following way: The material to be treated is loaded into a specific chamber after having closed the bottom doors 14 and having brought above said chamber 1 'deviating apparatus 31, 35 of the overhead crane 9 which receives the material transported by the longitudinal conveyor 27.
The material which falls into the chamber can be distributed therein under any desired condition by suitably moving the bridge 9 in the longitudinal direction of the chamber and the diverter carriage 35 in the transverse direction of the chamber.
The material which falls into the chamber occupies the interior of the latter by coating in its mass the perforated tubes 16 which are sheltered from the direct action of the material by the beams 18 in which they are. suspended.
After filling the chamber, it is. closed at its upper part by means of the doors 15 and one introduces inside, under appropriate conditions and different from one case to the other, according to the nature and predominant composition of the material, according to the conditions of room temperature, etc., the oxidizing gas possibly enriched in ozone, heated and possibly humidified which is supplied by groups 21.
The chamber is then left to stand for the prescribed time, during which fermentation of the organic material takes place. Because of the passage through the mass of a proportionate amount of oxidizing fluid under the requisite conditions of heat and humidity, the fermentation process takes place throughout the mass of organic matter which results in a transformation. complete of the original mass in stable and solid substances.
During this period, the gases which are released inside the chamber can be discharged by putting the vents 23 in communication with the vacuum cleaner 26.
To unload the chamber, it is either green at the top, by removing the doors 15, as at the bottom, by removing the panels 14, after which we bring the overhead crane 9 above the chamber and we put in action the apparatus 41-46 which will be made to perform a combined action of penetration and rotation.
The mass is thus divided and stirred so that it can fall through the opening or the openings 13 included between the inclined walls 12 of the bottom.
The material then descends on the upper strand of the conveyor tape 36 which brings it to the discharge end of the group of chambers on the tape 37 and, consequently, to the deposit. 38 or loading stations 39, depending on the direction in which the tape 37 is driven.
During the whole treatment and during all the maneuvers, the material is always removed from direct contact with the workers who only have to operate the mechanical parts used to load the material into the various chambers and. to cause the discharge of these chambers.
Inside the active chamber, the oxidizing gas introduced causes rapid and complete closure both because of the extreme state of subdivision in which the gas is distributed inside the chamber as well as. because of the relative porosity of the mass of the material to be treated, which does not oppose too great a resistance to the upward movement of the gas streams.
This is due to the condition of the mass, which is formed by not too small pieces, and remaining separate from each other, without creating a compact or muddy mass, as well as to the distribution of the tubes for the 'gas supply throughout the interior of the chamber and to the horizontal position of said tubes because, in this way, each tube lets out a curtain of gas bubbles which occupy the interstices between the pieces of the mass.
For the reasons indicated, the fermentation takes place simultaneously throughout the whole mass and is complete in a much shorter period of time than that required in other installations; in general, the closure is completed in eight days.
