Die Herstellung des Hexamethy lentet.ra- mins wurde bisher meist bei Rauintempera- tur durcllo ;

Process for the industrial production of hexamethylenetetramine from gases containing formaldehyde and ammonia. For the production of Hexametliy ien- letramin, as it is z. B. is used as a hardener in the Ba kelitindustrie, from formaldehyde and ammonia, various methods have been proposed.
In general, one works with aqueous solutions of formaldehyde. and ammonia at room temperature with dissipation of the heat of action; an aqueous solution of the hexamethylenetetramine is then obtained, which must be evaporated in vacuo to obtain the solid material.
Go. If one starts with aqueous 30% foranaldelyd and 5% ammonia, then 5.8 kg of water are to be evaporated per kg of hexamines; the energy consumption is still considerable even if one takes place aqueous ammonia applies gaseous, as z.
As described in U.S. Patent No. 2449040.
The production of hexamethylene lentet.ram has so far mostly been carried out at room temperature;
e leads because one found. found that in aqueous solution the product splits again into ammonia and formaldehyde at considerably higher temperatures. (see USA patent 1r.2239619).
Against it. Isolation of Ilexanietli @ - lentetramine at high temperatures (115 to 135 "C) is possible when working with water-insoluble, non-volatile solvents.
In general, formaldehyde is produced industrially by passing a mixture of methanol or methanol-water with air over oxidation catalysts and subsequent condensation of the reaction gases. It would therefore be very advantageous to use the gaseous formaldehyde-containing reaction products formed in this reaction directly to be used for conversion with ammonia.
However, the gas reaction proceeds completely incompletely with a large increase in temperature. In addition, the product settles in solid crusts that are very difficult to remove and make continuous production very difficult.
It has therefore already been proposed that the gases containing formaldehyde be introduced into water or alcohol at the same time as ammonia in the cold or at slightly elevated temperatures.
It has now been found that hexamethyl.eiitetrainin atis formaldehyde-containing, gases and ammonia can be produced by reacting the reactants in a saturated aqueous hexamethylenetetramine solution at boiling temperature,
the possibly entrained water and the water formed during the reaction escapes in vapor form and the hexamethylene lentetramine is separated out in solid form.
The yields obtained by this process are over 961 / o of theory. The reaction is expediently carried out continuously, the residence time of the product in the hot solution being relatively short,
