Process for the production of foil-like materials. The production of film-like materials of all types is known. Essentially, polyvinyl chloride compositions are used for this purpose, optionally with the addition of plasticizers, and also polyisobutylene, vulcanized rubber and the like. In the manufacture of such materials, one has mostly worked with water excluded.
When used in practice as covering materials, for example for floors and tables, however, the products mentioned and which have become known up to now have a number of disadvantages. For example, the polyvinyl chloride compounds have to be drawn off on rollers and calenders at high temperatures. Polyisobutylene or polyvinyl ether compounds have the disadvantage of insufficient oil resistance, while vulcanized rubber has the disadvantage of aging and the rather complex production method.
Polyvinyl acetate itself would have the advantage that it can be plasticized even at low temperatures, and the fact that it is oil-resistant and has a high binding force for fillers of all kinds makes it appear particularly suitable for the production of the above-mentioned covering compounds.
Up to now, however, it was not possible to obtain a usable film with the aid of polyvinyl acetate and the usual fillers, because the skin that formed on the roller had a surface that was too uneven, which made it impossible to use in practice. The low water swelling adhering to the polyvinyl acetates and the high swelling capacity of cellulosic fillers (wood flour, cork flour)
also brought considerable disadvantages in practice, because when cleaning or using this film, although aqueous liquids are not excluded, the water penetrates too quickly into the mass and causes changes in shape.
It has now been found that useful films that do not have these disadvantages can be produced by mixing fillers, an aqueous polyvinyl ester dispersion and hydrophobizing substances with one another and shaping the mixture obtained into films under pressure.
For example, the fillers can be treated with a solution of hydrophobizing substances in organic solvents, then mixed with an aqueous polyvinyl ester dispersion, optionally containing plasticizer, and the mixture shaped in the usual way under pressure to give films. This measure facilitates the formation of a smooth skin, for example on a roller, and thus a smooth surface structure, to an unusually high degree.
Suitable water repellants are, for example, wool grease, rosin, paraffin, ceresin, waxes, mineral oil, etc. When using wood flour from high-resin woods as a filler, the resin contained therein contributes to increasing the water repellant effect. The substances mentioned can be used alone or mixed with one another. The degree of water repellency to be selected depends on the characteristics. of the filler.
The generally known products can be used as organic solvents, such as esters, chlorinated hydrocarbons and the like. It is preferred to use methylene chloride because of the easy evaporation.
The organic and inorganic fillers are expediently mixed with the solution of the hydrophobizing agents mentioned in a mixer and mixed for some time, then the methylene chloride evaporates.
Following this pretreatment of the fillers takes place. the mixture with the binder. Examples of suitable binders are aqueous dispersions of polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl acetate / polyvinyl 1-chloride copolymers, polyvinyl chloride and the like in plasticized or non-plasticized form.
With plasticized polymers, softer and more elastic end products are achieved, with non-plasticized, on the other hand, rigid end products. The foils can accordingly be largely adapted to the later intended use in terms of their softness.
The mixture now produced is then subjected to a pressure treatment, for example in a press. It is preferably treated on a cold or moderately heated mixing roller, with a closed field very soon being formed due to the thermoplastic character of the binding agent. After complete plasticization and mixing, the mass is either peeled off directly from the roller as a film or processed as a doll on a galander in the usual way to form an endless film.
Another, simpler embodiment of the method consists in using the hydrophobizing substances not in the form of their solutions in organic solvents, but in the form of suspensions or emulsions: rosin and wool fat can serve not only as hydrophobizing substances, but also as emulsifiers . Other emulsifiers can also be used.
The hydrophobizing substances converted into suspension or emulsion form can be added to the mixture at any stage of the preparation, be it to the mixture of the fillers, to the aqueous polyvinyl ester dispersion or to the mixture of fillers -h aqueous polyvinyl ester dispersion.
The films obtained in this way are largely smooth and pliable and can already be used in this form for many practical purposes. In accordance with the diverse face directions, the foils can be subjected to various other mechanical processing processes on the calender or on presses, for example by embossing special surface structures (imitation grains, various types of patterns).
They can also be colored by the addition of dyes and provided with varnishes or paints to achieve special surface effects, experience an increase in gloss by applying wax emulsions and finally be printed. For use as a floor covering in roll form, a fabric or fiber underlay can also be applied in order to give the material an outwardly similar character to your linoleum.
The addition of aqueous polyvinyl ester dispersions gives the material an increased water content. This water content can be of certain importance for the character and the suppleness of the film insofar as a higher water content allows a soft, lower water content a harder film. By adding hygroscopic substances such as glycerine, the in some cases undesirable drying out and thus the hardening of the film can be largely delayed.
Example: 250 parts by weight of sawdust, 175 parts by weight of wood flour, 175 parts by weight of cork flour, 270 parts by weight of silica, 105 parts by weight of red iron oxide as fillers are mixed with a solution of 25 parts by weight of rosin, 15 parts by weight of mineral oil, 20 parts by weight of wool fat in 200 parts by weight of methylene chloride mixed well and then allowed to air dry.
After drying, the mixture is carried out with 285 parts by weight of a 5 percent aqueous polyvinyl acetate dispersion, 625 parts by weight of an aqueous dispersion containing 43% polyvinyl acetate and 11% dibutyl phthalate as a plasticizer.
This mixture is treated on a cold mixing roller with friction until the fur and pupa form. There is a slight warming and a plasticization of the mass. The doll is then drawn out into a film on a calender, the rollers of which have a temperature of about 40 to 50 ° C.
