Process for the preparation of a mixture of new pyrene condensation products. It was found that by the condensation of pyrene and phthalic anhy. drill or its derivatives new compounds can be obtained that are valuable intermediate products, especially in the manufacture of vat dyes.
The condensation of one molecule of pyrene with one molecule of phthalic anhydride with the formation of the monocarboxylic acid, mono- (o-carboxybenzoyl) pyrene, also called 1'yren-monophthaloyl acid, or with the formation of monophthaloyl pyrene is already known (compare JW Cook and LC Hewett. Chem. Soc. 1933, 400 or British Patent No. 366472).
H. Vollmann, H. Becker, M. Correll and Il. Streeck (Annalen der Chemie 531, 128) also showed that, in low yields, diphtaloyl-pyrene or a mixture of the isomers of the compound mentioned by heating PVC with an excess of phthalic anhydride in an AhiminiuinchloridjNatriiunchlorid melt to 150 to 160 C can be obtained.
It has now been found that by heating 1 mole of pyrene with at least 2 moles of phthalic anhydride in an inert solvent in the presence of aluminum chloride to a temperature between 50 and 100 ° C., a mixture of previously unknown dicarboxylic acids, namely isomeric pyrene diphtaloyl acids or .
Di- (o-carboxybenzoyl) pyrene is obtained. This mixture has the valuable property of being converted into dichinones in good yield by treatment with an acidic condensation agent with ring closure, which in alkaline sodium hydrosulfite solution give a brownish vat.
The mixture obtained consists of two components. 3,8-di- (o-carboxybenzoyl) -pyrene, light yellow crystals with a melting point of 305 to 310 ° C (with decomposition) and 3,10-di- (o-carboxybenzoyl) -pyrene, yellow crystals with a melting point of 325 ° C ( with decomposition).
The subject of the patent is a process for the production of a mixture of new pyrene condensation products, which is characterized in that one mole of pyrene is mixed with at least two moles of phthalic anhydride in an inert solvent in the presence of aluminum chloride to a temperature between 50 and 100 C and the end product is a mixture of the two isomers:
3,8-di- (o-carboxybenzoyl) pyrene, a substance with a melting point of 305 to 310 ° C. (with decomposition), and 3,10-di (o-carboxybenzoyl) pyrene, a substance with a melting point of. 325 C (with decomposition), which is to be used as an * intermediate in the manufacture of vat dyes.
The mixture obtained according to the invention consists of the two isomers with the formula I and II.
When carrying out the process according to the invention, the mixture is preferably heated to about 65 to 85 ° C. and the reaction mixture is kept at the temperature mentioned for one hour in order to obtain a satisfactory yield. Aluminum chloride is expediently used in excess of the theoretically required amount.
Tetrachloroethane and trichlorobenzene are particularly suitable as inert solvents.

Example 1: 40 g of pyrene and 70 g of phthalic anhydride were melted and 210 g of tetraclorethylene were added to the liquid mixture. 130 g of powdered aluminum chloride were then gradually added to the reaction grit in small portions at a temperature of about 50 ° C.
The whole was heated to 70 ° C. for 7 hours. After adding dilute hydrochloric acid as a decomposition agent, the tetrachloroethane was distilled off. The residue was washed with water, dissolved in hot dilute sodium hydroxide solution and the solution was filtered. The mixture of dicarboxylic acids was precipitated by adding hydrochloric acid to the filtrate. The suction filtered precipitate was washed out with hot acetic acid to remove the current monocarboxylic acids.
Example 2: 70 g of phthalic anhydride and 150 g of powdered material were heated to 70 ° C. with 320 g of trichlorobenzene, with 40 g of pyrene being gradually added to the mixture. The mixture was heated to 80 ° C. for 1 hour and then decomposed with cold, dilute hydrochloric acid. The solvent was removed with steam and the residue was dissolved in dilute sodium hydroxide solution.
The solution obtained was filtered and hydrochloric acid was added to the hot filtrate. The precipitate was filtered off with suction, washed out with water and treated with 500 g of hot acetic acid for the purpose of complete removal of present -ionoarboxylic acids. The residue consisting of un dissolved diacids was filtered off while hot.
In Examples 1 and 2 the yield was about 80% by weight of the amount of pyrene used. The product is a mixture of about 113 of compound I and 213 of compound II.
