Parties
Copolymère acétate-chlorure de en poids
vinyle ( VYNV-I ) 1000
Phtalate dioetyle 500
Method and device for manufacturing a flexible film, in which is incorporated at least
a pattern, and film obtained by this process.
The present invention relates to a process for manufacturing a flexible film, in which at least one pattern is incorporated, a device for carrying out this process, and the film obtained by this process.
Hitherto, many attempts have been made to print patterns on flexible or plastic films or sheets, but various difficulties have been encountered. For example, it is very difficult to get patterns (drawings, images, etc.) to occupy exact locations because of the flexibility and elasticity of the film. In addition, the solvents generally used in inks and other products, which are used to print these patterns, frequently attack the film, hence certain undesirable effects. Difficulties have also been experienced in obtaining that the printed patterns remain permanently on the film.
By the method according to the present invention, the design is not printed on the film, but has been produced with it and is incorporated therein, which makes it possible to avoid these drawbacks.
Said method is characterized in that there is applied to the surface of a movable support, which advances in a continuous manner, at least one pattern consisting of a film-forming and fluid material, and which adheres only slightly to the surface of the support, a continuous layer of a film-forming material is then applied to this pattern which, after having dried in contact with the material constituting the pattern, adheres thereto, said layer is dried and the film formed of this layer and the pattern or patterns incorporated therein.
This process makes it possible to obtain a film bearing patterns in several colors, the patterns of different colors constituting the different parts of a design by superposition or juxtaposition. The pattern can be made permanently integral with the film, despite the mechanical effects which stress the surface thereof.
The pattern can be incorporated into one side of the film, so that its visible side is flush with that side of the film. Unlike films bearing raised patterns, such a film can undergo considerable wear without the pattern being appreciably damaged. In addition and compared to films with raised patterns, the pattern of a film obtained in accordance with the present invention is more resistant to solvents which accidentally fall on it due to the fact that it is incorporated into the film.
The process also produces a film free from internal tensions and which can be laid flat on a flat surface without twisting, curling or assuming an irregular shape.
The side of the film opposite to that which bears the pattern may exhibit undulations.
The invention will now be described with reference to the appended drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 shows, in plan, a film in one side of which is incorporated a decorative pattern and of which the opposite side is smooth.
Fig. 2 shows, in cross section and on a larger scale, this same film, the thickness of the pattern being greatly exaggerated.
Figs. 3, 4 and 5 show, respectively in plan, in view from below and in cross section (as in FIG. 2), a film in one side of which a decorative pattern is incorporated and of which the opposite side has corrugations.
Fig. 6 shows, in cross section, a conveyor carrying a decorative pattern to which a film-forming material is applied.
Fig. 7 shows, from the hemematical side, a device for carrying out the method according to the invention.
Fig. 8 shows, in plan and on a larger scale, one of the rollers of the device of FIG. 7.
Fig. 9 shows, in elevation, a bag, one face of which is formed using a film obtained in accordance with the invention.
A great number of film-forming materials can be used to carry out the present process: synthetic resins, eellulose derivatives, natural or synthetic rubber, in the form of dispersions, emulsions or solutions.
The device shown in FIG. 7, and which comprises a conveyor 20, which advances in a continuous manner and on which the film is formed. This conveyor is constituted by an endless belt, for example made of metal, such as nickel.
It would also be possible to use a strip unwinding from one reel to wind up on another reel and made of a solid and relatively heavy paper, one or both sides of which bear a strongly adherent coating, the smooth side.
The conveyor 20 passes, at station A, over a series of tension rollers 21, 22 and 23 and then passes over an engraved roller 24. This roller is mounted so that it is partially immersed in a film-forming substance 25, contained in a container 26 and that it is driven in the dextrorotatory direction by the movement of the conveyor.
Fig. 8 shows this engraved roll 24 in plan. We see that he wears a hollow pattern. This pattern may have various shapes and may include, in particular, several small designs, letters, numbers, very thin lines such as lace, a silhouette, s points such as a halftone image or many other shapes. again. The pattern can be continuous or discontinuous, that is to say that its parts may or may not be separated by intervals.
The film-forming material can be formed in various ways. By way of example and in the case where one wants to obtain a white pattern, it can contain a vinyl resin such as an acetate-vinyl chloride copolymer, for example the product brand VYNS, a plasticizer such as dioctyl phthalate , a solvent such as methyl ethyl ketone and a pigment such as titanium dioxide.
These substances can be mixed in the following proportions:
Parts
Acetate-chloride copolymer of by weight
vinyl (VYNS) 100
Dioctyl phthalate 33
Methyl ethyl ketone 1000
Titanium dioxide 50
As the roller 24 rotates in the film forming material 25, it receives a coating of this material. A squeegee 27 is pressed against the roller, so as to remove therefrom any film-forming material which is on the regions other than those which are recessed and which correspond to the pattern.
When the conveyor 20 passes over the roll 24, this coating of film-forming material is applied to the underside of the conveyor in a surface which corresponds to the shape of the pattern to be obtained. The conveyor then passes over a roller, guide 28 then over a heating roller 29 which serves to dry the pattern, all a. less partially.
This drying can, in certain cases, be eliminated. Roll 29 can be heated by a series of tubes through which steam passes and which are housed longitudinally in this roll or by other means.
If desired, several designs can be printed on the carrier in different colors. Various means can be used to apply the pattern to the conveyor, for example an apparatus of the rotogravure type or the like.
The conveyor, carrying the pattern, then passes through a coating apparatus so that a layer of a film-forming material is formed on this pattern. This layer is continuous, so that it extends beyond the pattern and is in direct contact with the conveyor in parts of it.
The conveyor is driven by a motor roller 30, coated with rubber and which rotates in the levorotatory direction. With this roller 30 cooperates a roller 31 which is clamped against the upper face of the conveyor and which preferably has a smooth metallic surface.
This roller 31 also rotates in the levorotatory direction and therefore opposes the advancement of the conveyor, but, since the roller 30 has a rubber surface and the roller 31 a smooth metal surface, the roller 30 grips the conveyor and does so. advance to the left, while the face of the roller 31 simply slides over the upper face of the conveyor and the pattern carried by it.
A roller 32, preferably having a smooth metal surface, is established to the left of the roller 31 above the conveyor to cooperate with said roller 31. It is established near the latter without being tangent to it, just as it is not is not tangent to the transporter. This roller rotates in the levorotatory direction.
A trough 33, formed in part by the rollers 31 and 32 and by means not shown, which form the end walls thereof, contains film-forming material and serves to apply this material to the roll 31. This film-forming material will constitute the film-forming material. body of the film.
If it is desired, which is usually the case, that the pattern not be spread further, a diluent or solvent will be used for this film-forming material which does not appreciably attack the material constituting the pattern or. which is not a good solvent for this material.
The material, which serves to constitute the body of the film, should have an adhesive affinity for the material of which the pattern is made, and preferably fully bond to it. On the other hand, the pattern and the body of the film should stick only slightly to the conveyor so that they can be easily detached from it.
The film-forming material used to form the film body is, for example, an organosol of an acetate-vinyl chloride copolymer, containing a plasticizer, a diluent having a relatively high boiling point and a diluent having a boiling point. relatively low. The acetate-vinyl chloride copolymer is advantageously the product brand VYNV-I. As a plasticizer, dioctyl phthalate can be used. Xylol or a similar product, for example the Solvesso brand product, can be used as diluents having a relatively high boiling point.
As a low boiling point diluent, it is possible to use a petroleum distillation product, for example the product brand Apcoo, which contains 91/2% of aromatic components and whose 5 / o boils below 123 C , 95% below 165 C. These substances can be mixed, advantageously, in the following proportions:
Parts
Acetate-chloride copolymer of by weight
vinyl (VYNV-I) 1000
Dioethyl phthalate 500
Xylol or Solvesso 200 Apco 490
The various constituents are ground in a ball or hammer mill for a time and at a temperature which are determined by the nature and the proportions of the constituents.
For example, the time can be around 24 hours, and the temperature around 38 C.
The organosol is contained in a mixing tank 34 and supplied to the trough 33 by a nozzle 34. A uniform coating of organosol is thus applied to the roller 31 and is distributed, in the form of a continuous layer, by this. roller on the upper face of the conveyor 20, which carries the pattern.
Fig. 6 shows, in cross section, a part of the conveyor 20 carrying the pattern and on which the film-forming material has been applied. It should be noted that this figure does not show the lower part of the conveyor nor the upper part of the film-forming material layer. On the other hand, it shows how the pattern and the continuous layer of film-forming material which covers it rest on the upper face of the conveyor during the formation of the film.
In the case where it is desired to obtain a film which bears a pattern incorporated in one face and whose opposite face is smooth, the conveyor passes through a drying and baking oven and the film is then detached from this conveyor. On the other hand, to produce a film whose face opposite to that which bears the pattern is corrugated, as shown in FIGS. 3, 4 and 5, the conveyor passes through an oven 36, of short length (FIG. 7), in which the film is exposed to a determined temperature for a short time. After that, a swelling agent is made to act on the film, using a nozzle or sprinkler 37. In some cases, the wavy or wrinkled effect can be obtained without the intervention of means of. particular heating.
With respect to the complete details of the production process of such a corrugated surface and with regard to the type of the swelling agent to be used, reference is made to patent No. 281140.
The conveyor then passes into an oven 38 comprising compartments 38a and 38b reserved respectively for drying and cooking and which operate in the usual manner.
To the left of the oven is shown a vacuum apron 39 which comprises a roller 40 driven by means not shown, a guide roller 41, an idle roller 42 and a perforated belt 43 passing over these rollers.
The conveyor 20 rests on the belt 43 and means (not shown) are provided to create a depression under the perforated belt so that the conveyor is sucked towards it. As the belt advances to the left in fig. 7, it drives the transporter in the same direction.
The conveyor then passes over a guide roller 44. A roller 45 is provided which cooperates with the preceding one to detach the film from the conveyor. This film is then wound up on a reel 46.
The conveyor bypasses a driven guide roller 47, and a rotating brush 48 is provided opposite this roller to clean the conveyor so that the latter is ready to start its circuit again.
In the film thus produced, the pattern is effectively incorporated into one side of the film and its apparent surface is flush with said side of the film.
For various practical reasons, it is preferable that the decorative pattern has a thickness greater than 0.000025 mm and less than 0.025 mm. The film body has a thickness which is preferably not more than 0.25mm and which, on the other hand, can be very small, which is one of the advantages of the process.
If it is not desired to obtain undulations, streaks or wrinkles, in the installation described the furnace 36 and the spray nozzle 37 will be omitted.
The body of the film may contain a fluorescent or phosphorescent material and the decorative pattern a relatively opaque material so that the film acts as a cover or screen to prevent or decrease the transmission of rays from the fluorescent or phosphorescent material.
The body of the film and the motif can be in contrasting colors.
It is also possible to provide patterns having different colors and which are all incorporated in the same film. Various combinations of fillers and pigments can be introduced into the materials constituting the pattern and body of the film.
To obtain a colored pattern having a lively and vibrant appearance, a high concentration of dyes can be incorporated into the material which constitutes it. In this regard, one of the advantages of the process is that the pattern can be made of a material roughly similar to that of the film body, but the specific weight of which is lower. For example, these two materials may both contain acetate-vinyl chloride copolymers, but which have different average molecular weights. These copolymers have the remarkable peculiarity that they adhere strongly to each other, while the one with the lower molecular weight is more soluble than that with the higher molecular weight.
Since a high resin concentration is important for the pattern so that it can bind a high amount of coloring matter, it is possible in this way to obtain rich and vivid colors by introducing large amounts of resin into the color. the solution with the help of which the pattern is formed.
The motif and the body of the film can also be made up of materials of the same nature, except for their colors. In this way, they have the same melting point and there is no risk of detaching the motif from the body of the film, for example when you run a hot iron over the film.
Similar results can be obtained by using different substances which have roughly the same melting point.
If it is desired that the pattern spreads out, it suffices to use, for the film-forming material which serves to constitute the body of the film, a good solvent for the substance forming the pattern. Various aesthetic effects can thus be obtained.
In the case where it is desired to constitute the body of the film using a solution in place of an organosol and when it is not desired to obtain a spreading effect of the pattern, the solvent used must have little effect. action on the substance forming the pattern. This can be achieved by using for the body and for the pattern polymers or copolymers which are similar but which have different average molecular weights and using the heavier product for the pattern.
The method according to the invention can be combined with a method for manufacturing articles such as bags or envelopes. Such an article is shown in FIG. 9. It comprises two walls made up of two films joined by their edges on three sides.
In order to obtain such an article, one begins by preparing a film according to the invention. A coating of a substance which does not stick to the film so to speak is applied to the film, which is on the conveyor, leaving the edges bare. This non-adhesive coating can then be dried. Another Co11 of a film-forming material, which may be the same as that used to form the first film, is then applied to the non-adhesive coating and to the uncovered portions of the first film, the assembly may then be dried, baked and detached from the conveyor, if you do not want to form waves on the second film.
On the other hand, if it is desired to obtain such corrugations, a swelling agent is applied to the visible face of the second film, before its complete drying, as explained in detail in the patent.
No. 281140. Further details regarding the manufacture of such articles are given in Patent No. 288225.
One can obtain in a similar manner an assembly intended for the manufacture by simple cutting of several articles of this kind.
The invention also makes it possible to obtain labels which bear incorporated patterns.
For this purpose, in accordance with the invention, a film comprising. a series of identical patterns, which are cut in suitable places.
It is also possible to cover the film obtained according to the invention with another film on the side where the incorporated patterns are located.
This latter film can be so thin that it is not self-lifting.
Finally, it is possible to manufacture a film in one face of which is incorporated at least one decorative pattern and of which the other face bears at least one decorative pattern in relief. In this case, one starts by forming a film in which the pattern or patterns are incorporated by the process described above, and before detaching this film from the conveyor, at least one pattern is printed on its upper face. Alterations in the relative matches or overlays between the embedded and raised patterns can be provided to achieve the desired useful or aesthetic effects.
It is intended to be appropriate to choose the film-forming materials, from which the decorative pattern and the body of the film are obtained, that, when these parts have dried, that which constitutes the pattern is more elastic than the supporting part. In this way, the useful life of the film is improved in addition to the fact that the pattern is incorporated therein.
