<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

Le papier kraft incrusté et tel qu'il a été défini précédemment peut être obtenu , conformément à la présente invention , soit : a) par fabrication en une seule épaisseur , en partant de papier kraft ou de pâte kraft d'une épaisseur quelconque et telle que la résistance et la consistance du produit obtenu soient conformes à celles que l'on désire obtenir ; b) par fabrication du papier incrusté en partant de plusieurs épaisseurs de papier kraft ou de pâte kraft , les diverses épaisseurs étant réunies par collage ou par enduit avant laminage ;
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
Pour réaliser de telles fabrications, on pourra choisir les dispositions des machiner qui sont schématiquement repré- sentées aux dessins , .La. machine représentée sur -La Il;
.9
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>
<Desc/Clms Page number 13>
<Desc/Clms Page number 14>
<Desc/Clms Page number 15>
<Desc/Clms Page number 16>
<Desc/Clms Page number 17>
<Desc/Clms Page number 18>
1 tous les divers profils géométriques des saillies ne sont cités qu'à titre d'exemple et que l'on pourra donner aux incrustations des profils , des dimensions et une dis- position quelconques par un assemblage de dessins géomè- triques de toute nature susceptibles de former des lignes d'incrustations séparées par des plats et pouvant remplacer lescannelures qui forment l'ondulation des papiers ondulés connus ;
2 que les divers moyens de constitution des machines qui viennent d'être décrits et qui sont montrés sur las dessins annexés n' ont été cités qu'à titre d'exemple et¯ que des modifications pourront y être apportées sans que l'économie générale de l'invention s'en trouve altérée ;
<Desc/Clms Page number 19>

"Kraft" paper encrusted with projections of various shapes and method of making this paper.
The present invention relates to the new industrial product consisting of a "Kraft" paper encrusted, on one side, with projections of various shapes and intended to replace, in various uses, the known corrugated paper, the inlays being made, without gluing. , on a single layer of "extra strong" Kraft paper of 180/200 gr. per square meter approximately. Another subject of the invention is the manufacturing process which makes it possible to obtain this inlaid Kraft paper.
This new inlaid paper can be made with all kinds of paper, of whatever nature or composition to form an inlaid corrugation, serving as a replacement for fluting, as "bumper" for fragile item shipments. , or for any other use.
The inlaid paper produced in accordance with the invention is obtained with a single thickness of Kraft paper by means of inlays of small rectangles profiled in "point of.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
diamond "or" rounded profiles "such as those shown in Figures 1 to 8 attached and which are staggered, so as to form lines with flat intervals, these lines serving to replace the grooves of known corrugated paper.
Such incrustations cannot withstand the flattening forces which they will have to undergo only as much as they will be made with an extra-strong "Kraft" paper, thin inlaid or embossed papers have already been manufactured, in fact. these papers can only offer precarious protection and cannot, under any circumstances, be used as outer packaging.
One of the characteristics of the invention is therefore the new application of Kraft paper in force of 200 grams for obtaining extra-solid inlaid paper.
The inlaid paper which is the subject of the invention can moreover make it possible to replace with a single sheet of inlaid Kraft paper the corrugated paper which consists of a sheet of corrugated straw paper glued to a flat sheet.
The small inlays of the paper are obtained by embossing, or by stamping under pressure by means of a profiled cylinder, suitable for the protruding pattern that is to be reproduced, this pattern being able to present the most varied shapes to form the grooves and be, for example, rectangular, square, triangular, round, oval or affect any other geometric shape (the inlay process remaining the same) to form lines of projections replacing the grooves of the usual corrugated paper.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The manufacturing can be done cold or hot, with or without spraying steam on the paper, the manufacturing process remaining the same.
The inlaid paper object of the invention is characterized by the special shape of the inlays intended to form grooves, by the joining of small rectangles, for example protruding profiles, arranged in parallel in the form of staggered rows to form an assembly replacing the grooves.
Whatever the form chosen for the small repelled projections, the characteristics of the invention cannot be altered; they cannot be heard either, whatever the method of manufacture envisaged, whether these relief patterns are obtained by means of flat presses or by rotary cylinders forming male and female dies, serving to obtain the desired shapes, either in a steam jet, either under wet pressure or by sizing under pressure in the pulp of the paper, when these various means will allow the manufacture of the new industrial product which is the object of the invention,
that is to say of a paper in which grooves are formed by an assembly of small embossed patterns in relief on one side or on both sides of the paper
The invention also provides specific means of application of the application of the method for manufacturing said paper with a view to obtaining the new industrial product consisting of the paper in question.
These have the following characteristics:
1 To prevent tearing of the paper as it passes between the teeth of the rolling mill which could occur if used in a dry state.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
When the inlaid paper is to be manufactured in single thickness, the paper (or paper pulp) is previously covered, on one of its faces, with a coating, primer or glue intended to give it the flexibility necessary to obtain good lamination and, after drying, a solid coating giving the finished paper greater impact resistance.
2 When the inlaid paper must be made in two or more thicknesses, one of the contact faces of one of the sheets of paper (or of paper pulp) to be assembled under the rolling mill is covered with a coating, primer or glue intended to give it the flexibility necessary to obtain good lamination and, after drying, a solid body giving the finished paper greater impact resistance.
3 The paper (or the paper pulp thus prepared then passes between two rolling mill rolls bearing respectively, in hollow and in relief, the protrusions which one wishes to obtain on the finished paper.
4 In the case of manufacturing single-ply inlaid paper, the previously coated sheet, as stated under 1) is led under the rolling mill by a heated sheet which passes between the rolls of the rolling mill at the same time as the paper and which carries inlays identical so that it can pass, by meshing, between the two cylinders, said heated sheet simultaneously performing the drying of the paper.
5 In the case of manufacturing inlaid paper in several thicknesses, the sheets assembled together by the coating layer are led under the
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
rolling mill by any suitable means and then pass over a suitably heated cylinder which ensures the drying of the encrusted sheets.
The invention further provides that the manufacturing process can be applied, with the following characteristics, to sheets of Kraft pulp "coming out of the so-called" pulp press "machine and which are still wet or semi-wet.
1 The sheets of "Kraft" dough coming out of the loaf known as "dough press" and still wet or semi-wet, receive by spraying under pressure over their entire surface, a liquid or powdery primer, the nature of which may vary depending on the quality of the desired primer for the finished inlaid paper.
2 The spraying of 1 primer, as defined under 1, is obtained by providing spray booms arranged transversely to the strips of paper coming out of the "Kraft" pulp machine, the number of booms being able to vary depending on the desired degree of impregnation
3 The sheets of "Kraft" dough thus prepared then pass directly over the cylinder which must form on them, by pressure, the desired encrustations, encrustations that the said cylinder itself bears on its periphery, but in relief, on a sheet of sheet fixed, by welding or otherwise, to a second sheet of smooth sheet metal which forms the body of the cylinder.
4 The cylinder in question under 3 acts on the paste to be encrusted in combination with a compressor cylinder lined with hardened rubber and bearing, by hollow molding in said rubber, depressions corresponding to the projections of the encrusting cylinder
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
In another embodiment of the apparatus, the compressor cylinder referred to under 4 can be replaced by three cylinders, one of which is central, acts as a compressor and acts in the same way as that which is. defined under 4, the other two, arranged on either side of the first, being placed, not in close contact with the encrustation cylinder,
but at a short distance from it; in this case, the three cylinders are enveloped by an endless band of semi-hard rubber which bears the designs that the inlay cylinder bears in relief. This device allows a progressive attack of the paper pulp for stamping encrustations and prevents tearing which can occur when the paper is only stamped by pressing a single cylinder on the encrustation cylinder.
6 In a third embodiment, the compressor cylinder, instead of being made or lined with hard rubber, is made of soft, smooth rubber, the stamping of the paper being done by simply pushing in the relief designs. in soft rubber.
7 The compressor cylinder is, at the same time, a dryer, that is to say that it comprises, inside a heating device which can be constituted by a continuous injection of steam, the importance of which may vary according to the angular speed of the cylinder and the nature of the primer with which the paper has been impregnated.
8 The paper, encrusted and dried is then wound on small rollers, this winding being carried out without clamping to avoid the flattening of the encrusted paper.
9 The projection of a powder primer, such as it has
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
defined under 1) can be done before the encrustation or immediately after the passage of the dough between the cylinders on the paper resting on the drying cylinder, the powder (which can be starch or any other suitable product) baking on the paper as it dries.

The encrusted kraft paper and as defined above can be obtained, in accordance with the present invention, either: a) by manufacturing in a single layer, starting from kraft paper or kraft pulp of any thickness and such that the strength and consistency of the product obtained conform to those desired; b) by manufacturing the inlaid paper starting from several layers of kraft paper or kraft pulp, the various thicknesses being joined by gluing or coating before rolling;
c) by manufacturing an inlaid paper consisting of a light-strength kraft pulp, sized or joined by a
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
coated with another "Dupleix" paper of a different composition, based on cellulose of any kind, such as straw cellulose, chestnut cellulose and wood celluloses of all kinds which may exist in commerce, in nature the cellulose chosen depending only on the thickness, the flexibility or the qualities of anti-impact felting that one wants to obtain for the inlaid kraft paper produced,
this latter method of manufacture having the advantage of having a lower cost price than the previous ones.
Whatever the paper or whatever the cellulose pulp used for these fabrications, the process remains the same, whether it is to make an inlaid paper made of pure kraft pulp, or that we want to obtain such a paper with any pulp or paper lining that may be chosen and, for example, pulps of pine, fir, poplar, aspen, chestnut or cellulose of various species ( celluloses of straw, reed, bamboo, rags, old paper, ebc ...) and, in general,
of uncooked or new pulp or cellulose and of current sale in stationery
When we want to obtain a lower cost price, we can, for example, glue or join together, by means of a coating, lighter kraft paper with straw paper or chestnut cellulose or with a pulp. 'any wood which may be suitable for this manufacture, the manufacturing process which will be described below remaining the same in all cases
To carry out such fabrications, it is possible to choose the arrangements of the machines which are schematically represented in the drawings. machine represented on -The Il;
.9
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
that can be applied to the. manufacture \ the inlaid kraft paper in a single thickness with exterior glue coating and the machine shown in fig.10 which may be suitable for the manufacture of inlaid paper in several thicknesses.
Of course, the machines shown in the drawings, as well as the various components of which they are made, are cited only by way of example; their various mechanisms or organizations, as well as the manufacturing process, can be modified as needed without the choice of special means for obtaining the inlaid paper described above being able to affect the economy of the invention.
If dry kraft paper was used to make the inlaid paper, this paper would risk tearing when passing under the rolling mill, due to the strong pressure exerted by the cylinders to give the paper the necessary relief. inlays.
For this reason, instead of operating on dry paper, it is better to go over one side of the kraft paper or on the kraft pulp, before their entry; under the rolling mill, a coating or any bonding primer, the nature of this coating or this adhesive may vary according to the type of manufacture.
In the case of manufacturing single-ply inlaid paper, the quick-drying filler or primer is then dried almost instantly by means of an endless inlaid sheet on which the sheet rests and which passes at the same time as the paper under the teeth of the rolling mill, the endless sheet being driven by means of
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
two large drive pulleys in which can be installed heating cylinders intended to give the sheet the temperature necessary for drying the paper.
The coating or primer applied as has been said on one side of the manufactured paper will allow two different results to be obtained:
1 First, this coating will soften the kraft paper or kraft pulp, giving it the flexibility it needs to undergo lamination and to be able to stretch more easily.
2 Secondly, when dry, the coating will form a solidified primer on the paper which will give the manufactured product more consistency and more impact resistance, preventing the flattening of the incrustations.,
When it is desired to obtain a more solid inlaid paper, the enauit or the primer can be applied between two layers of kraft paper or of kraft pulp, such a paper exhibiting for manufacture, the advantage of not having any exterior plaster.
As can be seen in the drawings (fig. 9): a machine intended for the manufacture of kraft paper encrusted in a single thickness of paper or any cellulose pulp consists mainly of a rolling mill formed of two cylinders 1 and 2 , one of these cylinders carrying recesses in the shape of the projections that it is desired to obtain, while the other cylinder carries these same projections in relief.
The rolling mill is served by an endless sheet 3 which also carries recesses or projections corresponding to the incrustations that one wants to obtain on the paper; this sheet has the function of rapidly drying the paper and, for this purpose, it is heated by any suitable means, retort for example by means of the heating cylinder 11 or by heating cylinders
<Desc / Clms Page number 12>
housed in pulleys 4 and 5, the rotation of which determines its movement.
The sheet 3, on which the coated paper comes to rest, passes at the same time as the strip 6 (the paper under the teeth of the rolling mill; it then carries the inlaid paper with it until complete drying obtained before winding the inlaid paper on the coil 7.
To coat the paper before lamination, we can use a glue roller 8 driven by a rotating movement, soaked in a bath of glue or any primer chosen to impregnate the strip of paper which unwinds by resting on it and give the paper or kraft pulp the flexibility to pass under the teeth of the rolling mill without tearing it.
When the inlaid paper is to be manufactured in several thicknesses, the machine which is shown in fig.10 and which is intended for production in two thicknesses can be applied for this production.
In this case, only one of the paper strips is impregnated with coating by the glue roller 8, the second strip 6 'coming to meet with the first against the coating layer; lesdeux strips to be glued then pass between lescylindres 1 and 2 of the rolling mill and the assembly is dried on a drying cylinder 9 suitably heated.
In some cases, if the same degree of humidity is to be obtained from the two strips of paper, they will both be coated with a primer on their contact faces.
The dry encrusted paper is then wound on a spool 10.
It is easy to realize that after passing
<Desc / Clms Page number 13>
on the dryer cylinder 9, there is no need to crainore, in the case of manufacture in several layers, any sticking of the paper wound on the reel 10, since the coating has been applied between the two layers of paper.
It is understood that the embodiments of the invention which have just been described and which are shown schematically in the appended drawings have been cited only by way of example and that any other machine device allowing to obtain the same result can be applied, which one can use, for the manufacture with inlaid paper, not only kraft paper in one or more thicknesses, but also any wood pulp or cellulose whatever their nature suitable for this production and that, in the machines shown schematically,
any modifications relating to the nature and the particular organization of the organs described may be made without any number of materials or machines being able to affect the characteristics of the invention.
In the machines of fig.9 and 10 the sizing of the sheets intended to form the inlaid paper was obtained by passing the strips on a roll passing through 'a tray filled with glue or primer.
On the other hand, these machines included fluted cylinders intended to form the encrustation on the paper and dryer cylinders whose function was to dry the paper produced after it had passed between the rolls of the encrustation cylinders.
The result of this arrangement was that the paper used in these machines had to be taken from reels of finished paper and therefore already. dried; this paper was therefore
<Desc / Clms Page number 14>
subjected to two drying cycles which took away some of its quality; on the other hand, the need to provide a special drying cylinder led to a complication of the machinery.
According to fig.ll a 15 it is no longer with dry finished paper that the feed strips of the machine are formed, but with the sheets formed by the "kraft" pulp still in the wet state and such that it comes out of the dough press machine.
The strips of Numidian pulp leaving the latter machine receive on their surface a sprayed finish, this finish possibly being a liquid or a pulverulent material of any suitable nature following the characteristics which one wishes to obtain for the finished inlaid paper.
The spraying members are schematically represented on lesfig. 11 and 12; as can be seen in these drawings, they can be constituted by ramps 1 having perforations towards their lower part and which are supplied under pressure (for example under steam pressure) by the finishing material.
The ramps 1 are arranged transversely to the strip which is to receive the primer and their number can be any; they can of course project the sprayed material only on the surfaces of the bands which are to come into contact or else on these surfaces and on the exterior surfaces of said bands.
The strips of dough coming out of the press and which are still wet are perfectly impregnated by the material projected before their passage between the
<Desc / Clms Page number 15>
conformation of inlays.
, The rolling mill formed by these rolls comprises a large roll 2 acting in combination with a roll 3 of smaller dimensions, Roll 2 is both encruster and dryer; it is lined over its entire periphery with a sheet 4 which bears in relief the inlays which are to be printed on the paper; this sheet 4 is fixed for example by welding on an inner sheet 5 of greater thickness which constitutes the actual wall of the cylinder.
The thicknesses of the sheets 4 and 5 can vary according to the dimensions of the cylinder 2 or according to the nature of the materials to be treated.
Internally, the cylinder 2 comprises a heating device, this device being able to be constituted by a pipe 6 bringing in the steam which comes to spread throughout the capacity of the cylinder through orifices 7.
This heating device will also include adjustment means which will make it possible to vary the temperature according to the angular speed of the cylinder 2 and according to the nature of the primer which has been sprayed by the strips of paste.
The cylinder 3 is lined over its entire outer surface with a semi-hardened rubber casing which has the hollow designs that the sheet 4 of the cylinder 2 bears in relief, protrusions and these hollows coming together exactly on the contact line of the two cylinders
Cylinder 3 acts as a compressor and means are provided to adjust its pressure on cylinder 2.
The strips of paper or rather of still moist pulp impregnated with the sprayed primer they have received come together between the cylinders 2 2 and 3 between which are formed,
<Desc / Clms Page number 16>
on the said bandas, the desired inlays.
When the 'pepier thus strongly assembled and encrusted leaves the line following which the inlays are stamped, it winds up on cylinder 2 .. (which, as has been said above, is heated) and dries ; it then comes in the form of a completely finished strip 8 to be wound on a roller 9 whose speed of rotation is fixed so that the winding takes place without pressure to avoid any flattening of the incrustations.
Fig. 13 shows a second embodiment of the laminator assembly, in which embodiment the single compressor cylinder is replaced by a battery of three cylinders 10, 11 and 12.
The central cylinder 10 played the role of compressor, that is to say it acts in combination with the encrusting and drying cylinder 2 in the same way as the cylinder 3 of the machine shown schematically in fig.ll; the cylinders 11 and 12 which are arranged on either side of the cylinder 10 play the role of tensioners for the endless belt 13 which winds on the three cylinders.
The strip 13 is made of semi-hardened rubber and bears the designs which protrude from the outer sheet of the cylinder 2.
The cylinders 11 and 12 are not in contact with the cylinder 2 but at a small distance from the latter, this distance being moreover capable of being adjusted; it follows that the action of the strip 13 against the cylinder 2 is progressive, its pressure on the said cylinder increasing progressively to the contact line of the compressor cylinder 10 and of the cylinder 2, line along which
<Desc / Clms Page number 17>
it is maximum, then gradually decreases again after the paper strip has passed over cylinder 10.
A relatively slow and progressive formation of incrustations is thus obtained and by this means the tearing which can occur in the paper when there is only one / compressor cylinder, the action of which is necessarily brutal, exists in the machine.
In a third embodiment shown diagrammatically in FIG. 4, the casing 14 of the compressor cylinder 3 is made of soft rubber and smooth on the outside.
In this case and due to the consistency of the envelope 14 the contact of the two cylinders @e is made, more along a line, but along a portion of the cylinder, for example, according to the given pressure, from point a to point b .
The strip of encrusted paper passing between the cylinders, the encrustations are formed in the paper by pressing the projections of the cylinure 2 into the mass of soft rubber of the casing 14 on the other hand, due to the relatively large contact surface which exists between the two cylinders, the formation of incrustations in the paper is relatively gradual
As has been said above, the primer spraying can replace the sizing of the sheets of paper to be encrusted when said spraying will take place in the manner shown in figol before the strips are brought together to pass to the lamination. .
This spraying can be done with products in liquid form, but it is also possible to spray solid and powdery products onto the dough, since, at this time, the dough is still wet.
<Desc / Clms Page number 18>
The materials thus projected will be distributed over the surface of the strips of dough and will impregnate them before being solidified and cooked by passing over the inlay and dryer cylinder 2.
The spraying of the primers can moreover be done as shown in fig. 15 on the dryer cylinder itself either at 14 and before the passage on the compressor cylinder 3 as shown in the drawing, or even beyond the lamination when the incrustations have been formed in the paper,
Thanks to these various improvements it will be possible to realize a simple machine for the manufacture of embedded paper, the inlay cylinder being able to be constituted by an ordinary papermaking dryer which will have been coated with an encrusted sheet,
It is of course understood, moreover, without going beyond the scope of the invention that:
1 all the various geometrical profiles of the protrusions are given only by way of example and that the inlays of any profile, dimension and arrangement can be given by an assembly of geometrical drawings of any kind likely to form lines of inlays separated by flat and capable of replacing the grooves which form the corrugation of known corrugated papers;
2 that the various means of constituting the machines which have just been described and which are shown in the appended drawings have been cited only by way of example and that modifications may be made to them without the general economy of the invention is thereby altered;
<Desc / Clms Page number 19>
3 that any other material may be imagined whatever its nature to implement the process for the manufacture of the industrial product to which said patent relates.
