'-lais cette pratique a pour grave inconvénient: de ne freiner qu'une faible partie de la charge, surtout lorsqu'il s'agit de véhicules de messageries ou même de wagons de marchan- dises dont le chargement n'est. pas toujours réparti également sur tous les essieux du véhicule;
On peut supposer d'abord que le levier multiplicateur 1 est fixe. Cet axe 7-9 se dé place donc suivant une droite parallèle au bord gauche de l'échancrure \?; d'autre part, la barre de traction 10 descend en même temps, en tournant autour de son extrémité non représentée et articulée sur le cylindre de frein; on remarquera, en considérant 1_a fig. 1, que les trajectoires des points d'articu lation 7-9 et 9-1.0 sont nettement diver gentes;
Device for automatic adjustment of a brake according to the load. In all the devices for automatic adjustment of a brake as a function of the load, (whether these are devices acting by varying the pressure on the cylinder or by purely mechanical means, the braking according to the load is always regulated by the axle least loaded, in order to avoid the engagement of the latter, which would occur if the brakes were applied according to the total weight of the vehicle.
'-but this practice has the serious drawback: of braking only a small part of the load, especially when it comes to courier vehicles or even freight wagons with no load. not always evenly distributed over all axles of the vehicle;
it may even happen that loading. either total on one axle and that the other is completely unloaded (in the case of couriers). Braking is then considered to be braking of the tare alone, when in reality one would have to brake 50 0 / o of the total load, if this were equally distributed over the two axles.
The present invention, due to the work of Mr. Anselme Neveu, aims precisely to remedy this defect and (to have it in all circumstances maximum braking as a function of the load on each axle.
The subject of the invention is a device for automatically adjusting a brake as a function of the load, a device characterized in that it comprises a multiplier lever interposed between the bar (the traction coming from the linkage of the brake cylinder and ehaqrae group of axle balancers, this lever being provided with a notch in which can move a movable member connected, by a bet, to the suspended part and to the unsuspended part of the vehicle, so that its displacements are proportional to the loads, (the other hand, to, the drawbar of the linkage of the brake cylinder.
The appended drawing represents, by way of examples, two embodiments of the object of the invention, in its application, on the one hand.,. To vehicles with ordinary axles and, on the other hand, to bogie vehicles.
Figs. 1 and? show, in elevation. the application of the invention to a vehicle with ordinary axles, the device being represented in two operating positions.
Fig. 3 shows, in elevation, the application of the invention to a bogie vehicle.
Fig. 4 finally is a detail view, on a larger scale, of part of FIG. 3. In fig. 1 and 2, we see a multiplier lever 1 provided with a notch 2, two attachment points 3 and 4 and a ramp 5. The multiplier lever 1 is fixed by the axis 3 to a support 6 integral of the chassis; an axle linkage control rod 25 is. fixed by the axis .1 to said lever 1. At rest, the latter is normally. tilted Towards the axle (position in fig. 1).
A carriage 7, consisting of two sheets cut in the shape of a T, receives the axes of two rollers 8 and that of an angled jamming lever 9 to an arm to which is fixed, by an axis, the drawbar 10 coming from the cylinder. This lever 9 is. fitted with a second arm 23.
A connecting rod 11, formed for example of two flat bars, connects the carriage 7 to a lever arm 12 integral with a shaft 13 pivoting in a support 14; an extension 15 of the lever arm 12 can abut against the support at 16. A part 1.7 placed at right angles to the lever arm 12 comprises, at its end, an eyelet in which is fixed a spring 18 adjustable by screws and nuts 19.
Shaft 13 extends to the crate and. is carried by one or more fixed bearings ü. said fund. This shaft is also integral with a lever 20 at the end of which is fixed the binocular 21 of the suspension spring?:? of the axle.
The spring. 18 being assumed to be set so that, with the vehicle empty, the carriage is in the upper position, that is to say in the position shown in the fi--. <B> 1, </ B> the operation will be as follows: When loading the vehicle, the suspension spring 22 transmits to the carriage 7, by means of the binocular 21, the lever 20, the lever arm 12 and the rod 11, a displacement downward proportional to the load: the articulation axis 7-9 is obviously driven in this movement.
We can first assume that the multiplier lever 1 is fixed. This axis 7-9 therefore moves along a straight line parallel to the left edge of the notch \ ?; on the other hand, the traction bar 10 descends at the same time, rotating around its end, not shown and articulated on the brake cylinder; one will notice, by considering 1_a fig. 1, that the trajectories of points of articulation 7-9 and 9-1.0 are clearly diverge;
as a result, the locking lever 9 therefore rotates clockwise with respect to the drawbar and also clockwise with respect to the carriage 7; in other words, the bar 10, the lever 9 and the carriage. 7 tend to be in a straight line, and the axis 7-9 as well as the arm 23 approach the ramp 5, which is assumed to be fixed, given the angle that this ramp makes with the left edge of the notch '?.
These relative displacements of the three parts 10, 9 and 7 are produced by a traction exerted on the axis 7-9 by the carriage 7 and. directed to the right, this traction being provided by the reaction of the rake edge of the notch on the rollers of the carriage 7.
But it was assumed, to make the preceding reason, that the multiplier lever 1. was fixed. In reality, this lever can rotate around its articulation axis 3, and it can be seen that it actually turns around this axis in the direction of clockwise, under the action of the pressure exerted by the rollers 8 on the left edge of the notch, during the descent of the carriage, the ramp 5 thus going in front of the axis 7-9 and. of the arm 23 whose movements are located. decreased by as much.
Ultimately, when the vehicle is loaded, the -cart goes down into the groove \? by simultaneously rotating the bar 10 around its fixed end no. shown, a rotation chi locking lever 9 around its axis of articulation 9-10, a rotation of the same lever around its axis cl "articulation 7-9 and a rotation of the multiplier lever 1 around its axis of articulation lation 3, all these rotations being done in a clockwise direction.
The arm 23 gets closer to the ramp 5 as the load of the vehicle is phis high; when the load is. maximum, there is contact between the arm 23 and the ramp 5 (fig. 2).
The advantage of the pivoting of the multiplier lever 1 around its axis as a function of the load of the vehicle will be seen below.
The lever arm <B> 7-3 </B> by which the force of the drawbar 10 is transmitted to the lever 1 to actuate the brake linkage is thus greater when the vehicle is loaded (fig. 2) that when it is. empty (see fig. 1). If braking takes place at this time, the force exerted on the control rod 25 is multiplied in the ratio. corresponding values of this lever arm 7-3 and of the arm 4-3.
The spring 18 being established to counterbalance the total load when the carriage is at the bottom of the notch 2, all the intermediate positions will therefore correspond to a multiplication proportional to the load of the vehicle.
The ramp 5 of the lever 1 has been provided with the aim of equalizing, as far as possible, the strokes of the cylinder in the empty and loaded position, the latter stroke being a function of the position of the carriage with respect to the multiplier lever 1; in the released and empty position (see fig. 1), the weight of the drawbar 10 causes part 9 to fall and a play occurs between the wedging arm 23 and the ramp 24 of the lever 1, while in position loose, but at maximum load (see fig. 2), arm 23 touches boom 5.
When braking, the pulling of the bar 10 first rotates the lever 9, if the arm 23 of the latter is not in contact with the ramp) (case where the vehicle load is not maximum ), until said contact is made, then the multiplier lever 1 around axis 3 in a clockwise direction. The contact between the arm 23 and the ramp 5 causes the carriage 7 to jam in the notch 2, so that the carriage cannot move in this notch during braking despite the action due to the compaction of the vehicle towards it. 'before. and its lifting towards the rear.
It should then be pointed out that, when a vehicle is empty, the brake shoes are normally located below the wheel axle; when the vehicle is loaded, the shoes pull away from the bandages. With the device described, on the contrary, as the bar 10 is fixed on the other hand to the cylinder, when the carriage goes down, the straightening lever 1 pulls on the linkage of the axle and the shoes are close to the tires, this rap closely compensating for the spacing due to loading.
It is therefore possible, under these conditions, to equip vehicles equipped with this brake with single-acting linkage adjusters which only take up the wear of the shoes; the use of double-acting adjusters is essential only to compensate for the differences in the stroke of the brake cylinder and to prevent the shoes from remaining applied to the tires when vehicles not fitted with the device described have been unloaded.
One could obviously provide on each side of the brake cylinder a device similar to that which has been described above and which has been shown in FIGS. 1 and 2; the bar 10 would in this case become the conventional connecting rod.
In fig. 3 and 4 show the application of the invention to a vehicle 'a bo gies. The control device shown makes it possible to use the variations in distance between the frame of a bogie and the crossbars of the bogie. It is known that, in certain types of bogie, the axle boxes are capped with sleepers on which are placed, towards the middle, transverse or coil springs or both at the same time.
In this type of bogie, it is no longer the reaction of one of the springs that is used, but the variation of the distance between two elements, one of which is substantially fixed relative to the body of the vehicle, at namely the frame of the bogie, and the other fixed in relation to the wheels, namely the crossbars in thresholds.
The distance between the bogie frame and the body is also variable depending on the gallop, the condition of the track, the play between the bogie shoes and the body shoes, etc. There is also the question of curves; in this case, the longitudinal axes of the body and the bogie no longer coincide. Polar that the control device is really, effective, we must take into account all these factors.
In the device shown in FIG. 3, it will be noted that the return lever 26 does not have its axis 27 integral with the body of the vehicle 28, but rather with two rods 31 articulated by a pin 32 on the bogie frame; under these conditions, all the movements of the bogie frame relative to the body are transmitted to axis 27.
The return lever 26, shown on a larger scale in FIG. 4, has one of its arms connected to a link 33 attached to its. lower part to an attachment 34 integral with one of the spacers of the two crossbars (see fig. 3).
The second arm of the return lever 26 is connected to the control linkage 35 of the carriage 7 of the multiplier lever corresponding to this bogie which is similar to that of FIGS. 1 and 2. The linkage 35 acts as the return lever 12 of FIGS. 1 and 2.
From the foregoing, it is easy to understand that all the movements in height between the attachment points 32 and 34 will result in a variation of the angular position of the return lever 26, which amounts to saying that, for a loaded vehicle, the push on the rod 33 will result in a pull on the linkage 35.
But still it is necessary that, on the whole of this device, there is an elastic connection allowing the differences in length between the points 32 and 34 without there being any rupture of an organ, because, as one described, for the first assembly of fig. 1 and 2, the blocking, by the arm 23 against the ramp 5, of the multi plier lever, no longer allows elongation at. the linkage 35.
For this purpose, the branch 36-40 of the return 26 is in two parts (see fig. 4) pierced with a hole allowing the passage of a screw 37 which, by means of a spring 38 and nuts 39; elastically assembles the arm 36 and the flat part 40 at the end of which the rod 35 is fixed; a stopper in the form of a collar 41 guides the part 40 in width and prevents it from rotating.
If therefore the force transmitted by the rod 35 exceeds the force of the spring 38, the latter is compressed and the part 40 moves away from the arm 36 either upwards or downwards, as the case may be, without there being has rupture of an element of the device.
