Combination lock. The present invention relates to a combination lock, comprising, on the one hand, several coaxial discs which can rotate independently of each other around their axis and, on the other hand, a locking device with teeth , these discs moving internal circular grooves having notches which, brought into a given position, provide passage to said teeth to allow unlocking of the lock. This lock is characterized in that the locking device comprises an axial guide core on which.
the discs slide axially when the lock is closed and opened, this core carrying a sliding bolt provided with the aforementioned teeth, in the form of saw teeth, the number and arrangement of which correspond to those of the circular grooves, this bolt capable of taking a retracted position with respect to said grooves and a locking position towards which it is resiliently biased, with the aim that, when closing, the edge of the grooves acts on the flat, oblique of the saw teeth by moving the bolt to the release position until,
what the actual grooves happen. opposite the corresponding teeth and consequently allow the bolt to slide towards its locking position, the lock thus being able to be closed in any relative angular position of the discs. The drawing. appended shows, by way of example, two embodiments of the object of the invention.
Fig. 1 is a longitudinal section, through I-I of FIG. 2, of the lock in the closed position, with the two parts it is intended to reattach.
The fi-. 2 is a plan view from above. Fig. 3 is a plan view, from below, of all the coaxial disks.
Fig. 4 is a diametral section, through IV-IV of FIG. 5, of an isolated disc.
The fi-. 5 is a plan view of this disc, by its lower face.
The fi-. 6 and 7 are an axial section through VI-V I of FIG. 7 and a top plan view of the guide core.
In fig. 8 to. 13 which relate to ;. a variant, FIG. 8 is a longitudinal section of the lock in the closed position, not through the axis of the guide core.
The, fig. 9 represents the bolt in perspec tive.
Fig. 10 is a plan view, from below, of the plate carrying the core and the bolt.
Fig. 11 is a quick plan, below, of all the coaxial disks.
Figs. 1'2 and 13 represent, on a larger scale than that of FIGS. 10 and 11, the assembly of two consecutive coaxial disks.
In figs. 1 and 8, the reference letters <1 and B designate the two parts to be joined together by means of the lock. In the first embodiment (fi-. 1 to 7), the lower part B is clamped between a base plate 1, which may be round or shaped, and another plate of the same shape 2, assembled together by four rivets of which two, 3, 4, are visible on the fi-. 1. The base plate 1 has a circular central opening 5 in which the base is engaged 6 of the guide core 7, in the form of a hollow cone.
The fixing of the core on the plate 1 is obtained by matting its base 6. The guide core 7 has an axial slot 8, rectangular, parallel to the generators of the cone (FIG. 6). Its fixing on the base plate 1 is facilitated by the shoulder 9 with which it is provided.
A bolt 10, mounted in the slot S, can slide therein in a direction perpendicular to the axis of the core 7 (FIG. 1). It has a stopper 11 which prevents it from coming out of the slot. A leaf spring 12, the ends of which bear against the internal cone 13 of the core, is applied by its convex part 14 on the dorsal side of the bolt. This last is provided with equidistant saw teeth 15, 16 and 17.
The upper part A, which the lock must reattach to the lower part B, is clamped against a cage 12l and a bottom plate 19, both having an oval outline, by means of rivets 20, 21, 22 and 23 (fig. . 1 and 2). The cage has, in its upper face 24, a circular opening 25, the. bottom wall 26 has a circular opening 27 for the passage of the guide core 7. In the outer edge 28 of the cavity is formed a narrow groove 29.
The upper face of the cage 18 has, around the opening 25, signs, for example letters of the alphabet or numbers, 30, for the combinations which allow the lock to be opened.
A first annular disc 31 is housed in the cavity, so as to be able to rotate there around the vertical axis of symmetry of the cage 18. This disc 31 has a circular central opening 32 made in its wall 3 3, which is in withdrawal from the upper face 31, so as to form a circular cavity 35 in which is housed a second disc 36, which can be rotated around the axis of the cage 18. As. cage, the cylindrical edge of the cavity 35 of the first disc has a narrow groove 37.
In addition, a narrow groove and. deep 38 is formed in the peripheral wall of the disc 31 .. The second disc 36, centered on the first 31, comprises, in turn, a cavity 40 serving as a housing for a third disc 46, of similar shape to. that of a hat. The second disc 36 is shown in detail on fi-.4 and 5. Its cavity 40 has, on its inner edge, a narrow groove 42, and in its periphery is formed a narrow and deep groove 43.
Its inner wall 44, set back with respect to its upper and lower faces, is pierced with a circular opening 45 with a conical edge, the generatrices of which are. practically parallel to. those of the guide core 7 in the closed position of the lock. In its cavity 40, the second disc 36 carries the cha skin 46 which has in its intermediate flat wall 47 a circular opening 48 with a conical edge, centered on the axis of symmetry of the cage 18. The cylindrical outer edge of the cap 46 is formed with a narrow and deep groove 49. The inner bottom 50 of this cap matches the shape of the top of the guide core 7.
Between the bottom 50 and the intermediate wall is hollowed out a circular groove 51 of height equal to that of the tooth 17 (read bolt 10. A second circular groove 52 is formed between the intermediate wall 47 of the cap and that, 44, of the second disc 36, its height is barely greater than that of the tooth 16. Finally, a third circular groove 53 is formed between the intermediate wall 44 of the second disc and the wall 33 of the first disc 31 ..
The separating walls 33, 44 and 47 of the grooves 51, 52 and # J3 are indented individually by notches 54, 55 and 56 of width a little greater than that of the teeth of the bolt 10 and substantially depth. equal to the height of the right flank of saw teeth 15, 16 and 17. The bottom wall 26 of the cage 18 also has, in its circular opening 27, a notch 64.
The two discs 31, 36 and the cap 46 are kept stacked on the cage 18 in any position of the support part A. For this purpose, retaining rings, radially deformable, 57, 58 and 59, are, each pledged simultaneously in two corresponding sil lons. The first ring 57 is. trapped in the groove 29 of the cage and the outer groove 38 of the first disc 31 .; the second, 58, in the grooves 37 and 43 called the first and of the second disc 36; the third finally, 59, in the inner groove 42 of the second disc and the deep groove 49 provided in the cylindrical outer edge of the cap.
The two discs 31, 36 and the cap 46 are marked, on their upper face, with a radial reference line 60, 61, 62 which each has to be brought onto the spoke passing through the corresponding letter 30 of the chosen combination, on cage 18.
Since the lock described is supposed to be closed, it can only be opened by bringing the notches 54, 55 and 56 of the two discs and of the cap into alignment with the fixed notch 64, which is achieved by turning independently the tins of the other disks and the cha skin, so that the references 60, 61, 62 are pointed at the letters of the secret combination. The discs and the cap then occupy with respect to the bolt 10, the positions shown on the fi-. 1.
It can be seen that the saw teeth 15, 16 and 17 can pass freely through the corresponding notches 54, 55 and 56 when the user lifts the support part A. with the cage 18 and the components it carries: the discs slide along the guide core 7.
To immediately close and lock the lock; although in the meantime the disks have. been brought into any relative positions, it suffices to bring part A closer to part B in such a way that the series of coaxial circular openings 25, 32, 45 and 48 are automatically centered on the guide core 7.
The edges of said openings then act. on the oblique flanks of saw teeth 1.5, 16 and 17 and push back the bolt 10 to. inside the cone 13, up to. the position drawn in phantom lines on 3a. fig. 1, which allows the discs and the cha skin to slide over the core 7 until the top of the core 7 touches the bottom 50 of the cap. The saw teeth are then located opposite the grooves which correspond to them and are introduced into them evenings by the action of the spring 12-14 which slides the bolt 10 from right to left (fi. 1) to lock the lock.
In the second embodiment visible in FIGS. 8 to 13, the lower part B is always clamped between a base plate 1 and an outer counter-plate 2, assembled by rivets 3, 4. The base plate 1 is. fixed, by screws 67, to a flange of a guide core 68 and to a ring 69. The guide core 68 has over its entire height an axial slot with parallel blanks 70, in which the active part is guided 71 with a sliding bolt (fig. 9).
This active part 71, one edge of which is cut so as to have two or more locking teeth 72, 73, is supported by a plate 74 which can slide inside the ring 69, between the base said core 68 and the counter-plate 2. In a rounded triangular spring 75, resting in the ring 69 and with its ends engaged in holes 76 of the plate 74, urges the bolt 71-74 according to the arrow 1 ' 1 (fig. 8 and 10).
The upper part .l, which the lock must attach to the lower part B, is clamped between a cage 118 and a perforated circular bottom plate 77, by means of rivets 20, 22. This cage 118 has a wall its median 78 separating two circular eavités 79, 80, in one (79) of which is placed a triangular stop spring 81 castrated by the vertices of the triangle in the lower rim 82 (Fig. II).
When the lock is closed, the spring 81 engages elastically in a groove 83 of the core 68 to determine the stopping of the cage and of the discs on said core. It is thus possible to keep the lock closed without having to operate the discs of the secret combination.
A narrow groove 84, made in the cylindrical edge of the cavity 80, serves. to receive in part a mounting segment 85. The upper annular face 86 of the cage 118 has letters of the alphabet not shown, but arranged in the same way as the letters 30 in the first embodiment (fig. 2), for combinations allowing. to open the lock.
A first annular disc 87 is housed in the cavity 80, so as to be able to rotate there about an axis R-R common to the two discs 87 and 88 which the lock comprises. The disc 87 is pierced with a circular central opening 89 in its wall 90 which, being recessed with respect to. the upper face of this disc forms the bottom of a circular cavity in which the second disc 88 can rotate, which also serves as cha skin. The cylindrical edge of the cavity containing the second disc is, in turn, grooved with a narrow groove 92 serving to. partially accommodate a moptage segment 93.
The second disc 88 has a median wall 94 with a central opening 95 for the passage of the core 68.
. The lock being. in the closed position, the locking tooth 72 of the bolt is freely engaged between the. wall 90 of the disc 87 and the middle wall 94 of the second disc, and the. second tooth 73, between this median wall 94 and the bottom of the cap-shaped disc 88.
A groove 96, formed on the periphery of the first disc, cooperates with the groove 84 of the cage to support the mounting segment 85. The second segment 93 is. housed both in the groove 92 of the first disc and in a corresponding groove 97 made on the periphery of the second disc 88. The circular openings 89 and 95 in the rotating discs have respective radial notches 89 'and 95' in width sufficient to allow the passage of the teeth 72, 73 of the bolt. The discs 87 and 88 are marked, on their outer face, towards the periphery, with a radial reference line, not shown, but equivalent to lines 60 and 61 of the fi-. \ '.
To open the lock, each of these features must be brought successively onto the shelf not sane by the corresponding letter of the secret combination. This maneuver has the effect of placing the notches 89 ′ and 95 ′ eii gaze of the teeth 72, respectively 73 chi bolt 71.
It is easy, for this, to turn the discs 87 and 88 independently,; riice;:, a pressure of the fingers on the molten parts 87 'and 88', so that the marks are. pointed at the letters of the secret combination. The operation of this lock is moreover the same, except for the number of letters, as that of the first embodiment described.
The middle partition 78 has an arched window 98 for lateral access to the segment 85 and the wall 90 an arched window 99 for access to the second segment 93. The window 98 communicates, in a certain position, with a notch 100 on the edge. lower disc 87 and window 99 with a notch 101 called second disc for a certain position (the latter. The ends of segment 8 5 are folded inwards at 85 '12 and 1.3) and those of segment: 93, likewise, in 93 '.
In the free state, the segments 85 and 9: 3 have a maximum diameter, which is slightly greater than those of the respective grooves 8-1 and 92 of the cage and of the first disc, so that they remain resiliently applied to the bottom of this groove.
To disassemble the disk assembly 87, 88 from the cage 118, after removing the base plate 77, where the disk 87 rotates until the window 98 and the notch 100 overlap. During assembly, the segment 8 was inserted: let the external groove 8.1 in a position such that its ends 85 'appear in the notch 100, as seen in fig. 12.
It is then sufficient to bring these ends?: 1 'to the mo' in tweezers, and to put them in contact (position visible in fig. 1.3) so that the segment 85, while compressing, escapes from the groove 84 under the action of axial pressure. All of the disks 87, 88 then came out of the cage 118.
In the second stage, we will make the window 99 coincide with the notch 101, then we will touch the ends 93 'of segment 93 (position of fig. 13), which will allow this segment 93 to escape an outer groove 92 under the action of axial pressure. The discs 87 and 88 separate.
